  • substantially exactly in this regard means that the surfaces are identical except for the eventual presence of tolerance deviations that may result from making the pad. This allows for a relatively precise placement of the attachment device on the tooth and helps in maximizing the bonding strength.
  • Components of the assembly 200 and the attachment device 281 may be manufactured according to any number of methods known to the skilled artisan. These methods include, but are not limited to, milling, investment casting, metal injection molding, and rapid prototyping. If desired, one or more of these components can also be manufactured from other classes of materials, such as ceramics, polymers, or composites. If polymeric components are used, these may optionally be formed by milling, injection molding, extrusion or additive manufacturing. Examples of suitable additive manufacturing processes include solid freeform fabrication such as 3D printing processes, stereolithography methods, fused deposition modeling, laminated object manufacturing, laser engineered net shaping, selective laser sintering, shape deposition manufacturing, selective laser melting , and solid ground curing.. An example of a suitable 3D printing machine is the Eden brand 500V printer from Objet Geometries Ltd., using FullCure 720 acrylic-based photopolymer printing material (also available from Objet Geometries Ltd.).
  • the mounting bar 282 may be created separately from the base 281 and thereafter welded or otherwise coupled to the exterior surface.
  • a wire of suitable thickness, strength and resilience may be crimped to create the appropriate segments and recesses, and thereafter bond to the base 281.
  • a suitable wire may be secured to the pad at two locations and thereafter crimped to create the desired struts and recesses.
  • compositions useful in bonding the attachment device 280 to the tooth enamel are well known to those skilled in the art.
  • suitable hardenable dental compositions include orthodontic adhesives such as composites, compomers, glass ionomers and resin-modified glass ionomers.
  • Examples of light-curable adhesives include Transbond XT brand and Transbond PLUS brand adhesives from 3M Unitek Corporation (Monrovia, CA).
  • Examples of chemical curing adhesives include Concise brand adhesive and Unitek TM Multi-Cure brand glass ionomer cement from 3M Unitek Corporation.
  • the tooth structure of the attachment device target site can be untreated or treated.
  • the tooth structure is treated with a self-etching primer prior to contacting 281 with the tooth structure.
  • the hardenable dental composition can typically be hardened during or immediately after compressing the compressible material.
  • the hardenable dental composition is self-etching, and the tooth structure can be untreated prior to applying the attachment device 281.
  • the hardenable dental composition preferably contacts the tooth structure for a period of time (e.g., 15 seconds or more) prior to hardening the hardenable dental composition.
  • the tooth structure can be treated by phosphoric acid etching, followed by priming with a suitable orthodontic primer such as TRANSBOND XT brand primer or TRANSBOND MIP brand primer (both from 3M Unitek, Monrovia, CA).
  • Relatively large intra-oral forces are often applied to orthodontic components during movement of the jaws.
  • the forces generated when chewing can be significant, especially when the patient bites into a hard food object such as hard candy, nuts or ice.
  • the chewing forces can be especially large in molar regions of the patient's jaws, and hard food objects can transmit the forces to the attached orthodontic components.
  • the forces can break the components or cause the components to spontaneously detach from the teeth such that the progress of treatment is interrupted. These components may be accidentally consumed by the wearer, or may cause damage to the cheeks or gingival tissue when untethered to the dental arch.
  • the assembly 300 includes a force module 308, a banded tube 350, a connector 302, and an attachment device 380. Many aspects of the connector 302, force module 308, banded tube 350, and attachment module 380 are similar to those components illustrated above and are not separately discussed further.
  • the orthodontic assembly 300 is distinguishable from prior assemblies due to the presence of a second attachment device 390 in the form of a button secured to a tooth in a distal relationship to attachment device 280.
  • the button 390 is secured to a lower, first bicuspid tooth surface.
  • a ligature 392 is wound around the button 390 and coupled to the mounting bar 382 proximate the second recess 286.
  • the ligature 392 may be a wire or elastomeric ring (e.g. O-ring, or one or more orthodontic power chain segments), but can conceivably comprise any material suitable for loosely attaching the button 390 to the mounting bar 282, including filamentous thread. Securing the attachment device 380 to another structure reduces the risk that components of the orthodontic assembly 300 (particularly the third member 318 and attachment device 390) can be swallowed or inhaled, even in the event of fracture or debonding. The relatively loose attachment provided by the ligature reduces the likelihood that any unwanted force between the two devices will interfere with prescribed treatment.
  • the second attachment device 390 can be positioned on a lingual tooth surface and the ligature between first and second attachment devices 380, 390 could be placed at an interdental (i.e., interproximal) position.
