Description

The invention relates to a mouthpiece covering paper for a smoking article.

Five essential parts of a common filter cigarette are the tobacco rod, this wrapping cigarette paper, the filter, the filter wrap paper and the tipping paper.

The tipping paper, often referred to as "tipping paper" or "tipping" for short, wraps around the filter and filter wrap paper. It is that part of the filter cigarette which is touched by the lips of the cigarette smoking person when smoking the filter cigarette. Usually, the mouthpiece covering paper also protrudes slightly in the longitudinal direction of the tobacco cigarette in the longitudinal region of the tobacco rod, envelops the cigarette paper there and is adhesively bonded thereto. By making this bond filter part and tobacco rod part are mechanically connected in the cigarette machine. The tipping paper is in most cases actually a paper, but it can also be a film or a foil. In the case of forming the tipping paper as a film or foil, it may for example consist of cellulose hydrate.

At the end close to the tobacco rod mouthpiece paper is usually carried out somewhat perforated, so that when sucking on the cigarette air from the environment enters the filter and there mixed with the coming out of the tobacco rod smoke flow, whereby the smoke values are changed advantageous.

Usually, the tipping paper has a visually appealing print. Often this print reminds of cork or tobacco. There are also mouthpiece covering papers are used, which in addition to the optical printing a coating of substances or impregnation with substances that cause one or more sensory perceptions such as smell, taste, cold (freshness) or heat (sharpness) when smoking. For example will be in the WO 2006128551 A1 proposed to apply a flavor with the aid of an inkjet printer, for example, on the tipping paper.

In the AT 260756 B It is proposed to provide tipping paper with a coating layer containing fine powder of tropical nut shells to mimic the surface finish of natural cork.

In the DE 3411511 C2 It is proposed to equip the tipping paper with a substance that changes its color permanently due to increased temperature. To effect the color change, the tipping paper is stamped with a heated die having a surface texture, so that a structure is also embossed on the tipping paper. Between the tipping paper and the actual filter is usually the filter paper whose main function is to mechanically fix the material or material components of the filter, at least until everything is held together by the tipping paper which is first applied in the cigarette machine. In the DE 3005793 C2 It is proposed the filter wrapper paper, which ultimately represents an intermediate layer of the finished cigarette to form for reasons of air permeability of a very highly porous paper and to print it with a very fine grid of textured paint. The textured paint improves the otherwise disturbingly low mechanical stability of the highly porous paper. By applying the textured paint only as a fine grid, it does not reduce the desired high air permeability. In the DE 3005793 C2 is proposed as a suitable structural paint, a hot-melt plastic adhesive.

A textured paint in the sense of this description is a lacquer with which a fine grid of a tangibly raised structure can be printed on a surface, for example 5 to 30 lines lying side by side per cm can be printed for it protrude from non-printed surface areas by 10 microns to 30 microns. However, finer structures are also printable, for example with 100 lines lying side by side per cm.

Textured paint can be used to create tactile prints; Applications include printing Braille, improving bill recognition, and improving the haptic impact of packaging. The latter is used for example in the WO 2011/001200 A1 proposed.

Another important application of structural paints relates to changing the friction properties of a surface; Depending on the target, either the lubricity or the coefficient of friction can be increased by selecting the appropriate lacquer material.

In the DE 2927893 C2 It is proposed that the cigarette paper with the help of a textured paint, which contains tobacco powder with a structure to print so that it looks as similar as possible to a tobacco leaf in appearance and feel.

Although there are already many ways to make mouthpiece covering papers visually and equip them with funds for other than optical sensory impressions advantageous. In the selection of applicable substances and states of substances, however, it is very limited. A significant limitation arises from the fact that the tipping paper is subject to considerable frictional and compressive loads during the manufacture and packaging of filter cigarettes. Other restrictions arise from environmental influences, such as in particular high humidity, which can affect the finished product functional substances unfavorable.

The primary object of the present invention is to mitigate the limitations mentioned in the previous paragraph and thus to expand the choices of substances and conditions of substances that can be used to influence the properties of tipping paper.

For solving the problem, it is proposed to provide the mouthpiece covering paper with localized printing with textured paint with raised surface areas. In an advantageous further development, further substances are applied to the non-raised areas of the tipping paper which, if at all, do not apply as much to the tipping paper as the structured lacquer.

