Description

    FIELD OF THE INVENTION
  • The present invention relates to a wide adhesive sheeted roll for contact cleaning. More particularly, the present invention relates to a wide adhesive sheeted roll for contact cleaning and a method of manufacturing the wide adhesive sheeted roll using an adjustable dead-stop to control the position of a tension roller.
  • BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
  • Contact cleaning is used to clean substrate surfaces. Once cleaned the substrate surfaces may be used in a variety of sophisticated processes such as in the manufacturing of electronics, photovoltaics and flat panel displays. Usually, a rubber or elastomeric cleaning roller is used to remove contaminating particles from a substrate surface and an adhesive sheeted roller can then be used to remove the contaminating particles from the cleaning roller. This allows the cleaning roller to maximise its efficiency in removing contaminating particles.
  • However, a problem has existed in the manufacturing of adhesive rolls in that it has not been possible to form good quality wide adhesive sheets such as greater than 1.5 m wide. Previous methods of forming adhesive sheets have been unable to form good quality wide adhesive sheets due to difficulties in unwrapping and cutting. Additionally, due to the fact that previously it has not been possible to manufacture wide adhesive rolls, attempts have been made to laterally join more than one adhesive cleaning roll to form a wider contact cleaning area. However, this has led to difficulties in joining the two adhesive rollers onto a mandrel and preventing the formation of a gap between the two rollers.
  • US 2003 / 000989 A1 is disclosing a feeding system comprising a flexible platen suitable for web and sheet materials such as plastics with or without adhesive backings.
  • It is an object of at least one aspect of the present invention to obviate or mitigate at least one or more of the aforementioned problems.
  • It is a further object of at least one aspect of the present invention to provide a wide adhesive sheeted roll for contact cleaning.
  • It is a further object of at least one aspect of the present invention to provide an improved method of manufacturing wide adhesive sheeted roll using an adjustable dead-stop to control the position of a tension roller.
  • SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
  • According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided an apparatus capable of manufacturing a wide adhesive sheeted roll with a width of greater than about 1.5 m for contact cleaning according to claim 1. The present invention therefore relates to an apparatus capable of manufacturing a wide adhesive sheeted roll with a width of greater than about 1.5 m for contact cleaning where an upper located rotatably mounted tension roller is capable of having its height adjusted during use and therefore ensuring that a constant or substantially constant pressure is applied to a web which forms adhesive sheeted rolls. This allows high quality adhesive sheets to be formed. This significantly advantageous feature allows wider adhesive sheeted rolls to be formed than was previously possible with apparatus comprising fixed ends for the tension roller.
  • Typically, the apparatus of the present invention may be capable of forming wide adhesive sheeted rolls with a width of greater than about 1.5 m and optionally up to about 2.2 m or even higher.
  • The rotatably mounted tension roller may therefore be capable of adjusting its height during the feeding of the adhesive web between the counter-rotating tension roller and path roller. The height adjustment may be achieved by using any suitable means that allows both ends of the tension roller to vary in height. There are height adjustable means on both ends of the tension roller. The height adjustable means also comprise adjustable dead-stop mechanisms which are capable of limiting the amount of vertical travel for either end of the tension roller.
  • The height adjustable means may comprise a back-plate onto which all component parts of the dead-stop mechanism may be mounted. The height adjustable means may comprise a movable jaw which is capable of moving up and down. The movable jaw may be connected to an arm which may be spring activated and which allows movement of the movable jaw and is also capable of moving up and down with the movable jaw. The arm may be connected to a lever capable of articulating about a pivot point on the back-plate.
  • The height adjustable means may therefore comprise a dead-stop which controls and limits the amount of vertical travel of the movable jaw.
  • The vertical position of the movable jaw and the dead-stop may also be adjusted in a vertical slot to obtain the optimum operating conditions and to provide a constant or substantially constant pressure across the adhesive web.
  • The apparatus may also comprise rotatable shafts onto which the tension roller and the path roller may be mounted.
  • The tension roller may be substantially cylindrical in shape and may be located above the path roller which may also be substantially cylindrical in shape.
