Definitions
- the present invention relates to a snap-off blade dispenser system.
- the present invention also relates to a dispenser, a snap-off knife, and a method of operating a dispenser.
- WO11046337 A2 discloses a blade case in which a plurality of blades of a snapoff blade utility knife are stored in a stack from where they can be pulled out one at a time.
- the case houses a spring member (e.g. a leaf spring or a plurality of coil springs) and an opening is formed towards the outside of the case and then a pushbar is attached in such a way that the blades, which have been raised upwards due to the spring member, are individually extracted through a discharge hole due to a sliding action of the pushbar.
- a spring member e.g. a leaf spring or a plurality of coil springs
- JP2004033490 A discloses another replacement blade case for a snapoff blade cutter housing a plurality of replacement blades laminated up and down consists of a case body of a rectangular shape in plain view with a top face open, a lid body fitted to the case body, an elastic member pushing up housed replacement blades toward the lid body at all times, a replacement blade takingout opening set at a side wall topend part of the replacement blade case for taking out a replacement blade at an uppermost step, and a slider for pushing out the replacement blade at the uppermost step to the replacement blade takingout opening.
- GB 1 575 285 discloses a magazine used in a knife.
- the magazine comprises a magazine case, a base plate, a cap and spare blades.
- a slider of the knife is moved rearwardly to a position whereby a lug is juxtaposed a projection in the base plate, the lug depressing the projection by deformation of a flap to disengage the projection from an opening in the outermost blade to substitute therefore the lug on the slider.
- the forward movement of the slider results in corresponding advancement of the outer most blade.
- EP 2153947 A2 discloses a cartridge which includes an end portion, the blade platform portion, and a cartridge portion.
- both said magazine and said cartridge appear to be used to change blades inside a knife, and they would typically only be removed from the knife when they are empty.
- FR 2 874 346 A3 discloses a dispenser for storing snap-off blades according the preamble of claim 1.
- a dispenser as defined in claim 1.
- the feature "made in one piece” means that the dispenser consists of only one part, and not several parts or components assembled together.
- the dispenser may for example be injection-moulded or 3D printed or milled.
- the height of the blade extraction opening substantially corresponding to the thickness of one of said blades means that the height is selected relative to the blade thickness such that only one blade at a time can be extracted through the opening.
- the height of the blade extraction opening may for example be 5-10% greater than the thickness of one of said blades, or 0.1 mm greater than the blade thickness.
- the height of the blade extraction opening may for example be 0.5 - 0.8 mm, depending on the thickness of the blades intended to be used with dispenser.
- the height of the blade extraction opening is typically uniform.
- a blade can easily be dispensed with one touch action, for example using a person's thumb to first press down the abutment and then slide the blade out through the blade extraction opening.
- the dispenser can be made in one piece, which facilitates manufacturing and reduces cost. Also, no assembly is necessary.
- the dispenser can be made of plastic, for example polypropylene (PP) or ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene).
- PP polypropylene
- ABS acrylonitrile butadiene styrene
- the dispenser made of plastic such as PP may have an overall flexibility, which for example may facilitate loading the blades into the elongated compartment.
- the back wall portion may comprise an elevated ridge portion at the blade extraction opening.
- the height of the blade extraction opening may be limited to allow only one blade at a time to pass.
- the height of the blade extraction opening may be 0.5 - 0.8 mm.
- the dispenser may further comprise one or more front wall portions bridging the pair of opposing side wall portions and further defining said elongated compartment. In this way, only two opposing moulds, without any intermediate slide, are needed, in case the dispenser is injection-moulded.
- the back wall portion may comprise at least one elastic element adapted to push the stacked snap-off blades towards said one or more front wall portions.
- the at least one elastic element may help aligning the top blade with the blade extraction opening, in particular in case few or only one blade is left in the dispenser.
- the back wall portion may at one end of the dispenser closest to the blade extraction opening have two corners, wherein the corner of said two corners which is remote from the sharp edges of the blades when the blades are accommodated in the elongated compartment is chamfered. In this way, the user will be tempted to grab the blade being dispensed at the chamfered corner. This in turn means that the user will grab the blade at its blunt edge, which improves safety.
- the blades may be accommodated in the elongated compartment.
- a snap-off knife comprising: a housing; and a sliding device for moving an exchangeable snap-off blade into or out of the housing, wherein the housing comprises a longitudinal compartment in which the dispenser according to the first or second aspect is removably fitted.
- the longitudinal compartment accommodating the dispenser may be separated from the sliding device by a partition wall.
- blades are not changed inside the knife using some special mechanism. Instead, when a blade is to be changed, the user may first remove the dispenser from the longitudinal compartment in the knife, dispense one blade using one-touch action while the dispenser is outside the knife, and manually replace the old blade with the dispensed blade. The dispenser may then be put back into the longitudinal compartment. This provides for a simple and failsafe way to change blades.
- a fourth aspect of the present invention there is provided method of operating the dispenser according to the first or second aspect, the dispenser containing at least one blade, which method comprises: manually pushing, using a person's finger, the abutment to disengage the opening of said top blade, wherein the person's finger at the same time touches an area of the top blade surrounding said opening; and manually sliding, using the person's same finger still touching said surrounding area, the top blade so that at least a portion of the top blade protrudes outside the blade extraction opening.
