Definitions

  • the invention relates to fittings for attachment of a tarpaulin bag in a closed bag for fish farming to float member for supporting the bag in water.
  • the invention also relates to a closed cage system comprising such fittings.
  • cages In fish farming, large cages are often used which are positioned floating in the sea in order to contain the fish.
  • a special type of cage in the closed cage which has a tarpaulin bag which prevents material and organisms from passing in and out of the bag.
  • Fresh water is usually pumped into the cage, wherein an over pressure is created in the cage. This over pressure makes the water in the cage rise approximately 5cm above the level of surrounding water, wherein the walls of the bag are pressed outwards. Therefore, cages are usually circular with float members distributed in a ring along the cage center. The float members may be attached to the cage in several ways.
  • a first alternative is to attach float member and tarpaulin using eyelets in the tarpaulin and rope or bands to respective float members, which leads to concentrated loads on the tarpaulin and a weak connection.
  • a drawback using this type of connection is that the high concentrated loads may break the tarpaulin around the eyelets.
  • FIG. 1 Another alternative is to provide upper portions of the tarpaulin with a bead.
  • upper portions of the tarpaulin are folded over and welded to form a pocket along the upper portion of the tarpaulin, where a belt, band, rope or chain is inserted through the pocket to create the bead. Fittings are then threaded onto the bead from the end of the bead, and moved along the bead to the position along the ring shaped bead where you wish to connect each respective float member with the bead.
  • the ends of the belt, band, rope or chain are then interconnected using welding or friction connection, such as a knot.
  • An object of the invention is to provide technology enabling quick installation of float members to a tarpaulin of a closed cage, to provide ease of maintenance, and at the same time to give a robust connection between float member and tarpaulin.
  • a fitting according to a first embodiment of the invention.
  • the fitting is provided with an elongate first recess for receiving and holding an elongate bead of an upper portion of the cage.
  • the fitting comprises two mutually interlocking members, which when interconnected together define the first recess.
  • the elongate first recess enables locking of the fitting to the bead of the cage. Since the fitting is split in two mutually interlocking parts together define the first recess, it is possible to open the first recess by relative movement of the members, such that the bead can be brought into and out of the recess without having to move the bead out of the recess in the longitudinal direction of the bead. This allows mounting of the fitting anywhere along the bead, without having to thread it from the end of the bead. This enables quicker mounting of a plurality of fittings on the cage, and substantially easier replacement of a damaged fitting.
  • the mutually interlocking members are provided with respective connection means configured to be moved into mutual engagement through relative movement along the elongate first recess. Since the connection means are moved along the elongate first recess, the cross-section of the recess is not affected by the movement, which in turn provides for the bead not preventing relative movement between the parts, despite the bead being held locked between the members until the members' connection means have gone out of mutual engagement.
  • connection means comprise at least one second elongate recess provided in one of the members, and one or more corresponding protrusions provided on the other one of the members.
  • the one or more protrusions of the connections means are slideable in the at least one elongate recess for movement of the respective protrusion into and out of the at least one elongate recess.
  • the elongate recesses and the protrusions lock the members to each other such that they by loading, for example by lifting or towing of the cage, prevent the bead from leaving the elongate first recess. Since the recesses and protrusions are elongate, the very high tensions that may arise, are distributed along the length of the fitting, such that the fitting can stand higher loads.
  • the mutually interlocking members are profiles with substantially uniform respective cross sections. This design allows manufacturing using extrusion of for example aluminum, which gives a relatively uncomplicated production, high strength and low weight.
  • the two members are provided with respective thorough holes, which are aligned when the members are mounted together. When the fitting members have been brought together, the thorough holes are aligned such that a belt, chain or rope can be inserted through the holes and used for lifting or otherwise applying a force to the fitting, and thereby to the cage.
  • This design is very strong and allows very high loads, while at the same time enabling quick and easy mounting without tools. Of course, a chain, rope or similar can be used instead of a belt.
  • the goal is achieved by a cage system for fish farming.
  • a cage system for fish farming comprises a closed cage with a tarpaulin wall, wherein an upper portion of the tarpaulin is attached to a band, such as a rope or chain, for provision of a bead.
  • the cage system also comprises a plurality of fittings according to the first aspect described above, said fittings being configured for cooperation with the bead and the elongate first recess of each respective fitting.
  • Such a cage system provides for quick and easy mounting of fittings on the cage, while at the same time providing for a very strong connection between cage and fitting. Further the system enables quick and easy replacement of a fitting without need for prior removal of other fittings.
  • the system comprises the belt, chain or rope which shall lock through the thorough holes, wherein the thorough holes are configured to match the width of the belt, chain or rope are configured to match the width of the belt, chain or rope (13) such that the belt, chain or roper prevents relative sliding movement between the mutually interlocking members.
  • the belt is brought through the thorough holes, wherein the belt prevents relative sliding of the respective fitting members, which in turn protects the fitting from removal from the cage until the belt has been removed from the thorough holes.