In the finished state, the surface of the tipping paper thus represents a landscape, which has levels and mountains towering from them, wherein on the levels of substances such as dyes or fragrances are applied and wherein the mountains, these levels superior, consist of hardened textured paint.

The most important function of the elevations formed by hardened textured lacquer is that of protecting the substances applied to the lower surface areas. This protective function is achieved by hard bodies which abut or slide on the tipping paper predominantly or exclusively come into contact only with the knobs of the structured lacquer elevations and not with the surface areas therebetween. As a result, contact-sensitive substances can also be obtained in the undamaged state for a long time at the intermediate surface areas.

According to Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 is one side of the mouthpiece covering paper 1 by applying textured paint with elevations 3, 13 provided.

For reasons of clarity, the illustrations form in accordance with Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 the reality is not true to scale. The height of the elevations formed from textured paint 3, 13 is shown disproportionately stretched. Contrary to what is actually the case in reality, the partial surfaces of the surface of the elevations 3, 13 formed from textured lacquer are drawn exclusively as flat surfaces which adjoin neighboring surfaces without any rounding off.

In the example according to Fig. 1 is formed by textured paint a grid of island-like spaced elevations with a cross-shaped base. The area not covered with textured paint 2 is not divided into individual separate sub-areas.

In the example according to Fig. 2 The elevations 13, which consist of structural paint, form a grid of intersecting lines which pass through many grid periods, between which rectangular areas 2 are enclosed, to which no textured paint is applied.

As a result of the elevations formed from structured lacquer, the deeper surface areas 2 are protected from contact by blunt objects, since these objects abut the combs of the elevations 3, 13. The elevations 3, 13 thus act as spacers.

Due to this spacer function 2 coatings are applicable for the protected deep surface areas, which previously were not applicable because of their high sensitivity to mechanical damage or generally against contact. For example, this means:
  • It is now also possible to apply lacquers to the surfaces 2 which have relatively large color pigments which protrude from the polymer matrix of the lacquer. So far, the use of such paints - with which very advantageous optical effects can be achieved - hardly possible because the above pigments were rubbed off by friction of the tipping paper 1 on itself and on machine parts in the manufacture and packaging of cigarettes.
  • In general, porous, slightly brittle, abrasion-sensitive layers can now be applied to the surfaces 2 or the surface 2 can be soaked.
  • The surfaces 2 can be provided with substances from which grow small crystals to the surface during a drying process. These crystals can look visually beneficial and they can taste good. For example, the crystals may consist predominantly of salt or sugar.
  • It is the first time a variety of coatings and impregnations for the surfaces 2 applicable, which consist of a thermosetting matrix and enclosed encapsulated substances with sensory effect, the encapsulated substances with sensory effect are released only by ambient conditions occurring. Previously, layers in which substances with sensory effect contained in encapsulated form were mechanically too sensitive for this application. Note: The term "sensory effect substance" in this document refers to substances such as flavorings (perceptible by the sense of taste), fragrances (perceptible by the sense of smell), substances that are sensible as cold (freshness) or heat or other stimulants or substances that affect the senses from Modify odors, for example, neutralize or absorb, collectively referred to.
  • The surfaces 2 can now also be provided with substances which - in addition to other desired functions - remain pasty or gel or can and which can feel sticky or greasy with direct contact. So far, such substances could not be used, because then cigarettes would be glued together. In particular, coating substances or impregnating substances (such as, for example, sugars or citric acid) are thus for the first time readily applicable, which become sticky on prolonged storage at high atmospheric humidity.
  • It can also powder, so small particles such as flakes, spice crystals, plant dusts, etc. are applied to the surface 2, wherein a plurality of these particles are present together as powder or dust or the like and are not surrounded by a liquid, curable matrix. So far, this was not meaningful, because the particles would have been rubbed off again before the cigarette had been consumed.
The particles of the powder can be wholly or largely applied to the surface 2 without the use of binder.
Of course you can also print the area 2 first with a thin layer of binder and then apply powder on the not yet cured binder. The particles are then in contact only to a small extent with their surface with binder.
This means can be applied to the mouthpiece covering paper, which are intended to be transmitted by contact with the lips or the fingers of the smoking person to the lips or fingers of this person. This is especially interesting for skin-care substances and for substances that help to avoid unpleasant odors (eg on the fingers).

