It is possible instead to fit the frame without the portal fitted. The portal, however, helps to keep the frame square.

  • Other forms of lock mechanism can likewise be used, and many forms thereof are made to a similar or standardised layout, commonly with a door spindle aperture in one position and a keyhole, or Eurolock receiving aperture located spaced therefrom.
  • This lock mechanism is installed in a location that is spaced rearwardly of the front panel 24 of the hinged portal 16, albeit aligned with the cover plate of the cover plate mechanism. This ensures that the hinged mechanism is hidden when the cover plate 28 is closed, and the spacing is generally needed as commonly the lock mechanism will be longer than the cover plate mechanism, whereby it needs to be located so as not to interfere with either an installation of the cover plate mechanism, with its mounting frame and push latch or the like, or the operation of the cover plate mechanism.
  • the covering of the lock mechanism with the cover plate also allows a smarter or cleaner appearance to be provided for the hinged portal when the latch or lock mechanism is not needed to be used.
  • Figure 3 additionally shows the arrangement of the push latch 30 located at the other end of the cover plate 28 - herein the bottom portion.
  • a bracket 54 supports the push latch 30 so as to have its sprung biasing member 42, as best seen in Figure 7 , selectively engageable against a rear or back 34 of the cover plate 28 to enable the condition of Figure 1 , or a sprung movement to or towards that position, to be achievable.
  • the cover plate 28 is shown in its closed condition - its default condition due to the geometry of the hinge axis 44 and the centre of gravity of the cover plate 28, and the default condition of the push latch 30 being to support the bottom portion of the cover plate 18 in its flush condition with respect to the front panel 24 of the hinged portal or door 16.
  • the cover plate 28 is instead now rotated around its hinge axis 44 into the fully opened condition, whereby it is possible to see the square hole for a spindle pin of a handle and a lock hole - in this instance for receiving a Eurolock mechanism, as is commonly the case with lock mechanisms when first received. It may of course be possible instead to have a lock mechanism with a pre-installed key lock mechanism, including a pre-installed Eurolock mechanism, in the lower of the two holes, or some other lock mechanism, including a shorter one which can be located potentially closer to the cover plate 28, if so desired.
  • a handle 60 for turning the handle mechanism of the latch or lock mechanism 12 can now be used.
  • a T-key handle 60 is used instead of a conventional handle with a long spindle.
  • the T-key handle 60 has a square spindle 62 at its end for inserting into the previously described handle spindle hole.
  • an extended spindle or a long key, might instead be used for accessing the lock mechanism - either the top mechanism or the bottom mechanism as shown, where a dual mechanism like this is used.
  • the key mechanism only works once a Eurolock or something else appropriate, has been installed in the hole therefor (assuming a different lock mechanism, with a pre-installed key lock, is not used instead.
  • the T key is able to rotate under the raised cover plate.
  • it would be at least 5cm above the centre of the spindle aperture or the key lock aperture if that is the upper of the two, more preferably this is between 5 and 12 cm above it.
  • the ability to provide access to both the door handle spindle hole and the key lock mechanism, when provided, is preferably achieved, as shown, by the cover plate being of an elongate form, and thus preferably at least 13cm long, but more preferably between 15 and 20 cm long, and most preferably between 17 and 20 cm long.
  • the lock mechanism can be mounted closer to the back of the closed cover plate 28, although, as discussed with reference to Fig 10 , the preferred arrangement has it spaced therefrom and attached to a rear of a first half of the door, for easy installation, and perhaps also so that the hinged portal or door 16 can be constructed from two wide (or deep) halves, to arrive at a door having a width (or depth) exceeding 8cm (the dimension measured from the front panel to the rear of the door).
  • cover plate 28 there is the cover plate 28. It has two stiffening ribs 46, one down each side thereof. Figure 7 shows one, but Figure 8 shows them both.
  • the cover plate 28 has an elongated lozenge shape to its front face, and thus it has rounded tops and bottoms and straight sides. This is a convenient shape for both simplicity and ease of manufacture in respect of the hole in the front panel 24 of the hinged portal 17 for receiving it. No sharp edges will be left in the hole made to accommodate this cover plate 28. Other shapes are also possible.
  • the mounting frame 26 which is arranged in the form of an arched member 82 with a base plate 84.
  • the base plate 84 is recessed relative to the sides and top of the arched member. This is optional, but where the mounting frame is attached directly to the back of the hinged door 16 it becomes advantageous as it gives a space for the plate thickness of the cover plate to fit.
  • bolt holes 86 are provided above the base plate 84. These bolt holes 86 are for receiving a pivot bolt 56 about which the cover plate 28 can pivot.
