Definitions
- the invention relates to molded aluminum alloy parts subjected to high mechanical stresses and working, at least in some of their areas, at high temperatures, including cylinder heads supercharged diesel or gasoline engines.
- alloys commonly used for the cylinder heads of automotive mass-produced vehicles are on the one hand alloys of the AlSi7Mg and AlSi10Mg type, optionally “doped” by an addition of 0.50% to 1% of copper, and on the other hand alloys of the AlSi5 family at 9Cu3Mg.
- the alloys of the first type, AlSi7 (Cu) Mg and AlSi10 (Cu) Mg treated T5 (simple stabilization) and T7 (complete solution treatment, quenching and over-tempering) have sufficient mechanical properties up to about 250 ° C, but not at 300 ° C, which will nevertheless be reached by the inter-valve jumpers of the new generations of supercharged common-rail diesel engines, or even new gasoline engines with double turbocharging.
- alloys of the type AlSi5 to 9Cu3Mg0.25 to 0.5 which have a better resistance to heat, have on the other hand a rather low ductility which makes them very vulnerable to thermal fatigue cracking.
- FR 2 690 927 proposes aluminum-based casting alloys with good creep resistance and with additions of 0.1-0.2% Ti, 0.1-0.2% Zr and 0.2-0.4% V, especially on a type A composition basis -S5U3G.
- Figures 1, 2 and 3 represent the breaking stress (successively with a breaking probability of 5% in bright lines on the left, 50% in dark lines in the middle and 95% in bright lines on the right) as a function of the number of cycles.
- the invention is based on the finding by the Applicant that it is possible to make significant improvements to the characteristics mentioned above of AlSi7Cu3.5MnVZrTi alloy according to the patents FR 2,857,378 and EP 1 651 787 of the applicant, and thus solve the objective problem, in two complementary ways: the addition of a small amount of magnesium and a combined addition of vanadium.
- Table 2 indicates, depending on the amount of magnesium added, the amounts of Al2Cu and Q-Al5Mg8Si6Cu2 hardening phases formed in the base AlSi7Cu3.5MnVZrTi, at equilibrium at 200 ° C., after a setting of solution followed by quenching.
- the values (in this case, in atomic%) are calculated using the "Prophase" thermodynamic simulation software developed by the Applicant.
- Table 2 Mq (% by weight) 0.00 0.05 0.07 0.10 0.14 0.19 Al2Cu 4.26 4.23 4.22 4.19 4.16 4.12 Q-Al5Mg8Si6Cu2 0.00 0.15 0.23 0.35 0.49 0.67
- the gain on the elastic limit at 20 ° C is substantially 100 MPa (from 200 to about 300 MPa) with an addition of only 0.10%.
- the effect of magnesium is absolutely not linear in the range 0 to 0.20%: it is indeed negligible between 0 and 0.05%, intense between 0.05 and 0.10% and a plateau is then observed to a level of substantially 0.20%.
- magnesium no longer has a significant effect on the endurance limit, of the order of 130 MPa to 10 7 cycles, still according to the figure 6 .
- the alloys of Al type Al Si5Cu3 and AlSi7Cu3 according to the invention do not exhibit the final quaternary eutectic Al-Si-Al2Cu-Al5Mg8Si6Cu2, melting at 507 ° C according to the HWL Philips phase diagrams (Equilibrium Diagrams of Aluminum Alloy Systems, The Aluminum Development Association, Information Bulletin 25. London.1961) or at 508 ° C according to other authors. Indeed, their melting start temperature, determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), is substantially at 513 ° C., as shown in FIG. figure 9 .
- DSC differential scanning calorimetry
- magnesium a high diffusion coefficient eutectic element, participates in the structural hardening after tempering, by formation of intermetallic phases coherent with the aluminum matrix, in this case via the Q phase mentioned above, but progressively loses its hardening effect by coalescing said phase at 300 ° C and higher.
- vanadium, peritectic element with very low diffusion coefficient is present in solid solution enriched in the heart of dendrites and can possibly precipitate in the form of only semi-coherent dispersoids Al-V-Si which remain stable at high temperatures above 400 ° C.
- Vanadium addition greater than 0.21% is possible and is just as beneficial for creep resistance, but the solubility of vanadium in the liquid alloy is limited.
- the equilibrium solubility as a function of the bath holding temperature is shown in FIG. figure 10 .
- the bath in order to maintain a 0.25% vanadium solution, the bath must be kept at a temperature of at least 745 ° C, a relatively high value for the casting of "shell” yokes (metal mold permanent) by gravity or low pressure.
