In herkömmlicher Weise wird dabei der Grundkörper etwa aus einem Kunststoffblock ausgeschnitten, wobei sich dabei Seitenflächen ergeben, die rechtwinkelig zur Grund- und Deckfläche orientiert sind. Im Bereich der Grundfläche werden in weiterer Folge Nuten eingefräst, die mit Leuchtmittel, in der Regel Leuchtdioden (LED), bestückt werden. Die Leuchtmittel werden miteinander elektrisch verbunden, und die Nuten mit einer transparenten Füllmasse verschlossen, sodass die Leuchtmittel sicher eingebettet sind. Das von den Leuchtmitteln abgegebene Licht wird somit durch den transparenten Grundkörper aufgrund der Lichtstreuung homogenisiert, und über die Deckfläche in Richtung des Betrachters abgestrahlt. Die Deckfläche scheint daher gleichmäßig zu leuchten, ohne dass die genaue Positionierung der Leuchtmittel erkennbar wäre. Zur Verbesserung der Abstrahlcharakteristik wird die Grundfläche in der Regel mit einer reflektierenden Schicht versehen, etwa in Form einer reflektierenden Platte, sodass ein Maximum des Lichts der Leuchtmittel über die Deckfläche abgestrahlt wird.Luminaires of this type are known in many designs, such as in the form of letters, which are assembled into words and serve as neon signs.