  • Fig. 1 shows in perspective view a fitting according to a first embodiment of the invention, in dismounted position, and a partial view of a tarpaulin and a bead to which the fitting is to be connected;
  • Fig. 2 shows in perspective view the fitting of the first embodiment, in a partially mounted position, and a partial view of tarpaulin and a bead to which the fitting is about to be connected.
  • Fig. 3 shows in perspective view the fitting of Figs. 1 and 2 in mounted position attached to the tarpaulin via the bead, wherein the thorough holes of the fitting are aligned, with a belt inserted through the holes;
  • Fig. 4 shows a partial side view of tarpaulin, bead and fitting, in mounted position
  • Fig. 5 shows in perspective view the two fitting members
  • Fig. 6 shows in perspective view a cage system according to the first embodiment, together with floats and a bottom drain;
  • Fig. 7 shows a cross section of the fitting also shown in Figs. 1 -5;
  • Figs. 8-9 show one of the fitting members and Figs. 10-1 1 show the other fitting member.
  • Figs. 1 -5 show a fitting according to a first embodiment of the invention; in Fig. 1 before assembly; in Fig. 2 partly assembled; and in Figs. 3-4 fully assembled.
  • the length of the fitting is 350 mm, the height 75 mm and total width 37 mm. In other embodiments this can be varied accordingly as the width of the bead is varied and different strength is desired.
  • the closed cage comprises a circular basin shaped bag formed by a plurality of tarpaulin segments 1 1 which are joined for forming the bag. Only a partial view of each tarpaulin segment 11 is shown in Figs. 1-5.
  • the bag has a ring shaped upper circumferential portion with a bead 3. A plurality of the fittings 1 are distributed along this bead 3 in order to attach the tarpaulin 11 to the floating members 1.
  • the bag has a diameter of 59 meters. Every fitting 1 of the example illustrated in Fig. 6 is loaded with 2500N pulling force at its thorough hole 8, 9 with a water level inside the cage exceeding surrounding water level by approximately 5 cm.
  • the fitting 1 consists of two fitting members 4, 5 being extruded aluminum profiles.
  • the fitting members 4, 5 are provided with fitting means 6, 7 such that they are mutually interlocking.
  • the fitting members 4, 5 could be produced in other materials, and using other production methods, as long as the strength of the fitting is high enough.
  • the fitting could be made of injection molded or extruded glass fiber reinforced plastic. Extrusion of aluminum profiles is a relatively cost efficient production method, giving low tooling cost and high precision.
  • the fitting members 4, 5 are provided with each one recess, which when the fitting members are assembled, together define an elongate recess 2, for receiving and holding an elongate bead 3 of an upper portion of the tarpaulin 11.
  • the recess 2 for receiving the bead 3 could just as well be formed by a recess in one of the fitting members 4, 5 and any suitable surface of the other fitting member 4, 5, as long as the fitting members 4, 5 together define an elongate recess 2 for receiving and holding the bead 3.
  • the parting line between the fitting members could be arranged at one side of the bead, wherein a first one of the fitting members has a recess for receiving the bead, and wherein the other fitting member has a planar surface preventing the bead from moving out of the recess of the first one of the fitting members.
  • the fitting means could comprise yet one member, which connects the two fitting members 4, 5, for example a member having two protrusions which may be slid into two corresponding recesses if the first and second fitting members 4, 5 in order to connect them.
  • connection means there are both upper and lower fitting members, but it should be realized that, within the scope of the invention, the fitting may have more or fewer connection means, as long as the connection means can handle the force and momentum created between the fitting members at loading.
  • connection means An advantage of having two spaced apart connection means, is that momentum around a longitudinal axis of each connection means is absorbed by pressing and pulling forces between the fitting members, such that the stress in the individual connection means is lower.
  • the upper connection means are provided in an upper portion of the fitting which together with the lower portion of the fitting forms an I-beam structure, which increases the stiffness of the fitting adjacent the thorough holes.
  • the thorough holes are provided in an intermediate distance portion of this I-beam structure, and thus do not weaken the stiffness of the fitting much.
  • the bead is formed by upper portions of the tarpaulin 11 being folded and welded for forming a longitudinal pocket expanded by a band 12 provided in the pocket.
  • This band 12 does not necessarily need to have a circular cross-section, as long as it contributes in forming the bead.
  • the cross-section could be oval or polygonal.
  • the bead 3 could also be produced using other methods, within the scope of the present invention, as long as the bead 3 is longitudinal along upper portion of the tarpaulin 11 and can cooperate with the fitting as desired.
  • the band could be a wire, a rope, a metal or plastic rod, or some other suitable profile.
  • the belt 13 shown in the figures could in another embodiment be replaced by a chain, rope or similar, wherein the cross-section of the thorough holes would be adapted accordingly such that high enough strength is achieved for preventing relative displacement between the interlocking members.
  • the invention also relates to a cage system for fish farming.
  • the system comprises a closed trap with a tarpaulin wall, wherein an upper portion of the tarpaulin is attached to a band, such as a rope or chain, such that a bead is created.
  • the cage system further comprise a plurality of the above-described fittings, adapted for cooperation between bead and each respective fitting's longitudinal first recess.