- thermomechanical stress experienced by each particular model of part one can choose a level of tolerance adapted iron, knowing that the "high purity", especially with regard to iron, is a cost factor.
- a level of tolerance adapted iron knowing that the "high purity", especially with regard to iron, is a cost factor.
- the copper content of such hot-resistant alloys is typically in the range of 2 to 5%. Preferably, the range will be between 2.5%, to ensure a sufficiently high yield strength and heat resistance, and 4.2%, the approximate solubility limit of copper in a base containing from 4.5 to 10% of silicon and up to 0.25% of magnesium with dissolution at a temperature of less than or equal to 513 ° C.
- Manganese the Applicant has already identified in previous research described in the aforementioned article, published in "Men and Foundry” of February 2008, a manganese content of 0.08 to 0.20% improved the effect of zirconium on the resistance to creep at 300 ° C.
- Titanium acts in two joint modes: on the one hand, it promotes the refining of the primary aluminum grain, on the other hand, it contributes to creep resistance, as identified in the patent FR 2 841 164 , participating in the formation of AlSiZrTi dispersoid phases.
- Another way to refine the eutectic AISi is to add antimony (from 0.05 to 0.25%).
- Heat treatment the molded parts according to the invention are generally subjected to a heat treatment including dissolution, quenching and tempering.
- the dissolution of the alloys L to T was shortened at 5 h instead of 10 h.
- the resistance to mechanical fatigue at ambient temperature was measured in tension-compression, with a ratio R (minimum stress / maximum stress) of -1 for round test pieces with a diameter of 5 mm, also machined in the AFNOR shell blanks.
- the creep tests at 300 ° C. were carried out on test pieces machined to a diameter of 4 mm from the same AFNOR blanks, preheated for 100 hours at 300 ° C. before the actual test.
- the elastic limit increases by approximately 100 MPa while the fatigue life of the oligocyclic fatigue in the range extending from 220 to 270 MPa is multiplied by almost 10.
- vanadium has no significant effect on these two properties measured at room temperature.
- the increase of the copper content from 3.5 to 4.0% results in a gain of about 30 MPa on the yield strength and 15 MPa on the ultimate strength, but also by a loss of 1% on the lengthening, as shown by the comparison of figures 4 and 5 .
- the figure 7 further indicates that the joint additions of magnesium between 0.07 and 0.19% and vanadium between 0.17 and 0.21% can improve by approximately 8% the yield strength.
- the figure 8 allows to better visualize the importance of the interaction between vanadium and magnesium on the creep resistance at 300 ° C.

Unless stated otherwise, all the values relating to the chemical composition of the alloys are expressed in percentages by weight.
The alloys commonly used for the cylinder heads of automotive mass-produced vehicles are on the one hand alloys of the AlSi7Mg and AlSi10Mg type, optionally "doped" by an addition of 0.50% to 1% of copper, and on the other hand alloys of the AlSi5 family at 9Cu3Mg.
The alloys of the first type, AlSi7 (Cu) Mg and AlSi10 (Cu) Mg treated T5 (simple stabilization) and T7 (complete solution treatment, quenching and over-tempering) have sufficient mechanical properties up to about 250 ° C, but not at 300 ° C, which will nevertheless be reached by the inter-valve jumpers of the new generations of supercharged common-rail diesel engines, or even new gasoline engines with double turbocharging.
At 300 ° C, their yield strength and creep resistance are particularly low. On the other hand, thanks to good ductility throughout the temperature range from ambient to 250 ° C., they have satisfactory resistance to thermal fatigue cracking.
The alloys of the type AlSi5 to 9Cu3Mg0.25 to 0.5, which have a better resistance to heat, have on the other hand a rather low ductility which makes them very vulnerable to thermal fatigue cracking.
They are subdivided into a family of alloys with a low iron content, typically less than 0.20%, called primary or primary (resulting from electrolysis), which have good hot ductility but remain brittle at room temperature, and a family of so-called secondary alloys or secondary melting (from recycling) with higher iron content, from 0.40% to 0.80% and sometimes 1%, which have a low ductility both hot and ambient .
- AlSi5Cu3Mg with low iron content (0.15%) and in the T7 state: very good mechanical strength up to 250 ° C, becoming average at 300 ° C, low ductility at ambient temperature, becoming good at 250 and 300 ° C .
- AlSi5Cu3Mg with high iron content (0.7%) and in the F-state (without heat treatment): mechanical resistance to the average ambient, becoming relatively higher at 250 and 300 ° C, very low ductility over the entire range 20 - 300 ° C.
