Definitions

  • Such a method and such an edging strip are from document WO 01/36168 A1 famous.
  • panel-shaped workpiece or furniture panel means in particular a wood-based panel, for example chipboard, fiberboard or the like. In principle, however, it can also be a panel made of other materials or a composite panel.
  • the furniture board is preferably provided with a coating on one or two sides—that is, on its top and/or underside—therefore it is in particular a coated furniture board.
  • the coatings used on the upper and/or lower side are recommended, for example, films or resin-impregnated papers. In principle, however, other coatings can also be used.
  • edge strips or cover strips are also referred to simply as edges or edge bands, alternatively also as edge bands.
  • the edging strips serve to provide a waterproof and permanent finish to the furniture panels and can also serve decorative purposes.
  • the front cover layer of the edging is that layer which faces the viewer when the edging strip is in the installed state and is therefore the front and visible layer layer of the edge strip.
  • the cover layer can also consist of several layers, that is to say it can comprise several sub-layers as it were.
  • the EP 1 163 864 A1 describes, for example, a connection between an edging strip and a furniture panel in which the edging strip is applied directly to the furniture panel without the use of adhesive. To do this, the surface of the edge strip is melted. This can be done, for example, by laser radiation.
  • EP 1 852 242 A1 Alternatively describes the EP 1 852 242 A1 a process in which an edge strip is co-extruded with a layer of hot-melt adhesive and then attached to a furniture panel.
  • the layer of hot-melt adhesive is dyed in the color of the cover strip and therefore no joint is visually discernible after joining.
  • the hot-melt adhesive layer is melted or activated, for example by means of laser radiation.
  • the invention has for its object to provide a method of the type described above, with the edge strip simple, functionally reliable and avoiding a high energy consumption on the Furniture board can be applied.
  • a visually flawless result should preferably be achieved, in particular while avoiding contamination of the adhesive joint.
  • the invention is based on the object of specifying an edge strip, in particular for use in this method.
  • the invention teaches, in a method for fastening an edge strip of the type described above, that the adhesive layer is formed on the basis of a pressure-sensitive adhesive, that the edge strip is applied to the narrow surface and connected to the narrow surface by the action of pressure, and that the pressure-sensitive adhesive is at least partially networked or cross-linked.
  • crosslinking means in particular the linking of molecules or macromolecules of the pressure-sensitive adhesive to one another.
  • both monomers can be linked or crosslinked to form macromolecules and existing macromolecules can also be linked or crosslinked with one another.
  • the crosslinking or linking reaction is therefore preferably a polymerization reaction.
  • the molecules or macromolecules, which are preferably part of the pressure-sensitive adhesive have suitable groups for this purpose, which—possibly after an initiation step—are capable of crosslinking or polymerization. It is also possible for molecules or groups of molecules that are part of the panel-shaped workpiece, for example part of the material or of a composite adhesive contained there, to be included in the crosslinking or polymerization reaction.
  • the invention is initially based on the finding that the use of a pressure-sensitive adhesive means that a large amount of energy is required to attach the edging strip to a furniture panel can be avoided because activation of the adhesive layer by high-energy radiation or hot air is not necessary. Rather, the edge strip is connected to the narrow surface by the action of pressure, so that the method according to the invention does not require the high expenditure of energy for activating the adhesive layer or for heating a hot-melt adhesive. In this respect, damage to the cover layer due to indirect heating can also be prevented, since the method according to the invention involves, so to speak, cold bonding of the edging strip to the furniture board.
  • the invention is based on the finding that the at least partial crosslinking of the pressure-sensitive adhesive means that the permanent tackiness or residual tackiness of the adhesive layer - in the crosslinked area - can be almost completely avoided and there is no longer an undesirable accumulation of dust and dirt particles in the transition area between the Workpiece or the furniture panel and the edge strip due to the permanent tackiness or residual tackiness of the adhesive layer.
  • the effect of pressure means in particular a slight pressing on of the edge strip to connect the edge strip to the narrow surface by means of the pressure-sensitive adhesive.
