Description

Domaine de l'inventionField of the invention

The present invention falls within the field of making protective clothing against nuclear, radiological, biological and chemical attack. The present invention relates more particularly to the assembly by sewing of the CBRN protective garment. The invention is particularly applicable to protective clothing incorporating an adsorbent filter layer. The invention is in particular intended for a military application.

Etat de la techniqueState of the art

A .There are many types of protective clothing, especially for military use. Among them, protective clothing against CBRN risks (acronym for Nuclear, Radiological, Biological and Chemical). These garments cover all or part of the user's body and are intended to protect said user against the effects of contaminants, whether chemical, biological or other, in particular by avoiding contact with these contaminants, whether they are in liquid or gaseous form, with the skin or mucous membranes of said user. Various ranges of protective clothing have been developed, such as for example jackets, trousers, coveralls, see for example US4272851A .

Generally, protective clothing against CBRN risks comes in the form of two superimposed textile layers, each responding to a specific function:
  • a so-called outer layer intended to guarantee the non-penetration of contaminants in liquid form,
  • a layer, called filtering material, intended for its part to ensure the filtration of contaminants in vapor form.

Your clothes are commonly made from pieces assembled together, in particular by sewing.

However, it turns out that these seams cause a lack of protection of the protective garment and allow contaminants to penetrate in liquid form through the perforations of the seam.

There is therefore a need to guarantee protection of protective clothing for military use against CBRN risks.

Exposé de l'inventionDisclosure of Invention

The object of the present invention is in particular to provide an effective solution making it possible to reinforce, in particular at the level of the seams, the protective clothing against the effects of contaminants in all their forms, whether in liquid form or in vapor form, while maintaining the comfort of the garment for the user.

Additional objectives of the invention are that this garment remains simple to make.

To this end, the present invention provides protective clothing, in particular for military use, against the effects of a contaminating agent.

By the term garment is meant any article covering at least part of a body of a user wearing said article. By way of non-limiting example, the protective clothing can be a jacket, trousers, a combination.

By contaminant is meant any toxic substance, in particular chemical and/or biological, such as mustard gas for example.

The protective clothing is intended in particular for military use. It can also be intended for civilian use, for example for the gendarmerie, the police, hospitals, firefighters.

The protective clothing comprises in its thickness, from an external environment in which the user of the clothing moves towards the body of said user:
  • a textile layer, called the outer layer, configured to stop the liquid phase of the contaminant, having a dual hydrophobic and oleophobic characteristic, and permeable to air,
  • a textile layer, called a layer of filtering material, configured to absorb the vapors coming from the contaminant, and permeable to air.

By layer having a hydrophobic characteristic is meant within the meaning of the present description a layer which tends to repel water, whether by nature or by treatment.

By layer having an oleophobic characteristic is meant within the meaning of the present description a layer which tends to repel oils.

The outer layer is produced by a plurality of yokes assembled together, at assembly zones, by sewing.

By sewing, we mean the assembly of at least two parts together using a sewing thread, or sewing thread, passed through a needle.

The protective garment comprises, at an assembly zone, a textile layer called the reinforcement layer, having a dual hydrophilic and oleophilic characteristic, and assembled with two inserts of the outer layer by the same seam. In other words, the reinforcement layer is joined to the two yokes of the outer layer by the seam which joins said two yokes.

By layer having a hydrophilic characteristic is meant a layer which tends to absorb water, whether by nature or by treatment.

By layer having an oleophilic characteristic is meant a layer which tends to absorb oils, whether by nature or by treatment.

While the current solutions proposed in the state of the art are focused on preventing the liquid of the contaminant from passing through the outer layer via the perforations of the seams, the invention adopts a completely opposite approach. Indeed, instead of seeking to repel the liquid from the contaminating agent and to keep it outside the outer layer, the invention allows the liquid to pass through the outer layer through the perforations of the seams. The reinforcement layer being assembled by the same sewing thread as that assembling two yokes of the outer layer, the sewing thread then serves as a preferential path and guides the liquid of the agent contaminant towards the reinforcement layer which, by its dual hydrophilic and oleophilic characteristics, absorbs the contaminant in its liquid form.

Unexpectedly and surprisingly, the inventors have found that no more contaminant liquid passes through the protective clothing.

The addition of a hydrophilic and oleophilic reinforcement layer at the level of the assembly zones thus forms a barrier to the liquid and considerably improves the protection of the garment against the effects of contaminating agents.

The manufacture of this protective clothing is not complicated either.

According to particular embodiments, the invention also responds to the following characteristics, implemented separately or in each of their technically effective combinations.