- AlSi7Mg0.3 without copper with a low iron content (0.15%) and in the T7 state: good mechanical resistance to the ambient, becoming very weak at 250 ° C, very good ductility over the whole range 20 - 300 ° vs.

- The alloy AlSi7Mg0.3, with addition of 0.50% of copper and in the T7 state, solution nowadays widely used industrially, allows a very sensible gain (+20%) yield strength at 250 ° C, without loss of elongation. But the gain brought by this limited addition of copper is totally lost at 300 ° C.
- The addition of 0.15% zirconium in the same alloy makes it possible to slightly improve the elastic limit at 300 ° C. (+ 10%) and especially to retard tertiary creep at the same temperature under a stress of 22 MPa.
- A new type of AlSi7Cu3.5MnVZrTi alloy without magnesium has been studied and characterized. It has excellent hot strength properties at 300 ° C and quite good ductility throughout the range of 20 - 300 ° C, but a low yield strength at room temperature (in the range of 190 to 235 MPa depending on its precise copper content).
More recent researches carried out by the applicant, and not published so far, have shown that the low-cycle fatigue resistance (high stresses and, consequently, low number of cycles) of this type of magnesium-free alloy was significantly greater. than that of the AlSi7Cu0.5Mg0.3 alloy, which constitutes a major handicap because the cylinder heads undergo, in particular due to thermal cycling related to the operating mode of the motors, alternating forces at very high stress close to the yield strength.
Given these considerations, it is clear that in terms of fatigue, there is a clear need to significantly improve the resistance to oligocyclic fatigue without degrading the polycyclic fatigue behavior.
- High yield strength from ambient to 300 ° C,
- Highly resistant oligocyclic fatigue
- Resistance to high polycyclic fatigue,
- Creep resistance at 300 ° C high,
- Good ductility over the entire ambient range up to 300 ° C (minimum elongation of 3% at room temperature, 20% at 250 ° C and 25% at 300 ° C).

Indeed, the addition of a small amount of magnesium, ie from 0.10% to 0.20%, makes it possible to considerably increase not only the yield stress at ambient temperature but also the low-cycle fatigue strength, and this all maintaining a satisfactory elongation.
The Applicant hypothesizes that this small addition of magnesium makes it possible to form a fraction of the hardening phase Q-A15Mg8Si6Cu2, more effective on cold resistance than the Al2Cu phase formed in the absence of magnesium, but that the clear predominance of copper (typically 3.5%) relative to magnesium means that the amount of Al2Cu phase, on the other hand more effective for the hot resistance, is not significantly reduced by the addition of magnesium, so that the hot properties (typically at 250 and 300 ° C) are not degraded.
Thus, and quite unexpectedly, the effect of magnesium is absolutely not linear in the
Indeed, for stresses of 220 and 270 MPa, the life of the specimens subjected to an alternating traction force (ie with a ratio R = minimum stress / maximum stress of -1) is multiplied by substantially 10 by the addition 0.10% magnesium.
Here again, the effect is absolutely not linear, the results for a magnesium content of 0.05% not being different from those obtained for a strictly zero content.
In the case of parts for which the cold elongation is not critical, we can tolerate levels up to 0.45% while, to maintain some ductility cold, we can accept up to 0.25%, and better still 0.20%.
Philips (Equilibrium Diagrams of Aluminium Alloy Systems. The Aluminium Development Association. Information Bulletin 25.
This makes it possible to apply a solution at 505 ° C., typically between 500 and 513 ° C., without risk of burning, with standard heat treatment equipment, whereas the alloys of the prior art are treated at 500 ° C. at most, and at 495 ° C in general.
- Surprisingly, the Applicant has observed the existence of a strong interaction between magnesium and vanadium on the elastic limit and moreover on the creep resistance at 300 ° C.
In fact, in a known way, these two elements do not act absolutely by the same metallurgical mechanism and these mechanisms of action are even quite opposite.
On the one hand, magnesium, a high diffusion coefficient eutectic element, participates in the structural hardening after tempering, by formation of intermetallic phases coherent with the aluminum matrix, in this case via the Q phase mentioned above, but progressively loses its hardening effect by coalescing said phase at 300 ° C and higher.
On the other hand and conversely, vanadium, peritectic element with very low diffusion coefficient, is present in solid solution enriched in the heart of dendrites and can possibly precipitate in the form of only semi-coherent dispersoids Al-V-Si which remain stable at high temperatures above 400 ° C.
Vanadium addition greater than 0.21% is possible and is just as beneficial for creep resistance, but the solubility of vanadium in the liquid alloy is limited.