  • the cover layer or front cover layer preferably consists of at least one thermoplastic polymer. In principle, however, other materials, for example wood and/or paper materials, can also be considered for the cover layer. According to a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention, the cover layer consists of a thermoplastic polymer from the group of polystyrenes (e.g. ABS), polyvinyl chlorides (e.g. PVC-U), polyolefins (e.g.
  • top layer is provided with additives, for example with fillers for reinforcement or the like.
  • the edge strip and/or the narrow surface has at least one adhesive layer and this adhesive layer is based on a pressure-sensitive adhesive.
  • the adhesive layer or the pressure-sensitive adhesive is particularly preferably based on at least one component from the group: acrylates, polyacrylates, epoxides, polyepoxides, polyesters, unsaturated polyester resins, polyurethanes, polysiloxanes, rubbers, vinyl acetates, polyvinyl acetates.
  • the adhesive layer or the pressure-sensitive adhesive can also be formed on the basis of other components which are usually used as pressure-sensitive adhesives and are known to those skilled in the art.
  • the adhesive layer is preferably applied to the edge strip and/or the narrow surface by spraying.
  • the adhesive layer can also be applied to the edge strip and/or the narrow surface by other application methods, for example by methods based on coextrusion and/or by rolling and/or brushing and/or nozzle application.
  • the pressure-sensitive adhesive it is also possible for the pressure-sensitive adhesive to be applied to the edging strip and/or the narrow surface as an adhesive strip in the course of extrusion or coextrusion or in an edgeband gluing machine.
  • the adhesive layer is provided with at least one additive.
  • This at least one additive can be, for example, a resin to improve the pressure-sensitive adhesion.
  • the adhesive layer can contain additives such as stabilizers, antioxidants, fillers, crosslinkers, color pigments or dyes.
  • a preferred embodiment of the invention is characterized in that the adhesive layer is colorless.
  • the adhesive layer can also contain color pigments and/or dyes, and the adhesive layer then preferably has a color that corresponds or essentially corresponds to the color of the front cover layer.
  • the crosslinking of the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the adhesive layer is initiated by irradiation with a radiation source.
  • the radiation source is preferably a UV radiation source, and particularly preferably an LED UV radiation source.
  • the crosslinking is initiated by UV radiation.
  • Irradiation with a radiation source thus initiates the crosslinking or linking reaction, and certain groups of monomers or polymers capable of crosslinking or polymerization are preferably activated by the irradiation. These groups can in particular be C ⁇ C double bonds.
  • Irradiation with a radiation source forms reactive molecules, for example radicals or ions, which initiate the crosslinking or linking reaction.
  • the crosslinking or linking reactions can consequently involve free-radical, ionic or hybrid mechanisms.
  • the particular crosslinking mechanism depends on the choice of pressure-sensitive adhesive and the radiation source.
  • the adhesive layer contains at least one photoinitiator or molecules with photoreactive groups, which is preferably activated by irradiation with a radiation source and subsequently initiates the crosslinking of the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the adhesive layer.
  • the at least one photoinitiator absorbs in particular the radiation introduced by means of the radiation source and breaks down into reactive forms or releases substances that start the crosslinking reactions.
  • the edging strip - arranged on the back of the cover layer - has at least one adhesive layer based on a pressure-sensitive adhesive, this edging strip being connected to the narrow surface of a furniture panel by the action of pressure and the pressure-sensitive adhesive being at least partially crosslinked and the Crosslinking is initiated by irradiation with a UV radiation source.
  • An alternative embodiment of the method according to the invention is characterized in that the crosslinking of the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the adhesive layer is chemically initiated by at least one initiating component.
  • the initiation component is preferably a free-radical component, particularly preferably a peroxidic component. In principle, however, the initiation component can also be an ion-forming component. It is recommended that the crosslinking of the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the adhesive layer is accelerated by at least one accelerator component.
  • the initiating component is preferably converted into a reactive form by the accelerator component and this reactive form of the initiating component initiates the crosslinking or linking reaction.
