Definitions

  • the present invention relates to the field of mail processing and more particularly relates to a franking machine of simple and inexpensive design intended to be used for the postage of small mail items.
  • the present invention relates to a franking machine overcoming the aforementioned drawbacks and therefore having a still lower cost while preserving the small size, the robustness and the ease of use of the machine of the prior art.
  • Another object of the invention is to provide a franking machine for determining the tariff category of mail items without integrating a weighing module.
  • said synchronization means comprise a displacement sensor for acquiring successive positions of the mail article during said manual removal.
  • said displacement sensor may comprise an encoder wheel in contact with an upper surface of said mail article and whose rotation is proportional to the displacement of said mail article in said insertion slot during said manual removal or still a non-contact optical sensor disposed opposite an upper surface of the mail article.
  • it further comprises a removable protective cover for protecting said print head and synchronized moving means for automatically removing said removable protective cover with the introduction of said mail item into the machine, keeping said cover away from detachable protection during said manual removal of said mail piece and repositioning said removable protective cover once said manual removal completed.
  • Said removable protective cover can be articulated at the end of a withdrawal arm which can pivot about an axis under the effect of the advancement of said mail piece in said insertion slot and whose free end is terminated by a finger intended to cooperate with a contact surface of a holding trigger whose pivoting about an axis against an elastic thrust means is obtained by a flexible link which one end is fixed to the end of said holding trigger opposite to said contact surface and the other end is secured to an actuating roller in contact with said mail piece.
  • said plate is provided with a perpendicular masking wing intended to cooperate with a set of sensors mounted in the frame to determine, by the crossing of different predetermined thresholds, the thickness of said mail piece.
  • said insertion slot is open on two of the perpendicular sides of said frame and defines two referencing walls for respectively the upper and the transverse front longitudinal sides of said mail piece in order to wedge said article of mail to its upper right corner. .
  • the machine according to the invention further comprises a first sensor disposed at the junction of said longitudinal and transverse referencing walls of said insertion slot to check that said mail item is correctly positioned at the bottom of said slot. insertion, at least a first set of sensors disposed on a same line parallel to said transverse referencing wall at predetermined distances from said longitudinal referencing wall to define different predetermined width thresholds for said mail piece and at least a second set of sensors arranged on a same line under said insertion slot to define different predetermined thickness thresholds for said mail item.
  • the invention also relates to the method of printing a postal imprint on a mail piece according to claim 13.
  • the masking or not of a plurality of width and / or thickness sensors by said mail item determines the category of mail to which said mail item belongs.
  • FIGS. 1 to 4 illustrate in the form of block diagrams a franking machine for mailpieces according to the invention.
  • Mail items are standardized, standard-sized articles each intended to receive a printed postal imprint, as is customary, at the top right of these mail items.
  • This new franking machine comprises in a substantially parallelepiped frame 10 an insertion slot 12 for receiving a mail item, means for printing the mail article, typically an inkjet printing head 14 formed at least one row (e.g. two rows 14A, 14B) of ink ejection nozzles and a disposable ink cartridge 14C for supplying these ink nozzles, a plurality of optical preference sensors for determining the format of the article of mail introduced into the franking machine or to determine the movement of the mail item.
  • an inkjet printing head 14 formed at least one row (e.g. two rows 14A, 14B) of ink ejection nozzles and a disposable ink cartridge 14C for supplying these ink nozzles
  • a plurality of optical preference sensors for determining the format of the article of mail introduced into the franking machine or to determine the movement of the mail item.
  • This plate is advantageously provided with a perpendicular 16A masking flange or wing intended to cooperate with a set of optical preference sensors mounted in the frame to determine, by the crossing of different predetermined thresholds, the thickness of the mail article. .
  • the insertion slot 12 for the introduction of a mailpiece into the machine which has a height corresponding to the maximum thickness of mailpieces that can be processed by the machine, typically 20 mm, is open on two perpendicular sides of the frame which, by defining two reference walls 12B, 12C for respectively the upper and transverse longitudinal sides of the front of the mail item, allows to wedge the mail item to its upper right corner.
