Im Arbeitseinsatz treibt der Verbrennungsmotor 7 über das Verteilergetriebe 18 beide Motor/Generatoreinheiten 10 mit jeweils 150 KW Nennleistung an. Der Verbrennungsmotor 7 ist mit einem Freilauf (oder Kupplung) 22 ausgestattet, damit die Gleisbaümaschine 1 auch ohne Verbrennungsmotor 7 arbeiten kann. Bei gestartetem Verbrennungsmotor 7 wirken die Generator/Motoreinheiten 10 als Generatoren, die mit 300 kW Ladeleistung den Stromspeicher 20 aufladen und/oder den benötigten Strom für die beiden als Fahrantrieb dienenden Generator/Motoreinheiten 10 im Überstell- bzw. Arbeitsmodus liefern. Außerdem wird eine Aufrechterhaltung des hydraulischen Systemdruckes bei abgestelltem Verbrennungsmotor 7 gewährleistet, indem eine Hydraulikpumpe 8 durch eine Generator/Motoreinheit 10 angetrieben wird.
