Definitions
- the present invention relates to a circular electrical connector with a son-pass seal. More particularly, the invention relates to a circular electrical connector with a son-pass seal which provides a tight and secure connection reliably. The invention also relates to a connection with such a connector and a rear connection.
- a preferred type of circular connector is one that conforms to the ASD-STAN standard, for example EN 3646 or EN 2997.
- These connectors comprise a female part with a socket.
- the bushing is substantially cylindrical extending along a central axis and with an axial end provided with cavities extending inwardly of the bushing in the direction of the axis.
- the cavities each lead to an electrical contact, and are adapted to receive electrical elements, for example a wire or pin connected to a wire, or the pins of a plug connected to the wires, etc.
- the socket is housed in a housing, extending in the direction of the socket by surrounding it.
- the housing including the circumferential wall surrounding the socket, is provided with an attachment means, for example a thread on the circumferential wall.
- the connector further comprises a sealing grommet, which is an elastomeric layer attached to the axial end, disposed on the cavities of the socket to seal the connector.
- the grommet is also circular and about the same diameter as that of the bushing, comprising a front face, often more forward than the housing, and a circumferential wall. Its front face includes holes through the son-pass and overlooking a respective cavity.
- the connector can be condensed when it is mounted in an airplane, and the grommet with electrical elements, or shutters when the electrical elements are not used, plugged through the grommet, prevent the water or the fluid enters the cavities of the connector.
- the electrical elements are generally provided with a rear connection, which comprises a substantially conical sleeve surrounding the electrical elements with a corresponding attachment means, such as a threaded clamping nut rotatably mounted on the sleeve, for attach to the connector.
- a preferred type of back splice is one that conforms to AS85049.
- the coupling sleeve When the connection is made, the coupling sleeve is fully engaged (abutted in this case, but can be nested) with the connector housing. In this state, the chamfer clamps the shutters and electrical elements in the cavities to improve the sealing of the grommet.
- This connector and this connection are of known types, shown in FIGS. 1A to 1C.
- the housing, as well as the connection are sometimes made of conductive material intended to provide a path for electricity (accidental or grounded) and the incomplete commitment affects this path of electricity.
- the back fitting does not even pass around the grommet due to expansion. As a result, a proper connection is not achieved in terms of sealing, clamping and electrical conductivity.
- the present invention thus provides a circular electrical connector comprising a sleeve extending along an axis and provided at one axial end of cavities, and a sealing grommet disposed on the axial end defining a front face through which electrical elements can be plugged into the cavities and a circumferential wall, the connector further comprising a housing in which the socket is housed, the housing extending in the direction of the axis of the socket surrounding it, the housing comprising an attachment means adapted to be attached with a rear connector, the connector comprising a retaining ring around the circumferential wall of the grommet, the ring being adapted to limit the expansion of the diameter of the grommet when the elements electrical devices are plugged through the grommet.
- the ring is of circular shape.
- the ring is of uniform thickness
- the ring is made of composite material.
- the ring is made of stainless steel.
- the surface of the outer wall of the rod is less rough than the circumferential wall of the grommet.
- the foremost part of the rod is at the same level as the front face of the grommet. More preferably, the ring is adapted to prevent the expansion of the diameter of the grommet.
- the present invention also proposes a connection comprising a connector such as that defined above, and a rear connection, the rear connection comprising electrical elements, a sleeve surrounding the electrical elements, and an attachment means, in which the electrical elements are plugged in. in the cavities of the socket, and the rear connector and the connector are attached together by their attachment means.
- the rear connection comprises a right angle at its foremost part.
- FIG. 1A illustrates a connector of known type
- Figure 1B illustrates a partial sectional view of a connection comprising the connector of Figure 1A and a rear connection of known type;
- Figure 1C illustrates a partial sectional view of a portion of the connection of Figure 1B;
- FIG. 2A illustrates a connector according to a preferred embodiment
- FIG. 2B illustrates a partial sectional view of a connection comprising the connector of FIG. 2A and a rear connection of known type
- FIG. 2C illustrates a connection similar to that of FIG. 2B, with a modified rear connection.
- FIG. 1A illustrates a circular electrical connector 20 with a son-pass seal 25 of known type (without electrical elements or plugs plugged into its cavities).
- FIG. 1B illustrates a connection 70 comprising a connector 20 of known type and a rear connector 40 of known type. Electrical elements 42 of the connector 40, which are individual wires 42 here, are plugged into the connector 20 and unused cavities 23 allow the plugs 32 to be plugged in. Of course, the connector 40 may comprise wires 42 connected to a connector. taken with several pins instead of individual wires 42.
- FIG. 1C illustrates a partial sectional view of a part of the connection 70 of FIG. 1B, illustrating the case where the sleeve 43 of the fitting is hooked on the grommet 25 due to the expansion of the grommet 25. As already described above, this connector 20 is not always able to guarantee a tight and secure connection.
- FIG. 2A illustrates a connector 20 according to a preferred embodiment. It is substantially the same as the connector 20 of FIGS. 1A to 1C, with the exception of a son-holding rod 35.
- the ring 35 is intended to limit the expansion of the grommet 25. It is arranged around the grommet 25 on the socket 21 of the connector 20. More particularly, it is placed around the circumferential wall 27 of the grommet 25.
- the diameter of the inner wall 36 is the same as that of the circumferential wall 27 of the grommet 25. Of course, this diameter may be slightly smaller than that of the circumferential wall 27 of the grommet 25, for example to allow a more secure engagement between the rod 35 and the grommet 25 (if the grommet 25 is of a fairly flexible material). Also, the internal diameter of the inner wall 36 of the rod 35 may be slightly wider than that of the son-pass 25.
