  1. A machine (2) having a clearing chain (1) for transporting ballast (5) of a track bed (3), consisting of a multitude of chain links articulatedly connected to one another, wherein the clearing chain (1) - designed for rotation in a rotation plane (7) arranged inclined to a bedding plane (8) - comprises a transverse channel (9) positioned during working operations in an intersection line of the bedding- and rotation planes (8,7) and provided for housing the clearing chain (1), the transverse channel (9) being connected to longitudinal channels (12) by a channel joint (10) in each case, wherein the transverse channel (9) is composed of a center section (14) and two end sections (16), the latter adjoining the center section (14) in each case and being detachable by means of a coupling (15), characterized in that each end section (16) is pivotable relative to the abutting longitudinal channel (12) in the rotation plane (7) in an angle α of at least 60° from an operating position into a transfer position.
  2. A machine according to claim 1, characterized in that a blocking device (17) for blocking the pivoting motion in the transfer position is associated with each end section (16).
  3. A machine according to claim 2, characterized in that a monitoring device (23), connected to a central control device, for displaying the blocking position is associated with the blocking device (17).
  4. A method of placing into operation a machine according to claim 1, characterized by the following features:
    a) each end section (16) is pivoted into its transfer position,
    b) prior to lowering the longitudinal channels (12) into the working position, a group of adjacent sleepers (18) - after loosening of rail fastening means - is shifted in a longitudinal rail direction to create a sleeper gap (19),
    c) the two longitudinal channels (12) are pivoted outward from a track center in a transverse direction of the track within an allowable clearance profile (21) and then lowered while guiding the end sections 16 through the sleeper gap 19, after which the end sections (16) are pivoted into an operating position and connected to the center section (14).
