Definitions

  • the present disclosure relates generally to a luggage article and particularly to a luggage article with an adjustable divider to improve the securement of the luggage contents.
  • Luggage articles conventionally include straps or panel dividers attached to the inside of the article.
  • the straps or panel dividers separate and secure the sundry items within the luggage articles.
  • the straps or dividers are fixedly attached to the walls, bottom panel, or at the intersection of the two.
  • the straps or panel dividers may be adjustable to control the compression of the sundry items by lengthening or shortening the attachment mechanisms.
  • the straps or panel dividers used on a luggage article are typically positioned at or near the bottom wall of the luggage article, on which the contents are packed.
  • the straps, dividers, or tie-downs are typically mounted at or near the bottom wall of the luggage article to provide a base toward which to pull and secure the contents of the luggage. From this angle, the contents are secured against the base.
  • An identified problem with the conventional design scheme is that stationary attachments points reduce the utility of the divider panel by restricting the ability to secure and organize the contents of the luggage, which could result in unwanted shifting, wrinkling, or damage to the contents of the luggage during transportation. While adjustable attachment arrangements have been proposed these have to date also been found to have problems, in particular being difficult to adjust and less secure that stationary attachments of the divider and/or difficult to operate and complicated.
  • a luggage article in an example of the present disclosure, includes an interior cavity defined by a plurality of walls including sidewalls and an inside bottom wall.
  • the luggage article also includes a divider attached to the side walls such that the divider separates the interior cavity spaced from the bottom wall.
  • the sidewalls include a plurality of discrete attachment locations, at least some of which are spaced at different nominal heights from the bottom wall.
  • the divider includes a plurality of attachment fittings adapted to releasably and selectively engage a corresponding discrete attachment location to releasably and selectively connect the divider to at least one sidewall at the discrete attachment locations.
  • the divider may be a panel divider.
  • the divider may be attached to the plurality of sidewalls by a plurality of straps.
  • the divider may be a plurality of crossing ribbons.
  • the divider may be attached to the plurality of sidewalls at corners located at intersections of the plurality of sidewalls.
  • the divider may be attached directly to the plurality of sidewalls away from the plurality of sidewalls intersecting corners.
  • the corresponding discrete attachment locations are defined by a plurality of receiver housings with each receiver housing comprising a plurality of attachment positions.
  • the plurality of attachment fittings may be bayonet connectors.
  • the plurality of attachment fittings may include an engagement portion with one or more radially extending tabs forming a T-shaped fitting.
  • the receiver housing includes one or more apertures, operable to receive the attachment fittings with the one or more radially extending tabs.
  • the one or more apertures may be a series of apertures positioned relative to one another in a line. When each aperture is connected to the attachment fitting the divider may be spaced a different distance from the bottom wall as compared to connections with the other apertures.
  • Each of the series of apertures may be operable to receive a bayonet fitting.
  • the apertures may include a first slot that receives at least one of the one or more radially extending tabs.
  • the first slots may extend through a receiver-housing surface and into the receiver housing.
  • the apertures may include a second slot that extends circumferentially below the receiver-housing surface.
  • the second slot may allow the radially extending tabs to travel under the surface while the bayonet fitting is rotated.
  • the apertures may include a third slot that extends toward the surface of the receiver housing from the second slot. The third slot may prevent rotation of the bayonet fitting in response to the radially extending tabs being engaged within the third slot.
  • the divider may include a rotatable connection between the divider and the attachment fitting that allows the attachment fitting to rotate while the divider does not rotate.
  • the attachment fitting may be operable to be inserted into the receiver housing and be rotated to a locked in position.

  • the body portion 122 attaches to the divider, such as by forming a ring or loop 124 to receive a strap (e.g. strap 132a in Fig. 5 ) extending from a corner of the divider 130.
  • a preferable connection may be one that is a rotatable connection between the divider and the attachment fitting.
  • a rotatable connection such as strap 132a in Fig. 5 ) may allow the attachment fitting 120 to rotate while the divider does not rotate.
