Definitions

  • This invention pertains in general to furniture systems.
  • Furniture systems such as shelving systems are often constructed of vertically placed rail members forming a frame and horizontal load receiving members such as shelves, drawers, rails for coat hangers, etc.
  • load receiving members such as shelves, drawers, rails for coat hangers, etc.
  • the load receiving members could simply be screwed to the rails, they could also be glued etc.
  • a relatively large torque can be applied to the load receiving members.
  • a fully extended drawer applies a significant torque to the interface between the drawer guide and the rail. Often this force is such that multiple rails, multiple screws or other complex systems are necessary to avoid damage to this interface.
  • US patent application 2004/155161 discloses a track assembly comprising a bracket to be received in a longitudinal channel in a track. Due to the single channel design of the track the bracket must be slid in to place from either the top or bottom of the bracket.
  • US patent 6,105,794 discloses a similar track assembly comprising a slidable bracket. As with US 2004/155161 single channel design requires that the bracket is slid in to place from an extent of the track.
  • DE 10 2006 010 447 discloses a bracket which can slide on a thin track or rail.
  • WO2014159372 A1 discloses a track assembly comprising a bracket that can be inserted in a rail at an angle to the longitudinal direction of the rail.
  • the present invention preferably seeks to mitigate, alleviate or eliminate one or more of the above-identified deficiencies in the art and disadvantages singly or in any combination and solves at least the above mentioned problems by providing a solution in accordance with the independent claims set forth below.
  • a furniture system comprising a rail, the rail being provided with two or more parallel grooves.
  • the grooves extend in the longitudinal direction of the said rail.
  • the furniture system further comprises an interconnecting plate.
  • a first face of the interconnecting plate is provided with two or more ridges.
  • the grooves of the rail are configured for receiving the ridges when moving towards each other at an angle to the longitudinal direction of said rail (100). This prevents lateral movement of the interconnecting plate relative to the rail once the grooves (101) have received the ridges (201).
  • the grooves may receive the ridges at an angle to the longitudinal direction of said rail, it is possible to mount the interconnecting plate to the rail after the rail has already been mounted to a supporting foundation, e.g. a wall.
  • a supporting foundation e.g. a wall.
  • the grooves receive the ridges upon a relative movement in the longitudinal direction of the rail it is required that the rail is dismounted from the supporting foundation before the ridges are received in the grooves, or that the rail has to be undesirably shortened in order to allow the grooves to receive the ridges after mounting the rail to the supporting foundation.
  • the furniture system further comprises a support member attached to a second face of the interconnecting plate.
  • the support member is further positionable along the rail for fixing a member configured for receiving a load to the rail.
  • the furniture system can be configured such that a torque acting on the support member is transferred via the ridges of the interconnecting plate to each of the walls of the grooves.
  • the rail extends vertically.
  • the furniture system in one aspect, may be a shelving system.
  • the support member is a shelf support.
  • the furniture system comprises a means for securely attaching the interconnecting plate to the rail.
  • the means for securely connecting can comprise a screw.
  • the furniture system comprises an interconnecting plate for connecting a support member to a rail.
  • the interconnecting plate comprises at least two ridges being insertable into at least two corresponding grooves on the rail.
  • the at least two ridges extend parallel to one another.
  • At least one of the ridges has a substantially rectangular cross-section.
  • interconnecting plate has at least one of the ridges having a frusto-trapezoidal cross-section.
  • the interconnecting plate comprises a second face provided with a projection which is insertable in to the support member.
  • the plate is provided with a point for attaching a means for fixing the interconnecting plate to a position on the rail.
  • the furniture system comprises a rail.
  • the rail has at least two longitudinally extending parallel grooves configured to receive at least two ridges provided on an interconnecting plate.
  • the two grooves are disposed on either side of a ridge.
  • the grooves have a substantially rectangular cross-section.
  • the grooves have a substantially frusto-trapezoidal cross-section.
  • the following description of the present invention describes a furniture system having an improved strength and being easy to assemble.
  • Figure 1 illustrates a furniture system comprising a rail 100, wherein the rail is provided with two or more parallel grooves 101; and, an interconnecting plate 200, wherein a first surface of the interconnecting plate is provided with two or more ridges 201 and the grooves are configured for receiving the ridges of the interconnecting plate.
  • the furniture system comprises one or more support members 300, being positionable along the rail, for fixing a member configured to receive a load to the rail.
  • the force distribution of the ridges of the interconnecting plate to the grooves of the rail creates a robust fixing point, especially since any torque applied to the support member 300 will be split between the pairs of grooves/ridges.
