Definitions
- the present invention is an evolved form, adapted to the new technologies and completed with new features and improvements, a continuation of the following patented inventions in Romania: 87146/1984; 206980/1993; 126933/2015, deposit for patent no. 129356/2013 and experiments made with this installation on 18 diesel electric locomotives of 2100 HP 1 for freight operation and a locomotive of the same type for passenger operation, in the period 2012-2015.
- the invention refers to an autonomous multipurpose installation which is designed to provide the operation of diesel locomotives at optimal regimen according to the effective needs in terms of energy consumption for each phase of rail transport.
- 5 1 the primary power supply consisting of a set of accumulator batteries with the capacity adapted to the specific needs of each locomotive type. The functioning of this power supply depletes its capacity. It has the main role to start the traction diesel engine.
- the traction diesel engine is an "undepletable" source which ensures both the traction power and the power supplied to all the auxiliary services of the locomotive.
- the energy consumption does not correspond to the use of the locomotive required by the needs of each stage of the transportation process, thus appearing the fuel overconsumption of the traction diesel engine;
- the main source of energy is unevenly exploited in a disproportionate power range from a few kW (lighting, vigilance control device, air conditioning for the driver's cab etc.) to the nominal value of the power for hauling the train;
- Idle running time of the diesel engine exceeds 60% of total running time on freight operation and 40% on passenger operation;
- the technical problem solved by the invention is the optimizing of the energy needs required by each phase of railway transport and thus the reducing of environmental pollution.
- the auxiliary energy source S3 achieves the following:
- the auxiliary energy source (the third power source of the locomotive) of the multipurpose installation for optimize the functioning of the diesel locomotive, according to the invention, consists of an auxiliary power-pack - diesel engine - three phase synchronous generator - sized to provide power to auxiliary services of locomotive in all situations when the locomotive does not develop the traction force, both stationary and in motion hauling a train or running isolated, in operating mode or in the shed mode.
- auxiliaries services air compressor for compressed air for brake and pneumatic command, battery charging, lighting and cab signalling, locomotive controls, air conditioning for driver's cab/Other specific auxiliary services required by the locomotive manufacturer.
- Voltage adapters - rectifiers, converters or inverters - can be used on any type of locomotive.
- the auxiliary energy source (S 3 ) of the multipurpose installation can be used with a power adapter to supply one or two traction electric motors, when the locomotive has to be moved, isolated, on short distances in the depot or in the railway station. Thus it can be avoided the start of the traction diesel engine or the use of another locomotive to haul it. This system is very important when the diesel locomotive is introducing or removed from the maintenance warehouse.
- the auxiliary energy source (S 3 ) of the multipurpose installation can be used with a power adapter also for participation in the starting process of the traction diesel engine together with the battery set or with capacitors.
- the locomotive can be equipped with a battery set of low capacity.
- the multipurpose installation provides power supply for the air compressor at all times and thus produces the compressed air needed for engine start.
- the multipurpose installation is provided with a three- position switch ("OPERATING”, “O”, “SHED”), manually operated, through which it choose the operating mode of the installation as follows:
- a programmable logic controller command the start or stop of the operation of the auxiliary power source during warm maintaining of the diesel engine.
- PLC programmable logic controller
- Maintaining warm the traction diesel engine is provided by an electric or thermal heater supplied by the auxiliary group, and a low-power pump, which ensure the permanent circulation of the coolant through the cooling installation and through the heater.
- the multipurpose installation both in operating and in shed mode is provided with: a system for analyzing and recording on non-volatile memory card, a system for transmission to the ground of the registered parameters, alerts when keeping warm process is not conducted under optimal conditions and with a screen that displays operating parameters of the installation or possible breakdowns.
- Auxiliary energy source (S 3 ), according to the invention, is connected to the fuel installation of the locomotive, to the traction diesel engine cooling system either directly (both motors have the same cooling system) or separately via a heat exchanger. Both solutions have the advantage of simplifying the installation, i.e. auxiliary diesel engine does not need its own cooling system and two engines remain in common in warm condition.
- Auxiliary energy source is connected to the wiring of the locomotive via power adapter that provides the necessary voltage for the auxiliary services.
- the multipurpose installation is also used and when the locomotive is operational and must not develop the traction force and therefore the traction diesel engine functions are taken over, with compliance of rail regulations, in terms of assuring the safety of traffic, of the locomotive and, in particular, that of the train and locomotive staff.
- the cases in which the installation may be used are:
- the multipurpose installation has maximum efficiency for freight and shunting operation and less efficiency in passenger operation. Also the maximum savings are during winter and minimal during summer.
- Fig. 1 Autonomous multipurpose installation for optimize the functioning of diesel locomotive when it is in "OPERATING" mode
- auxiliary group (1) is the independent auxiliary energy source S 3 , three-position switch ("OPERATING", “O” "SHED") (2) through this is selected the operating mode of the installation according to the locomotive activity, a PLC (3) which ensures automatic control, supervision of operation and data recording for the entire multipurpose installation, fuel locomotive installation (4), cooling system (5) of the traction diesel engine (6) either directly or through the heat exchanger (30), battery set (7), voltage adapter (8) through which the locomotive auxiliary services are supplied from the auxiliary group, diagnosis and data recording system (9), ground transmission system for information (10), display for displaying data and failures (1 1).