In addition to the protective function for coatings or impregnations of the lower-lying surface regions 2 of the tipping paper 1, the structured elevations 3, 13 can be used to obtain further advantages:
  • Before the tipping paper 1 is processed on the cigarette machine, it is provided with various imprints and possibly impregnations. Between the individual processing steps, the tipping paper 1 is in the form of rolls. From these roles, solvents that originate from the various printing and impregnation must evaporate. Due to the presence of structured elevations 3, 13 this evaporation is faster than without these surveys, because these surveys cause due to their spacer function better ventilation of the paper. It can thus be saved so intermediate storage times. In this connection, an arrangement of local isolated elevations 3 (FIG. Fig. 1 ) more advantageous than elevations 13, which form a continuous network ( Fig. 2 ).

The structured elevations, which should preferably be separated from one another in an island-like manner, can not only accelerate the evaporation of substances to be removed, but conversely, the contact of desired substances, which are in the form of gas, steam, aerosol or powder and / or combinations from being accelerated with the tipping paper while this tipping paper is stored as a roll in an environment enriched with the gas phase in question. By means of this contact, for example, some substances which can be handled well as vapor phase and have a sensory effect can be introduced very gently into the mouthpiece covering paper. But you can also substances that are already in or on the mouthpiece covering paper, by gentle reaction with the mouthpiece covering paper surrounding gas phase of a substance in the sense of "mature let" specifically change. To contact between To intensify tipping paper and gas phase, the gas phase can be moved, for example by a blower.

If a structure 3 of elevations on that side of the tipping paper 1 is applied, which is located on the finished cigarette on the filter wrapper paper, so it is achieved that more air between tipping paper 1 and filter wrapper can flow. This is helpful for setting desired smoke values, which is done to a high degree by adding fresh air to the smoke stream coming from the tobacco rod in the filter. Also in this context is an arrangement of separate local elevations 3 ( Fig. 1 ) more advantageous than elevations 13, which form a continuous network ( Fig. 2 ).

By structured elevations 3, 13, the haptic sensation when touching a cigarette can be improved. In particular, it can be made easier to remove a cigarette from a full packet of cigarettes.

Fig. 3 shows that part of a cigarette packaging machine on which a very large frictional stress on the tipping paper of a cigarette occurs. For the packaging of cigarettes 4 in a cigarette pack, the cigarettes 4 to be introduced into the pack are moved in their longitudinal direction along a narrowing conveying channel 5. The cigarettes 4 are pressed against each other more and more and rub against the walls of the conveyor channel 5. This rubbing is done mainly with the mouthpiece covering paper 1 of the cigarettes, since this comprises the opposite to the tobacco rod part firmer filter part of the cigarette 4. By providing the mouthpiece covering paper 1 on its outer side according to the invention with a structure of elevations 3, 13, 23 of hardened textured paint, the surface areas of the mouthpiece covering paper 1 lying between these elevations are spared from friction with the walls of the conveying channel 5.

For this application, it is advantageous if the elevations 23 are formed by a paint material, which has the lowest possible friction coefficient against metal in the cured state.

At the cigarette machine, a piece of tipping paper is wrapped around the filter part of the cigarette. The edges of the tipping paper overlapping in the circumferential direction of the cigarette are glued together. In the gluing process, a certain minimum adhesion between the overlapping edges of the tipping paper must be achieved very quickly, since otherwise the cycle time of the cigarette machine is reduced. The minimum adhesion is achieved more quickly if the water absorption capacity of the bodies to be bonded is accelerated and / or if the bodies to be bonded facilitate mechanical anchoring by means of parts projecting from the surface. The elevations 3, 13, 23 represent such protruding parts. Preferably, they contain a substance which absorbs water well. The use of structured elevations 3, 13, 23 as an aid in glueing is then crucially important and advantageous if the tipping paper used is not a true paper but a film, for example of cellulose hydrate.

