Description

  • The present invention relates to a door or window brake device for a door or window assembly, the device comprising a track element adapted to be mounted along an edge of a door leaf or window sash arranged movable in a frame between an open position and a closed position, the track element being formed by a metal profile having a first side wall and a second side wall being opposed to each other, a bottom wall and a top wall being provided with an opening in the form of a longitudinal groove, a slider guided longitudinally in the track element, a stay element having a first end pivotally connected to the slider and a second end adapted to be pivotally connected to a mounting bracket adapted to be connected to the frame, and an actuation rod extending along the track element and being adapted to be rotated about a longitudinal axis by operation of a locking device of the door or window assembly, the actuation rod having a non-circular cross-section interacting so with the slider that the actuation rod is rotatable between a first angular position, in which the slider is free to slide along the track element, and a second angular position, in which the actuation rod presses the slider against the first side wall of the metal profile forming the track element so that the slider is blocked in the track element, the slider being provided with opposed guiding contact faces adapted to slide along the bottom wall and top wall of the metal profile forming the track element, respectively, and the slider being provided with a brake block adapted to, in the second angular position of the actuation rod, abut the first side wall of the metal profile forming the track element.
  • In known door or window brake devices, a track element in the form of an aluminium profile is mounted flush into an edge face of the door leaf or window sash. A metal slider inside the aluminium profile is, through a groove opening in the top wall of the profile, connected pivotally directly with a stay element about an axis parallel with door leaf or window pane. A similar brake device is known from SE 442655 B . However, it may be a disadvantage that a jarring sound may occur during opening and closing the door or window. GB 1 237 941 A discloses an adjustable window brake device according to the preamble of claim 1 comprising a bolt, a slide block sliding on a portion of the bolt having a non-circular cross-section and pivoted to a window stay, and means to simultaneously rotate the bolt and move it longitudinally to friction lock the block and stay.
The object of the present invention is to provide a door or window brake device having an improved sliding motion.
  • In view of this object, a longitudinal axis of the stay element, when the longitudinal axis of the stay element is directed at right angles to the longitudinal direction of the metal profile, extends in a direction parallel with a line through the bottom and top wall of the metal profile forming the track element, and the opposed guiding contact faces of the slider are formed by a relatively soft material, such as a composite or plastic material, and the braze block of the slider is formed by metal.
  • In this way, the main frictional forces acting between the slider and the track element during opening and closing of the door or window as a result of the forces in the longitudinal axis of the stay element will occur between the guiding contact faces formed by a relatively soft material and the metal track element. Thereby, an excellent sliding motion may be obtained. As the slider is provided with a brake block formed by metal, at the same time, an excellent braking force may be obtained in the second angular position of the actuation rod. Furthermore, as the opening in the form of the longitudinal groove in the metal profile, in the position of use of the device mounted in a door or window assembly, opens sideways in relation to the door leaf or window pane, the device is less prone to accumulating dust or debris inside the track element. Thereby, a further improved sliding motion may be obtained.
In an embodiment, the slider is provided with a groove, preferably of semi-circular cross-section, in which the actuation rod extends so that it, preferably directly, may abut the second side wall of the metal profile forming the track element.
  • In an embodiment, the slider is formed as a block formed by a relatively soft material, such as a composite or plastic material, and the brake block is preferably arranged adjustably on the slider. Thereby, the braking force may be adjusted.
  • In an embodiment, the brake block is formed by a slightly elastic metal plate, opposed ends of which are bent slightly away from the slider in relation to a central area of the metal plate, and the central area of the metal plate abuts the slider, preferably by means of an adjustment screw. Thereby, a suitable braking force may be obtained.
  • In an embodiment, the slider is formed as a block formed by a moulded material in which a first end of a stay bracket is inserted, the stay bracket extends through the longitudinal groove in the top wall of the metal profile forming the track element, and a second end of the stay bracket is pivotally connected to the stay element.
  • In an embodiment, the slider is provided with elastic flaps directed obliquely out from the side of the slider on which the brake block is arranged, so that the elastic flaps tend to urge the brake block away from the metal profile side wall that the brake block is adapted to brake against. Thereby, it may be ensured that the brake block does not slide against said metal profile side during opening and closing of the door or window, thereby avoiding a jarring sound.
  • In an embodiment, a housing of the brake device is formed by the metal profile forming the track element and end caps mounted at either end of the metal profile and forming bearings for the actuation rod, and the actuation rod extends from either end cap so that it is connectable to the locking device of the door or window assembly. In this way, the brake device may be employed for both left and right opening door or window assemblies in that the part of the actuation rod extending from the end cap at the end of the device opposed to the locking device side of the door leaf or window sash may be cut off before mounting the device on the door or window assembly.