In particular embodiments of the invention, the reinforcement layer is only sewn with the outer layer.

In an exemplary embodiment of the assembly by sewing, the reinforcing layer is between the two yokes.

In particular embodiments of the invention, two yokes of the outer layer are assembled together at an assembly zone, solely by sewing. The reinforcement layer is assembled with said yokes by the same seam.

In particular embodiments of the invention, the protective garment comprises an additional piece sewn onto a yoke of the outer layer. The reinforcement layer is then assembled to the additional part and to the yoke of the outer layer by the same seam. In other words, the reinforcement layer is assembled to the additional piece and to the yoke of the outer layer by the seam which assembles said additional piece and said yoke of the outer layer.

Preferably, the additional part is a pocket or a reinforcement.

In particular embodiments of the invention, an additional piece and a yoke of the outer layer are assembled together at an assembly zone, solely by sewing. Layer reinforcement is assembled with said additional piece and said yoke by the same seam.

Description détaillée d'un mode de réalisation de l'inventionDetailed description of an embodiment of the invention

The invention will be described in the particular context of one of its preferred fields of application in which the protective clothing is CBRN protective clothing, intended in particular for military use or for civilian use.

The invention is mainly intended, without this being limiting of the invention, to any person who may be required to use such protective clothing in the context of his professional activity, such as for example a soldier, a gendarme, a policeman , a doctor, a firefighter.

Such protective clothing is intended to protect the user wearing it, in particular when said user has to move around in an external environment vitiated by contaminating agents, such as for example chemical and/or biological agents.

In the rest of the description, we consider the case where the protective garment is a jacket 10, as illustrated in the figure 1 . Nevertheless, the invention can also be applied to any protective clothing covering any part of the user's body, such as trousers or overalls.

The jacket 10 comprises, in its thickness, from an external environment in which the body of the user wearing it evolves under normal conditions of use, towards said body:
  • a first textile layer, called outer layer 20,
  • a second textile layer, called layer of filtering material 30, intended to be in direct or indirect contact with the body.

The layer of filter material 30 is shown in dotted line on the picture 2 .

The outer layer 20 and the layer of filtering material 30 are superimposed and preferably assembled together, by sewing, only around the periphery of the jacket 10.

The outer layer 20 is composed of a textile whose main functions are:
  • on the one hand, to ensure the robustness of the jacket 10 by protection against external mechanical attack, in particular resistance to abrasion and tearing, and
  • on the other hand to guarantee the non-penetration of contaminating agents in liquid form.

The outer layer 20 also has air permeability.

The outer layer 20 is for example composed of a woven, non-woven or knitted textile, in natural fibers or in synthetic fibers.

The outer layer 20 is for example made up of a thin fabric, for example a fabric made of polyester, polyamide, or a mixture with fibers such as for example cotton, aramid or viscose. Preferably, the outer layer consists of a mixture of the cotton/polyester or aramid/viscose type.

To guarantee the non-penetration of contaminants in liquid form, the outer layer advantageously has a dual hydrophobic and oleophobic characteristic.

In one embodiment, this dual hydrophobic and oleophobic characteristic is generally obtained by the application, on a face of the textile, called the external face, located on the side of the external environment, with a hydrophobic and oleophobic treatment, such as for example a treatment based on fluorocarbon resins, such as for example Teflon® .

The outer layer 20 has, for example, a basis weight of between 400 and 700 g/m 2 , more precisely between 150 and 250 g/m 2 , even more precisely of the order of 200 g/m 2 .

The layer of filtering material 30 is composed of a textile whose main function is to ensure the filtration of contaminants in vapor form. This filtration is generally obtained by an adsorbent medium which captures, by an adsorption or reaction phenomenon, the contaminating agents in vapor form.

The adsorbent medium is for example composed of activated carbons, zeolites, catalysts. The adsorbent medium is preferably integrated into the textile in the form of powder, ball or even fibers.

The layer of filter material 30 also has air permeability.

The layer of filtering material 30 has, for example, a surface mass of between 60 and 450 g/m 2 , and more precisely between 200 and 350 g/m 2 .

The layer of filtering material can be formed in a single piece or preferably from a plurality of pieces assembled by sewing.

Preferably, the outer layer 20 of the jacket 10 is formed of a plurality of yokes 21, 22, 23, 24, assembled together, in particular two by two, by sewing.

The outer layer 20 of the protective jacket 10 comprises, in a non-limiting manner:
  • a ventral part 21, intended to be arranged at the front of a user's body, that is to say at the level of his torso,
  • an opposite dorsal part 22, intended to be placed at the level of the back of said user,
  • two sleeves 23, each intended to be arranged at the level of one arm of the user.

