Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a battery charger.
  • Battery chargers are used for charging electrical devices, such as mobile phones, laptops and tablet computers. Many battery chargers are equipped with an interchangeable plug so that by changing the plug the battery charger can be connected to different types of socket outlets. An interchangeable plug thus enables the same battery charger to be used in countries where different standards are complied with.
  • a plug to a battery charger.
  • the plug is received in a recess of the charger body.
  • the plug is slid into its place along guiding grooves provided in the recess, and interlocked with the charger body by means of a locking mechanism.
  • the plug is detached from the charger body by pressing a release button of the locking mechanism, and sliding the plug away from the charger body.
  • Examples of a battery charger having an interchangeable plug are described in the documents US 2005/0176281 A1 and US 8,398,430 B1 .
  • a problem associated with the above described battery charger and other known battery chargers having an interchangeable plug is that the detachment of the plug requires the user to simultaneously press the release button of the locking mechanism and move the plug relative to the charger body. This is difficult, and can even be impossible for some users.
  • the battery charger according to the invention is characterised by what is presented in the characterising part of the appended independent claim.
  • Advantageous embodiments of the invention are described in the dependent claims.
  • a typical battery charger according to the invention comprises a body and a plug detachably coupled to the body.
  • the plug comprises a coupling part having a bottom and two sides, each of said sides comprising a first guiding rail provided with a locking slot
  • the body comprises a coupling recess for receiving the coupling part, said coupling recess having a bottom and two opposite side walls, each of said side walls comprising a first guiding groove provided with a locking spring that is connected to the body in a floating manner so that the locking spring may move in the longitudinal direction of the first guiding groove, wherein the first guiding grooves are arranged to receive the first guiding rails so that the locking springs are engageable with the locking slots, and wherein the locking springs are flat springs.
  • a battery charger according to the invention is equipped with an interchangeable plug.
  • the plug may comprise protruding prongs, blades or pins that fit into matching slots or holes in a socket outlet.
  • the battery charger may be coupled with different types of socket outlets.
  • the first guiding rails are arranged to be slideable along the first guiding grooves.
  • the plug is attached to the charger body by sliding the first guiding rails along the first guiding grooves until the locking springs are engaged with the locking slots.
  • the plug is interlocked with the body by means of the locking springs and slots.
  • the plug is detached from the charger body by moving the plug in the opposite direction, whereby the locking springs are disengaged from the locking slots and the first guiding rails are slid away from the first guiding grooves.
  • the coupling part and the coupling recess are preferably essentially rectangular.
  • the coupling part may comprise a bottom, two opposite sides, and two opposite ends.
  • the coupling recess may comprise a bottom, two opposite side walls, and two opposite ends.
  • the coupling part and the coupling recess are dimensioned in such a manner that the coupling part fits into the coupling recess.
  • the first guiding rails located on the opposite sides of the coupling part and the first guiding grooves located on the opposite side walls of the coupling recess are arranged symmetrically with each other so that the first guiding grooves may receive the first guiding rails.

  • the locking spring protrudes from the first guiding groove.
  • the first guiding groove may be provided with an aperture through which the locking spring is arranged to protrude.
  • the first guiding rail presses the locking spring towards the first guiding groove.
  • the locking slot of the first guiding rail comes into alignment with the locking spring, the locking spring is projected into the locking slot, whereby the plug is interlocked with the body.
  • the locking spring can be made of different materials, such as for example metal or plastic.

  • the two locking springs can be separate parts or they can be connected together to constitute a locking spring assembly.
  • the plug can be attached and detached easily. Especially, the detachment of the plug is much easier than in the prior art battery chargers because the detachment of the plug does not require any release button to be pressed.
  • the plug may be attached and detached simply by moving the plug relative to the body.
  • the locking spring comprises a bent portion made of a metal strip for engaging with the locking slot.
  • the bent portion has a shape that essentially corresponds to the shape of the locking slot.