  • In an embodiment, the track element is adapted to be mounted on the door leaf or window sash so that a side wall of the metal profile forming the track element faces a bottom of a groove extending in an edge face of the door leaf or window sash. Thereby, a more compact door or window assembly may be achieved.
  • In an embodiment, the metal profile forming the track element is provided with a mounting flange protruding from the outside of its bottom wall in a direction away from its top wall, and the mounting flange is provided with mounting holes.
  • The invention further relates to a door or window assembly comprising a door leaf or window sash arranged movable in a frame and a door or window brake device as described above. The assembly is characterized in that, in the closed position of the door or window assembly, a part of the metal profile forming the track element is located in a gap between an edge face of the door leaf or window sash and the frame.
  • The invention will now be explained in more detail below by means of examples of embodiments with reference to the very schematic drawing, in which
    • Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a door or window brake device according to the invention,
    • Fig. 2 is top view of the door or window brake device in Fig. 1,
    • Fig. 3 is a perspective view of part of the door or window brake device in Fig. 1, whereby a housing has been removed,
    • Fig. 4 is a cross-section through the door or window brake device along the line IV-IV in Fig. 2, in the unlocked position, and
    • Fig. 5 is a cross-section through the door or window brake device along the line IV-IV in Fig. 2, in the locked position.
  • Fig. 1 shows a door or window brake device 1 for a not shown door or window assembly comprising a door leaf or a window sash arranged movable in a frame between an open position and a closed position. The device 1 comprises a track element 2 being formed by a metal profile 3 having a first side wall 4 and a second side wall 5 being opposed to each other, a bottom wall 6 and a top wall 7 being provided with an opening 8 in the form of a longitudinal groove 9; see Figs. 4 and 5.
  • A slider 10 is guided longitudinally in the track element 2, and a stay element 11 has a first end 12 pivotally connected to the slider 10 and a second end 13 adapted to be pivotally connected to a not shown mounting bracket adapted to be connected to the frame. An actuation rod 14 extends along the track element 2 and is, in a manner well known to the person skilled in the art, adapted to be rotated about a longitudinal axis by operation of a not shown locking device of the door or window assembly. The actuation rod 14 has a non-circular cross-section interacting so with the slider 10 that the actuation rod 14 is rotatable between a first angular position, in which the slider 10 is free to slide along the track element 2, see Fig. 4, and a second angular position, in which the actuation rod 14 presses the slider 10 against the first side wall 4 of the metal profile 3 forming the track element 2 so that the slider 10 is blocked in the track element 2, see Fig. 5. In this way, the door or window assembly may in a manner known per se, by operation the locking device, be blocked in an optional open position.
  • A longitudinal axis 15 of the stay element 11, when the longitudinal axis 15 of the stay element 11 is directed at right angles to the longitudinal direction of the housing 30 of the brake device 1, see Fig. 2, extends in a direction D, see Fig. 4, parallel with a not shown line through the bottom wall 6 and top wall 7 of the metal profile 3 forming the track element 2. The slider 10 is provided with opposed guiding contact faces 16 formed by a relatively soft material, such as a composite or plastic material. Said opposed guiding contact faces 16 are adapted to slide along the bottom wall 6 and top wall 7, respectively, of the metal profile 3 forming the track element 2. Thereby, a controlled opening and closing motion of the door or window may be obtained. The slider 10 is provided with a brake block 17 formed by metal and being adapted to, in the second angular position of the actuation rod 14 shown in Fig. 5, abut the first side wall 4 of the metal profile 3 forming the track element 2. However, alternatively, the brake block 17 could be placed between the actuation rod 14 and the second side wall 5 of the metal profile 3.
  • As illustrated by Figs. 4 and 5, the braking effect is achieved by a displacement upward in the figures, that is in a direction from the second side wall 5 to the first side wall 4, of the slider 10 and the brake block 17, so that the brake block abuts and presses against the first side wall 4. This displacement of the slider 10 and brake block 17 is achieved by a rotation of the actuation rod 14 from its first angular position shown in Fig. 4 to its second angular position shown in Fig. 5. As it is seen, the slider 10 is provided with a groove 19 of semi-circular cross-section in which the actuation rod 14 extends. However, alternatively, the actuation rod 14 may just be located between a flat or other suitable surface of the slider 10 and the second side wall 5 of the metal profile 3.
  • In the first angular position shown in Fig. 4, a flat face 18 of the actuation rod 14 having a non-circular cross-section is positioned substantially flat against the second side wall 5 of the metal profile 3, whereas in the second angular position shown in Fig. 5, the actuation rod 14 has been rotated so that part of its semi-circular circumference abuts the second side wall 5 of the metal profile 3 with the result that the actuation rod and consequently the slider 10 and the brake block 17 has been displaced away from the second side wall 5 and in the direction of the first side wall 4. It will be understood by the skilled person that the actuation rod 14 may have other non-circular cross-sections than that shown in the figures in order to achieve the desired brake effect.