- This aspect may exhibit the same or similar features and technical effects as the other aspects, and vice versa.
- Figures 1-3a discloses a dispenser 10 according to an embodiment of the present invention.
- the dispenser 10 is adapted to store snap-off blades 12, which may be individually dispensed or taken out from the dispenser 10.
- the dispenser 10 may be referred to as a snap-off blade dispenser.
- the dispenser 10 itself may be fitted or accommodated in a snap-off knife, which will be described in more detail later with further reference to figure 4 .
- the dispenser 10 is made in one piece. That is, the dispenser 10 consists of only one part.
- the dispenser 10 may for example be injection-moulded or 3D printed.
- the dispenser 10 can be made of plastics, such as PP or ABS.
- the dispenser 10 comprises a back wall portion 14.
- the back wall portion 14 is rectangular.
- the dispenser 10 further comprises a pair of opposing side wall portions 16a-b.
- the first side wall portion 16a is arranged along one of the longitudinal edges of the back wall portion 14, and the second side wall portion 16b is arranged along the other longitudinal edge of the back wall portion 14.
- the side wall portions 16a-b are arranged perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to the back wall portion 14.
- the dispenser 10 further comprises three front wall portions 18a-c. However, the dispenser 10 could have fewer or more front wall portions.
- the front wall portions 18a-c bridge the opposing side wall portions 16a-b.
- the front wall portions 18a-c are parallel to the back wall portion 14.
- the front wall portions 18a-c in figure 1 are parallelogram-shaped, but could alternatively be rectangular, for example.
- the dispenser 10 further comprises an elongated compartment 20.
- the elongated compartment 20 is defined or delimited by the back wall portion 14, the opposing side wall portions 16a-b, and front wall portions 18a-c.
- the compartment 20 is adapted to accommodate a plurality of stacked snap-off blades 12.
- the compartment 20 is adapted to accommodate the plurality of snap-off blades 12 is a stacked configuration.
- the compartment 20 may for example be sized to accommodate 3-5 stacked blades 12.
- the dispenser 10 in combination with the blades 12, regardless of whether they are outside the dispenser 10 as in fig. 1 or accommodated in the compartment 20 as in fig. 2 may be referred to as a system.
- All the blades 12 typically have the same height H 12 and thickness T 12 .
- the height H 12 may for example be 9 mm, 18 mm or 25 mm.
- the thickness T 12 may for example be 0.5 mm or 0.7 mm.
- the blades 12 are parallelogram-shaped. Each blade 12 has a longitudinal sharp edge 22a and a longitudinal blunt edge 22b. Scores 24, which run obliquely relative to the longitudinal edges 22a-b, indicate where a blade portion can be snapped off.
- Each blade also has an opening 26. The openings 26 are typically circular.
- the compartment 20 has a blade extraction opening 28.
- the blade extraction opening 28 is delimited by the front wall portion 18a, the opposing side wall portions 16a-b, and an elevated ridge portion 30 of the back wall portion 14.
- the blade extraction opening 28 has a width W 28 between the side wall portions 16a-b, and a height H 28 between the front wall portion 18a and the elevated ridge portion 30.
- the height H 28 is typically uniform along the width W 28 .
- the width W 28 of the blade extraction opening 28 substantially corresponds to the height H 12 of the blades.
- the height H 28 of the blade extraction opening 28 substantially corresponds to the thickness T 12 of one of the blades 12. This means that only one blade 12 at a time can be extracted through the blade extraction opening 28.
- the height H 28 of the blade extraction opening 28 may for example be 5-10% greater than the blade thickness T 12 , or 0.1 mm greater than the blade thickness T 12 .
- the height H 28 of the blade extraction opening may for example be (approximately) 0.5 - 0.8 mm, depending on the thickness of the blades 12 intended to be used with dispenser 10.
- the elevated ridge portion 30 may be obliquely arranged relative to the longitudinal direction 32.
- the compartment 20 is delimited in the longitudinal direction by two stop portions 34a-b.
- the stop portions 34a-b are obliquely arranged relative to the longitudinal direction 32 of the compartment 20, to match the parallelogram shape of the blades 12. To this end, when the blades 12 are accommodated in the compartment 20, all sharp edges 22a face the side wall portion 16a, whereas all blunt edges 22b will face the side wall portion 16b.
- the back wall portion 14 further comprises a resiliently arranged abutment 36.
- the abutment 36 is arranged on the side of the back wall portion 14 which generally faces the front wall portions 18a-c.
- the abutment 36 may be cylindrical, with a chamfered top.
- the abutment 36 is arranged on the tip of a tongue 38 formed by a U-shaped cut 40 in the back wall portion 14.
- the tongue 38 with abutment 36 may flex, as illustrated in fig. 2 .
- the abutment 36 When stacked blades 12 are accommodated in the compartment 20, the abutment 36 is sized and positioned so as to engage the openings 26 in all the stacked blades 12 and also stand out from the opening of the top blade 12'.
