Zumeist eingesetzte runde Zylindersiebe sind wegen der Statik dickwandig und müssen mit Wasserstrahl, Lasern oder Bohrern gelocht werden. Das macht sie teuer. Der Einsatz von Spaltsieben ist noch kostenintensiver. Da die Ställe heute meistens gespült werden, gelangen immer wieder Steine, Sand oder sogar Gegenstände in die Maschinen. Die vier Siebe werden soweit vorgeschoben, bis die senkrechten Kanten der angrenzenden Siebe einen rechten Winkel bilden.
