Abstract

The present invention relates to an assembly (1) of a hood (2) and a wall-mounted cabinet (3) comprising a motorized hood (2) having a housing frame (4); a wall-mounted kitchen cabinet (3) which extends in a preset vertical direction of extension (Y-Y) and has at least two side walls (11, 12) and a rear wall (13) to define a volume (V), said side walls (11, 12) and rear wall (13) extending parallel to said preset vertical direction of extension (Y-Y), said side walls (11, 12) being mutually opposed; said motorized hood (2) being housed in said volume (V) of said wall-mounted cabinet (3). The assembly (1) is characterized in that it comprises a pair of support elements (20, 21); fastener means (22) for fastening each support element to a respective side wall (11, 12) of said wall-mounted cabinet (3) to rigidly join it to its respective side wall (11, 12); wherein each support element (20, 21) comprises first and second engagement means (23, 24) for engaging with said housing frame (4); wherein said first engagement means (23) jut out of each support element (20, 21) toward the opposite side wall (11, 12), to define an axis of rotation (X-X) during a step of introduction/removal of said hood (2) into and from said volume (V) of said wall-mounted cabinet (3); wherein said second engagement means (24) are configured to move from a first operating configuration in which said hood (2) is stably connected to said pair of support elements (20, 21) to a second operating configuration in which said hood (2) is free to rotate about said axis of rotation (X-X).

Description

    Technical field
  • The present invention relates to an assembly of a hood and a wall-mounted cabinet as defined in the preamble of claim 1.
  • Particularly, but without limitation, the present invention relates to an assembly of a motorized extractor or filter hood for domestic use and a wall-mounted modular kitchen cabinet incorporating such hood.
  • Background of the invention
  • Built-in motorized extractor or filter hoods are known in the art, i.e. hoods designed to be accommodated in a wall-mounted cabinet of a kitchen.
  • In this type of installation, the hood may be completely hidden from view of a user until he/she needs to operate the hood, after opening a door that is part of the cabinet.
  • Installation of such hood usually requires to hood to be connected, for instance, by screws and/or bolts, to the side walls of the cabinet and/or the bottom wall of the cabinet.
  • For this purpose, the frame of the hood has appropriate slots or seats for receiving the screws which engage, for instance, in the side walls of the cabinet.
  • Particularly, installation of the hood in the cabinet requires the presence of at least two persons at the same time, i.e. one for supporting the hood and the other for simultaneously fastening it, for instance, to the side walls of the cabinet.
  • This is an apparent hindrance whenever the user wants to install the hood by him/herself, i.e. without the help of other people, or whenever installation is carried out by specialized companies/professionals.
  • Namely, in the latter case, the need for a greater number of persons to install the hood in the cabinet necessarily involves higher costs for the final user.
  • A further problem of a cabinet with an integrated hood is that the front door will have to pivot upwards instead of rotating sideways. This is because a hood that utilizes the entire depth of the cabinet's compartment to provide the largest extraction surface cannot be installed using classic hinges that cause the front panel to rotate about a vertical axis (or cause a rototranslational movement thereof), but using hinges that allow the front panel to rotate about a horizontal axis, thereby opening the front panel upwards. The hinges that allow upward movement of the front panel are obviously more complex than classic hinges, because, in addition to ensuring an upward pivotal movement, they must be also designed to support the weight of the front panel and to indefinitely maintain an open position. In order to ensure these characteristics, such hinges may also comprise pistons and/or complex mechanical joints, and are considerably more expensive than the classic hinges that are used in the wall-mounted cabinets of modular kitchens.
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • Therefore, the technical purpose of the present invention is to provide an assembly of a hood and a wall-mounted cabinet that can obviate the above mentioned prior art drawbacks.
  • Particularly, an object of the present invention is to provide an assembly of a hood and a wall-mounted cabinet that can afford installation of the hood in the cabinet's compartment by a single user.
  • A further object of the present invention is to use the classic hinges for rotation (or rototranslation) instead of the hinges with pistons or complex mechanical joints.
  • The aforementioned technical purpose and objects are substantially fulfilled by an assembly of a hood and a wall-mounted cabinet that comprises the technical features as disclosed in one or more of the accompanying claims.
