Description

Facade system and corner element for such system
Field of the Invention
The invention relates to a facade system comprising a sill and two corner elements, wherein each corner element is arranged for supporting end portions of said sill in that each corner element comprises a channel having a bottom, a first and a second parallel sidewalls, and being open on at least two adjoining sides of said corner element.
Also, the invention relates to a corner element for a facade system as described above.
Background of the Invention
In facade systems, the window sill is usually mounted on a layer of plaster, which is directly applied on the insulation layer. Often the insulation in the lower part of the window seam is penetrated, due to the mounting of the window sill, thus leaving the window seam as a weak spot in the facade system, with a risk of water intrusion. Alternative solutions are illustrated in AT 4959 Ul, DE 202010007646 Ul and DE 8705165 Ul. AT 4959 Ul discloses a window sill attached to a window frame by means of a sealing arrangement, which engages the sill along its whole length via a clamping mechanism. The sealing arrangement is fastened to the window frame via a screw on its rear side. DE 202010007646 Ul discloses a window sill attached to a window frame by means of a sealing arrangement on each corner of the window frame. Each sealing arrangement is provided with a clamping mechanism, which fastens the sealing arrangement to the side edge of the window sill via a screw from its top. DE 8705165 Ul discloses a window sill adapted to be inserted into two side rails placed underneath the window frame, one side rail placed at each corner of the win- dow frame. Each side rail is fastened to the lateral wall via screws, while the window sill is directly fastened at its distal end to the window frame via a through-going screw from its top. However, AT 4959 Ul, DE 202010007646 Ul and DE 8705165 Ul do not describe a solution that allows fastening the sill to the facade in an easy and fast manner, without the need to fix it to the window frame by means of screws.
Hence, there is a need in the technical field of facade systems of overcoming the above-mentioned drawbacks of the state-of-the-art solutions. Scope of the Invention
The scope of the invention is to provide a system for fastening a sill to a facade in a simple, fast and waterproof manner. Moreover, the invention aims at making a sill replacement easier. Description of the Invention
The aforementioned scope of the invention are achieved by a facade system as described in the preamble of claim 1, wherein said corner element comprises three plates of which a first plate extends in a plane arranged under an angle in relation to a plane being perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of said channel and at a first end of said channel, which is an open end of said channel, a second plate extends parallel to said first sidewall and in extension of said first sidewall, and a third plate extends perpendicular to said second sidewall and at the free end of said second sidewall, wherein said first plate is adjoined to said second and third plates. Advantageously, the plates may be welded or glued to the corner element and to each other. Advantageously, the plates may extend for a length of 5 to 15 cm.
The advantage of the invention is that plaster is directly applied on the plates, thus the sill (e.g. a window sill) is quickly and firmly fastened to the facade, without the need of fixing each corner element to the window frame. In particular, the use of three plates is considered optimal for ensuring safety when the sill is finally mounted into the facade. Furthermore, the invention provides an easy dismounting of the sill, as the sill is not plastered in the channels of the corner elements. Consequently, the facade remains intact after releasing the sill. In an embodiment of the invention, said channel has a U-shaped cross-section. This embodiment has the advantage that the corner elements may more suitably fit the end portions of the sill.
In an embodiment of the invention, in use said channel has a slope downwards to- wards said first plate. Advantageously, said slope has an angle of 5° to 45°, preferably 5° to 15°, most preferably 7°. This embodiment has the advantage that in case of rain, for example, water may flow down the sill, externally the facade, thus providing a waterproof solution.
In an embodiment of the invention, said corner element has walls made of plastic fac- ing said channel and walls made of foam facing the outer side. This embodiment has the advantage that plastic makes the invention not as responsive to humidity as it would be if it was made with wood and not as responsive to temperature changes as it would be if it was made with metal. Moreover, the use of a foam shell surrounding the plastic core makes the invention easier and quicker to mount. Nevertheless, the entire corner element may be made of plastic and/or other materials having isolating properties.
In an embodiment of the invention, said channel has a height ranging from 5 to 50 mm, advantageously 12 mm or 22 mm or 40 mm. This embodiment has the advantage that any available sill may be accommodated in the corner elements.
In an embodiment of the invention, said channel has a length ranging from 20 to 60 cm. This embodiment has the advantage that the invention may cope with various thicknesses of the insulation layer.
In an embodiment of the invention, each plate comprises a perforated grid. Advantageously, said grid has perforations of size 4x4 mm. This embodiment has the advantage that the sill may be fastened very firmly and securely to the facade by applying plaster on the perforated grids.
In an embodiment of the invention, said corner element further comprises a flap extending parallel to said first sidewall and extending underneath said second plate. This embodiment has the advantage that the sill is fastened even more stably as plaster is applied on the perforated grid as well as the flap extending from the corner element.
In an embodiment of the invention, said channel has a rear wall. This embodiment has the advantage of making the invention extra waterproofed as even if water penetrates the channel, it will be unable to reach the insulation layer. In an embodiment of the invention, said plates comprise one or more of the following materials: fibre glass, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastic and polyvinyl chloride (PVC). This embodiment has the advantage that the plates are more flexible with respect, for example, to plates made of metal. Nevertheless, any other suitable material such as aluminium may be used.
Note that the invention may also be applied to light constructions such as STO Ventec or Knauf Aquapanels.