It may also include a hood 24, intended to be placed at the level of the user's head, covering the head apart from the face, as illustrated in the figure 1 .

The ventral part 21 and the dorsal part 22 are assembled together at the level of the user's shoulder zones and flanks. They are also assembled to the two sleeves 23 and to the hood 24, if the jacket has one.

Advantageously, to allow the user to put on and take off the protective jacket easily, the ventral part 21 can be formed of two parts assembled together, for example by a zipper.

To complete the jacket, the ventral 21, dorsal 22, sleeve 23 and or hood 24 parts can each include an additional piece assembled by sewing to the outer layer 20.

By additional parts, we mean parts that are added to the jacket, such as for example pockets 25 or reinforcements 26. These additional parts are assembled to the outer layer, they do not as such form the outer layer 20 of the jacket.

In an exemplary embodiment, the ventral 21, dorsal 22, sleeve 23 and or hood 24 parts may include at least one pocket 25 or a reinforcement 26, such as an elbow reinforcement, assembled at the level of the external face of the external layer. 20. Only a pocket 25 on the ventral part 21 and a reinforcement 26 at the elbow on one of the sleeves 23 are represented on the figure 1 .

The inserts forming the outer layer 20, whether the ventral part 21, the back part 22, the sleeves 23, the hood 24, as well as the additional parts, that is to say pockets 25, reinforcements 26 or others, are assembled together by sewing at so-called assembly zones.

Depending on the assembly to be made, yoke/yoke or yoke/additional piece, the seams may be different.

In a first embodiment of a seam, said seam is a so-called assembly seam.

By assembly seam is meant a seam suitable for the assembly of a yoke with another yoke.

Elles sont également assemblées à la capuche 24.The ventral part 21 and the dorsal part 22 are thus assembled together by an assembly seam at the level of the user's shoulder zones and flanks. They are assembled separately to the two sleeves 23. They are also assembled to the hood 24.

The picture 2 illustrates variants (a) and (b), (h), (i) of assembly stitching.

Variants (a), (h), (i) represent a double-needle, hemstitch type seam.

Variation (b) represents a five-thread overlock type seam.

The figure 1 illustrates for example the location of variants (a) and (b) of assembly seams.

Each assembly seam is configured so that each sewing thread passes through at least one thickness of each yoke right through.

In a second embodiment of a seam, said seam is a so-called fastening seam.

By fastening seam is meant a seam suitable for the assembly of an additional piece on a yoke.

The pockets 25 are thus assembled either to the ventral part 21, back part 22, sleeve 23, or hood 24, by an attachment seam. Similarly, the reinforcements 26 are assembled either to the ventral part 21, back part 22, sleeve 23, or hood 24, by an attachment seam.

The picture 2 illustrates two variants (e) and (g) of fastening seam:
  • Variant (e) is a fastening seam of the lockstitch type, for example intended for laying pockets or reinforcements,
  • Variant (g) is a fastening seam of the lockstitch type, for example intended for the pocket flap,
  • The picture 2 also illustrates a variant (d) which is a fastening seam of the lockstitch type reinforced with a flange, for example intended for pocket corners. This flange makes it possible to reinforce a fastening seam which is very stressed mechanically, such as for example the corners of pockets, and to reduce the risk of premature breakage of the sewing thread.

The figure 1 illustrates the location of these variants (d), (e) and (g) of fastening seams.

Each fastening seam is configured so that each sewing thread passes through at least one thickness of the additional part and one yoke right through.

Whether for the assembly seam or the fastening seam, the sewing thread used is a conventional sewing thread, which may or may not have undergone a hydrophobic and oleophobic treatment.

To improve the protection of the jacket against the penetration of contaminants at the seams, the jacket 10 comprises, at least at the level of an assembly zone, preferably all the assembly zones, a third textile layer, called reinforcement layer 40.

This reinforcement layer can either be placed only at the assembly zones or cover the entire surface of the jacket. In this case, said reinforcement layer is superimposed on the outer layer and on the layer of filtering material, forming an integral lining of the jacket.

The reinforcement layer 40 is composed of a textile having a double hydrophilic and oleophilic characteristic. The main function of the reinforcement layer 40 is to absorb the contaminant in liquid form which has passed through the outer layer through the perforations of the seam and which has been guided by the sewing thread towards the reinforcement layer.

The reinforcement layer 40 also has air permeability.

The reinforcing layer is composed of a textile, for example a woven, non-woven or knitted textile, made of natural fibers and/or of synthetic fibers.