En effet, la demanderesse a réalisé des essais approfondis pour déterminer la solubilité du vanadium en fonction de la température du bain de métal liquide, et cela dans un alliage selon l'invention, du type AlSi7Cu3.5MgMn0.30Zr0.20Ti0.20 contenant initialement 0.28 % de vanadium introduit et solubilisé à 780°C.Indeed, the Applicant has carried out extensive tests to determine the solubility of vanadium as a function of the temperature of the bath of liquid metal, and that in an alloy according to the invention, of the AlSi7Cu3.5MgMn0.30Zr0.20Ti0.20 type initially containing 0.28% vanadium introduced and solubilized at 780 ° C.
It is noted that in order to maintain a 0.25% vanadium solution, the bath must be kept at a temperature of at least 745 ° C, a relatively high value for the casting of "shell" yokes (metal mold permanent) by gravity or low pressure.
Levels of 0.21%, and even better 0.17%, allow a hold at 730 or 720 ° C much more compatible with said casting processes.
- Silicon: it is essential to obtain good foundry properties, such as flowability, absence of creasability, good supply of shrinkage.
For a content of less than 3%, these properties are insufficient for shell molding whereas for contents above 11% the shrinkage is too concentrated and elongation too low.
In addition, a compromise generally considered as optimum between these properties and the ductility is between 5 and 9%. This range corresponds to most applications of the cylinder head type of internal combustion engine.
Iron: It is well known that this element significantly reduces the elongation of Al-Si alloys. The examples described below confirm this in the case of the invention.
In the case of parts for which the cold elongation is not critical, one can tolerate contents up to 0.50% whereas, to preserve a certain ductility with cold, one can admit up to 0.30%, and for highly stressed parts including cold deformation, we will prefer a maximum of 0.19%, level specified by the standard NF EN 1706 for alloys high characteristics EN AC-21100, 42100, 42200 and 44000, and better still 0.12%.
The copper content of such hot-resistant alloys is typically in the range of 2 to 5%.
Manganèse : la demanderesse a déjà identifié lors de recherches précédentes décrites dans l'article précité, paru dans «Hommes et Fonderie » de février 2008, qu'une teneur en manganèse de 0.08 à 0.20 % améliorait l'effet du zirconium sur la résistance au fluage à 300°C.Manganese: the Applicant has already identified in previous research described in the aforementioned article, published in "Men and Foundry" of February 2008, a manganese content of 0.08 to 0.20% improved the effect of zirconium on the resistance to creep at 300 ° C.
- Zinc: If one chooses to use the variant with a high iron content, up to 0.50%, it is necessary, in order to profit economically, to also tolerate a level of zinc content up to 0.30%. In the preferred case where a high purity iron alloy of primary origin is used, the zinc content may advantageously be limited to 0.10%.
- Nickel: like zinc, this element, which significantly reduces the elongation, can be tolerated at a content of up to 0.30% in an alloy with an iron content of up to 0.50%, but it will preferably be limited to 0.10% when a high ductility is sought.
- Zirconium: the Applicant has already identified, in previous research, the positive effect of zirconium on the resistance to hot creep through the formation of stable dispersoidal phases of the AlSiZrTi type.
These two objectives are simultaneously achieved for contents between 0.01 and 0.25%, and preferably between 0.05 and 0.20%.
- Modification of the eutectic is generally desirable in order to improve the elongation of the Al-Si alloys. This modification is achieved by the addition of one or more strontium (from 30 to 500 ppm), sodium (from 20 to 100 ppm) or calcium (from 30 to 120 ppm) elements.
Une autre façon d'affiner l'eutectique AISi est d'ajouter de l'antimoine (de 0.05 à 0.25%).Another way to refine the eutectic AISi is to add antimony (from 0.05 to 0.25%).
Heat treatment: the molded parts according to the invention are generally subjected to a heat treatment including dissolution, quenching and tempering.
In the case of the internal combustion engine cylinder heads, it is generally used in this case a type of treatment T7, with over-income which has the advantage of stabilizing the room.
But for other applications, including an insert for a hot part of a molded part, a type T6 treatment is also possible.
In its details, the invention will be better understood with the aid of the following examples, which are however not limiting in nature.

- Dissolution from 10 h to 515 ° C for magnesium-free alloys (castings A, D and G) and from 10 h to 505 ° C for alloys containing 0.05% to 0.19% magnesium (castings B, C, E, F, H, K and L to T).