  • the centreline of the pivot bolt 56 thus defines the axis 44 about which the cover plate 28 rotates between its open and closed conditions.
  • the rear of the cover plate 28 has at least one fulcrum member 38.
  • it is a single fulcrum 38, as shown in Figure 8 . Since the width of the fulcrum 38 is narrower than the span of the arched member 82 (between the sides thereof), washers 64 are also used - they effectively widen the fulcrum 38 such that it fits neatly but not tightly between the two upright sides of the arched member 82. The washers also serve to allow a smooth rotation.
  • the bolt 56 in this embodiment is inserted through the first bolt hole 86, through the first washer 64, then through the fulcrum 48 and the second washer 64 and following that through the second bolt hole 86.
  • a nut can then secure onto the threaded end of the bolt to secure it.

  • the arch height above the base plate is also required to be sufficient to allow the top or first edge 48 of the cover plate 28 to swing through the arch. This then allows the cover plate to be opened as while the bottom opens upwardly the top rotates in and through the arch. See, for example, Figure 5 .
  • the base plate of the mounting frame could potentially resist rotation of the cover plate such that the bottom portion thereof be pushed into the door, should it need to.
  • first the cover plate will engage against a biasing member 42 of a push latch 30.
  • the push plate is mounted at or adjacent the opposite, or bottom, second end edge 50 of the cover plate. This engagement thus prevents excessive inward rotation of the cover plate.
  • Some inward rotation is needed, however, to activate the push latch 30, as it acts with a resisted extension, only extending after an inward push, and then resetting again on a subsequent inward push.
  • the push latch 30 can be of a standard form, as discussed above, and the illustrated embodiment is shown to have a rectangular cross-section for the biasing member 42 thereof. However, other forms are also possible.
  • the push latch can even be just a biasing member in the body of the push member, with a default outward position, and a biased inward range of positions, such that a finger can push it in if needed. It could even be of a design that acts as a soft close mechanism with a user opening the cover plate by instead pushing at the top end of the cover plate, above the axis thereof. This latter option is potentially hard to operate, however, given the small length of that area, and thus the large force needed.
  • the push latch is a standard pus in to release, push in to return, push latch.
  • a biasing device or spring is located to allow the biasing member 42 to retract and compress the spring and then extend under the bias force, with a switch toggle mechanism between the extended and retracted conditions, as well known in the art of cupboard doors.
  • the push latch 30 is mounted to the hinged portal by a bracket 54.
  • the bracket has various holes for bolts 66 and further holes for screws 68.
  • the bolts and screws can be used to affix the bracket 54 to, for example, two flanges at the back of the front panel 24 of the hinged portal 16 and to the illustrated flanges of the push latch 30.
  • Other mounting systems could also be used.
  • an engagement plate 52 can also be provided.
  • the engagement plate 52 is provided and it is of a circular shape, and preferably made of steel for hard wearingness.
  • this cover plate 28 has a recess 70 in its back - see Figure 8 .
  • the engagement plate 52 can thus just be glued into it.
  • Other engagement systems can also be used.
  • Figure 8 shows that the fulcrum 38 has a rounding on one of its corners. This rounding can be seen in Figure 5 to allow the front panel to rotate around its axis without hitting the base plate of the mounting frame 26.
  • bracket 54 can be fitted with pre-drilled holes with screw fit inserts and self-locking fasteners, as shown. These are optional and other connecting systems for these screws or bolts can be utilised, such as conventional nuts and washers. They facilitate an easier installation of the push or touch latch 30 thereto, and also the fitting of the bracket 54 to the flanges (not shown) on the back of the front panel 24 (access to which can be difficult or impossible, depending upon the form of the hinged portal 16.
  • the hinged portal can be made of a single sheet member, preferably steel, wherein the sheet is cut to have four flanges, each of which are folded in the manner as shown, thus forming a rectangular shape with flanged side walls at the top and bottom and the sides, with one of the flanged sidewalls having a narrow rear flange, corresponding to the size of the flanges of the top and bottom walls, and the other side wall having a rear flange and the further flanged side wall having a larger rear flange for receiving the latch or lock mechanism thereon.
  • That larger flange can have pre-formed therein apertures for mounting bolts of the latch or lock mechanism and a larger aperture for providing access to the key or socket holes, or the handle socket holes, of the latch or lock mechanism.
  • the lock mechanism may be installed on the inside of the front part of the hinged portal 16, whereby the latch or lock mechanism is mounted closer to the front panel, or as preferred it is mounted at the back thereof, for easier mounting thereof.
  • a further part of the hinged portal or door is subsequently affixed to the rear of this pre-formed frame, as can be seen in Figs 5 and 6 .
  • a single piece door might alternatively be provided by wrapping the door around the inner components.