  • Advantages
  • Particularly, with the assembly of a hood and a wall-mounted cabinet according to the present invention, a hood may be more easily installed and removed into and out of a cabinet, without requiring the presence of two operators.
  • Furthermore, the assembly of a hood and a wall-mounted cabinet according to the present invention can maintain the classic hinges of kitchen cabinets while using a hood that utilizes the entire depth of the cabinet.

    DETAILED DESCRIPTION
  • Even when this is not expressly stated, the individual features as described with reference to the particular embodiments shall be intended as auxiliary to and/or interchangeable with other features described with reference to other exemplary embodiments.
  • Referring to the accompanying figures, numeral 1 designates an assembly of a hood 2 and a wall-mounted cabinet 3, preferably a motorized extractor or filter hood 2 and a wall-mounted modular kitchen cabinet 3.
  • The hood 2 in the annexed figures is, for instance, a hood that is typically known as an inverted T-shaped hood. Reference will be made hereinafter to such particular hood shape, without limiting the assembly of the hood 2 and the cabinet 3 to such inverted T-shaped hood.
  • The hood 2 comprises a housing frame 4, preferably made of metal and possibly having decorative parts. As used herein, the term housing frame is intended to designate a structural element designed to contain hood operating devices, comprising specially shaped elements and/or covering panels that impart a particular aesthetic appearance to the hood.
  • The housing frame 2, also referring to Figure 2, comprises a top wall 5, from which a chimney 6 for venting flue gases extends, a bottom 7 opposed to the top wall 5, through which flue gases produced when cooking food are extracted, two mutually opposed side walls 8, 9 which laterally connect the top wall 5 and the bottom 7, and a front wall 10 which frontally connects the top wall 5 and the bottom 7.
  • The wall-mounted kitchen cabinet 3 extends in a preset vertical direction of extension Y-Y and has at least two side walls 11, 12 and a rear wall 13 to define a volume V. These side walls 11, 12 and rear wall 13 extend parallel to the preset vertical direction of extension Y-Y. Particularly, the side walls 11, 12 are mutually opposed or face each other.
  • The housing frame 4 is designed to be secured to the side walls 11, 12 in an area located above a cooktop having one or more burners (not shown).
  • In this respect, the terms "vertical direction" or "transverse direction" relate to an installed configuration of the hood 2, therefore the vertical direction is intended as a direction substantially perpendicular to the cooktop, and the transverse direction is intended as a direction that forms an angle with a vertical plane.
  • In one aspect, the chimney 6 for venting flue gases extends in a vertical direction, which is parallel to the preset vertical direction of extension Y-Y.
  • The cabinet 3, also referring to Figure 2, further comprises a front wall 14 that has the purpose of hiding the motorized hood 2 from view of a user, when the hood is not in use and allowing access thereto when it has to be operated.
  • For this purpose, the cabinet 3 comprises a hinge 15 that allows the front panel 14 to move between a configuration in which the hood is hidden from view and a configuration in which the hood 2 can be accessed by the user.
  • In one aspect, the hinge 15 comprises:
    • a fixed portion 16, connected to a side wall 11 (or 12),
    • a movable portion 17 connected to the front panel 14 and
    • articulation means (18), operable on said fixed 16 and movable 17 to rotatably associate said front panel 14 with the side wall 11 (or 12).
  • The hinge 15 and its operation are known and will not be described herein.
  • While the figures show a front panel 14 rotatably associated with the side panel 11, it shall be understood that it may be rotatably associated with the other side panel 12.
  • Still referring to Figure 2, it will be appreciated that the panel 3 comprises a top panel 18 which is connected to the other panels 11, 12 and 13, This top panel 18 can delimit the volume V of the cabinet at its top.
  • It shall be noted that the side walls 11, 12 of the cabinet 3 comprise a plurality of holes 19 that, with the help of appropriate bolts or pins or screws (not shown) allow the top panel 18 to be placed at various heights, such that the volume V of the cabinet 3 can be adjusted.
  • Such plurality of holes 19 is formed by the manufacturer with the same number, shape, depth and arrangement in all vertical panels of the modular kitchen, to standardize production, reduce the number of parts and facilitate assembly of the cabinet by the user.
  • For example, the fixed portion 16 of the hinge 15 uses some of the holes of the plurality of holes 19 to be associated with the vertical panel 11 (or 12).
