Definitions
- This invention relates to refrigerant recovery and recharge device. Background of the invention
- Refrigeration equipments are widely used in many applications including air conditioning systems, refrigerators and the like. These refrigeration equipments use one or a combination of refrigerants such as water, oils, industrial refrigerants and the like.
- refrigerants such as water, oils, industrial refrigerants and the like.
- the principle of working principle of the refrigeration equipment is such that the refrigerant absorbs heat while passing through various components of the refrigeration equipment. This cools the air around the refrigeration equipment and the cool air is then blown to the area or room where the refrigeration equipment is installed.
- refrigerant recovery and recharge device For the purpose of recovering the refrigerant and recharging the refrigerant a refrigerant recovery and recharge device is used.
- the refrigerant recovery device is usually a stand alone device which is connected to the refrigeration equipment while the refrigeration equipment is being serviced.
- the refrigerant recovery device comprises at least, a valve block, a compressor and a tank.
- the valve block comprises valves, which are usually solenoid valves. The valves in the valve block can be switched from a closed position to an open position to establish a connection between the refrigerant recovery device and the refrigeration equipment.
- the compressor is a device which is capable of recovering the refrigerant from the refrigeration equipment and vapours based on the pressure difference between refrigeration equipment and the refrigerant recovery and recharge device.
- the tank is used to store the recovered refrigerant.
- the refrigeration equipment is usually vacuum sealed, thus no air is allowed to enter the refrigeration equipment. However, it is possible that due to a leak or some damage to the refrigeration equipment, air enters the refrigeration equipment. If air enters the refrigeration equipment the pressure in the refrigeration equipment would increase. If the pressure in the refrigeration equipment increases, then the difference in pressure between the refrigeration equipment refrigerant recovery and recharge device reduces. The reduced pressure difference would lead to incomplete recovery of the refrigerant. Thus the contaminated refrigerant will not be recovered from the refrigeration equipment. This reduces the efficiency of the refrigeration equipment to cool.
- the invention as claimed in the independent claims has the following advantages.
- the method to operate the refrigerant recovery and recharge device is able to indicate that only air is being recovered and hence the recovery should be stopped immediately. By preventing only air from the recovered it is possible to keep a check on the increase in pressure and temperature along the refrigerant recovery path of the refrigerant recovery and recharge device. By providing an indication of the increase in pressure and temperature it is possible to avoid any damage to the refrigeration equipment and to the refrigerant recovery and recharge device. This in turn would increase the life and efficiency of the refrigeration equipment and refrigerant recovery and recharge device.
- Another advantage of this method of operating a refrigerant recovery and recharge device is that, the device is able to give an indication of a leak either in the refrigeration equipment or the refrigerant recovery and recharge device or the refrigerant recovery path, as the steep and sudden rise in pressure is an indication that air has entered a vacuum sealed refrigeration equipment and hence there is a leak.
- Figure 1 illustrates a flowchart representing a method to operate a refrigerant recovery and recharge device.
- FIG 1 illustrates a flowchart representing a method to operate a refrigerant recovery and recharge device.
- the refrigerant recovery and recharge device is connected to refrigeration equipment.
- a valve block in the refrigerant recovery and recharge device establishes a connection between the two.
- Step 10 represents the step of starting the refrigerant recovery process. In the refrigerant recovery process the compressor of the refrigerant recovery and recharge device is switched on.
- Step 12 represents the step of a pressure sensor continuously monitoring the pressure along the refrigerant recovery path in the refrigerant recovery and recharge device.
- Step 14 represents the step of a temperature sensor continuously monitoring the temperature along the refrigerant recovery path in the refrigerant recovery and recharge device.
- Step 16 represents the step of comparing the monitored pressure and temperature with the threshold values of pressure and temperature allowable in the recovery path.
- Step 18 represents the step of indicating using an audio or visual indication to the operator of the refrigerant recovery and recharge device to stop recovery method immediately before any damage is caused.
- the audio or visual indication is indicative that only air is being recovered which has entered the refrigeration equipment or the refrigeration recovery and recharge device due to leak either in the refrigeration equipment or the refrigerant recovery path.
- the weight of the tank in the refrigerant recovery and recharge device is continuously monitored. The working principle of this method is as follows. When the recovery method is started there will be a constant increase temperature and pressure and there will no increase in weight of the tank in the refrigerant recovery and recharge device. No increase in weight of the tank is indicative that no refrigerant is being recovered but there is a continuous increase in temperature and pressure.
- an audio or visual indication is provided to the operator of the refrigerant recovery and recharge device to stop the operation of the refrigerant recovery and recharge device.
- the audio or visual indication is indicative that only air is being recovered which has entered the refrigeration equipment or the refrigeration recovery and recharge device due to leak either in the refrigeration equipment or the refrigerant recovery path.
- the refrigerant recovery and recharge device used to recover refrigerant from the refrigeration equipment comprises a pressure sensor located in the refrigerant recovery path adapted means to continuously monitors the increase in pressure in the refrigerant recovery path. There is also provided in the refrigerant recovery path a temperature sensor which continuously monitors the temperature in the refrigerant recovery path.
- a means to indicate an error condition in the refrigeration equipment or the refrigerant recovery and recharge device is provided in the refrigerant recovery and recharge device.
- the means to indicate an error is an audio or visual means. If the pressure increases beyond a limit the audio or visual means provide an indication of an error condition in the refrigeration equipment or the refrigerant recovery and recharge device.
- the refrigerant recovery and recharge device comprises a weighing scale to measure the quantity of refrigerant recovered during the recovery of the refrigerant.
- the indication from the weighing scale, the pressure sensor and the temperature sensor is used to indicate an error condition in the refrigerant equipment or the refrigerant recovery and recharge device.