- Quenched with water at 20 ° C
- 5 hours at 220 ° C for magnesium-free alloys (castings A, D and G), 4 hours at 210 ° C for B, C, E, F, H, K alloys and 5 hours at 200 ° C for alloys L to T. Castings D, G, F and K were further characterized at room temperature only with a heat treatment of 10 h at 515 ° C for magnesium-free D and G and 10 h at 505 ° C for F and K with 0.10% magnesium, followed for all four castings with a water quench at 20 ° C and a tempering of 5 h at 200 ° C in order to be more directly compared to the L to T.
Dans une autre variante de traitement thermique, on a raccourci la mise en solution des alliages L à T à 5 h au lieu de 10 h.In another variant of heat treatment, the dissolution of the alloys L to T was shortened at 5 h instead of 10 h.
- at room temperature, in the case of the above-mentioned AFNOR specimen, machined at 13.8 mm, measurement base of the length 69 mm, under the conditions of the EN 10002-1 standard.
- at 250 and 300 ° C, the specimens being taken from the same AFNOR shell blanks with a diameter of 18 mm, then machined to a diameter of 8 mm and preheated for 100 hours at the temperature in question so that most of the structural evolution is accomplished , then stripped at 250 or 300 ° C under the conditions of EN 10002-5.
The resistance to mechanical fatigue at ambient temperature was measured in tension-compression, with a ratio R (minimum stress / maximum stress) of -1 for round test pieces with a diameter of 5 mm, also machined in the AFNOR shell blanks.
The creep tests at 300 ° C. were carried out on test pieces machined to a diameter of 4 mm from the same AFNOR blanks, preheated for 100 hours at 300 ° C. before the actual test.
The results of tensile tests at 20, 250 and 300 ° C are given in Table 3 (tensile strength R m in MPa, yield strength R p0.2 in MPa and elongation at break A in%) for alloys whose composition also in Table 3, those of the fatigue tests at room temperature in Table 4 (F-loads in MPa), and those of the creep tests in Table 5 (elongation A in% as a function of the hold time h at 300 ° C, from 0 to 300 h, under 30 MPa).
- With regard to static mechanical characteristics (
figure 4 ) and resistance to mechanical fatigue at room temperature (figure 6 ), for alloys with a copper content of 3.5%, we can clearly see the intense and non-linear effect of magnesium.
Quasi nul entre 0 et 0.05 %, il est par contre très fort entre 0.05 et 0.10 %. En effet, la limite d'élasticité augmente alors de sensiblement 100 MPa tandis que la durée de vie en fatigue oligocyclique dans le domaine s'étendant de 220 à 270 MPa est multipliée par presque 10.Almost zero between 0 and 0.05%, it is against very strong between 0.05 and 0.10%. In fact, the elastic limit increases by approximately 100 MPa while the fatigue life of the oligocyclic fatigue in the range extending from 220 to 270 MPa is multiplied by almost 10.
From 0.10% to 0.19%, there is then a plateau of static mechanical characteristics at ambient quite unexpected.
As predictable, however, vanadium has no significant effect on these two properties measured at room temperature.
With regard to the mechanical characteristics at 300 ° C., a particular objective of the new type of alloy according to the invention, it is noted in Table 3 that the ductility is very high (greater than 25% for all cases with solution dissolution). 10 h).
- L'alliage C contenant 0.10 % de magnésium, mais sans vanadium, ne résiste pas 300 h à 300°C sous 30 MPa ; il se rompt entre 150 et 200 h avec une déformation comprise entre 2.4 et 4 % ;
- L'alliage G, sans magnésium, mais contenant 0.21 % de vanadium, résiste 300 h, mais présente une déformation moyenne finale de 2.83 % ;
- Alloy C containing 0.10% magnesium, but without vanadium, does not withstand 300 hours at 300 ° C at 30 MPa; it breaks between 150 and 200 h with a strain of between 2.4 and 4%;
- The alloy G, without magnesium, but containing 0.21% of vanadium, resists 300 h, but has a final average deformation of 2.83%;
- Alloys F and K, both containing 0.10% magnesium, the first 0.17% and the second 0.21% vanadium, have behaviors substantially identical and much better than G and C; no break is observed, the average deformations are only 0.60 and 0.54%, which is not significantly different considering the dispersion between test pieces.
Increasing the iron content from 0.10% to 0.19% reduces the elongation at room temperature by about 30% relative, with or without HIP treatment; this is clear by comparing the plateau level for a magnesium content of 0.11 to 0.19% of the Q - R - S alloys with that of the alloy T in Table 3. At 250 and 300 ° C, the effect of this same increase becomes negligible.
