Description

Title: Rifle Stock
Technical field of the invention
This invention relates to a stock for hunting rifles. Background to the invention It is well known that rifles produce recoil when fired and the larger the calibre, the more forceful the recoil. One effect of recoil is the rapid upward movement of the muzzle, called muzzle climb or muzzle jump. High muzzle climb results in the loss of view of the target, loss of control of the rifle, delays recovery time for a follow up shot, possible injuries, loss of confidence and in some cases flinching .
It is an object of the invention to provide a hunting rifle stock which eliminates muzzle climb, lowers the potential for injuries, allow for quick, comfortable, stable and consistent positioning of the rifle to aim, which stocks can be used for both open sight and scoped rifles.
In this specification, it will be understood that there are generally two steps required to shoot accurately with a rifle. The first step is to aim. During aiming the rifle stock is positioned by the shooter to enable him to look through the sights at the target. It is important to be able to position the rifle stock consistently in the same way every time to have the sights aligned with a shooter's eye. The next step is to sight. This is when the sights of the rifle are placed on the exact point on the target before firing the rifle. Further in this specification a rifle stock will be understood to include the features as shown in Figure 1. General description of the invention
According to the invention there is provided a hunting rifle stock, wherein:
the heel of the butt is level or below the bore axis with a measurement of up to 11 mm below; and
the comb is at a downward angle out of the parallel with the bore axis from the heel to the nose of the stock.
The butt, butt plate or the recoil pad of the stock may preferably be square to the bore axis to a forward tilt of the heel relative to the toe between 3 to 5 degrees. The comb may preferably drop with between 45 - 50mm.
It will be appreciated the high heel lowers muzzle jump and that the downward angle of the comb lowers the risk of injury since the rifle fitted with a stock in accordance with the invention will move back in line with the bore axis and will then move away from a shooters cheek. In addition, the parallax with a telescope rifle can be minimised by a person by moving his cheek along the comb to place his eye at the correct level to have a straight line of sigh through the telescope. The downward angle of the comb also allows the correct positioning of a person's head for a telescope and an open sight.
The stock also includes a thumb index between the neck and grip area to enable a person to consistently position his hand in the same and correct place for aiming with a positive grip or first natural position of hand closed around trigger allowing the trigger finger to move independently improving accuracy.
The positioning and shape of the heel, comb and neck and grip area of the rifle butt assists a person to create a stable locked triangular hold onto the rifle and recoil forces force the person together with the rifle backwards without the rifle scope hitting the person's eye, yet allowing excellent gun control and follow through.
The butt may have a width of between 45 - 50mm
The grip of the stock may preferably be curved to bring the hand and index finger of a shooter closer to the trigger and dimensioned to allow a relatively closed and strong grip for better trigger control. The angle of the grip is selected to allow a shooter to straighten his wrists to allow recoil to be transferred through the shooters arm. The grip may preferably also include a swollen area or bulge shaped to fit into the palm of the gripping hand for consistent aiming.
The invention also extends to a rifle fitted with a stock, in accordance with the invention.
Detailed description of the invention
The invention is now described by way of example with reference to the accompanying illustrations.
In the illustrations:
Figure 1 shows a left side view of a hunting rifle stock, in accordance with the invention;
Figure 2 shows a right side view of the hunting rifle stock; and
Figure 3 shows details of a preferred design.
Referring now to the illustrations of the hunting rifle stock, which is generally indicated by reference number 0, the heel 12 of the butt is level with the bore axis 14 and the comb 16 is at a downward angle or slightly forward out of the parallel with the bore axis from the heel to the nose 18 of the stock. The heel 12 of the butt is slightly forward of the toe 20. The stock also includes a thumb index 22 between the neck 24 and grip 26 area to enable a person to consistently position his hand in the same and correct place for aiming. The butt 10 has a width of 45 - 50mm. The grip 26 of the stock is curved as shown to bring the hand and index finger of a shooter closer to the trigger (not shown) and dimensioned to allow a relatively closed grip and strong for better trigger control. The angle of the grip 26 is selected to allow a shooter to straighten his wrists to allow recoil to be transferred through the shooters arm. The grip 26 also includes a swollen area to fit into the palm of the gripping hand for consistent aiming with the hand closed around trigger allowing the finger to move independently helping with accuracy. The positioning and shape of the heel 12, comb 16 and neck 18 and grip 26 area of the rifle butt assists a person to create a stable locked triangular hold onto the rifle and recoil forces force the person together with the rifle backwards without the rifle scope hitting the person's eye, yet allowing excellent gun control and follow through.
It shall be understood that the example is provided for illustrating the invention further and to assist a person skilled in the art with understanding the invention and is not meant to be construed as unduly limiting the reasonable scope of the invention.
