Definitions

  • the invention relates to a wheelchair provided with an anti-tip protection.
  • Wheelchairs can be or become unstable, for instance when a user moves over uneven terrain, rides over humps, thresholds or the like or, for instance, leans back heavily. A sitting or lying position of a user can also render a wheelchair somewhat unstable.
  • wheelchairs may be provided with an anti-tip protection.
  • an extra wheel may be provided centrally behind the wheelchair, which wheel may push on the ground behind the rear wheels of the wheelchair when the wheelchair tips slightly backwards, thereby preventing the wheelchair from tipping over.
  • Such an anti-tip protection has as a drawback that it is not adjustable.
  • This construction further requires modifications to the wheelchair which render the wheelchair less usable. The collapsibility may be hindered, the free space under the wheelchair can be limited and the like.
  • US-4,805,925 discloses an adjustable rear anti-tip means that includes a pair of angled metal tubes in which a pair of extension tubes are telescopically and adjustably received. A pair of rollers are rotatably mounted on the end of each extension tube.
  • WO2007013731 discloses a wheel chair having front wheels and rear wheels and including a special construction by means of which a user can move along an up step and a down step having a certain height by himself without any assistance by an additional driving apparatus or other people.
  • the special construction includes a bent gear rail that can be moved along a bent gear rail guide which is fixed at the main frame of the wheelchair.
  • the gear rail carries at both ends an assistant wheel. By displacing the gear rail, the front wheels or the rear wheels can be lifted from the ground in order to be able to mount an up step or to descent from a down step.
  • the known wheel chair also includes an assistant frame that is hingedly connected to the main frame with one end and that carries an assistant wheel on the other end and that is biased by a spring in so that the assistant wheel is pushed downwardly on the ground.
  • This assistant frame is provided for decreasing the impact applied to the driving rear wheel when the wheel chair comes down from the step.
  • An adjustable anti-tip protection is not disclosed in WO2007013731 .
  • the object of the invention is to provide a wheelchair with an alternative anti-tip protection.
  • a further object of the invention is to provide a wheelchair with an anti-tip protection with which at least one of the drawbacks of known wheelchairs is at least partly solved.
  • the invention provides a wheel chair according to claim 1.
  • Adjustability of the at least one anti-tip wheel can offer the advantage that the anti-tip protection can be adjusted to, for instance, a base on which the wheel chair is used, or the weight, the build or the sitting or lying position of the user. It can further offer the advantage that the wheelchair can be simple in construction and use. Owing to the downward bent form, the advantage is achieved that the profile sliding from the frame tube allows for the respective anti-tip wheel to move both rearward and downward, along the curvature, so that displacement of the anti-tip wheel backwards will be lesser than if the profile and the rearmost part of the frame tube were straight. As a result, in top plan view, the or each anti-tip wheel can remain completely or virtually within the contour of the wheelchair.
  • a wheelchair can offer an anti-tip protection which comprises at least two anti-tip wheels which are position-adjustable, preferably independently of each other.
  • wheels of the anti-tip protection are understood to mean at least but not exclusively anti-tip wheels with fixed or pivotable suspension, rollers, balls or gliding support means.
  • the embodiments shown have four wheels, two of which are large, manually drivable rear wheels and two of which are pivotable, small front wheels.
  • other configurations can also be utilized within the invention, such as with three wheels, electrically driven, provided with two large wheels at the front and one or two small wheels at the rear, or wheelchairs with three or four equally large or small wheels.
  • front or front side of the wheel chair will be understood to mean the side leading in the driving direction P, rear or rear side the side trailing in driving direction, side is understood to mean one or each side of the wheelchair, approximately parallel to the driving direction P.
  • the wheelchair In normal condition, the wheelchair will stand with wheels at the bottom side on a surface while at the top side a seat and/or back rest can be provided.
  • FIGs. 1 - 4 an undercarriage of a wheelchair 2 is shown, provided with two rear wheels 3 and two pivotable front wheels 4.
  • the rear wheels 3 are provided with a hoop 5 with which they can be manually driven for driving of the wheelchair by a person sitting or lying in the wheelchair.
  • the wheels 3, 4 are connected to a frame 6 which is substantially formed from freely bent frame tubes from, for instance, aluminum, magnesium or a different metal or alloy, composite material or plastic.
  • the frame 6 comprises two bent frame tubes 7, one on each side 8.
  • Each of these frame tubes 7 comprises a rearmost part 9 and a foremost part 10.
  • An open rear end 11 of the rearmost part 9 is connected to a shaft support 12 in which a shaft 13 such as, for instance, a dropout of a rear wheel 3 is connected.
  • the rearmost part 9 extends, bent forwards and slightly upwards, preferably with a constant radius R. Via an intermediate bend 14, the rearmost part 9 is connected to the foremost part 10 which extends substantially downwards and somewhat forwards adjacent an open bottom end 15.
  • the two frame tubes 7 are substantially each others' mirror image, mirrored in a center plane, as shown in Fig 3 by the chain dotted line V-V, which extends halfway between the two frame tubes 7 at right angles to the ground G. Between the two shaft supports 12, a cross bar 16 is provided.
  • a footrest 22 is connected in the open ends 15, a footrest 22 is connected.
  • the footrest 22 comprises a tube part with a middle part 23 and two upward bent ends 24, which ends 24 have been introduced into the open ends 15 and are connected therein so as to be adjustable with second coupling means, for instance through pins, screws or bolts 25 introduced or screwed through the frame tube 7 and an opening in the respective end 24.