  • In one aspect, also referring to Figure 4, the assembly 1 of the hood 2 and the wall-mounted cabinet 3 comprises:
    • a pair of support elements 20, 21;
    • fastener means 22 for fastening each support element 20, 21 to a respective side wall 11, 12 of the wall-mounted cabinet 3 to rigidly join it to its respective side wall 11, 12.
  • In the embodiment of the figure, each support element 20, 21 has a plurality of fastener means 22 (e.g. three, as shown in Figure 4) to connect the support element to its side wall 11, 12. For example, the fastener means 22 consist of screws or bolts, which are designed to penetrate the thickness of the material that forms the side wall 11, 12, to thereby rigidly join the support element 20, 21 to the wall.
  • In one aspect, still referring to Figure 4, each support element 20, 21 comprises first engagement means 23 and second engagement means 24 for engagement with the housing frame 4 of the hood 2.
  • Particularly, also referring to Figures 4 and 5, in a peculiar aspect of the present disclosure, the assembly 1 of the hood 2 and the wall-mounted cabinet 3 has;
    • the first engagement means 23 jut out of each support element 20, 21 toward the opposite side wall 11 or 12, to define an axis of rotation X-X during a step of introduction/removal of the hood 2 into and out of the volume V of the wall-mounted cabinet 3;
    • the second engagement means 24 are configured to move from a first operating configuration (or state) in which the hood 2 is stably connected to the pair of support elements 20, 21 (Figure 1 or 8) to a second operating configuration in which the hood 2 is free to rotate about such axis of rotation X-X (Figure 6).
  • Particularly, the first engagement means 23, also referring to Figure 5, jut out to a length "T" in a direction of extension that is perpendicular to the vertical direction of extension Y-Y so that the axis of rotation X-X will lie on a plane that is perpendicular to the vertical direction of extension Y-Y.
  • In other words, the first engagement means 23 are located on their respective elements of the support elements 20, 21, in such a position as to be at the same height as the vertical walls 11, 12 of the cabinet 3. By this arrangement, the hood 2 will rotate about the axis X-X, as the latter is perpendicular to the vertical direction of extension Y-Y.
  • In one aspect, also referring to Figure 4, each support element 20, 21, once it is connected by the fastener means 22 to its respective side wall 11 or 12, extends from the rear wall 13 of the wall-mounted cabinet 3 in a direction of extension Z-Z that is perpendicular to the preset vertical direction of extension Y-Y.
  • Preferably, each support element 20, 21 extends from the top (or exposed) surface of the rear wall 13 of the cabinet 3 and, in the embodiments of the figures, ends proximate to the free end of the vertical walls 11 or 12 of the cabinet.
  • Alternatively, each support element 20, 21 might end before the free end of the side walls 11 or 12 of the cabinet.
  • In one embodiment, also referring to Figures 3 and 4, each support element 20, 21 has a box shape defining a top wall 25 and an opposite, parallel bottom wall 26 connected together by a side wall 27, opposite to the respective side wall 11 (or 12) of the wall-mounted cabinet with which the support element 20, 21 is connected and by a front wall 28.
  • The box element 20, 21 defines a volume V' between the respective side wall 11 (or 12) of the wall-mounted cabinet 3 and the side wall 27 of the support element.
  • It shall be noted that the side wall 27 is the side wall that is more inside the volume V relative to the side wall 11 or 12 of the cabinet 3.
  • In one aspect, each support element 20, 21 comprises a rear wall 29 which, also referring to Figure 5, in the preferred embodiment of the assembly 1, is located proximate to or in contact with the rear wall 13 of the cabinet 3.
  • It shall be noted that each support element 20, 21 is formed with a plastic material of given thickness, and with appropriate reinforcement ribs defined in the volume V' to support the mass of the hood 2, once the latter is connected to the support elements 20, 21.
  • It shall be further noted that, for safety purposes, in addition to the aforementioned first and second engagement means 23, 24, appropriate mechanical constraints (such as screws, not shown) may be provided, which preferably engage each support element 20, 21 to the housing frame 4 of the hood 2.
  • In one aspect, also referring to Figures 3 and 4, in a preferred embodiment of the assembly 1, the first and second engagement means 23, 24 are placed on the side wall 27 of each support element 20, 21.