In an embodiment of the invention, glue is provided between said first sidewall and a bottom of said sill. Advantageously, a cement-based mortar such as tile adhesive may be used for slate sills, whereas acid-free silicone may be used for zinc sills. After plaster is applied to the plates of the corner element, a layer of glue may also be laid be- tween the plaster and the sill (also to the bottom of the corner element) so as to ensure an even more secure fastening of the sill to the corner element. This has the further advantage that the invention becomes independent from the height and the material of the sill (e.g., zinc sills tend to expand or shrink according to temperature changes); something that is not considered by the prior art.
In an embodiment of the invention, said first sidewall comprises a boundary element being positioned in the middle of said first sidewall extending for the entire length of said first sidewall and being parallel to said longitudinal axis of said channel. This embodiment ensures that even if some water is able to filtrate, said boundary element blocks it and leads it out over the front of the corner element. Such element may be made of plastic with the dimensions 2x2 mm [height, width] . Finally, it may be produced altogether with the corner element as well as successively attached to that, e.g. by means of glue. Also, the aforementioned scope of the invention is achieved by a corner element as described in the preamble of claim 10, wherein said corner element comprises three plates of which a first plate extends in a plane arranged under an angle in relation to a plane being perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of said channel and at a first end of said channel, which is an open end of said channel, a second plate extends parallel to said first sidewall and in extension of said first sidewall, and a third plate extends perpendicular to said second sidewall and at the free end of said second sidewall, wherein said first plate is adjoined to said second and third plates.
In the following, the invention is described by means of drawings illustrating non- limiting examples of a facade system and a corner element for such system.
Description of the Drawings
FIG. l: An example of facade system according to the invention.
FIG.2: Perspective view of a corner element with three perforated grids.
FIG.3: Perspective view of a corner element with a flap.
FIG.4: Perspective view of a comer element wherein the first sidewall comprises a boundary element FIGs.5A-B: Front view of a corner element adapted to support sills of different thickness. FIG.6: Side view of a corner element. Preferred Embodiments of the Invention
FIG. l illustrates a facade system 1 comprising a sill 2 and two corner elements 3, 4. Basically, the corner elements 3, 4 are placed in a hole in the wall, where the sill 2 shall be positioned. Plaster is applied to the gratings 9, 10, 11 (grating 10 is not visible in FIG.l - ref. FIG.2) to fixate the corner elements 3, 4 in the wall. The sill 2 is then positioned in the facade by pushing its end portions inside the channel 5 (not visible in FIG. l - ref. FIG.2) of the corner elements 3, 4. Optionally, a layer of glue is laid in the channels 5 under the sill 2 or under the whole sill 2, so as to even more stably fixate the sill 2 in the wall. FIG.2 illustrates a corner element 1 for a facade system according to the invention. The corner element 3 is arranged for supporting end portions of the sill 2 as it comprises a channel 5 having a bottom 6, a rear wall 13, a first and second parallel side- walls 7, 8, and being open on two adjoining sides of the corner element 3. The channel 5 has a slope of 7° downwards towards the first plate 9. The corner element 3 further comprises three perforated grids 9, 10, 11. The first grid 9 extends in a plane arranged under an angle in relation to a plane being perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the channel 5 and at a first end of the channel 5, which is an open end of the channel 5. The second grid 10 extends parallel to the first sidewall 7 and in extension of the first sidewall 7. The third grid 11 extends perpendicular to the second sidewall 8 and at the free end of the second sidewall 8. The first grid 9 is adjoined to the second and third grids 10, 11.
FIG.3 shows a close up of the corner element 3 in FIG.2 (the perforated grids are not shown). In particular, the corner element 3 comprises a flap 12 extending parallel to the first sidewall 7 and extending underneath the second grid 10. Moreover, the corner element 3 has walls (coloured in black) made of plastic facing said channel 5 and walls (coloured in grey) made of foam facing the outer side. Finally, note that the front end of the channel 5 extends with respect to the front side of the corner element 1. This extension may be used as an edge for the plaster and permits a better closure.
FIG.4 shows the same corner element 3 as in FIG.3, wherein the first sidewall 7 com- prises a boundary element 14 positioned approximately in the middle of the first side- wall 7 (e.g. it may be positioned with a shift of a few centimetres with respect to the middle of the first sidewall 7) extending for approximately the entire length of the first sidewall 7 (e.g. it may be a few centimetres shorter on each side as compared to the first sidewall 7) and being parallel to the longitudinal axis of the channel 5. Such ele- ment 14 (coloured in black) may be made of plastic.
FIG.s 5A-B show a corner element 3 whose mouth (i.e., the detail encircled and referred to with the letter B) has different heights h such that the corner element 3 can support sills 2 of different thickness. The first and the second sidewalls 7, 8 have the same width wj = W2 = w, which can range from 15 to 50 mm. Nevertheless, the first sidewall 7 may have a width wi greater than the width W2 of the second sidewall 8 (e.g., wi <= 100 mm). Advantageously, the design of the gratings 9, 10, 11 (grating 11 is not visible in FIG.s 5A-B - ref. FIG.6) make the latter more durable with respect to the gratings 9, 10, 11 in FIG.2.
By comparing FIG.6 to FIG.s 2-4, it is noticeable that the corner element 3 in FIG.6 does not show any walls (either coloured in black or in grey) underneath the first sidewall 7. This embodiment has the advantage that it is easier and faster to mount the corner elements 3,4.