- the latter means that the height of the abutment 36 may be greater than the total thickness of the maximum number of stacked blades 12 that may be accommodated in the compartment 20.
- the diameter of the abutment 36 may match that of the openings 26 such that the abutment 36 when engaging the openings may prevent or at least limit movement of the blades 12 in the plane of the back wall portion 14 (the xy plane).
- the diameter of the abutment 36 may for example be (approximately) 1 mm less that the diameter of the openings 26 in the blades 12 intended for the dispenser 10.
- the diameter of the abutment 36 may for example be 3-6 mm.
- the back wall portion 14 may further comprise at least one elastic element in the form of two opposing flap portions 42a-b formed by cuts in the back wall portion 14.
- the flap portions 42a-b project obliquely into the compartment 20.
- the flap portions 42a-b push the blades 12 towards the front wall portions 18a-c.
- the top blade 12' may always be aligned with the blade extraction opening 28.
- the flap portions 42a-b may be arranged between the abutment 36 and the elevated ridge portion 30, in particular between front wall portions 18a and 18b.
- the back wall portion 14 may have two corners 46a-b, one of which is chamfered.
- the chamfered corner is designated by reference sign 46b.
- the chamfered corner 46b is located at the end of side wall portion 16b, so that it is remote from the sharp edges 22a when the blades 12 are accommodated in the compartment 20.
- the back wall portion 14 may further comprise grooves 48 arranged between, and parallel to, the chamfered corner 46b and the elevated ridge portion 30. The grooves 48 may improve the grip when a person is operating the dispenser 10, in particular when blades 12 are loaded into the compartment 20.
- the dispenser 10 may comprise a hollow grip portion 50.
- the hollow grip portion 50 is elevated relative to the back side 52a of the dispenser 10.
- the hollow grip portion 50 is centrally located, as seen the transversal direction 54. Viewed from the yz plane, the hollow grip portion 50 may have a cross-sectional shape of an isosceles trapezoid, albeit without the base.
- the hollow grip portion 50 may facilitate taking out the dispenser 10 from the snap-off knife.
- the front side 52b of the dispenser 10 may further comprise a knob 56.
- the knob 56 may be positioned next to stop portions 34a.
- the knob 56 may serve to lock the dispenser 10 in the snap-off knife.
- the back side 52a may have an indent 58 complementary to the knob 56.
- the back side 52a and the front side 52b of the dispenser 10 may be complementary, so that a plurality of dispensers 10 can be stacked or superimposed.
- the knob 56 of a first dispenser may fit into the indent 58 of a second dispenser stacked onto of the first dispenser.
- the hollow grip portion 50 of the second dispenser may be accommodated in the hollowness of the hollow grip portion 50 of the first dispenser.
- all blades 12 may be inserted at the same time through the opening 60 defined by front wall portion 18c and the back wall portion 14, i.e. from right to left in fig. 1 .
- the abutment 36 snaps into and engages the openings 26. Loading the blades 12 may be done manually or by a robot.
- a person When dispending a blade from the dispenser 10, a person manually pushes, using for example his or hers thumb 62, the abutment 36 to disengage the opening 26 of the top blade 12' (see figure 3b ). At the same time, the thumb 62 will touch an area 64 of the top blade 12' surrounding the opening 26. Then, using the thumb 62 still touching the surrounding area 64, the person manually slides the top blade 12' so that at least a portion 66 of the top blade 12' protrudes outside the blade extraction opening 28 (see figure 3c ). The person may then fully remove the blade 12' from the dispenser 10 using his or her other hand. As the top blade 12' is removed, the abutment 36 snaps into and engages the opening 26 of the next blade 12", if there is any blade left in the dispenser 10.
- Figures 4a-b show a snap-off knife 66 with the dispenser 10.
- the knife 66 comprises a housing 68.
- the housing 68 also functions as handle.
- the knife 66 further comprises a sliding device 70.
- the sliding device 70 is in figure 4 depicted with a button, but it could alternatively comprise a locking wheel, for example.
- the sliding device 70 is adapted to move an exchangeable snap-off blade 12'" into or out of the housing 68.
- the housing 68 of the knife 66 comprises a longitudinal compartment 72 (not to be confused with the elongated compartment 20 of the dispenser 10).
- the longitudinal compartment 72 is open towards the rear end 74 of the knife.
- the longitudinal compartment 72 is adapted to accommodate the dispenser 10, which may be removably fitted in the compartment 72.
- the dispenser 10 is partly inserted into (or partly removed from) the compartment 72.
- the dispenser 10 may be completely accommodated in the compartment 72.
- the compartment 72 may be separated from the sliding device 70 by a partition wall 76.
- the user may first remove the dispenser 10 from the longitudinal compartment 72 in the knife 66, dispense one replacement blade 12' as described above in relation to figures 3b-c while the dispenser 10 is outside the knife 66, and then manually replace the old blade 12'" with the dispensed blade 12' (i.e. remove the old blade 12"', if it has not been removed before, and attach the new, dispensed blade 12' to the sliding device 70).
- the dispenser 10 may then be slid back into the longitudinal compartment 72.