  • the furniture system of the current invention allows a support member to be first attached directly on the rail where it is desired that a member to receive a load be positioned. This is as opposed to inserting a support member at one of the ends of the rails and then sliding the support member to its desired position along the rail as is performed in the prior art.
  • Figure 2A shows a cross section of the rail 100 for use in a furniture system.
  • the rail of the furniture system is provided with at least two longitudinally extending parallel grooves 101.
  • the grooves 101 are configured to receive at least two ridges 201 provided on an interconnecting plate 200.
  • the grooves 101 can extend along the entire length of the rail.
  • the grooves 101 can also extend in only a portion of the rail 100.
  • the grooves 101 could be formed in a middle portion of the rail 100 and the ends of the rail 100 might be free from grooves 101.
  • the at least two grooves 101 can be disposed on either side of a ridge 102.
  • the ridge can be formed parallel with the grooves 101.
  • the grooves 101 and, if present, the ridge 102 can be distributed along the plane of the first face 103 of the rail 100.
  • the grooves 101 have a substantially rectangular cross-section, although a slightly tapered cross-section may be preferred for improved alignment of the ridges 201 relative the grooves 101.
  • the contact surface between the grooves 101 and the ridges 201 is increased, as it may be ascertained that the tapered lateral surfaces of the ridges are in full contact with the corresponding tapered surfaces of the grooves 101.
  • the mutual tapering of the ridges 201 and grooves 101 thus allows the interconnecting plate to be able to withstand higher momentum forces acting on the support members 300 when loaded, since a better fit between the ridges 201 and the grooves 101 is achieved in this regard.
  • Each groove can comprise two side walls.
  • the grooves can comprise a first side wall 106 formed substantially perpendicular to the first face 103 of the rail 100.
  • the side wall 106 connects the first face 103 of rail 100 to a central base 107 of the groove.
  • the central base 107 of the groove can be formed parallel with the first face 103 of the rail 100, and a second side wall 108 substantially perpendicular to the first face 103 of the rail 100 and to the central base 107 of the groove, connecting the central base 107 of the groove to the first face 103 of the rail.
  • the groove 101 can, as shown in Figure 2 , be formed with angled walls.
  • the walls 106, 108 of the grooves are not perpendicular with the first face 103 of the rail but are instead angled such that the width of the opening of the groove 104 is greater than the width of the base of the groove 105.
  • the cross-section of the groove in such a case is frusto-trapezoidal. This enables the ridges 101 of the interconnecting plate 200 to be easily positionable in the grooves.
  • the two sides of the frusto-trapezoidal cross-section are at the same angles relative the top surface of the frusto-trapezoidal cross-section. In one embodiment, the two sides of the frusto-trapezoidal cross-section are at different angles relative the top surface of the frusto-trapezoidal cross-section.
  • the rail 100, support member 300 and interconnecting plate 200 are configured such that a torque acting on the support member 300 is transferred via the ridges 201 of the interconnecting plate 200 to each of the walls 106, 108 of the grooves 101.
  • the rail 100 can be provided with a point 109 for attaching a means for fixing the interconnecting plate 200 at a specific position.
  • the point can for example be a hole such that a screw or projection can be inserted in to the hole.
  • the rail 100 is provided with a plurality of holes 109.
  • the plurality of holes 109 can receive a threaded fixing member such a screw or bolt.
  • the point can also comprise pre-inserted members for receiving an attachment means or fixing member.
  • the rail 100 When in use the rail 100 is generally positioned such that it extends vertically.
  • Figure 3 shows an interconnecting plate 200 for connecting a shelf support to a rail 100.
  • the interconnecting plate 200 is substantially plate formed having a first face 202 and an opposing second face 203.
  • the first face 202 of the interconnecting plate comprises at least two ridges 201 being insertable in to at least two grooves 101 on the rail 100.
  • the at least two ridges 201 can be parallel to one another. This enables the ridges to match the parallel grooves 101 of the rail 100.
  • the ridges 201 can extend on the first face 202, from a first edge 209 of the plate to a second opposing edge 210 of the plate 200.
  • the ridges 201 can, as shown in Figure 3 , extend along a third 211 and fourth edge (not shown in Figure 3 ) of the plate.
  • the ridges 201 can be provided at any position and any angle in relation to the edges of the plate provided that they dimensioned to fit within the grooves of the rail 100.
  • Each of the at least two ridges 201 has a substantially rectangular, or slightly frusto-trapezoidal cross-section.
  • a ridge 201 has a first wall 204 arranged substantially perpendicular to a first face 202 of the interconnecting plate 200.