  • the attachment device 380 could be secured via appropriate ligature to a lingual bracket, orthodontic archwire, or a combination of both.
  • the lingual bracket and/or archwire used to anchor the attachment device 380 may be located on the same or a different tooth.
  • the force modules and attendant orthodontic assemblies described herein are normally used in pairs. While the Figures depict the orthodontic assemblies in place along the left side of a patient's oral cavity, a second assembly that is similar to the depicted orthodontic assemblies in mirror image is typically installed along the right side of the patient's oral cavity. In this manner, a balanced amount of force is presented along both sides of the patient's jaws for repositioning the dental arches as desired.
  • one or more of the orthodontic correctors above are adapted to correct a Class III malocclusion. Such correction may be achieved, for example, by connecting the one end of the assembly to an attachment device secured to an anterior tooth of the upper arch and the other end of the assembly to a lower banded tube. As before, the connections between components benefit from the increased robustness and functionality provided by the present disclosure.

Claims (16)

  1. Ensemble orthodontique (100 ; 200 ; 300) pour appliquer des forces thérapeutiques entre des arcades dentaires supérieure et inférieure d'un patient en l'absence d'un arc dentaire ou d'un autre bracket lié labialement comprenant :
    un connecteur (102 ; 202 ; 302) pour couplage à un appareil d'arcade supérieure ;
    un premier dispositif de fixation (280 ; 380) comprenant une base (281) ayant une surface faisant face aux dents conçue pour liaison à une dent antérieure et à une surface faciale, le dispositif de fixation (280 ; 380) comprenant en outre une barre de montage (282) couplée à et espacée de la surface faciale de la base (281), dans lequel la barre de montage (282) inclut un segment mésial-distal (283) et un segment de sollicitation (284), le segment mésial-distal (283) et le segment de sollicitation (284) coopérant pour définir un évidement (285), dans lequel le segment de sollicitation (284) s'étend selon un angle aigu par rapport au segment mésial-distal (283) ; et
    un module de force (108 ; 208 ; 308) ayant deux extrémités opposées, avec une extrémité conçue pour couplage au connecteur (102 ; 202 ; 302) et l'extrémité opposée (218) conçue pour être reçue dans l'évidement (285) de la barre de montage (282) du dispositif de fixation (280 ; 380).
  2. Ensemble orthodontique (100 ; 200 ; 300) selon la revendication 1, dans lequel une barre de montage (282) est couplée à la base (281) par une paire de traverses espacées (287 ; 288) s'étendant vers l'extérieur à partir de la surface faciale de la base (281), une traverse (288) coopérant avec le segment mésial-distal (283) pour fournir un deuxième renfoncement annulaire (286) pour réception de l'extrémité opposée (218) du module de force (108 ; 208 ; 308).
  3. Ensemble orthodontique (100 ; 200 ; 300) selon la revendication 1, dans lequel le segment de sollicitation (284) s'étend dans une direction allant vers les surfaces occlusives de l'arcade dentaire lorsque le dispositif de fixation (280 ; 380) est monté sur la dent antérieure.
  4. Ensemble orthodontique (100 ; 200 ; 300) selon la revendication 1, dans lequel l'extrémité opposée (218) du module (208) inclut une configuration de boucle, et dans lequel au moins une partie de la configuration de boucle est reçue dans l'évidement (285).
  5. Ensemble orthodontique (100 ; 200 ; 300) selon la revendication 1, dans lequel le segment mésial-distal (283) et le segment de sollicitation (284) coopèrent pour limiter la rotation du module de force (108 ; 208 ; 308) autour d'un axe de référence généralement mésial-distal.
  6. Ensemble orthodontique (100 ; 200 ; 300) selon la revendication 1, dans lequel le dispositif de fixation (280 ; 380) est conçu pour être fixé à une canine.
  7. Ensemble (100 ; 200 ; 300) selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes et comprenant en outre un deuxième dispositif de fixation (390) fixé à un emplacement distal par rapport au premier dispositif de fixation (380) sur la même arcade dentaire, dans lequel le deuxième dispositif de fixation (390) est relié au premier dispositif de fixation (380).
  8. Ensemble (100 ; 200 ; 300) selon la revendication 7, dans lequel le deuxième dispositif de fixation (390) est ligaturé au premier dispositif de fixation (380).
  9. Ensemble (100 ; 200 ; 300) selon l'une quelconque des revendications précédentes et comprenant en outre un deuxième dispositif de fixation (390) fixé à une surface dentaire linguale, dans lequel le deuxième dispositif de fixation (390) est relié au premier dispositif de fixation (380).