Especially in the tobacco rod side half of the mouthpiece covering paper this is usually carried out somewhat perforated, so that when sucking on the cigarette air from the environment enters the filter and there mixed with the coming out of the tobacco rod smoke flow, whereby the smoke values are advantageously changed. If the tipping paper is not a real paper but a film, experience shows that the perforation - which is usually accomplished by a laser - forms a small ridge rising from the plane of the tipping paper at the edge of the individual perforations. This burr then interferes very strongly when the tipping paper even before processing in the cigarette machine to a reel with many individual winding layers to be wound. In fact, in the case of the individual winding layers, the surface areas of a winding layer to which said burrs are located are located exactly on such surface layers of the next inner winding on which said burrs are located. Ultimately, this causes that by the winding at the surface areas of the mouthpiece covering paper, to which the perforation holes are located, much higher tensile stresses occur than at surface areas where there are no perforation holes. The effect increases with increasing number of turns so much that thereby the maximum possible number of turns is distractingly limited. As a makeshift you wound either only reels with relatively small number of turns, or you make the perforation ago in the cigarette machine ago, namely, when the mouthpiece covering paper is no longer wound after perforation to a reel. Both aids have disadvantages. The first possibility causes an undesirable increase in the logistical effort. The second possibility causes in some types and strengths of trained as a film mouthpiece covering papers a disturbing limitation of the maximum speed with which the cigarette machines can work.

By forming the sheet-formed mouthpiece covering paper having a structure of protrusions 3, 13, 23 of hardened paint, those protrusions formed by the perforation as a ridge around the perforation openings are not significant in winding the mouthpiece covering paper into a reel. The tensile force on the tipping paper required for winding is thereby better divided evenly over a larger width of the tipping material. It can thereby be formed bobbins with higher number of turns, without causing damage to the perforation zones.

The effect is particularly pronounced when perforation holes are applied only to those surface areas 2 of the foil-shaped mouthpiece covering paper which lie between the elevations 3, 13, 23.

For the protective functions discussed, it is important that the elevations 3, 13, 23 protrude from hardened textured paint in the direction normal to the level of the mouthpiece covering paper 1 over the lying between individual surveys, not provided with textured surface areas 2 of the mouthpiece covering paper 1. From geometrical considerations it is immediately apparent that the projections should protrude more if the distance between them increases and if the surface on which they are applied is more convexly curved. The feelability of structured coatings begins at a height of the coating of about 5 to 15 microns.

As a material of the structural paint are especially those types of paint, which mainly apply to the surfaces contacted with it and less those that are mainly absorbed. Many structural coatings are known in the art.

As a method for applying textured paint on the tipping base paper are especially screen printing in particular rotary screen printing and gravure, especially rotary gravure gravure. Rotary screen printing and web gravure gravure printing are well suited for paper tapes. Web gravure gravure printing makes the fastest possible printing possible for the present application.

In gravure printing, a printing plate whose surface has recesses wetted with lacquer, then scraped by a doctor blade and then brought into contact with the surface to be printed, with a part of the remaining in the wells lacquer adhering to the surface to be printed. In web-fed gravure printing, the printing form is a roller, the so-called printing roller. This rotates about a horizontal axis and is arranged to be moves with its lower lateral surface area through a coating bath and touches with its upper lateral surface area the paper to be printed, which is moved at the peripheral speed of the pressure roller. The lateral surface of the pressure roller has recesses. In the paint bath, the lateral surface of the pressure roller is wetted with paint. Excess paint raised from the paint bath is scraped from the surface of the printing roll by a squeegee; From the remaining, arranged in the wells paint part is transferred to the paper upon contact with the paper to be printed. The said depressions on the lateral surface of the pressure roller are about 30 μm to 50 μm deep in the case of customary printing on mouthpiece covering paper. For the printing of tipping paper for the production of a lacquer structure according to the invention, the depressions must be at least about 20 μm deep (if the surface regions 2 are not printed by an applied pressure and if the printed structures are relatively fine) and can be at most about 240 μm deep. Very good results are achieved when the depth is between 100 μm to 150 μm.

It should be noted that the printed structures need not extend in uniform density over the entire surface of one side of the tipping paper. For example, more and / or differently shaped elevations may be attached to those areas which are primarily touched by the fingers of the person smoking, rather than to those areas which are primarily touched by the lips of the person smoking.

The non-raised surface areas 2 of the mouthpiece covering paper can also be treated differently on different areas of the mouthpiece covering paper. For example, substances can be predominantly applied to that part of the tipping paper which is closer to the tobacco rod on the finished cigarette and thus will be touched predominantly by the fingers of the person smoking the cigarette help to avoid disturbing smell on the fingers. Towards the open end of the filter part of the cigarette, the surface areas 2 of the mouthpiece covering paper should be provided with flavoring agents or with a lip-care substance.