  • In order to allow engagement of the first and second engagement means 23, 24 with the housing frame 4 of the hood 2, such housing frame 4 is designed to comprise first seats 30 (Figure 5), formed with such shape as to be coupled with the first engagement means 23 and second seats 31 (Figure 2) formed with such shape as to be coupled with the second engagement means 24.
  • Particularly, in order to ensure that the hood 2 will be rotated about the axis X-X during installation of the hood in the volume V of the cabinet 3, referring to Figure 5, in the preferred embodiment, the first seats 30 and the first engagement means 23 are located proximate to the rear wall 13 of the cabinet 3.
  • Namely, in order to ensure the first operating configuration of the hood 2, i.e. stable connection of the hood to the pair of support elements, referring to Figure 2, the second seats 31 and the second engagement means 24 are placed in a distal position relative to such first seats 30 and/or the first engagement means 23. Preferably, the second seats 31 and the second engagement means 24 are located proximate to the front panel 11 of the cabinet 3.
  • In one aspect, the first and second seats 30, 31, which are designed to receive the first and second engagement means 23, 24 are located in each side wall 8, 9 of the housing frame 4 of the hood 2.
  • In a preferred embodiment:
    • the first engagement means 23 are formed as a cylindrical pin and the seat 23 for such first engagement means 23 is specially formed with a semicircular shape to create a form-fit with such cylindrical pin;
    • the second engagement means 24, also with reference to Figure 3, comprise an elastic material formed as a sheet (i.e. the lateral wall 27 of the support element 20, 21 is suitably cut out to form the sheet, with a portion formed of one piece with the lateral wall 27 and the other end freely bent) having a pawl 24' and a boss 24", adapted for engagement by a finger of a user, whose pressure allows disengagement of the pawl 24' from the seat 31, resulting in a transition from the first operating position to the second operating position; the seat 31 consists of a notch, e.g. having a quadrangular shape, for abutment of the pawl 24'.
  • Particularly, also referring to Figure 7, once the hood 2 is within the volume V of the cabinet 3, it will be appreciated that the boss 24" extends beyond the top wall 5 of the hood 2; thus, the boss 24" may be actuated by the user by application of an appropriate pressure thereon to switch from the first operating configuration, i.e. a stable state, connected to the side walls 11, 12 of the cabinet 3, to the second operating configuration, i.e. a state in which the hood 22 may be rotated about the axis X-X to be removed or inserted out of and into the volume V of the cabinet.
  • It will be appreciated that, advantageously, the transition from the state in which the hood 22 may be rotated about the axis X-X to be introduced into the volume V of the cabinet to the state in which it is stable and connected to the side walls 11, 12 of the cabinet 3 may be also obtained by the action of a single user.
  • The user shall simply engage the first engagement means 23 (i.e. the pin) with the seat 30 of the housing frame 4 and, once they are engaged, the hood 2 may be rotated upwards about the axis X-X, as shown by arrow S in Figure 6.
  • Once the hood 2 is rotated by the user, the second engagement means 24 will elastically deform to engage, particularly by their pawl 23', the seat 31 of the housing frame 4.
  • It will be appreciated that the side walls 8, 9 of the hood 2 are appropriately formed to create a form-fit with the respective side and bottom walls of the support elements 20, 21, as well shown in Figure 2.
  • These specific conformations of the side 27 and bottom 26 walls of the support elements 20, 21 provide an adequate support surface for the hood 2, and avoid undesired vibration during operation thereof.
  • Particularly, as shown in this Figure 2, the side wall 8, 9 of the hood 2 has a series of stepped bands, and the side 27 and bottom 26 walls of the support elements 20, 21 have matingly shaped stepped bands conforming those of the side walls 8, 9.
  • As shown in the accompanying figures, the fixed portion 16 of the hinge 15 is at least partially received in the volume V' of the support element 20 (or 21).
  • This arrangement can advantageously maintain the classic position of the hinge 15, and avoids the use of a hood with a smaller extraction surface and/or the use of an upwardly pivoting front panel of the cabinet, which would require more complex and expensive hinges as compared to those as shown in the accompanying figures.
  • It shall be noted that, in the embodiment as shown in the accompanying figures, one support element, e.g. the one referenced 20, receives the fixed portion 16 of the hinge 15 in its volume V', and the other, i.e. the one referenced 21, has a closing cap 32 (Figure 2).
