A hooking unit i.e. yoke, is located on the grooves for hooking the boom with the shell. A guiding unit i.e. male hasp, of the cordage is formed by a set of rods fixed inside the shell, where the brake is made of stainless steel, aluminum or composite material.

Description

Objet de l'inventionObject of the invention

The present invention relates to a device intended to be fixed or to be integrated into the boom of a sailboat to control the movement. It relates in particular to a boom brake which, in cooperation with a rope, will slow the abrupt movements of the boom around the mast in case of untimely jibe.

Etat de la techniqueState of the art

The problem of violent and untimely movements of the boom of a sailboat are well known to sailors who generally try to prevent sudden movements of the boom, especially in downwind, using a braking device called "boom brake". Such a boom brake provides effective safety against bodily injury and damage to the mast.

There are many types of boom brakes generally based on braked pulleys or rope deflections (Wichard) that can handle boom travel.

The documents FR 2 640 932 ; EP 0 630 806 and US 6,085,679 disclose a boom brake having a relatively complex configuration based on a set of pulleys and guiding members of the rope. The deflections around the pulleys determine the braking level of the travel of the boom.

The document EP 0 133 713 discloses a boom brake based on a spiral tube positioned within a housing, the rope being braked by the passage within the tube. Here, the relationship between the diameter of the tube and the diameter of the rope determines the level of braking that can be achieved. The document FR 2 521 096 is also based on the principle of a deviation of the rope slipped into a spiral tube.

The documents US 4,941,420 and GB 2299798 disclose a boom brake based on the spiral winding of the rope around a drum. When the rope relaxes, the spiral around the drum is no longer maintained and is undone with the result that the brake no longer works.

The documents DE 19844871 A1 ; US 4,630,564 and WO 83/03806 disclose a boom brake based on a damper usually provided with a spring.

Most of the aforementioned boom brakes, however, have one of the following drawbacks:
  • the size, weight, ease and therefore the speed of implementation. Some boom brakes are not adjustable or are disrupted as a result of use in contact with salt water and sand, which are conditions commonly encountered on sailboats.

The ease of use and construction of a boom brake is absolutely essential to ensure its sustainable operation at sea.

Description détaillée de l'inventionDetailed description of the invention

As mentioned above, sophisticated boom brakes do not withstand the conditions of use at sea for a long time. Initial settings change rapidly as ropes and pulleys come into contact with the sea. sea water and sand.

The present invention provides a boom brake 1 which according to a first embodiment of the invention is in the form of a simple shell closed on both sides (drum) of stainless material having on its peripheral face a relief consisting at least three calibrated grooves 2 whose radius in section is close to the sectional radius of the ropes used. These grooves guide the spiral rope around the ferrule while preventing the strands from overlapping. This configuration allows up to three dead turns around the shell, the number of turns and the diameter of the shell and that of the ropes associated with the grooves regulate the braking of the boom.

An example of a possible stainless material for the manufacture of the boom brake according to the invention is stainless steel.

If we take the example of stainless steel to make the drum, we can cut a slice of a stainless steel pipe. The shell is then stamped to create grooves 2 spiral. Concretely, one can for example use a stainless steel pipe with outside diameter of about 114 mm and a thickness of 2 mm. The cut slice will have a length of about 66 mm. By stamping the ferrule formed by this tube end with 12 mm diameter grooves and leaving 5 mm between each groove, a screw pitch is obtained on the 17 mm spiral.

In the first embodiment of the invention, the boom brake 1 also comprises a stirrup 3 on the central groove of the drum for fixing the assembly to the boom. On both sides equidistant from the central stirrup, on the external grooves are fixed two bridges 4 to guide the arrival and the exit of the rope 5 on the boom brake 1 according to the invention (see figures 1 , 3 and 5 ).

The stirrups 3 and the bridges 4 are not simple rods 6 welded to the peripheral surface of the drum. The rods 6 extend on the contrary to the inside of the drum allowing welding at two locations of the rod (see figure 7 ).

When the stirrups 3 and the bridges 4 are fixed, the two covers are welded to the drum to seal it tightly and to solidify the assembly.

(Voir figure 8)According to a second embodiment of the invention, the boom brake is directly integrated into the boom of the sailboat. Here the spiral profile of the boom is an integral part of the boom which can for example be aluminum. In this embodiment of the invention the presence of a hooking means 3 to the boom 8 and guiding 4 of the rope 5 is no longer necessary. In this case, a window 10 is provided for winding the rope 5 in a spiral around the boom brake integrated in the boom. (See figure 8 )

The string 5 is simply passed around the shell following the grooves so as to make two or three turns dead depending on the desired braking. The ferrule may for example be attached to the ring for receiving the tan-low or be directly integrated into the boom. The rope 5 is then attached to the flat edges of each side of the boat (see figure 4 ). The braking can then be adjusted by tending more or less string 5.

It is obvious that for large boats, it is possible to increase the diameter and the number of grooves on the shell of the boom brake 1.

  • légèreté de l'ensemble, construction compacte, ce qui rend l'ensemble facilement manipulable et peu encombrant tout en limitant le poids de l'embarcation ;
  • absence de nécessité d'entretien comme le graissage ou le nettoyage du fait qu'il n'y a aucune partie mobile du type ressort, poulie ou engrenage ;
  • absence d'usure exagérée du cordage du fait que le freinage ne s'obtient pas par des déviations fortes à travers des ouvertures ou des broches mais simplement par un contact en douceur avec les rainures en spirale ;
The main advantages of the boom brake according to the invention are the following:
  • lightness of the assembly, compact construction, which makes the assembly easily manipulated and compact while limiting the weight of the boat;
  • no need for maintenance such as greasing or cleaning because there is no moving part of the spring type, pulley or gear;
  • absence of excessive wear of the rope as braking is not achieved by strong deviations through openings or pins but simply by gentle contact with the spiral grooves;
  • modularity of the concept since the brake according to the invention can easily adapt to several boat sizes by simply increasing the number of grooves.