  • the mechanisms for crosslinking or linking the pressure-sensitive adhesive can be radical, ionic or hybrid.
  • the initiation component is a peroxidic component. This peroxidic component then forms—particularly in conjunction with a suitable accelerator component—radicals which initiate the crosslinking or linking reaction.
  • connecting layer means in particular a layer that is applied to the edge strip or the narrow surface and can contain, for example, the initiating component or the accelerator component and is not an adhesive layer based on a pressure-sensitive adhesive.
  • the connecting layer is consequently a neutral layer, so to speak, which can contain, for example, the initiating component or the accelerator component. Consequently, the initiation component is preferably part of the adhesive layer or such a connecting layer.
  • the accelerator component is preferably part of an adhesive layer or a connecting layer which does not contain any initiating component. Accordingly, the initiation component and the accelerator component are preferably in different layers and the initiation of the crosslinking or linking reaction particularly preferably only begins when these two layers come into contact with one another. In any case, the accelerator component is recommended as part of a layer that does not contain the initiating component.
  • a particularly preferred embodiment of the method according to the invention is characterized in that both the edge strip and the narrow surface have at least one adhesive layer, the adhesive layer of the edge strip preferably containing the accelerator component and the adhesive layer of the narrow surface preferably containing the initiating component.
  • the adhesive layer of the edge strip contains the initiating component and the adhesive layer of the narrow surface contains the accelerator component.
  • the adhesive layer of the edge strip contains the initiating component and the adhesive layer of the narrow surface contains the accelerator component.
  • the adhesive layer contains the accelerator component and the adhesive layer of the narrow surface contains the accelerator component.
  • the adhesive layer then preferably contains the accelerator component or the initiation component.
  • the connecting layer then contains in particular the other of the two components.
  • the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the adhesive layer is crosslinked after the edge strip and the narrow surface have been joined.
  • the edge strip and the narrow surface are thus initially connected by the action of pressure by means of the pressure-sensitive adhesive and the crosslinking or linking reaction is subsequently started.
  • this can take place directly through the contact of an initiating component and an accelerator component.
  • the initiating component and the accelerator component as already explained above, can be components of different layers, for example.
  • the accelerator component or the initiation component is part of a layer, that the edge strip and the narrow surface are connected according to the invention and that the other component is then applied to the joint or the space between the workpiece and the edge strip, in particular by spraying or brushing on, and the crosslinking reaction is preferably initiated in this way.
  • the crosslinking or linking reaction can take place after the connection of the edge strip and the narrow surface by irradiation with a radiation source.
  • the crosslinking or linking reaction can occur beforehand Connection of edge strip and narrow surface is initiated or started.
  • the adhesive layer can, for example, already be irradiated with a radiation source before it is connected, so that the crosslinking or linking reaction is initiated and the edge strip is then connected to the narrow surface by the action of pressure.
  • the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the adhesive layer is only partially crosslinked.
  • the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the adhesive layer is therefore preferably not completely crosslinked.
  • the pressure-sensitive adhesive is crosslinked only in the area of the joint surface between the edge strip and the narrow surface. This configuration is based on the finding that the tackiness of the adhesive layer below the joint surface is retained and the permanent tackiness or residual tackiness in this area can be prevented by crosslinking only in the area of the joint surface.
  • the regional crosslinking of the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the adhesive layer can be controlled, for example, via the penetration depth of the irradiation or by the targeted, regional use of the photoinitiators, initiating and/or accelerator components. In principle, however, it is also within the scope of the invention for the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the adhesive layer to be completely crosslinked.
  • the adhesive layer (on the edge strip and/or the panel) be provided with a protective cover, for example a protective film, to protect the adhesive layer or the pressure-sensitive adhesive and that this protective film should preferably be provided immediately before the edge strip is connected to the narrow surface removed from the edging and/or the panel.
  • a protective cover for example a protective film
  • the invention also teaches an edge strip for the narrow surface coating of panel-shaped workpieces, preferably furniture panels - in particular for use in the method described above - with at least one front cover layer and at least one adhesive layer arranged on the back of the cover layer for attaching the edge strip the workpiece.