  • Nevertheless, if the front panel 1 of the cabinet 3 is a double-door panel, then the other support element 21 will receive the corresponding fixed portion of the hinge.
  • Obviously, if the front panel 14 of the cabinet 3 is designed to be opened rightwards (as viewed by a user standing before the assembly 1) instead of being opened leftwards (still as viewed by the user standing before the assembly 1), then the support element 21 would be ready to receive the fixed portion 16 of the hinge 15 in its volume V'.
  • Advantageously, in order to ensure maintenance and/or adjustment of the fixed portion 16 of the hinge 15, e.g. to adjust the distance of the front panel 14 of the cabinet 3 relative to the vertical panel 11, the support element 20, also referring to Figure 6, comprises a first window 33 in the side wall 27, through which the fixed portion 16 of the hinge 15 may be accessed by the user.
  • The fixed portion 16 is known to house an adjustment dowel, through which the movable portion 17 of the hinge 15 may be moved away or closer to the fixed portion 16.
  • In order to receive the fixed portion 16 of the hinge 15 in the volume V' of the support element 20, such support element 20 comprises a second window 34 within the front surface 28 of the support element. Particularly, the second window 34 has an arc shape, so that the fixed portion 16 of the hinge 15 may have the support element 20 lying astride or wrapped around it during installation of the support elements 20, 21, as shown in Figure 4.
  • Advantageously, in order to afford maintenance and/or adjustment of the fixed portion 16 of the hinge 15 without having to move the hood 2 from the first operating state (Figure 1) to the second operating state (Figure 6) by pressing the boss 24", the hood 2, also referring to Figure 7, is designed to have a slit 35 formed in the top wall 5 of the hood.
  • Particularly, the slit 35 at least partially extends between the two side walls 8, 9 of the hood 2 in a direction of extension X'-X' perpendicular to the preset vertical direction of extension Y-Y.
  • In the preferred embodiment, the slit 35 extends all along the distance between the two side walls 8, 9 of the hood 2.
  • In one aspect, in order to carry out the aforementioned operations, the slit 35 is designed to face the first window 33 in the side surface 27 of each support element 20, 21.
  • It shall be noted that these adjustment and/or maintenance operations are usually carried out using suitable tools, such as a screw driver. Therefore, the slit 35 must be formed in such a manner as to be able to receive such tools, i.e. with sufficient depth and width to receive and move such tools.
  • In the embodiment as shown in the figures, the slit 35 has an inverted U profile.
  • Referring now to Figure 8, it shall be noted that a cover panel 36 is provided to prevent dust or food residues from building up in the slit 35, and has a pair of lips designed to mate with the edge of the slit 35.
  • Those skilled in the art will obviously appreciate that a number of changes and variants may be made to the arrangements as described hereinbefore to meet incidental and specific needs. All of these variants and changes fall within scope of the invention, as defined in the following claims.

Claims (10)

  1. An assembly (1) of a motorized hood (2) and a wall-mounted cabinet (3) comprising:
    - a motorized hood (2) having a housing frame (4);
    - a wall-mounted kitchen cabinet (3) which extends in a preset vertical direction of extension (Y-Y) and has at least two side walls (11, 12) and a rear wall (13) to define a volume (V), said side walls (11, 12) and rear wall (13) extending parallel to said preset vertical direction of extension (Y-Y), said side walls (11, 12) being mutually opposed;
    - said motorized hood (2) being housed in said volume (V) of said wall-mounted cabinet (3);
    said assembly (1) being characterized in that it comprises:
    - a pair of support elements (20, 21);
    - fastener means (22) for fastening each support element to a respective side wall (11, 12) of said wall-mounted cabinet (3) to rigidly join it to its respective side wall (11, 12);
    - wherein each support element (20, 21) comprises first and second engagement means (23, 24) for engaging with said housing frame (4);
    - wherein said first engagement means (23) jut out of each support element (20, 21) toward the opposite side wall (11, 12), to define an axis of rotation (X-X) during a step of introduction/removal of said hood (2) into and from said volume (V) of said wall-mounted cabinet (3);
    - wherein said second engagement means (24) are configured to move from a first operating configuration in which said hood (2) is stably connected to said pair of support elements (20, 21) to a second operating configuration in which said hood (2) is free to rotate about said axis of rotation (X-X).