The reinforcing layer is for example made up of a fine fabric, for example a fabric made of polyester, of polyamide, pure or a mixture with fibers such as for example cotton or viscose.

The reinforcing layer 40 advantageously has a dual hydrophilic and oleophilic characteristic.

In one embodiment, this dual hydrophilic and oleophilic characteristic is obtained by the very nature of the fibers making up the textile, which are hydrophilic and oleophilic.

In another embodiment, this dual hydrophilic and oleophilic characteristic is generally obtained by the application of a hydrophilic and oleophilic treatment.

In the assembly zone, the reinforcement layer 40 is directly assembled to the outer layer, either by the assembly seam or the fastening seam.

Preferably, the reinforcement layer 40 is assembled only to the outer layer.

In the case where the seam is an assembly seam, the reinforcement layer is inserted in such a way that each sewing thread systematically passes through at least one thickness of each yoke of the outer layer and at least one thickness of the reinforcement layer from side to side. The reinforcement layer is joined to the two yokes of the outer layer by the seam which joins said two yokes.

In the case where the seam is a fastening seam, the reinforcement layer is inserted in such a way that each sewing thread systematically passes through at least one thickness of the additional piece, at least one thickness of the yoke of the outer layer and at least one thickness of the reinforcing layer right through. The reinforcement layer is assembled to the additional piece and to the yoke of the outer layer by the seam which assembles said additional piece and said yoke of the outer layer.

In one embodiment, whatever the embodiment of the seam, the reinforcement layer is between the two yokes or between a yoke and an added piece, as illustrated in the picture 2 for variants (b), (d).

In another embodiment, to simplify the operations of making the outer layer, whatever the embodiment of the seam, the reinforcement layer is placed against a single yoke, on the side of the layer of filter material, as shown on the figure 2 for variants (a), (c), (f).

The above description sets out in detail a protective garment in the form of a jacket. In another embodiment of the protective garment, illustrated picture 3 , the protective clothing is 90 pants. picture 3 illustrates the location of variants (a) to (g) of the assembly and fastening seams on said pants.

In order to illustrate the significant improvements obtained by adding the reinforcement layer to the garment, whether it is a jacket, pants or other, numerous experiments have been carried out and are summarized below in the form of three examples. not limiting.

For all experiments:
  • the outer layer is a 190 g/m 2 cotton/polyester fabric (65%/35%) having received a fluoro-carbon treatment giving it a hydrophobic (Level 5 according to French standard NF EN ISO 4920) and oleophobic ( Level 5 according to standard NF EN ISO 14419),
  • the layer of filtering material is a polyurethane foam impregnated with 100 g/m 2 of activated carbon,
  • no seams join the outer layer and the layer of filter material.

Similarly, for all the experiments, the characterization of the performance of protective clothing is carried out by sampling a sample of the layers that make up the protective clothing and contamination by depositing drops of contaminants on the outer face of the outer layer of the clothing. Each test lasts 24 hours, during which the quantity of contaminant having passed through the layers is collected, quantified and then expressed in µg/cm 2 . The higher the quantity of contaminant, the lower the protection provided.

The experiments are carried out with a test bench, adapted and configured for such tests, and whose low detection limit for contaminating agent is 0.08 µg/cm 2 . It can thus be considered that any contaminant penetration below this low detection limit corresponds to total protection.

Le taux de pénétration d'Ypérite est exprimé après 24 heures en µg/cm2.The performance evaluation of the protective clothing was carried out according to a contamination protocol with a contaminant of Yperite type, deposited in the form of a 1 μl drop until a contamination level of 10 g/m 2 was obtained. Air suction through the sample at a flow rate of 100 ml/min is then carried out in order to guarantee the collection of mustard gas vapors having passed through the different layers of the sample. Mustard penetration rate is expressed after 24 hours in µg/cm 2 .

Exemple 1Example 1

In this first example, tests were carried out on three types of samples with no reinforcement layer, i.e. only a stack of outer layer and layer of filtering material (representative of existing protective clothing):
  • a first sample without seams,
  • a second sample provided with a joining seam in the outer layer, of the double-needle turn-down type, as illustrated in the figure 4 , with an untreated polyester yarn, the yarn having a weight of 0.45 g/ml (gram per linear meter),
  • a third sample provided with an assembly seam in the outer layer, also of the double-needle folded type, with a yarn having received a fluoro-carbon treatment giving it a dual hydrophobic and oleophobic characteristic, the yarn having a weight of 0.52 g/ml.