  • the edge strip according to the invention is characterized in that the adhesive layer is based on a pressure-sensitive adhesive, the pressure-sensitive adhesive being crosslinkable.
  • the adhesive layer preferably contains either a photoinitiator for initiating the crosslinking by radiation or an initiating component for initiating the crosslinking chemically or an accelerator component for accelerating the crosslinking.
  • a particularly preferred embodiment of the edge strip according to the invention is characterized in that the adhesive layer is sprayed onto the cover layer.
  • the edging strip may also include additional layers.
  • the invention is based on the finding that the cold bonding of the edge strip to the narrow surface means that the high energy expenditure required in the methods known from the prior art or from practice for activating or melting the melting or functional layer is necessary is, can be avoided.
  • a pressure-sensitive adhesive is used and the edge strip can be connected to the narrow surface by the action of pressure. On the one hand, this reduces the necessary energy expenditure considerably and, on the other hand, damage to the top layer due to its indirect heating is avoided, since the edge strip and narrow surface are connected without heating.
  • Another positive aspect is that due to the at least partial crosslinking of the pressure-sensitive adhesive according to the invention, permanent tackiness or residual tackiness of the adhesive joint can be almost completely ruled out and, as a result, no dirt and dust particles can accumulate in the joint area or in the transition area between the workpiece or furniture panel and edge strip accumulate. Contamination of the joint can thus be avoided. This is of particular advantage when using the furniture panels in the health sector. It should also be noted that the method according to the invention is characterized by a particularly high degree of economic efficiency, since the energy consumption is considerably lower than that of the known methods.
  • a furniture panel 3 is shown.
  • the furniture panel 3 is provided with a coating 6 on both sides.
  • This coating 6 can be, for example, foils or resin-impregnated paper.
  • an edge strip 1 is connected to at least one narrow surface of the furniture board 3 .
  • the edging strip 1 has at least one cover layer 4 on the front side.
  • the edging strip 1--arranged on the back of the cover layer 4--and/or the narrow surface has at least one adhesive layer 5.
  • the adhesive layer 5 is based on a pressure-sensitive adhesive.
  • the adhesive layer 5 is preferably provided with at least one additive. This can, for example, be a resin for improving the pressure-sensitive adhesion or stabilizers, antioxidants, fillers or the like.
  • Edge strip 1 applied to the narrow surface and connected to the narrow surface by applying pressure.
  • the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the adhesive layer 5 is at least partially crosslinked.
  • the crosslinking of the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the adhesive layer 5 is initiated by irradiation with a radiation source 7 .
  • the radiation source 7 can in particular be a UV radiation source. It is within the scope of the invention for the adhesive layer 5 to contain a photoinitiator, which is preferably activated by irradiation with a radiation source 7 and subsequently initiates the crosslinking of the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the adhesive layer 5 .
  • the crosslinking of the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the adhesive layer 5 takes place after the connection of the edge strip 1 and the narrow surface.
  • the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the adhesive layer 5 is only partially crosslinked.
  • the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the adhesive layer 5 is crosslinked only in the area of the joint surface 8 between the edge strip 1 and the narrow surface. The crosslinking in only certain areas can be controlled in particular by the penetration depth of the radiation.
  • the radiation sources 7 can be part of a device for connecting the furniture panel 3 and the edging strip 1 . In principle, it is also within the scope of the invention that the radiation sources 7 can be used in a mobile manner and, if required, can be arranged above the pressure-sensitive adhesive or the adhesive layer 5 to be crosslinked.
  • the figure shows a first embodiment of the method according to the invention, in which the crosslinking of the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the adhesive layer 5 is initiated by irradiation with a radiation source 7 .
  • the crosslinking of the pressure-sensitive adhesive of the adhesive layer 5 is chemically initiated by at least one initiating component.
  • Crosslinking is then preferably accelerated by at least one accelerator component.
  • Such an embodiment is not shown in the figure.
