  • the prior art comprises isostatic dies which comprise a metal body provided with an active surface destined to face towards the inside of the forming cavity of the die, provided with a concentric cavity which is superiorly closed by an elastic membrane, which is anchored to the metal body in a plurality of predetermined zones and which is destined to be in contact with the mass of ceramic powders in order to coin one of the flat surfaces of the tile.
  • the above-described concentric cavity is filled with an incompressible pressurised fluid which inflates the elastic membrane at the zones in which it is not anchored to the metal body.
  • the air contained in the forming cavity must necessarily flow towards the outside.
  • this stage is usually defined as the degassing stage, and is necessary in order to prevent grave defects in the finished ceramic product from emerging, deriving from the presence of residual air trapped in the pressed unfired tile.
  • the air flow generally runs from the centre of the forming cavity towards the periphery, where it exits by passing into the space (usually tenths of a millimetre) existing between the edge of the dies and the lateral containing matrix.
  • the phenomenon is very relevant in isostatic dies due to the realising of large-format tiles, where the air trapped at the centre has to move along a long tract before discharging at the edges of the die.
  • a drawback in the pressing of ceramic tiles is also the time required for all the air present in the forming cavities to exit completely, such as to obtain a perfect degassing.
  • a further drawback consists in the fact that the wear on ceramic dies is mainly determined by the above-cited degassing air current which, as it contains abrasive particles, causes premature wear on the edges of the dies and the matrix.
  • the aim of the invention is thus to at least partly obviate the abovementioned drawbacks, facilitating the unloading of the air from the forming cavity, while at the same time preventing rapid wear of the ceramic dies, and increasing plant productivity.
  • a further aim of the invention is to attain these objectives in the ambit of an effective, simple and rational solution with contained costs.
  • the invention provides, in its simplest version, i.e. in a case where the dies are not isostatic, a die comprising a metal base provided with an upper elastic membrane resting on the base and destined to come into contact with the ceramic powder.
