Definitions
- the present invention relates to an image display device capable of retrieving secondary non-direct information in the form of locational information in a broadcast program to be delivered to the users.
- Digital and interactive TV systems provide a comprehensive amount of TV channels and programs leading to the general outcome that although a vast number of programs can be presented, user-interaction is limited in the sense that only the program content being directly visible and/or audible serves as a direct source of information and no secondary or auxiliary information relevant to the context of the directly displayed content can be retrieved and delivered to the users.
- a TV service may have hundreds of channels, there might be many occasions where a user is interested in obtaining a piece of information relevant to the directly presented context of the program being viewed but since no such opportunity is available, he is only able to use alternative methods and means for obtaining the information of interest.
- individual program contents can be processed in order for obtaining secondary or auxiliary information not directly presented in the program being viewed and such secondary or auxiliary information can be offered to the users.
- US2014253804 defines an image processing device including an image insertion unit that inserts into video content an image for recognition identified by image recognition.
- the image insertion unit inserts the image for recognition so that a display duration of the image for recognition is less than a value near a threshold of visual perception.
- US2005141762 discloses a method for adjusting image acquisition parameters to optimize object extraction, which is applied to an object characterized by forming a specific cluster in a colour coordinate space after performing a coordinate projection, and thus the specific cluster contributes to a specific color model, such as a human skin colour model.
- This method first locates a target object within a search window in a selected image. Then applies the specific color model to obtain the image acquisition parameter(s) according to the color distribution and features of the target object. Therefore, the image is transformed according to the adjusted image acquisition parameter(s). Consequently, a complete and clear target object is extracted from the transformed image by applying the specific colour model, and the follow-up images having the same image acquisition conditions with the aforesaid image is also transformed according to the same image acquisition parameter(s).
- the present invention provides a system and a method by which an image display device is operated such that users are automatically offered secondary or auxiliary locational information in relation with an object in a broadcast program being viewed.
- the present invention therefore provides a system and method by which an image display device is operable to automatically provide secondary or auxiliary locational information relevant to the context of the directly displayed content to be retrieved and delivered to the users as provided by the characterizing features defined in Claim 1.
- Primary object of the present invention is to provide a system and method by which an image display device automatically delivers secondary or auxiliary locational information relevant to the context of the directly displayed content being viewed.
- the present invention proposes a system and method for operating an image display device by which a visual object spotted in a program content being actually viewed is definable to obtain locational information in association therewith.
- a visual object is defined by way of analysing frames of the broadcast program such that a specific visual object is detected by a digital image processor of the image display device.
- the visual object can be defined by way of connecting to a remote information resource containing a database of visual objects as well as associated locational information. Therefore, locational information in relation with a specific object in the program content being viewed is retrievable. The locational information is then presented to the users in the form of GPS coordinates in the manner to be processed by a portable terminal.

Abstract
Description
- The present invention relates to an image display device capable of retrieving secondary non-direct information in the form of locational information in a broadcast program to be delivered to the users.
- Digital and interactive TV systems provide a comprehensive amount of TV channels and programs leading to the general outcome that although a vast number of programs can be presented, user-interaction is limited in the sense that only the program content being directly visible and/or audible serves as a direct source of information and no secondary or auxiliary information relevant to the context of the directly displayed content can be retrieved and delivered to the users. Assuming that a TV service may have hundreds of channels, there might be many occasions where a user is interested in obtaining a piece of information relevant to the directly presented context of the program being viewed but since no such opportunity is available, he is only able to use alternative methods and means for obtaining the information of interest.
- Accordingly, individual program contents can be processed in order for obtaining secondary or auxiliary information not directly presented in the program being viewed and such secondary or auxiliary information can be offered to the users.
- Among others, one of the prior art disclosures in the technical field of the present invention can be referred to as US2014253804, which defines an image processing device including an image insertion unit that inserts into video content an image for recognition identified by image recognition. The image insertion unit inserts the image for recognition so that a display duration of the image for recognition is less than a value near a threshold of visual perception.
- Further, US2005141762 discloses a method for adjusting image acquisition parameters to optimize object extraction, which is applied to an object characterized by forming a specific cluster in a colour coordinate space after performing a coordinate projection, and thus the specific cluster contributes to a specific color model, such as a human skin colour model. This method first locates a target object within a search window in a selected image.
- Other prior art references disclosing object extraction techniques can be referred to as US5264946 and US20100183230.
Alternatively, the visual object can be defined by way of connecting to a remote information resource containing a database of visual objects as well as associated locational information. Therefore, locational information in relation with a specific object in the program content being viewed is retrievable. The locational information is then presented to the users in the form of GPS coordinates in the manner to be processed by a portable terminal.
- Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a system and method by which an image display device is operable, whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained in brief hereinafter.
- The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the claims nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in said claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.
- Fig. 1 demonstrates a general diagram according to which the image display device of the invention executes the method of operation according to the present invention.
- The present invention proposes an image display device enabling a user to reach relevant information content according to his personal preferences. More particularly, the present invention provides that an image display device automatically retrieves a certain piece of information in association with the program content being actually viewed, such piece of information, on the other hand, being not directly obtainable from the program content itself. Program contents within the technical context of the present invention may be defined as any sort of programs in different categories as well as commercial streams presented during a program broadcast or inserted between two programs as provided by the broadcaster. The present invention therefore provides a system and method for technically associating a program content being viewed with secondary or auxiliary information not directly provided by the program content itself. More specifically, the present invention provides a system and method for obtaining and providing locational information non-directly available in the program content to the users.