  • Allowing the attachment fitting 120 to rotate independently of the divider allows for simplified connection between fitting 120 and the receiver housing 110. This also allows the attachment fitting to be inserted into the receiver housing 110 and be rotated to a locked in position.
  • the divider may be attached to the attachment fitting 120 by an elasticated strap that may resiliently hold the divider in position.
  • the rotational connection structure such as by the bayonet connector, allows a user to connect and disconnect the divider as described above with one hand, and also without necessarily having to see the fitting or the receiver housing.
  • the insertion portion 126 may be cylindrical and one or more radially extending tabs to form a T-shaped spigot configuration.
  • the radially extending tabs 128 may extend from the insertion portion 126 on opposite sides of the cylinder forming a t-shaped head.
  • the releasable fitting 120 may have only one radially extending tab. The releasable fittings 120 may also attach directly to the divider without an intervening strap.
  • the fitting is releasably secured in the housing connector.
  • the insertion portion 126 is inserted into openings 114a ( Fig. 5 ) on receiver housing 110a.
  • the fitting 120a is rotated to radially align the tabs 128 with the slots 118.
  • the divider may include a connection 132a to the fitting 120a that allows for independent rotation to accomplish this task.
  • the tabs are received first in the slots 118, and upon further insertion intersect slot 117, which allow the insertion portion to be rotated within the aperture. See Fig. 6 .
  • the tabs intersect channel 119.
  • the tabs seat in channel 119 and secure the fitting into the receiver housing 110.
  • Each of the other fittings may be likewise connected to corresponding receiver housings 110 on the luggage article 100.
  • the divider 130 is anchored to the walls of luggage article 100 and forms a partition and/or content securement structure as shown in Fig. 2 .
  • the fittings are rotated in the reverse order as above.
  • a tension may be applied between fittings through the divider 130. This tension force acts in a direction to bias the fittings to withdraw from the apertures, which enhances the seating engagement of the tabs in the channels 119.
  • the receiver housing 110 may be located in a corner 106a of the luggage article 100. Likewise, other receiver housings 110b-d may be located in corresponding corners of the luggage article 100 (see Figs. 1 and 2 ).
  • the fitting 120 is received in one of the discrete positions 113a, 114a, or 115a to allow selective adjustment of the spacing between the divider 130 and the lower wall 140.
  • position 113a may be a distance C from the lower wall 140.
  • Position 114a may be a distance of B from the lower wall 140.
  • Position 115a may be a distance of A from the lower wall 140.
  • Each of A, B, and C may be different distances.
  • the divider 130 when the divider 130 is engaged in in position 113a it may be positioned a farther distance form the lower wall 140 than if the divider 130 were moved to position 114a or 115a. As such, the discrete locations 113a, 114a, or 115a translates to different discrete nominal heights A, B, and C for divider 130.
  • the fitting 120a is connected to the divider 130a. It is contemplated that the fitting may connected to the walls of the luggage article, with the receiving portions connected to the divider. It is also contemplated that the divider may be connected to a plurality of receiver housings and be positioned above the bottom wall at generally the same height at each receiver housing. The divider may also be connected to a plurality of receiver housings and be positioned above the bottom wall by a different height at one or more of the plurality of receiver housings.
  • the receiver utilized to link the divider 130 to the various walls of the luggage article 100 may differ from the receiver housings 110 described above.
  • the receiver may employ various different connection structures that may include any of a variety of mechanical apparatus suitable to selectively and removably link the divider 130 to the various walls of luggage article 100 at a plurality of discrete locations.
  • An example of such mechanical apparatus includes enclosed rings or loops positioned at the discrete adjustment positions 113, 114, and 115 on the luggage walls, and a hook corresponding to each ring affixed to the divider 130.
  • Each hook on the divider 130 may releasably engage a ring, thereby fixing that portion of the divider relative to the wall of the luggage article at the specific height of the loop.
  • the luggage article structure of the present disclosure has broad application. It may also be implemented on any, some, or all lower regions of the luggage article, upper regions of the luggage article and in any orientation in the luggage article to maximize the possible uses of divider within a luggage article.