The results are summarized in the table below: Seamless Sewing with untreated thread Sewing with a fluoro-carbon thread Penetration in µg/cm 2 <0.08 ±0.00 3.55±3.40 4.46±5.88

There is indeed the phenomenon of vulnerability at the seams.

A contaminant penetration below the lower detection limit is obtained in the first sample. On the other hand, a contaminant penetration greater than the lower detection limit is obtained for the second and third samples, those provided with a seam.

The use of a fluoro-carbon treated yarn does not provide any improvement in the protection of the protective clothing against contaminants.

Exemple 2Example 2

In this second example, tests were carried out on two types of samples provided with a seam in the outer layer:
  • a first sample:
    • o with a reinforcing layer in the form of a nonwoven composed of a polyamide/polyester (70/30) mixture with a weight of 60 g/m 2 giving it by nature a dual hydrophilic and oleophilic characteristic, ci - after referred to as reinforcing layer A, and
    • ∘ provided with a seam in the outer layer, double-needle turn-down type, as illustrated in the figure 4 , with an untreated polyester yarn, the yarn having a weight of 0.45 g/ml,
    • ∘ the reinforcement layer has been inserted into the seam, as shown in variant (a) of the picture 2 , allowing all the sewing threads to systematically cross the two thicknesses of each yoke of the outer layer and the reinforcement layer,
  • a second sample:
    • ∘ with a reinforcement layer in the form of a non-woven made up of a polyamide/polyester (70/30) blend with a weight of 60 g/m 2 having received a fluoro-carbon treatment thus giving it a hydrophobic (Level 5 according to French standard NF EN ISO 4920) and oleophobic (Level 5 according to standard NF EN ISO 14419), hereinafter referred to as reinforcement layer B,
    • ∘ provided with a seam in the outer layer, double-needle turn-down type, as illustrated in the figure 4 , with an untreated polyester yarn, the yarn having a weight of 0.45 g/ml,
    • ∘ the reinforcement layer has been inserted into the seam, as shown in variant (a) of the picture 2 , allowing all the sewing threads to systematically pass through the two yokes of the outer layer and the reinforcement layer.

The results are summarized in the table below: Seam with reinforcement layer A Seam with reinforcement layer B Penetration in µg/cm 2 <0.08±0.00 11.12±4.00

It can be seen that a contaminant penetration greater than the lower detection limit is obtained for the second sample. Contrary to the teachings given in the state of the art which would lead to the preferential use of a reinforcing layer having a dual hydrophobic and oleophobic characteristic to consolidate the protection against the penetration of contaminants in liquid form, the use of the reinforcing layer B causes a marked increase in the penetration of contaminants. The reinforcement layer B seems to favor the transfer towards the layer of filtering material, probably by repulsion of the liquid phase of the contaminant having penetrated by the sewing thread towards the layer of filtering material.

On the contrary, and surprisingly, no contaminant penetration is detected in the first sample. The reinforcement layer A absorbs and localizes the contaminant in the outer layer and prevents it from accessing the layer of filtering material.

Exemple 3Example 3

In this third example, tests were carried out with different seam variants in the outer layer, a total of seven seam variants. These tests were carried out with a reinforcing layer A, and with an untreated polyester yarn, the yarn having a weight of 0.45 g/ml.

The seven seam variants tested represent all of the seam assemblies of an existing CBRN protective garment. Each assembly has been adapted so that each sewing thread crossing the outer layer right through also crosses a reinforcement layer, and without crossing the layer of filtering material.

The tests were carried out with the 7 variants (a) to (g) illustrated on the picture 2 .

As a reminder, seams (a), (b), (c), are intended for assembly seams, and seams (d), (e), (f) and 'g) are intended for attachment seams. More specifically, the seams (e), (f) are intended for laying reinforcements or pockets, the seam (g) to the pocket flap and the seam (d) to the reinforcement straps.

Les résultats sont résumés dans le tableau ci-dessous : Type de couture (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) Pénétration en µg/cm2 <0.08 <0.08 <0.08 <0.08 <0.08 <0.08 <0.08 The results are summarized in the table below: type of seam (has) (b) (vs) (d) (e) (g) (g) Penetration in µg/cm 2 <0.08 <0.08 <0.08 <0.08 <0.08 <0.08 <0.08

It can be seen that, whatever the seam variant tested, the tests are all conclusive and that no penetration of contaminant is detected.

The above description clearly illustrates that through its various characteristics and their advantages, the present invention achieves the objectives it had set itself. In particular, it provides protective clothing which makes it possible to reinforce, in particular at the seams, the protective clothing against the effects of contaminants in all their forms, whether in liquid form or in vapor form, while retaining the wearer comfort.