- Although a significant amount of data in the form of metadata information containing a multitude of attribute names, types and parameter descriptions is received by way of using the electronic program guide, the secondary or auxiliary information in the form of locational information is not directly receivable from the broadcaster.
- In a more specific manner, a documentary program on the architecture of a city in a certain geographic region of a country may visually present important monuments in the city. The accompanied oral information in the form of secondary or auxiliary information may not directly include locational information of the monument, which might be of interest to the users. Therefore, the locational information of the monument including GPS coordinates thereof and a possible driving route from a starting point such as the actual location of the user to the destination, is automatically presented to the user in accordance with the present invention. Apart from touristic places such as Eiffel tower, the Big Ben or Galata tower, other places of interest may be restaurants, theatres, clubs and so on, whose names appear on the screen.
- The image display device in accordance with the present invention is configured to obtain the locational information by analysing frames of a broadcast program to catch a visual pattern/text indicative of a specific object by means of a digital image processor. A visual pattern indicative of an object, for example in the form of a specific figure or shape may be detected as a specific object by analysing consecutive frames of the broadcast program.
- Preferably, not the image display device itself but a remote server undertakes the image processing task. The image display device performs a feature extraction process to obtain metadata information in association with frames, which is then processed by the remote server. Such image processing techniques and especially the feature extraction process are presently used on an extensive basis and readily available to the skilled worker. Some of the techniques are demonstrated by the prior art references indicated in the background section of the present invention.
- The remote server therefore spots a visual object in the broadcast program and matches the same with a specific object in a pre-loaded internal database and the auxiliary information as to the specific location of the spotted object is provided to the users by the image display device. Therefore, the digital image processor in association with the remote server determines a particular object, the locational information in relation with which is retrieved in an internal database and conveyed back to the image display device.
- The image display device may present the retrieved locational information in the form of a machine readable code, such as barcode, two-dimensional or matrix code as in the case of Quick Response (QR) codes, containing GPS coordinates of the interested location.
- The machine readable codes may be discontinuously displayed on the TV screen in a non-intrusive manner, i.e. interfering with the actual program content in a minimal level. The machine readable code will be displayed on the screen in a manner to be overlaid on an actual program so as to be replaced periodically as long as necessary, i.e. at times when new locational information is available. The machine readable codes can be conventionally scanned by a portable terminal such as a smartphone, tablet computer or GPS navigation unit.
- In accordance with the present invention, it is to be noted that no information is conveyed back to a third party such as the broadcaster, regarding in which way the auxiliary information is used. The image display device undertakes the processing itself, i.e. it receives or collects the required information and presents the secondary or auxiliary information upon confirmation.
- According to the present invention, in an alternative manner, the auxiliary information retrieving function can be launched by the users anytime by selecting the corresponding menu option or pressing a corresponding button so as to access the resource. To this end, the image display device of the invention may operate in a so-called non-automatic mode in which case the auxiliary information retrieving function will be launched only in response to the calling of an auxiliary information retrieving function by means of a button being actuatable on the TV front panel or by means of a remote control.
- The auxiliary information may directly be displayed on the screen, i.e. in the form of a machine readable code containing the information. Alternatively, the auxiliary information can be sent to a specified e-mail address of an authorized user.
- In summary, the present invention proposes an image display device receiving a plurality of broadcasting services and comprising a control unit effecting operation of said image display device. Said control unit is configured to automatically define visual objects in association with a program content being viewed. The control unit is further configured to access a visual object database containing locational information in association with a defined visual object. The image display device is configured to present the locational information retrieved from said visual object database in the form of an on-screen machine readable code overlaid on an actual program content or to remotely communicate the locational information as a digital message.
- In a further embodiment of the present invention, said control unit is configured to define visual objects in a program content by connecting to a remote server capable of digitally processing frames of a broadcast program so as to spot specific visual objects.
- In a further embodiment of the present invention, said control unit is configured to perform a feature extraction process to the frames of a broadcast program to obtain metadata information in relation with each frame, which is subsequently conveyed to the remote server to be processed so as to define visual objects.
- In a further embodiment of the present invention, said remote server defines visual objects in a program content by way of matching a spotted visual object with a specific object in the visual object database.
- In a further embodiment of the present invention, locational information in relation with a spotted visual object being matched with a specific object and contained in the visual object database is remotely communicated to the image display device by the remote server.
- In a further embodiment of the present invention, locational information in relation with a spotted visual object contains GPS coordinates of the object.
- In a further embodiment of the present invention, locational information is periodically replaced in the form of discontinuously displayed on-screen machine readable codes containing GPS coordinates of the latest spotted object.
- In a further embodiment of the present invention, locational information retrieving function is directly launchable by selecting a corresponding menu option or pressing a corresponding button.
- In a further embodiment of the present invention, locational information presented in the form of machine readable codes are stored in an internal memory of the image display device in an editable manner.
- In a further embodiment of the present invention, locational information conveyed as a digital message in the form of an e-mail communication contains GPS coordinates of the spotted visual object.
- In this regard, the invention ensures that a user is dynamically offered a second source of information relevant to the directly provided information on the screen of an image display device and will therefore be provided with an opportunity to reach the locational information of interest relevant to the directly presented content and context of the program being viewed.