  2. A motorized hood and wall-mounted cabinet assembly as claimed in claim 1, wherein said first engagement means (23) jut out to a length (T) in a direction of extension (X-X) that is perpendicular to said vertical direction of extension (Y-Y) so that said axis of rotation (X-X) will lie on a plane that is perpendicular to said vertical direction of extension (Y-Y).
  3. A motorized hood and wall-mounted cabinet assembly as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein each support element (20, 21) extends from said rear wall (13) of said wall mounted cabinet (3) in a direction (Z-Z) that is perpendicular to said preset vertical direction of extension (Y-Y).
  4. A motorized hood and wall-mounted cabinet assembly as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein each support element (20, 21) has a box shape defining a top wall (25) and an opposite, parallel bottom wall (26) connected together by a side wall (27), opposite to the respective side wall of the wall-mounted cabinet with which the support element is connected and by a front wall (28), to thereby define a volume (V') between said side wall of said wall-mounted cabinet (11, 12) and said side wall (27) of said support element (20, 21), said first and second engagement means (23, 24) being disposed on said side wall (27) of said support element (20, 21).
  5. A motorized hood and wall-mounted cabinet assembly as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein said housing frame (4) comprises first seats (30) shaped to be coupled with said first engagement means (23) and second seats (31) shaped to be coupled with said second engagement means (24), said first seats (30) and said first engagement means (23) being disposed proximate to said rear wall (13) of said wall-mounted cabinet (3), said second seats (31) and said second engagement means (24) being disposed in a position distal from said first seats (30) and/or said first engagement means (23).
  6. A motorized hood and wall-mounted cabinet assembly as claimed in claim 5, wherein said housing frame (4) comprises a top wall (5), from which a chimney (6) for venting flue gases extends, a bottom (7) opposed thereto, through which flue gases produced when cooking food are extracted, two mutually opposed side walls (8, 9) which laterally connect said top wall (5) and said bottom (7) and a front wall (10) which frontally connects said top wall (5) and said bottom (7), said first and second seats (30, 31) configured to receive said first and second engagement means (23, 24) being provided in each side wall (8, 9) of said hood (2).
  7. A motorized hood and wall-mounted cabinet assembly as claimed in any of the preceding claims, wherein:
    - said first engagement means (23) are shaped as a cylindrical pin and said first seat (30) is specially shaped to create a form-fit with such cylindrical pin,
    - said second engagement means (24) comprise an elastic material shaped as a sheet to move from said first operating position to said second operating position and vice versa.
  8. A motorized hood and wall-mounted cabinet assembly as claimed in any of the preceding claims 4 to 7, wherein each support element (20, 21) extends from said rear wall (13) of said wall-mounted cabinet (3) to an area proximate to a free end of said side wall (11, 12) of said wall-mounted cabinet (3), said wall-mounted cabinet (3) comprising a hinge (15) and a front panel (14), said hinge (15) having a fixed portion (16), connected to the side wall (11, 12) of the wall-mounted cabinet (3) and a movable portion (17) connected to said front panel (14) of said wall-mounted cabinet (3) and articulation means (18), operable on said fixed (16) and movable (17) portions of said hinge (15) to rotatably associate said front panel (14) with a side wall (11, 12) of said wall-mounted cabinet (3), said fixed portion (16) of said hinge (15) being at least partially received within said volume (V') of said support element (20, 21).
  9. A motorized hood and wall-mounted cabinet assembly as claimed in claim 8, wherein at least one of said support elements (20, 21), proximate to said fixed portion (16) of said hinge (15), comprises:
    - a first window (33) situated proximate to said side wall (11, 12) of said wall-mounted cabinet (3) through which said fixed portion (16) of said hinge (15) can be accessed and
    - a second window (34) situated in said front surface (28) of said support element (20, 21) proximate to said fixed portion (16) of said hinge (15).
  10. A motorized hood and wall-mounted cabinet assembly as claimed in claims 6 and 9, wherein said motorized hood (2) comprises a slit (35) formed in said top wall (5), said slit (35) extending at least partially between said two side walls (8, 9) of said hood (2) and facing said first window (33) of said side surface (27) of each support element (20, 21).