  • The apparatus may also comprise a brake to control the feed rate of the web.
  • According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of manufacturing a wide adhesive sheeted roll for contact cleaning said method comprising using an apparatus as defined in the first aspect.
  • The method may also produce wide adhesive sheeted rolls with a width of up to about 2.2 m or even higher.
  • BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
  • Embodiments of the present invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
    • Figure 1 is a perspective front view of an apparatus capable of manufacturing wide adhesive sheeted rolls for contact cleaning according to an embodiment of the present invention;
    • Figure 2 is a perspective rear view of the apparatus shown in Figure 1; and
    • Figure 3 is an expanded view of an adjustable dead-stop mechanism used in the apparatus shown in Figures 1 and 2.
    BRIEF DESCRIPTION
  • Generally speaking, the present invention resides in the provision of a wide adhesive sheeted roll for contact cleaning and a method of manufacturing the wide adhesive sheeted roll using an adjustable dead-stop.
  • Figure 1 is a representation of an apparatus capable of manufacturing wide adhesive sheeted rolls generally designated 100. The apparatus 100 comprises a tension roller 110 and a path roller 112. The tension roller 110 is substantially cylindrical in shape and is located above the path roller 112 which is also substantially cylindrical in shape. As shown in Figure 1 a wide adhesive web 114 is fed through a gap between the counter-rotating tension roller 110 and path roller 112. Figure 1 also shows that the apparatus comprises a brake 116.
  • Figure 2 is a perspective rear view of the apparatus 100 and shows the wide adhesive web 114 being fed through a gap between the tension roller 110 and the path roller 112. Figure 2 also shows that on each side of the apparatus 100 there are adjustable dead-stop mechanisms 118. The adjustable dead-stop mechanism 118 shown in the right-hand side of Figure 2 is circle with dashed line 'A' and is shown in an expanded form in Figure 3.
  • Figure 3 shows that the dead-stop mechanism 118 comprises a back-plate 120 onto which all component parts of the dead-stop mechanism 118 are mounted. The tension roller 110 is shown rotatably mounted to a movable jaw 122 which is capable of moving up and down. This will be discussed in more detail below. The movable jaw 122 has a lower bottom surface 123. Connected to the movable jaw 122 there is an arm generally designated 124 which is attached to the back-plate 120. The arm 124 comprises an upper member 126 which is spring activated and connected to the movable jaw 122 at connection point 128. On the bottom part of the arm 124 there is a lower member 125 which receives the upper member 126 and is able to move the height and location of the movable jaw 122. The lower end 130 of the arm 124 is connected to a lever 132 capable of articulating about pivot point 134 on the back-plate 120.
  • Figure 3 also shows that there is a block 136 with a dead-stop 138 mounted on top of the block 136. There is shown a gap generally designated 140 between the dead-stop 138 and the bottom surface 123 of the movable jaw 122. The jaw 122 can therefore move within the gap 140 in a substantially vertical manner. There is also shown a vertical slot 142 within which the height and vertical location of the movable jaw 122 and dead-stop 138 are capable of being adjusted.
  • In use, the adhesive web 114 is fed between the tension roller 110 and the path roller 112. The brake 116 may be used to control the feed rate of the web 114. During this process as the tension roller 110 and the path roller 112 are rotated against one another, the upper located tension roller 110 is capable of adjusting its vertical position along the direction shown by the vertical line B - C. As the height and position of the tension roller 110 is capable of constantly adjusting using the movable jaw 122 and the amount of vertical travel being controlled by the adjustable dead-stop 138, this allows a constant or substantially constant pressure to be applied across the web 114. This feature of the apparatus 100 of the present invention allows a much wider adhesive web 114 to be formed than was previously possible. For example, the apparatus 100 of the present invention is capable of forming greater than about 1.5 m wide adhesive sheeted rolls and up to about 2.2 m or even higher.
  • Whilst specific embodiments of the present invention have been described above, it will be appreciated that departures from the described embodiments may still fall within the scope of the present invention. Moreover, any suitable type of mechanism which allows the height of an upper tension roller to adjust during the manufacturing process of a wide adhesive web may be used.
