Le galet 16 est monté à rotation libre sur un deuxième axe 19 des bras 17, et l'intérieur du galet 16 renferme un accouplement centrifuge (non représenté) destiné à occuper une position débrayée ou une position embrayé en fonction de la vitesse ou de l'accélération du galet 16 bloqueur. Lors de l'utilisation normale de montée ou de descente, l'accouplement centrifuge se trouve en position débrayée, et le galet 16 suit la progression de la personne sans intervention manuelle de déblocage du système de retenue. En cas de chute, le blocage intervient automatiquement lors du passage de l'accouplement vers la position embrayée, entraînant une forte pression du galet contre la corde 12 qui stoppe la chute.