  • the ridge 201 has a second wall 206 arranged substantially perpendicular to the first face of the plate.
  • the first and second walls are connected by a central plateau 205 such that a rectangular cross-section ridge is formed.
  • the ridges 201 of the interconnecting plate 200 can be frusto-trapezoidal.
  • the frusto-trapezoidal ridges enable easier assembly of the interconnecting plate to the rails.
  • the ridges 201 of the interconnecting plate 200 are dimensioned such that they fit within the grooves 101 in the rails 100. A torque acting on the interconnecting plate 200 around an axis extending perpendicular to the surface of the plate will result in force being transferred through the ridges 201 to the walls 106, 108 of the grooves 101.
  • the interconnecting plate 200 is provided with a point for receiving a means for securely attaching to a position on the rail.
  • the interconnecting plate can be provided with a hole 207 such that a fixing member can be used to fix the plate to the rail.
  • a fixing member can be used to fix the plate to the rail.
  • the hole 207 can be countersunk as shown in Figure 3 such that the surface of the interconnecting plate is flat.
  • the second face 203 of the interconnecting plate is provided with at least one projection 208 which is insertable in to the support member.
  • the at least one projection can be provided on the second face 203 of the interconnecting plate 200.
  • the at least one projection enables a force transfer from the support member 300 to interconnecting plate 200.
  • the at least one projection can also define the angle relative to the rail 100 at which the support member 300 is positioned. For example, as shown in figure 1 the support member 300 can be held perpendicular to the rail 100. However, by adjusting the angle of the at least one projection the support member can be held at a non-perpendicular angle relative to the rail as shown in Figure 6 .
  • the support member is shown in Figure 5 .
  • the support member 300 is a supporting member for connecting a load bearing member such as a shelf, a rail for coat hangers, drawers etc. to the interconnecting plate and therein the rail.
  • the support member 300 can be an elongated right-angled bracket.
  • the support member can be provided with at least one opening 301 for receiving the at least one projection 208 from the interconnecting plate 200. If the interconnecting plate has two or more projections 208 the support member 300 can also be provided with two or more openings such that the projections fit within the openings of the support member.
  • the at least one opening 301 on the support member may be dimensioned such that a projection of the interconnecting plate is pressed in to the opening of the support member.
  • the projection holds the interconnecting plate 200 and support member 300 in place through the press-fit between the projection and the opening.
  • the at least one opening may also be dimensioned such that a further attachment means is required to fix the interconnecting plate 200 to the support member 300.
  • the projection may be used to position the support member on the interconnecting plate whilst they are fixed together with a fixing member through a hole 302 as shown in Figure 5 .
  • the support member could also be fixed to the interconnecting plate with any other means of attachment such as with glue, a screw, or any similar means.
  • the at least one projection may have a tapered shape as shown in Figure 4 . Accordingly, the base area of the at least one projection may be larger than the top area of the same. It is advantageous to provide the opening 301 to which the at least one projection 208 is to be connected in a corresponding tapered shape thereby enabling an increased contact surface therebetween.
  • the respective tapered shapes of the opening 301 and the at least one projection 208 allows for less play and improved resistance in withstanding momentum forces, e.g. when the support member 300 is loaded.
  • the openings can be longitudinal slots having a longitudinal axis perpendicular to the axis of elongation of the support member.
  • the at least one opening 301 can define the angle at which the support member 300 is held relative to the rail 100.
  • the openings can for example be provided such that the longitudinal axis of the slot is offset by less than 90 degrees from perpendicular to the axis of the elongation of the support member. In use this implies that the support member would be held at an angle between 0 and 90 degrees from horizontal.
  • the support member and interconnecting plate are monolithic. That is, they are formed as a single piece.
  • a monolithic interconnecting plate and support member assembly negates the need for projections in the interconnecting plate and openings in the support member.
  • the support member could also comprise an integrated load receiving member such that the support member is a combined support member and load receiving member.
  • the support member could be combined with a shelf member such that combined shelf and support is formed.
  • the furniture system can be a shelving system.
  • a shelving system can comprise a load receiving member which is a shelf. If the furniture system is a shelving system the support members are shelf supports.
  • the shelving system can comprise a pair of rails.
  • a first rail is positioned, a second rail is positioned such that the grooves of the first rail are aligned , parallel and facing the grooves of the second rail.
  • a first support member can be position on the first rail, a second shelf support can thereafter be positioned on the second rail.
  • Both shelf supports are connected to the rails via interconnecting plates.
  • a drawer cabinet may comprise a guide rail, a support member for supporting the drawer extension and an interconnecting plate for connecting the supporting member to the rail.
