Description
- The present invention relates to an embedded hinge for a reversible type door.
- In particular the present invention relates to a pintle element and a seat holder insert which form an embedded hinge for a reversible door, a door suitable for being used with such hinge and a method of fitting such reversible door by means of such embedded hinge.
- In the present description and in the subsequent claims the term "embedded hinge" indicates a hinge at least partially embedded in a door, that is, in the panel or in the frame of the door.
- The term "reversible door" indicates a door suitable for being fitted so as to open on the right or so as to open on the left and the opening direction of which (right or left) may be decided at the moment of fitting.
- Doors of this type have been known of for many years. The first reversible doors invented had the disadvantage of requiring long and laborious assembly operations of the panel to the rim of the frame, as well as long and laborious operations for changing the direction of opening.
- To try and overcome such drawbacks pintle holder brackets with removable pintles were made. These have only partially overcome the drawback described above, entailing moreover aesthetic and economic disadvantages.
- A further known method of overcoming such disadvantages describes a reversible door combination comprising a frame and a panel joined to it by means of an embedded hinge fitted with a pintle housed in one or other of two seats extending in the thickness of the panel. In such latter solution at least one access passage of the pintle to the seats open onto it and onto the outside of the panel, as well as means of removably holding the pintle in the seats are also envisaged.
- Such solution despite overcoming the drawback of the long and laborious operations of fitting and removing the doors, has the drawback of requiring particular predispositions on the frame with consequent elevated manufacturing and storage costs as well as limited versatility, due to the fact that special frames need to be produced for such doors.
- Such prior method has, in addition application limitations in that it can only be used in the case of doors without a ledge. It also has the intrinsic drawbacks of ledge-free doors, that is to say the poor noise and light insulation.
- Lastly, such prior method has the drawback of not permitting a perfect closure of the door on the floor. In other words, such prior method, envisaging two seats which extend into the thickness of the door, does not permit fitting of the panel in a vertical sliding manner. In other words, such prior method entails a gap between the panel and the floor, with consequent disadvantages as regards the insulation of the rooms which the door connects.
- The purpose of the present invention is therefore to make available a pintle element for an embedded hinge, a seat holder insert for an embedded hinge and an embedded hinge, which makes it possible to overcome the aforementioned problems of lengthy and laborious assembly, imperfect appearance, imprecise assembly, poor insulation, high costs and limited range of application.
- A further purpose of the present invention is to make available a reversible door which is economical, simple to fit and which achieves a high level of insulation.
- A further purpose of the present invention is to make available a method of fitting a door with an embedded hinge which is simple, fast, accurate, economical and versatile.
- A further purpose of the present invention is to make available a pintle element, a seat holder insert, an embedded hinge, a reversible door and a method of fitting such door which makes it possible to avoid special predispositions on the frame, that is to say machining which makes such frames specific for a sole application.
- These and other purposes are achieved by means of a pintle element for an embedded hinge for reversible doors comprising at least one panel and one frame, said frame being composed of a cross-member and a pair of uprights, said pintle element being suitable for being fitted at one end of an upright and comprising:
- a pin extending in a longitudinal direction,
- a support plug of the pin extending perpendicular to the axis of the pin, and
- an appendage formed of at least one first abutment surface on an upright, suitable for preventing translations of the pintle element in an orthogonal direction during assembly, a second abutment surface on the same upright, suitable for preventing translations of the pintle element in a transversal direction during assembly, and a third abutment surface on the cross-member, suitable for preventing translations of the pintle element in a longitudinal direction during assembly.
- In the present context and in the subsequent claims, the longitudinal and transversal directions refer to the directions of the axes of the panel of the door, save as indicated otherwise. Moreover, the term orthogonal direction is taken to mean the direction orthogonal to said longitudinal and transversal directions.
- Such directions are indicated in
figure 1 . - A pintle element, as described above, makes it possible to overcome the aforementioned problems.
- In particular the presence of at least one first and one second abutment surface on an upright, and a third abutment surface on a cross-member, as described above, makes it possible to rapidly and accurately identify the assembly positions of the pintle element, without requiring special predispositions on the frame. It therefore proves versatile, in other words applicable to any frame of the prior type.
- It also proves economical, makes it possible to decide the direction of opening at the moment of fitting and avoids storage costs in that it does not require dedicated frames.
- According to preferred embodiments, said first abutment surface and said second abutment surface are surfaces of respective elements orthogonal and integral with each other.
- Such embodiments permit very fast and precise positioning of the pintle element.
- According to alternative embodiments, said first abutment surface and said second abutment surface are orthogonal surfaces of a single element.
- These embodiments are extremely economical to produce, transport and store.
- Preferably, the support plug is plate-shaped, so as to occupy a limited space and be of limited visibility.
