Description

  • The solution relates to flashing for roof-penetrating structures, in particular roof windows, wherein the flashing consists of a top element, two side elements and a bottom element. These elements are installed on the roof relative to each other in an overlapping manner, in the direction of the pitch of the roof. The design of said elements ensures tight connection between the frame of a roof window and roof structure, simultaneously covering its side and top outer surfaces. The flashing as per the solution also enables the window to be embedded in the roof more deeply, thereby improving its insulation performance.
  • Current solutions relating to flashing for roof windows installed around the window are known. Such a flashing consists of a top element, side elements and a bottom element. Elements of the flashing have an L-shaped cross section, where one arm lies in the plane of the roof, while the other, perpendicular to the former, is pressed against the upper, side and bottom window frame elements, as appropriate. Elements of the flashing are installed in an overlapping manner, in the following order: bottom element, side elements and top element. Fitted window is further sealed via elements covering the side of the frame, which are applied to its top surface, with one arm overlapping the arm of the element of the flashing which is pressed against the frame. Complete window sealing also entails trapezoidal shielding elements covering the top surfaces of the side leaf and frame elements, as well as a cap covering the upper leaf and fram elements.
  • Solution from application US5522189 A is known; it shows flashing for roof windows in a standard solution. The flashing comprises two side elements, a top element and a bottom element, installed in the direction of the pitch of the roof. Elements of the flashing have a substantially L-shaped cross-section, where one arm lies in the plane of the roof, while the other is pressed against the side surface of the frame. When installed, the element covering the top surface and the side of the frame overlaps the arm which is pressed against the side surface of the window frame. This covering element is in turn overlapped by a trapezoidal shielding element covering the roof window leaf.
  • Solution from application WO 2007/034171 A1 shows flashing for roof windows whose side element, which is pressed against the window jamb, consists of a part lying in the plane of the roof, which functions as a gutter, and a shielding part which, when installed, is pressed against the side and top surfaces of the jamb, sill or head of the frame. A fragment of the shielding part lying on the top surface of the frame is completely covered with a protective layer and installed to the frame with a screw along with it.
  • The essence of the solution is a flashing connecting roof-penetrating structures with sub-roofing structures, located beneath the roof covering, e.g. roof tiles. The flashing consists of a top element, two side elements and a bottom element. These elements are installed on the sub-roofing surface surrounding the roof-penetrating structure, in particular a roof window, in the direction of the pitch of the roof, creating an enclosed frame around the window. The bottom element is installed first, followed by the side elements and the top element.
  • A roof window consists of a frame and a leaf, wherein each of them comprises upper, two side and bottom elements. Each of frame elements has a side outer surface which, when fitted in the roof, is orthogonal to the surface of roof covering, and a top surface which, when fitted in the roof, is parallel to the surface of roof covering.
  • The top element along with a cap covering the top surfaces of said frame and leaf upper elements is a standard element which constitutes prior art.
  • The side element of the flashing is equipped with a gutter for removing water, lying in the plane of the roof, with an integral part covering the side and top outer surfaces of the frame side elements. Moreover, the part covering the top surface of the frame has a protrusion with a gasket, ensuring tight connection between the leaf and the frame when the window is closed. Trapezoidal shielding elements overlapping the aforementioned gasket, when installed, cover the leaf elements and a fragment of the frame. That way, the contact area between the frame and the leaf is secured against precipitation.
  • The bottom element of the flashing as per the solution consists of a rigid part and a flexible apron. The rigid part, when the flashing is installed, lies directly next to the frame bottom element, while the flexible apron lies on the roof covering, adjusting to its shape.
  • The flashing as per the solution is also equipped with heat insulating strips, fitted between the side outer surface of the frame and the part of the flashing covering this surface; the length of the part of the side element of the flashing covering the top surface of the frame is increased by a value corresponding to the thickness of the heat insulating strip. When installed, the heat insulating strip fits with the top surface of the frame.
  • The flashing is also equipped with a flexible wind-blocking wedge, whose cross section has a favourable, triangular shape and which is applied to outer surfaces of those elements of the flashing which lie in the plane of the roof, particularly at their outer edges, so that, when installed, the wedge is located beneath the roof covering surrounding the window.
  • Benefits of the solution
  • Due to the fact that the side element of the flashing covering the side outer surface of the frame is integral to the cover of the top surface of the frame, the number of components of the flashing is reduced, and its installation as per the proposed solution is simplified and much faster compared to current solutions. The flashing ensures that the connection between the window and the roof covering over the entire height or width of the frame elements is waterproof. Due to the fact that the length of the part of the side element of the flashing which is pressed against the top surface of the frame can be changed, it is possible to fit a heat insulating strip between the part covering the side outer surface of the frame and the side of the frame. The side element of the flashing as per the solution also allows for a much simpler bottom element, with fewer bumps for removing rainwater and reduced size. The fact that there are no additional shielding elements for covering the side of the frame mounted on the top surfaces of frame elements facilitates fitting the window deeper into the roof compared to standard solutions, since in the current solutions, after the window had been lowered, such shielding elements blocked it on the roof structure, especially if the window had heat insulation on the side of the frame. In the proposed solution, the gutter for removing water is integral to the part covering the side and top outer surfaces of the frame; therefore, a window with such flashing can easily be fitted in the roof at various depths.
  • A system of fitting windows in the roof utilizing such a flashing increases their heat insulation performance as a result of them being embedded more deeply in the layered structure of the roof and its heat insulation.
  • The flashing as per the solution is presented via figures, showing, respectively:
    • Fig. 1 exploded view of the flashing,
    • Fig. 2 isometric view of the side element of the flashing,
    • Fig. 3 cross section of the jamb of the window frame with the side element of the flashing and the heat insulating strip pressed against the jamb.
    Example
  • The flashing as per the solution consists of a top element 1, side elements 2 and a bottom element 3. The bottom element 3 consists of a rigid part 10 and a flexible apron 11. The rigid part 10 of the bottom element 3 is installed by the bottom element of the window frame, while the apron 11 adheres to the roof covering, adjusting to its shape. The top element 1 is a standard element which constitutes prior art, which, when installed by the head of the window frame, is combined with a cap 4 covering the top surface of said upper element frame. The top element 1 and the bottom element 2 of the flashing have on their parts which lie in the plane of the roof a wind-blocking wedge 5 which, when the flashing is installed, lies beneath the roof covering immediately surrounding the window. The side element 2 of the flashing presented in an isometric view in Fig. 2 has a gutter 6 lying in the plane of the roof for removing water and a part 7 covering the side and top outer surfaces of the window frame integral to it. A heat insulating strip 9 is located between the side element 2 of the flashing and the side surface of the frame. The part 7 covering the side and top outer surfaces of the frame also has a protrusion 8 with a gasket.
  • When the window is closed, the distance between the leaf and the frame is sealed by a trapezoidal shielding element 12 covering the stiles and rails. This shielding element covers the said side leaf element and a fragment of the frame with the protrusion 8 with a gasket. The rest of the side frame element from the protrusion 8 with a gasket towards the gutter 6 of the flashing, is covered only by the part 7 covering the side and top outer surfaces of the frame, with a heat insulating strip 9.