  • second coupling means for instance through pins, screws or bolts 25 introduced or screwed through the frame tube 7 and an opening in the respective end 24.
  • FIG. 6 an alternative embodiment of an undercarriage 1 or at least an alternative embodiment of a footrest 22 is shown.
  • the foremost parts 10 of the frame tubes 7 are curved with a radius R2, as are the ends 24 of the tube 23 of the footrest 22.
  • the footrest 22 can be adjusted by sliding the ends 24 into or around the parts 10 and securing them in a desired position with the aid of the second coupling means 25.
  • the curvature R2 of the part 10 and the end 24 cooperating therewith with this displacement, the footrest will follow a curved line.
  • the forward and rearward displacement of the footrest will be limited with respect to use of a straight part 10 of the frame tube 7 and a corresponding end 24.
  • the parts 9 and 10 can both lie in one plane or in different planes, wherein the or each plane can extend parallel to the plane V or can include an angle therewith, such that the respective planes intersect in a line parallel to the ground or including an angle therewith.
  • the two parts 10 can extend parallel to each other or, for instance, be bent towards each other, such that the ends 15 are brought together closer when they are slid downward or, conversely, further apart.
  • the tube 23 under the footrest 22 is preferably length-adjustable, for compensating the relative movement of the two ends 15 with respect to each other.
  • the two ends 9 can be slightly bent towards each other or, conversely, apart, such that upon movement of the anti -tip wheels 31, they move together or apart.
  • This can optionally be adjustable, so that a user himself can determine how the anti-tip wheels 31 and/or the footrest 22 move(s) upon adjustment.
  • a second frame tube 18 is provided, which extends forwards from the respective shaft support 12, with a substantially horizontal first part 19 and a downward bent second part 20.
  • Each second part 20 is open at the free bottom side 21.
  • a support 26 of a pivotable front wheel 4 is introduced and secured.
  • the top and bottom frame tubes are mutually connected by cross tubes 40.
  • a bent profile 27 such as a tube profile or rod is introduced, from the rear ends 11.
  • the bent profile 27 has at least one part with a curve radius R which fits the curvature of said rearmost part 9.
  • the cross section of the profile 27 is chosen such that this part is slideable in the rearmost part 9.
  • the end 28 of the profile 27 located in the frame tube 7 is provided with a stop 29 which can serve as slide bearing.
  • the rearmost part 9 and the profile 27 can be provided with fitting profiles such that the profile 27 can indeed slide in the direction F in the rear part but cannot rotate therein.
  • a wheel 31 is provided, preferably with a fixed direction of rotation, matching the driving direction P.
  • a series of openings 32 is provided in the profile 27 . Adjacent the end 11 of the rearmost part 9, a pin 33 is provided which is biased by a spring 34 in the direction of said openings 32. If the profile 27 is moved with an opening 32 under the pin 33, the pin will engage in the opening and thus block movement of the profile 27 with respect to the frame tube 7. By withdrawing the pin 33 against the action of the spring 34, sliding can be enabled again, so that the position of the anti-tip wheels 31 can be changed. With this, an anti-tip protection 50 is provided with cooperating blocking means.
  • the frame of the wheelchair has an open design.
  • the space between the wheels and under the seat 35 is virtually completely free. This offers advantages to both the user and the assistant, for instance when pushing the wheelchair.
  • the anti-tip wheels 31 can thus be set at different heights above the ground or, optionally, rest thereon. Backward tipping of the wheelchair will be prevented by the anti-tip wheels 31.
  • they are mutually independently adjustable, each time the best setting can be selected. Furthermore, they can be pulled up adjacent the end 11, so that when, for instance, storing the wheelchair, they do not hinder the users when the rear wheels have been removed.
  • the radius R of the bent rearmost part 9 is preferably larger than that of the largest wheel 3, 4 of the wheelchair, in this case the rear wheel 3, for instance between one and a half times and eight times as large. In the exemplary embodiment shown, the radius R is approximately equal to the diameter of the respective rear wheel.
  • the advantage is achieved that the profile 27 sliding from the frame tube 7 allows for the respective anti-tip wheel 31 to move both rearward and downward, along the curvature, so that displacement of the wheel backwards will be lesser than if the profile 27 and the rearmost part 9 of the frame tube 7 were straight.
  • the or each anti-tip wheel 31 can remain completely or virtually within the contour C of the wheelchair, as drawn in Fig. 3 .
  • the anti-tip protection can be provided in a frame tube with a part formed as the rearmost part 9 of the frame tube 7, in which a profile 27 with anti-tip wheel 31 is slideably included, once more in a curved manner.
  • This anti tip-protection can then be separately connected to a frame of a wheelchair, instead of being integrated therein as shown in the Figures.
  • only one wheel 31 can be provided in an anti-tip protection.
  • the profile 27 can be arranged at the outside of the frame tube 7.
  • the frame or at least the undercarriage can be completely or partly foldable and/or detachable, armrests, lower leg rests, headrests and the like can be provided, seat and/or backrest may be formed differently, for instance from flexible material, handles or a push bar can be provided, profiles 27 of an anti-tip protection can be mutually coupled, the blocking means can be designed differently, for instance electrically operated, pneumatic, screw means, split pins or other means known to the skilled person.