- According to a second aspect, the invention relates to a seat holder insert for an embedded hinge for reversible doors comprising a frame, composed of a cross-member and a pair of uprights, and at least one panel, said seat holder insert being suitable for being fitted at one end of the panel and comprising at least one seat suitable for housing a pin of the hinge, at least one access passage of the pin in the at least one seat and means able to removably hold the pin in the seat, said passage permitting access of the pin in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the pin, said passage being provided with at least one surface oblique to the transversal axis of the seat.
- Such insert permitting a rapid insertion of the pin in its seat and, consequently, entailing simple and rapid assembly operations.
- In particular the presence of a passage permitting access of the pin in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the pin , avoids complex hoisting operations of the panel to permit the entrance from above, in other words along the pin direction.
- Moreover, the presence of one or more oblique surfaces of the passage, permits a single easy insertion manoeuvre of the pin, overcoming the disadvantage of the prior art mentioned above which requires two articulated insertion manoeuvres.
- The seat holder insert according to the invention may, moreover, be applied to any door panel, with or without a ledge.
- According to some actuation embodiments of the present invention, the reversible door is fitted with a ledge and the seat holder insert is suitable for being fitted in the thickness of the ledge.
- This permits fitting of the door in a vertical sliding manner and a consequent improved insulation of the rooms which the door connects.
- According to preferred embodiments, the means suitable for removably holding the pin in the seat, comprise an obturator suitable for translating in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the pin ( after assembly). It is preferably operated by an elastic or equivalent means.
- Such obturator permits rapid and simple insertion of the pin and, consequently, rapid and simple assembly operations, secures the pin in the seat and permits fast and simple removal operations.
- According to preferred embodiments, the obturator is provided with at least one oblique wall. It forms, together with the aforementioned oblique surface, the passage for the pin, consequently achieving the same advantage mentioned earlier, that is the simplification and elimination of the insertion manoeuvres of the pin.
- Preferably, at least one out of the oblique surface of the passage and the oblique wall of the obturator is parallel to the axis of the pin and forms an angle α preferably of 5° to 135° with the transversal axis A of the seat.
- Such angle α is even more preferably 10° to 85°, this way the access of the pin is facilitated. According to a further aspect, the invention relates to an embedded hinge for reversible doors comprising a pintle element as described above and a seat holder insert as described above.
- Such a hinge makes it possible to achieve fast, simple ad accurate fitting, avoiding problems of misalignment.
- It further resolves the problem related to the appearance, inasmuch as not visible.
- Such hinge is also economical and versatile, in that it can be applied to any reversible door of the known type, with or without ledge and does not require predispositions on the frame. According to a further aspect, the invention relates to a reversible door comprising a frame, composed of a cross-member and a pair of uprights, and at least one panel, which comprises moreover the hinge as described above.
- Such a door is simple and fast to install, economical and of a pleasing appearance. Preferably, the panel of such a door is fitted with a ledge and a housing for the seat holder insert made in the thickness of the ledge.
- This way, the vertical sliding installation of the door on the ground is possible and therefore an improved insulation between the two rooms communicating via the door.
- According to a last aspect, the invention relates to a method of fitting a reversible door with embedded hinge, said door comprising at least one panel and one frame, composed of a cross-member and a pair of uprights, comprising the steps of:
- a. resting a first pintle element as described above on its abutment surfaces and attaching it to the upright at one of its upper ends;
- b. resting a second pintle element as described above on its abutment surfaces and attaching it to the upright at one of its lower ends;
- c. housing a first seat holder insert inside a seat made at an upper end of the panel and attaching it thereto;
- d. housing a second seat holder insert inside a seat made at a lower end of the panel and attaching it thereto;
- e. moving the panel towards the upright so as to push the pins to enter transversally in the respective seats through the respective passages.
- Such method makes it possible to eliminate machining on the frame aimed at making special predispositions, and measurement steps relative to the positioning of the pin and its seat, with consequent advantages from the point of view of the speed and ease of fitting, as well as regards versatility and cost.
- Moreover, such method makes it possible to avoid problems of alignment thanks to the automatic alignment resulting from the shape of the pintle element and the seat holder insert. For a better understanding of the invention and its advantages, a description of some embodiments of the pintle element will be provided below by way of a non-limiting example, of the seat -holder insert, of the hinge, of the reversible door and of the fitting method of the invention with reference to the appended drawings wherein:

passage 13 is further provided with at least onesurface oblique 14 in relation to the transversal axis A of theseat 12. - Preferably,
such oblique surface 14 is parallel to the axis of thepin 6 and forms an angle α preferably between 5° and 135° with the transversal axis A of the seat. - Such angle α is even more preferably between 10° and 85°.
