Definitions
- Lithium belongs to the alkali metals. Like the heavier element homologue, it is characterized by a strong reactivity to a variety of substances. So it reacts violently, often under inflammation with water, alcohols and other substances containing protic hydrogen. It is unstable in air and it reacts with oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide. It is therefore normally handled under inert gas (noble gases such as argon) and stored under a protective layer of paraffin oil. Furthermore, it reacts with many functionalized solvents, even if they contain no protic hydrogen.
- cyclic ethers such as THF are opened by ring cleavage, and esters and carbonyl compounds are generally lithiated and reduced.
- the reaction between said chemicals or environmental substances is catalyzed by water.
- lithium metal can be stored and processed in dry air for extended periods of time as it forms a reasonably stable passivation layer that prevents further corrosion.
- functionalized solvents for example N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), which in anhydrous form is much less reactive with lithium than, for example, with water contents> 100 ppm.
- NMP N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone
- Another way to stabilize lithium metal is to heat it above its melting point, stir the molten lithium, and contact it with a fluorinating agent, such as perfluoropentylamine ( WO 2007/005983 A2 ).
- a fluorinating agent such as perfluoropentylamine (WO 2007/005983 A2 ).
- fluorinating agents are often toxic or corrosive and are therefore used reluctantly in industrial practice.
- Another method of protective surface treatment of lithium metal is to coat it with a wax layer, such as a polyethylene wax ( WO 2008/045557 A1 ).
- a wax layer such as a polyethylene wax ( WO 2008/045557 A1 ).
- the disadvantage is that a relatively large amount of coating agent is required for very finely divided lithium metal powders. In the examples of said patent application about 1%.
- US 2008 / 0283155A1 describes a method of stabilizing lithium metal characterized by the steps of: a) heating lithium metal powder above the melting point to produce molten lithium metal, b) dispersing the molten lithium metal; and c) contacting the molten lithium metal with a phosphorus-containing substance to produce a substantially continuous protective layer of lithium phosphate on the lithium metal powder.
- a disadvantage of this method is that lithium powder must first be melted and the coating takes place at temperatures above the lithium melting point. On the one hand, the relatively high temperatures require a corresponding expenditure of energy, on the other hand molten lithium has an extremely corrosive effect on various materials such as glasses, sealants and many metallic materials such as carbon-containing steels.
- the polyvalent ion-containing protective film contains a combination of salts of the active metal comprising the active metal phosphates, active metal metaphosphates and further active metal sulfates, as well as combinations of these compounds.
- This anode active material is said to be formed by treating the metallic anode material with a protective film on the anode forming agent selected from H 3 PO 4 , HPO 3 , XH 2 PO 4, and NR 4 H 2 PO 4 and mixtures thereof one or more agents comprising H 2 SO 4 and LiHSO 4 , wherein X is an atom of the active metal and R is an alkyl group.
- a protective film on the anode forming agent selected from H 3 PO 4 , HPO 3 , XH 2 PO 4, and NR 4 H 2 PO 4 and mixtures thereof one or more agents comprising H 2 SO 4 and LiHSO 4 , wherein X is an atom of the active metal and R is an alkyl group.
- JP H11 135153 A discloses a nonaqueous electrolyte-containing secondary battery having an anode of lithium metal particles provided with a stabilizing film.
- This stabilizing film comprises fluorine and carbonate compounds and is said to be obtained by a fluorination treatment of the surface of the metallic particles in an organic solvent which dissolves hydrogen fluoride.
- This is done, for example, by treating the anode material with an electrolyte containing LiPF 6 as the conductive salt to which a defined amount of water has been added.
- US2009 / 0061321 proposed to produce a stabilized lithium metal powder with a substantially continuous polymer coating.
- the polymer may be selected from the group polyurethanes, PTFE, PVC, polystyrene, etc.
- a disadvantage of this method is that the protected lithium metal gets an undefined surface coating of organic substances that may interfere with its use, for example, for the prelithiation of electrode materials.
- the surface-passivated lithium metal has a composite topcoat containing or consisting of at least two sparingly soluble lithium-containing components.
- the composite topcoat preferably contains or consists of the sparingly soluble components lithium carbonate, lithium fluoride and lithium metaphosphate.
- the composite top layer particularly preferably contains or consists of the sparingly soluble components lithium carbonate and lithium metaphosphate.
- the phosphorus content is 0.01 to 2 mass%, preferably 0.03 to 1 mass% of the surface-passivated lithium metal.
- the passivating agent used is preferably lithium tris (oxalato) phosphate. That lithium metal is treated in the temperature range between 100 and 175 ° C with the passivating agent.
- the inert, aprotic solvents used are hydrocarbons, ethers or mixtures of the stated solvent groups.
- the solvents used are preferably aromatic hydrocarbons, preferably toluene, xylenes, cumene or tetralin.
- the passivating agent is used in dissolved form.
- ethers are preferably THF, THP; Esters, preferably ethyl acetate, butyl butyrate; Lactones preferably ⁇ -butyrolactone (GBL) or carbonic acid ester, preferably ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate, dimethyl carbonate or mixtures of the solvents mentioned used.
- the lithium metal is used as a powder with a particle size ⁇ 0.5 mm, granules with a particle size in the range of 0.5 mm to 10 mm or foil with a thickness of up to 1 mm.
- the powder preferably has an average particle size (D50) of ⁇ 200 ⁇ m, preferably ⁇ 100 ⁇ m and particularly preferably ⁇ 50 ⁇ m.
- the contact time between the passivating agent and the lithium metal is at least 5 minutes, preferably at least 10 minutes.
- the passivating agent is used in a molar ratio of 0.2 to 20: 1000, preferably 0.5 to 10: 1000, based on lithium metal powder and 0.02 to 1: 1000, preferably 0.05 to 0.5: 1000, based on granules or film.
- x 0, ie the passivating agent is fluorine-free, with passivating agent particularly preferably lithium tris (oxalato) phosphate ("LiTOP").
- LiTOP decomposes at temperatures above about 140 ° C according to the following reaction equation: n LiP (C 2 O 4 ) 3 ---- ⁇ (LiPO 3 ) n + 3 n CO 2 + 3 n CO
- the surface-passivated lithium metal is suitable for chemical lithiation of electrochemically active materials, preferably graphite, alloy or conversion anodes of lithium batteries.
- electrochemically active materials preferably graphite, alloy or conversion anodes of lithium batteries.
- the suspension is filtered through a reverse frit, washed with 2 x 20 ml of cumene and 3 x 20 ml of hexane and then vacuum-dried at room temperature for 20 minutes. Yield: 4.85 g P content: 0.70 mass% Metal content: 98.5% by mass (determined by gas volumetric method)
- Coated lithium metal powder prepared as in Example 1, is subjected to the official UN test N.2, the test for pyrophoric properties of solids. In none of the individual experiments was an ignition of the powder observed. The product can therefore be classified as non-pyrophoric.

Description
- Keine Handhabung saurer Stoffe.
