Description
The present invention relates to a device for controlling the charge of an aerosol and it relates more particularly, to a device for controlling the charge of an aerosol using dielectric barrier discharges.
An aerosol is a set of particles, solid or liquid, of a chemical substance or a mixture of chemical substances suspended in a gaseous medium. “Neutralized aerosol” is understood to mean an aerosol for which the average charge of the particles in suspension is almost zero (that is to say between -1 and +1 elementary charge) and when the distribution of the charge levels is “of Boltzmann type "or" unimodal ". The term “charged species” is understood here to mean positive or negative gas ions and electrons.
There are known devices for controlling the charge of an aerosol.
Among these devices, radioactive devices are known which produce bipolar ions in equal densities in order to neutralize an aerosol. However, in addition to the high cost of these radioactive devices, the legislative constraints associated with their use are heavy (authorization required, need to have a person competent in radiation protection, regular control of the tightness of the source, treatment of radioactive waste).

Electric shocks produce ozone and nitrogen oxides, these gaseous species are oxidizing and are therefore likely to deteriorate materials or have harmful effects on health.
The invention overcomes the aforementioned drawbacks by proposing a device for controlling the charge of an aerosol that does not use radioactive materials and whose neutralized aerosol contains little or no toxic effluents (ozone and nitrogen oxides produced by landfills).

- une zone de mélange de l'aérosol avec une partie des espèces chargées issues de la zone de décharge ;

The advantages of the invention are manifold.
With the invention, the mixing between the charged species and the particles carried out in post-discharge makes it possible to avoid fouling of the discharge zone which is critical for the stability of the source of charged species. In addition, the ratio of the densities of the charged species can be adjusted either by imposing a torque (voltage, gas flow) ensuring iso density or by means of an electrode positioned in post-discharge.
The invention finds particular application in the measurement of size and concentration of aerosols by the use of an electric mobility analyzer. The aerosols having been neutralized beforehand, the fraction positively or negatively charged is sorted by an electrostatic field in a differential mobility analyzer. The aerosols are then counted by range of electric mobility. Since electric mobility is related to particle size, an inversion of the data allows particle size distributions to be obtained.

In order to cause a discharge, the device comprises a high voltage generator (not shown) adapted to polarize the
In the
It is noted that the voltage applied to the

Still according to the first embodiment, the gaseous effluents formed in the
Furthermore, the device 1 for controlling the charge of an aerosol according to the first embodiment of the invention has the advantage of not using additional air flow and therefore does not involve dilution during an aerosol / ionized air mixture.
In order to inject the dry air AS into the
Advantageously, the
AN.As for the second embodiment, the
Ions and electrons are formed in the
The ions of the two polarities acquire the same average speed as the gas. However, the negative ions produced by ionization are smaller than the positive ions produced by ionization. Negative ions therefore have greater mechanical and electrical mobility than positive ions. The average electric mobility of a negative ion is around 1.8 cm 2 .v -1 .m -1 and that of a positive ion around 1.4 cm 2 .v -1 .m -1 . Negative ions therefore diffuse faster than positive ions and in a given electric field, they acquire a speed of electrostatic drift greater than positive ions. The consequence of this difference in electrical mobility is that negative ions are lost faster to the walls than positive ions. Thus, in the second embodiment, the ions are extracted from the
On the other hand, in the first and third embodiments, the extraction occurs without flow or against flow, there is generally an excess of negative ions at the output because it is exclusively the electrostatic effects which extract the ions (negative ions being more mobile they are therefore better extracted despite the excess of positive ions in the discharge). The excess of negative ions attenuates along the path of the ions in post-discharge to find finally an excess of positive ions. Thus, for each voltage applied between the main electrodes (defining the densities of positive and negative ions suspended in the
In all of the embodiments described, it is also possible to place a
In the case where the effluents from the discharge are blown, a