- the rod 35 is rather thin not to take much space in the radial direction.
- the thickness of the ring 35 may vary along its circumference, but a uniform thickness is generally preferred.
- its outer wall 37 is located in the middle of the outer diameter of the grommet (without electrical elements 42 or shutters 32) and the inside diameter of the foremost part, typically the chamfer 44 of the sleeve 43, of the coupling 40 intended to be attached to the connector 20.
- the game facilitates the passage of the sleeve 43 around the sleeve 21 during the initial phase of engagement.
- the skilled person can choose a thickness of the rod 35 which is different depending on the structural integrity and the preferred game.
- the ring 35 limits the expansion of the diameter of the grommet 25 when the electrical elements 42 or shutters 32 are plugged into the connector 20. It is configured such that the diameter of its outer wall 37 does not change, or increases very little, when the electrical elements 42 are plugged onto the connector 20. If it is of the type where the diameter of the outer wall 37 does not change, the expansion of the wire-pass diameter 25 is prevented (limited completely). Therefore, the ring does not allow the grommet 25 to exceed a certain diameter.
- the ring 35 of the type where the diameter of the outer wall 37 does not change is preferred, the type where the diameter may increase a little may also be suitable.
- the important thing is that once electrical elements 42 or shutters 32 are plugged in, the grommet 25 with the rod 35 does not interfere with the subsequent connection with the connector 40.
- the rod 35 may be of a height that is less than or greater than the thickness of the layer of the grommet 25.
- the rod 35 is of a height which is at least equal to the thickness of the grommet 25, and disposed on the grommet 25 so that it does not protrude from the end face 26 of the grommet 25 when it is installed on the connector 20.
- the foremost part of the rod 35 is at the same level as the front face 26 of the grommet 25 in the direction of the axis of the bushing 21.
- the surface of the outer wall 37 of the rod 35 may be smooth or rough. A smooth surface can facilitate advancement of the sleeve 43 around the ring 35, while a rough surface can facilitate hand handling during installation.
- the surface of the inner wall 36 of the rod 35 may be smooth or rough. A smooth surface may facilitate the installation of the ring 35 around the grommet 25, while a rough surface may help to hold the ring 35 around the grommet 25 once installed.
- the surface of the outer wall 37 of the rod 35 is less rough than that of the son-pass 25.
- the retaining ring 35 is made of a material resistant to expansion, which may be due to physical force or even temperature, allowing it to limit or prevent expansion of the grommet 25.
- Materials with structural strength and High temperature holdings are preferred.
- the ring 35 is in one piece.
- the mounting of the ring 35 is essentially the same for all the connectors
- the rod 35 is aligned axially with the bushing 21 of the connector 20, and advanced beyond the edge of the grommet 25. Then it is lowered along the circumferential wall 27 of the grommet 25. If the connector 20 comprises a shoulder 31 downwardly of the grommet 25, for example, between the grommet 25 and the housing 28, or the bushing 21 and the housing 28, the rod 35 can be lowered to this shoulder 31, so that it lands on the shoulder 31 while remaining around and in contact with the grommet 25. To facilitate mounting on the grommet 25, a chamfer may be provided on the rod 35.
- the rod 35 can be mounted on the sleeve 21 of the connector 20 during manufacture or just before the installation of the connector 20 in a harness. In addition, the rod 35 may also be retro-fitted to the connectors 20 installed in the pre-existing connections 70.
- the rod 35 may be modified by those skilled in the art depending on the type of connector, the use, the temperature, the required tightening torque, etc.
- the ring 35 may be of slightly elliptical shape, for example to correspond with a grommet 25 of a slightly elliptical connector.
- the sealing grommet 25 is illustrated with the holes 24 facing the cavities 23 of the sleeve 21. These may be holes which close on themselves, for example without the electrical elements. It can also be of the type where the holes are formed when the electrical elements are plugged in for the first time.
- the attachment means may also be different, for example, instead of the clamping nut 46 with thread 49, the connector 40 may comprise threads on the sleeve, whereas instead of the thread 29 on the circumferential wall 30 of the housing, the connector 20 may comprise a tightening nut with thread. Furthermore, instead of the thread 29, 49, the attachment means between the connector and the rear connector may comprise a bayonet system.
- FIG. 2C illustrates a connection 110 with such a connector 50, the right angle 45 not touching the ring 35, its inside diameter being wider than the outer diameter of the ring 35.
- the solution proposed by the invention is advantageous. With the rod 35 installed around the grommet 25, the expansion of the grommet 25 is limited or prevented, and therefore the clearance between the connector 40, 50 and the rod 35 remains essentially the same. As a result, the connector 40, 50 always manages to engage fully with the connector 20 and to attach together. Moreover, the fact that the outer diameter of the rod 35, that is to say the diameter of the outer wall 37, remains essentially the same when the elements 42 or shutters 32 are plugged, implies that the connector 40, 50 comes into contact with the ring 35 always at the same point, or not at all, this accuracy providing consistency in terms of the reliability of the connection 100, 110 and the quality of the seal.
- the connector 20 is adapted to receive the electrical elements 42 in the cavities 23 does not prevent it from receiving other elements, for example shutters 32, which is also within the scope of the invention .
- the fact that the rod 35 is adapted to limit or prevent the expansion of the diameter of the grommet 25 when the electrical elements 42 are plugged through the grommet 25 does not prevent it from limiting or preventing expansion. of the diameter of the grommet 25 when other elements are plugged, for example shutters 32.
- the embodiments are described with respect to specific connectors and rear connectors, the skilled person visits that the invention is suitable for connectors of other types with the same problem of expansion of the grommet.