- auxiliary services supplied from auxiliary group (1 ) are: vigilance and control device (12), driver's cab air conditioning (13), locomotive controls (14), lighting and locomotive signalling (15), other auxiliary services of diesel locomotive (16), the air compressor driven by an electric motor (17) which can be DC or three-phase asynchronous in which case it is powered by the voltage adapter (18) from the terminalsiof the three-phase synchronous generator of the auxiliary group (1).
- auxiliary group (1) can be supplied with electricity one or two electric traction motors (19), via the voltage adapter (20), providing the movement of isolated locomotive on short distances.
- auxiliary group (1) With the help of the auxiliary group (1) by the voltage adapter (28), together with the battery set (7) or capacitors may be carried out the starting of the locomotive traction diesel engine (6).
- the solution reduces the capacity of locomotive storage battery in proportion to the part that is taken by the auxiliary group.
- the auxiliary group (1) ensures feeding air compressor (17) at any time, producing compressed air necessary for engine start-up through the installation (29).
- FIG. 2 The principle of the multipurpose installation for optimize the functioning of diesel locomotive, when the locomotive is in shed mode, according to the invention, is shown in Figure 2 and consists of: auxiliary group (1), three-position switch (2) on "SHED" position, PLC control, diagnostics and records (3), fuel locomotive installation (4), cooling system (5) of the traction diesel engine (6), battery set (7), voltage adapter (8), diagnosis and data recording system (9), ground transmission system for information (10), display for displaying data and failures (1 1), the voltage sensor (21) for voltage at the battery terminals, secondary pump water (22) for circulating coolant in the cooling traction diesel engine installation, coolant temperature sensor (23), electric or thermal heater (24 ) for coolant, voltage adapter (25) for supplying secondary water pump, installation for closing or opening of the interior and exterior shutters mounted in the air duct of the cooling radiator (26), electric power supply and control unit (27) for the heater of the coolant .
- auxiliary group (1) three-position switch (2) on "SHED" position
- PLC control diagnostics and records
- the PLC (3) takes over the monitoring and control system of the multipurpose installation for this functioning condition.
- PLC commands the starting or stopping of the diesel engine of the auxiliary group (1).
- the coolant temperature sensor (23) activates the start when the temperature is equal to the minimum temperature specified by the manufacturer of the traction diesel engine and activates the stop when the temperature increases with about 10° C or other value chosen by the applicant.
- the voltage sensor (2 It) for the ibattery set commands the start of the auxiliary group when the voltage drops by about 3 volts and its stop when the voltage at the batteries terminal is equal to the nominal value.
- the secondary pump water (22) runs constantly and it is feed by the voltage adapter (25) from the battery set (7), ensuring the circulation of coolant through the heater (24) and through the entire cooling system (5) of the traction diesel engine (6). In this way the temperature uniformity is achieved across cooling installation and the formation of cold spots is prevented.
- the electric power supply and control unit (27) provides the necessary voltage for the coolant heater (24), which starts the heating process.
- the temperature sensor (23) via the PLC (3), orders the stopping of the auxiliary group (1).
- the PLC verifies the position of interior and exterior shutters mounted in the air duct of the cooling radiator (26) and orders their closure.
- the PLC (3) controls the opening and closing of interior and exterior shutters mounted in the air duct of the radiators in both operating modes of the locomotive (active, shed). Closure occurs as long as the coolant temperature has smaller value than the minimum optimum for the functioning of the traction diesel engine in order to avoid heat loss from the radiator, thus ensuring the operation of diesel engine thrust to the optimum functioning when consumption of diesel fuel is minimal.
- the interior and exterior shutters mounted in the air duct of the radiators remove much of the heat loss from radiators and provide keeping warm of the locomotive with minimum fuel consumption.
- the three-position switch (2) When the locomotive is in active mode, the three-position switch (2) is set to "OPERATING". The command of start - stop of the auxiliary group (1) of the multipurpose installation is done manually by the locomotive driver. Since it has started the auxiliary group, the PLC (3) controls all the operation process of the entire system except its stop command.
- the multipurpose installation name comes from the fact that it provides the following functions: - supplies all the auxiliary services of the locomotive when it is operating and must not develop the traction force hauling a train or running isolate, without deviating from the rail legislation: air compressor (17), vigilance control device (12), driver's cab air conditioning (13), locomotive controls (14), lighting and locomotive signalling (15), other auxiliary services specific to each type of locomotive (16), battery set (7);
- the air compressor (17) can be supplied at any time by the auxiliary group (1), thus ensuring the necessary air for the starting process;
- the PLC (3) takes the control of the entire system, providing the start and stop of the auxiliary group (1), keeping the traction diesel engine (6) warm and charging the battery set (7), so that the locomotive is ready at any moment to be put-in operation state.