  • In the embodiment shown, the slider 10 is formed as a block formed by a relatively soft material, such as a composite or plastic material, so that thereby, the opposed guiding contact faces 16 are also formed by said relatively soft material. The brake block 17 is arranged adjustably on the slider 10 by means of an adjustment screw 20. Further, the brake block 17 is formed by a slightly elastic metal plate 23, opposed ends 21 of which are bent slightly away from the slider 10 in relation to a central area 22 of the metal plate 23. The central area 22 of the metal plate abuts the slider by means of the adjustment screw 20.
  • Further, in the embodiment shown, the slider 10 is formed as a block formed by a moulded material in which a first end 24 of a stay bracket 25 is inserted. The stay bracket 25 extends through the longitudinal groove 9 in the top wall 7 of the metal profile 3 forming the track element 2, and a second end 26 of the stay bracket 25 is pivotally connected to the stay element 11 by means of a pivot 27.
  • The slider 10 is provided with elastic flaps 28 directed obliquely out from a side 29 of the slider 10 on which the brake block 17 is arranged, so that the elastic flaps 28 tend to urge the brake block away from the first side wall 4 of the metal profile that the brake block is adapted to brake against.
  • A housing 30 of the brake device 1 is formed by the metal profile 3 forming the track element and end caps 31 mounted at either end of the metal profile and forming bearings for the actuation rod. The actuation rod 14 extends from either end cap 31 so that it is connectable to the not shown locking device of the door or window assembly. In this way, the brake device 1 may be employed for both left and right opening door or window assemblies in that the part of the actuation rod 14 extending from the end cap 31 at the end of the device 1 opposed to the locking device side of the door leaf or window sash may be cut off before mounting the device 1 on the door or window assembly.
  • The track element 2 is adapted to be mounted on the not shown door leaf or window sash so that the second side wall 5 of the metal profile 3 forming the track element 2 faces a bottom of a groove extending in an edge face of the door leaf or window sash.
  • The metal profile 3 forming the track element 2 is provided with a mounting flange 32 protruding from the outside of its bottom wall 6 in a direction away from its top wall 7, and the mounting flange 32 is provided with mounting holes 33.
  • When the door or window brake device 1 according to the invention is mounted in a door or window assembly comprising a door leaf or window sash arranged movable in a frame, in the closed position of the door or window assembly, a part of the metal profile 3 forming the track element 2 may be located in a gap between an edge face of the door leaf or window sash and the frame.

A door or window brake device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the brake block (17) is formed by a slightly elastic metal plate (23), opposed ends (21) of which are bent slightly away from the slider (10) in relation to a central area (22) of the metal plate (23), and in that the central area (22) of the metal plate (23) abuts the slider (10), preferably by means of an adjustment screw (20).
  5. A door or window brake device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the slider (10) is formed as a block formed by a moulded material in which a first end (24) of a stay bracket (25) is inserted, in that the stay bracket (25) extends through the longitudinal groove (9) in the top wall (7) of the metal profile (3) forming the track element (2), and in that a second end (26) of the stay bracket (25) is pivotally connected to the stay element (11).
  6. A door or window brake device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the slider (10) is provided with elastic flaps (28) directed obliquely out from the side (29) of the slider (10) on which the brake block (17) is arranged, so that the elastic flaps (28) tend to urge the brake block (17) away from the metal profile side wall (4) that the brake block (17) is adapted to brake against.
  7. A door or window brake device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that a housing (30) of the brake device (1) is formed by the metal profile (3) forming the track element (2) and end caps (31) mounted at either end of the metal profile (3) and forming bearings for the actuation rod (14), and in that the actuation rod (14) extends from either end cap (31) so that it is connectable to the locking device of the door or window assembly.
  8. A door or window brake device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the track element (2) is adapted to be mounted on the door leaf or window sash so that a side wall of the metal profile (3) forming the track element (2) faces a bottom of a groove extending in an edge face of the door leaf or window sash.
  9. A door or window brake device according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that the metal profile (3) forming the track element (2) is provided with a mounting flange (32) protruding from the outside of its bottom wall (6) in a direction away from its top wall (7), and in that the mounting flange (32) is provided with mounting holes (33).
  10. A door or window assembly comprising a door leaf or window sash arranged movable in a frame and a door or window brake device (1) according to any one of the preceding claims, characterized in that, in the closed position of the door or window assembly, a part of the metal profile (3) forming the track element (2) is located in a gap between an edge face of the door leaf or window sash and the frame.