  10. Groupe orthodontique d'éléments comprenant :
    un ensemble de brackets couplés aux surfaces linguales de l'arcade dentaire d'un patient ;
    un fil relié aux brackets ; et
    un ensemble orthodontique (100 ;200 ;300) pour appliquer des forces thérapeutiques entre des arcades dentaires supérieure et inférieure d'un patient en l'absence d'un arc dentaire ou d'un autre bracket lié labialement comprenant
    un connecteur (102 ; 202 ; 302) pour couplage à un appareil d'arcade supérieure ;
    un premier dispositif de fixation (280 ; 380) fixé à une surface labiale d'une dent antérieure et comprenant une base (281) ayant une surface faisant face aux dents liée à la surface labiale et à une surface faciale, le dispositif de fixation (280 ; 380) comprenant en outre une barre de montage (282) couplée à et espacée de la surface faciale de la base (281), dans lequel la barre de montage (282) inclut un segment mésial-distal (283) et un segment de sollicitation (284), le segment mésial-distal (283) et le segment de sollicitation (284) coopérant pour définir un évidement (285), dans lequel le segment de sollicitation (284) s'étend selon un angle aigu par rapport au segment mésial-distal (283) ; et
    un module de force (108 ; 208 ; 308) ayant deux extrémités opposées, avec une extrémité couplée au connecteur et l'extrémité opposée ayant une structure reçue entre la barre de montage et la base du dispositif de fixation.
  11. Groupe orthodontique d'éléments selon la revendication 10, dans lequel le segment mésial-distal et le segment de sollicitation de l'ensemble orthodontique (100 ; 200 ; 300)
    définissent un évidement, dans lequel une partie de l'extrémité opposée du module de force (108 ; 208 ; 308) est reçue dans l'évidement.
  12. Groupe orthodontique d'éléments selon la revendication 11, dans lequel l'extrémité opposée du module de l'ensemble orthodontique (100 ; 200 ; 300)
    inclut une configuration de boucle, et dans lequel au moins une partie de la configuration de boucle est reçue dans l'évidement.
  13. Groupe orthodontique d'éléments selon la revendication 10, dans lequel le module de force (108 ; 208 ; 308) de l'ensemble orthodontique (100 ; 200 ; 300)
    inclut un axe longitudinal, et dans lequel le segment mésial-distal et le segment de sollicitation coopèrent pour limiter une rotation du module de force (108 ; 208 ; 308) autour de l'axe longitudinal.
  14. Groupe orthodontique d'éléments selon la revendication 10, dans lequel l'appareil supérieur de l'ensemble orthodontique (100 ; 200 ; 300)
    inclut une bande ayant une surface avec un contour qui se rapproche du ou correspond au contour d'une surface occlusive d'une molaire.
  15. Trousse incluant un ensemble orthodontique (100 ; 200 ; 300) pour appliquer des forces thérapeutiques entre des arcades dentaires supérieure et inférieure d'un patient en l'absence d'un arc dentaire ou d'un autre bracket lié labialement comprenant
    un connecteur (102 ; 202 ; 302) pour couplage à un appareil d'arcade supérieure ;
    un premier dispositif de fixation (280 ; 380) conçu pour liaison à une dent antérieure et comprenant une base (281) ayant une surface faisant face aux dents conçue pour liaison à la dent antérieure et une surface faciale, le dispositif de fixation (280 ; 380) comprenant en outre une barre de montage (282) couplée à et espacée de la surface faciale de la base (281), dans lequel la barre de montage (282) inclut un segment mésial-distal (283) et un segment de sollicitation (284), le segment mésial-distal (283) et le segment de sollicitation (284) coopérant pour définir un évidement (285), dans lequel le segment de sollicitation (284) s'étend selon un angle aigu par rapport au segment mésial-distal (283) ; et
    un module de force (108 ; 208 ; 308) ayant deux extrémités opposées, avec une extrémité conçue pour couplage au connecteur et l'extrémité opposée (218) ayant une structure conçue pour être reçue entre la barre de montage (282) et la base (281) pour couplage du module de force (108 ; 208 ; 308) au dispositif de fixation (280 ; 380)
    ladite trousse comprenant en outre
    des instructions pour installer le module de force (108 ; 208 ; 308) et le dispositif de fixation (280 ; 380) sur une arcade dentaire d'un patient.
  16. Trousse selon la revendication 15, et comprenant en outre un appareil d'arcade supérieure, et dans lequel l'appareil d'arcade supérieure est un tube à bandes incluant un corps définissant un passage et une bande configurée pour encercler au moins partiellement une molaire, généralement au-dessus de la hauteur du contour.
