Definitions

  • the present application relates to a lubricating composition, in particular for industrial gears.
  • Said composition advantageously has properties allowing it to be used in food contact applications, in particular incidental food contact, and at very low temperatures.
  • Lubricating compositions for industrial gears, used in the food industry must meet the incidental food contact criteria defined in chapter 21, ⁇ 178.3570 (“Lubricants with incidental food contact”) of the “Code of Federal Regulation” of the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). Installations in the food industry can also be used in environments with low or even very low temperatures, for example at temperatures below -22°C. It is therefore necessary to be able to provide a lubricating composition, suitable for incidental food contact, and which is versatile in terms of the temperature of use, in particular which can be used at very low temperatures, for example at temperatures below -22 °C.
  • a lubricating composition susceptible to incidental food contact is for example described in the prior art US 6,087,308 .
  • PAO Poly-alpha-olefins
  • White oils also meet incidental food contact criteria. However, their cold properties are not satisfactory. The addition of a pour point depressant (PPD) is therefore necessary. However, to date, only one commercial PPD meets the incidental food contact criteria.
  • PPD pour point depressant
  • An objective of the present invention is to provide lubricating compositions meeting the food contact criteria and having a sufficiently low pour point to be able to be used at low or even very low temperatures.
  • Another object of the present invention is to provide such compositions which also have a high viscosity, in particular at 40°C.
  • Yet another object of the present invention is to provide such compositions at reduced cost.
  • the base oil according to the invention is not a PAO.
  • Base oils are defined according to the API classification (or their equivalents according to the ATIEL classification) (table A).
  • Table A Saturates content Sulfur content Viscosity index (VI) Group I Mineral oils ⁇ 90% > 0.03% 80 ⁇ IV ⁇ 120 Group II Hydrocracked oils ⁇ 90% ⁇ 0.03% 80 ⁇ IV ⁇ 120 Group III Hydrocracked or hydro-isomerized oils ⁇ 90% ⁇ 0.03% ⁇ 120 Group IV Poly-alpha-olefins (PAO) Group V Esters and other bases not included in groups I to IV
  • the base oil according to the invention is chosen from base oils for food contact and in particular for incidental food contact.
  • the base oil is chosen from the group of base oils for food contact chosen from group II according to the classes defined in the API classification or their equivalents according to the ATIEL classification, preferably among the white oils.
  • White oils are oils well known to those skilled in the art. They correspond to highly refined mineral oils and therefore of high purity. They have properties of stability, in particular thermal stability, they are chemically inert, they are not toxic, they are odorless and colorless. White oils are notably defined in the FDA's "Code of Federal Regulation” (2016) in sections 172.878 and 178.3620. Any type of white oil can be used in the invention. For example, white oils are chosen from ISO VG15 and ISO VG68 grade oils. For example, the white oils are Finavestan A80B ® or Finavestan A360B ® marketed by the company Total.
  • the hydrogenated polyisobutylene which can be used in a composition according to the invention is chosen from hydrogenated polyisobutylenes with a number molar mass (Mn) of between 400 and 2000, preferably between 400 and 1500, for example between 400 and 1300.
  • Mn number molar mass
  • hydrogenated polyisobutylenes of the invention may be Indopol H300 ® , Indopol H25 ® or else Indopol H7 ® marketed by the company Ineos Oligomers.
  • the hydrogenation of polyisobutylene can be total or partial.
  • the ester copolymer is chosen from polymers comprising a hydrocarbon skeleton, pendant (or branching or branching) hydrocarbon groups and pendant (or branching or branching) ester groups.
  • Patent applications EP2014750 and US2543964 describe in particular ester polymers.
  • ester polymer is Ketjenlube 240® sold by the company Italmatch.
  • the lubricating composition according to the invention preferably comprises at least 38%, preferably at least 40%, by weight of hydrogenated polyisobutylene, preferably at least 45% by weight, preferably between 45 and 60%, more preferably between 45 and 55%, relative to the total weight of the lubricating composition.
  • the lubricating composition according to the invention preferably comprises at least 1% by weight of ester polymer, preferably between 1 and 20%, preferably between 2 and 10%, of preferably at least 5%, preferably between 5 and 20%, preferably between 5 and 10%, relative to the total weight of lubricating composition.
  • the lubricating composition according to the invention preferably comprises at least 20% by weight of base oil for food contact, preferably from 20 to 50% by weight, relative to the total weight of the lubricating composition.
  • the lubricating composition according to the invention may comprise additives.
  • the additives can be any additive known in the field of lubrication, in particular in the field of the lubrication of industrial gears.
  • the additives are chosen from additives meeting the food contact criteria, in particular incidental food contact.
  • the preferred additives for the lubricating composition used according to the invention are chosen from anti-wear additives, extreme-pressure additives, viscosity index improvers, anti-corrosion additives, anti-foaming agents, antioxidants , and inorganic friction modifiers and mixtures thereof.
  • the anti-corrosion additives they can be chosen by those skilled in the art according to the metal to be treated.
  • the anti-corrosion agents of the invention can be chosen from anti-corrosion agents for aluminum, steel, galvanized steel, yellow metals (for example copper, brass, preferably copper ), etc., alone or in a mixture.
  • the lubricating composition according to the invention meets the food contact criteria, in particular incidental food contact, as defined above. This allows in particular a use of the lubricating composition according to the invention in the lubrication of mechanical systems in agro-food installations, in particular in the lubrication of industrial gears in the agro-food field.
  • the lubricating composition according to the invention has a pour point according to the ISO 3016 standard, lower than -24°C. This allows in particular use of the lubricating composition according to the invention under conditions of very low temperatures, for example below -22°C.
  • the lubricating composition according to the invention meets the food contact criteria, in particular incidental food contact, as defined above, and a pour point below -24°C.
  • This allows in particular a use of the lubricating composition according to the invention in the lubrication of systems mechanisms in food-processing facilities at low temperature, or even very low temperature, for example in cold rooms, freezers, in particular in the lubrication of industrial gears in food-processing facilities at low temperature, or even very low temperature, for example in cold rooms, freezers.
  • the composition according to the invention has a kinematic viscosity at 40° C., measured according to the ISO 3104 standard, of between 500 and 2000 mm 2 /s.
  • the combination of these high viscosities with a very low pour point advantageously allows use at low temperatures of the lubricating composition according to the invention.
  • the lubricating composition according to the invention has a high kinematic viscosity at 40° C. and a very low pour point, which allows its versatility and its use under very different temperature conditions.

  • the kinematic viscosity at 40°C is measured according to the ISO 3104 standard.
  • the viscosity index is measured according to the ISO 2909 standard.
  • the addition of an ester polymer having a relatively high pour point makes it possible to greatly reduce the final pour point of the lubricating composition and therefore to improve its behavior at low or even very low temperatures.