- In the first embodiment shown in
figure 9 , suchseat holder insert 11 comprises asingle seat 12, while according to the second embodiment, shown infigures 10 and 11 , it comprises twoseats 12 selectively engageable by thepin 6. - The means suitable to removably hold the
pin 6 in theseat 12, comprise anobturator 15 preferably provided with at least oneoblique wall 16. In particular in the first embodiment, theobturator 15 comprises oneoblique wall 16, while in the second embodiment, it comprises twooblique walls 16, one at the point of eachseat 12. - The
oblique wall 16 is preferably positioned so as to favour the entrance of the pin through thepassage 13 and then in theseat 12. - The
obturator 15 could also be provided with bevelled and /or spheroid surfaces. - The
obturator 15 is suitable for translating in a direction perpendicular to the pin axis 6 (with reference to the assembly position) operated by anelastic means 17, so as to open and close thepassage 13. - Preferably, each
oblique wall 16 of theobturator 15 is parallel to the axis of thepin 6 and forms an angle α preferably between 5° and 135° with the transversal axis A of the seat. Such angle α is even more preferably between 10° and 85°. - The present invention also relates to the embedded
hinge 2 formed by saidpintle element 1 and by saidseat holder insert 11, as well as to a reversible door incorporatingsuch hinge 2. In particular thepanel 5 of the door according to the invention is provided with four housings at its four corners. - Each of such housings is suitable for housing a
seat holder insert 11. - Once the opening direction of the reversible door has been chosen, one upper seat and one lower seat are closed using a suitable cover, while the remaining two seats house the respective seat holder inserts11.
- Preferably the
panel 5 is provided with a ledge. In such case, the housings for the seat holder inserts are made in the thickness of the ledge, so as to be in an external position to the panel and not occupy the inner space of the panel. - According to a further embodiment, (
Figures 14A, 14B , 15S,15B ) theseat holder insert 11 may comprise abase body 22 which forms theaforementioned seat 12 for housing thepin 6, as well as anattachment block 23 with one or more attachment holes 24 for the connection of theseat holder insert 11 in thededicated cavity 25 of the panel 5.Theattachment block 23 is housed in anadjustment seat 26 of thebase body 22 so as to slide within certain limits (preferably in a single adjustment direction R parallel to the transversal direction t and lockable in a desired position inside saidadjustment seat 26. Advantageously, the adjustment and the blocking of the position of theattachment block 23 in theadjustment seat 26 may be performed using anadjustment screw 27. - This permits fine adjustment of the position of the
panel 5 in relation to the frame of the door. According to one possible embodiment, theadjustment screw 27 has a threaded stem partially screwed into a corresponding threaded hole of theattachment block 23 and a portion, such as the head of the screw, widened in relation to the threaded stem and constrained in thebase body 22 against shifts in the adjustment direction R. Thebase body 22 itself may form an access passage for reaching the head of theadjustment screw 27 using a screwdriver or an Allen wrench in the case of a screw with a recessed hexagonal head. In order to permit use of the sameseat holder insert 11 above or below or on the right or left side of the panel, theadjustment seat 26 is shaped, for example symmetrical to a plane parallel to that defined by the orthogonal axis o and transversal axis t such as to receive theattachment block 23 in a longitudinal direction I from two opposite sides and to transmit the tightening force of the attachment screws to thebase body 22, depending on the side of insertion of theattachment block 23, at will in one or other longitudinal direction I (Figures 14A ,15A ). It is therefore sufficient to overturn theseat holder insert 11 in relation to the panel and overturn theattachment block 23 in relation to thebase body 22 of theinsert 11. - In the examples of embodiment shown in
figures 14A and15A and also applicable to the other embodiments described above, theadjustment seat 26 may form two oppositeparallel ribs 28, extending in a transversal direction t and theattachment block 23 may have an elongated shape with a substantially constant transversal "T" cross-section, such as to be insertable in theadjustment seat 26 from both sides and suitable for abutting against theribs 28. - Alternatively, the
attachment block 23 may be non-separable from theadjustment seat 26 and be inserted therein with a shape coupling such as to transmit the tightening force of the attachment screws to thebase body 22 in two opposite longitudinal directions I. In this case the attachment holes 24 are shaped to permit the passage of the attachment screws from two opposite sides. - The present invention also relates to a method of fitting a reversible door with embedded
hinge 2, of the aforementioned type. - After selecting the direction in which the door is to open, the method envisages the steps of:
- a. resting a
first pintle element 1 on itsabutment surfaces upright 4 at one of its upper ends; - b. resting a
second pintle element 1 on itsabutment surfaces upright 4 at one of its lower ends; - c. housing a first
seat holder insert 11 inside a seat made at an upper end of thepanel 5 and attaching it thereto; - d. housing a second
seat holder insert 11 inside a seat made at a lower end of thepanel 5 and attaching it thereto; - e. moving the
panel 5 towards theupright 4 so as to push thepins 6 to enter transversally in therespective seats 12 through therespective passages 13. - Preferably, before the step of moving the panel and upright towards each other, a step of covering the two housings respectively at an upper end and a lower end of the
panel 5, on the side longitudinally opposite the housings engaged by the seat holder inserts 11, is envisaged. - Such step takes place by using suitable covers.
- A person skilled in the art may make further modifications and variations to the
pintle element 1,seat holder insert 11, embeddedhinge 2, reversible door and to the method according to the present invention so as to satisfy contingent and specific requirements while remaining within the sphere of protection of the present invention.