  • the print head 14 may comprise one (see FIG. Figure 4A ) or two rows of ink ejection nozzles protected by a removable protective cover 14D to prevent clogging of these nozzles by dried ink when they are not used.
  • This cover is automatically moved, in synchronism with the movement of the article of mail, both during its introduction and during its withdrawal via synchronized moving means having a suitable kinematics. More particularly, the removable protective cover is articulated to the end of a withdrawal arm 20 which can pivot about an axis 22 under the effect of the advancement of the mail article in the insertion slot .
  • This withdrawal arm is terminated at its free end by a finger 20A intended to cooperate with a contact surface 24A of a holding trigger 24 whose pivoting about an axis 24B and against a resilient element 24C is obtained by a flexible link 26, one end 26A is fixed to the end of the holding trigger opposite to the contact surface and the other end 26B is secured to a roller 28 mounted, such as the plate 16, on the 18A axis and ensuring like this a veneer of the mail article against the upper surface of the slot 12.
  • Two sets of optical sensors arranged at different locations of the frame allow on the one hand to detect different widths of the mail item (to which correspond particular lengths due to the standardization of mail items) and on the other hand, as explained previously, the thickness of the mail item. More particularly, a first sensor 30 disposed at the inside angle of the insertion slot 12 at the junction of the longitudinal and transverse referencing walls makes it possible to verify that the mail piece is correctly positioned at the bottom of this slot. insertion and in particular that its upper right corner is in contact with the inside angle of the insertion slot.
  • a first series of sensors such as second 32, third 34 and fourth 36 sensors are arranged on the same line parallel to the reference transverse wall 12C at predetermined distances from the slot reference longitudinal wall 12B (and depending on the applicable postal regulation), to define different predetermined width thresholds for the mail item.
  • these sensors will advantageously be positioned at 89 mm, 108 mm and 155 mm.
  • these positions will of course be different. It is also possible to consider a so-called universal configuration that could be applied in different markets, only the sensors involved in a given market are then activated during manufacture or when the machines are distributed on this market.
  • a second series of sensors for example fifth 38, sixth 40 and seventh 42 sensors are also arranged on the same line under the surface of the slot to define by masking different predetermined thresholds of thickness for the mail article.
  • these sensors will advantageously be positioned at 0.4mm, 6.4mm and 19.1mm.
  • these positions will of course be different.
  • a last displacement sensor 44 is provided to synchronize the control of the impression of the postal impression to the displacement of the mail article in the insertion slot.
  • This sensor may be of mechanical type and constituted for example by an encoder wheel in contact with the upper surface of the mail article and whose rotation proportional to the linear displacement of the mail article allows, as is known, this synchronization .
  • This sensor 44A can also, as illustrated by Figure 4A be optical-type contact and disposed opposite the upper surface of the mail article, acquire successive positions of the mail article to deliver synchronization pulses for printing the postal impression.
  • Such a sensor is for example described in the US5,495,103 of which the plaintiff is an assignee.
  • the machine further comprises a simplified user interface 46 for the only input of the postal data necessary for its determination (geographical area of destination and requested services) and secure processing means 48 connected to the various sensors, to the user interface and to the print head to order printing of the postal imprint.
  • a simplified user interface 46 for the only input of the postal data necessary for its determination (geographical area of destination and requested services) and secure processing means 48 connected to the various sensors, to the user interface and to the print head to order printing of the postal imprint.
  • it also comprises removable memory means 50, of the memory card type, comprising graphic data allowing the impression of the postal fingerprint and possibly postage accounting data, ascending and descending counters in particular to allow, for example , a self-service use of the machine.
  • these removable means can be fixed to the frame and then accompanied by connection means to a remote server system, so as to make this franking machine a communicating machine including for reloading and sending of postal statistics.
  • the figure 1 illustrates the rest position of the machine in which no mail item has yet been introduced. Under the action of the return means 18B, the plate 16 bears against the high reference surface 12A of the insertion slot and none of the width and thickness sensors are masked. The displacement sensor 44 is inoperative and the print head 14 is protected by its protective cover 14D.
  • the figure 2 illustrates a second position in which a mail item of a given size has been introduced into the machine and is wedged at the bottom of the insertion slot 12.
  • this abutment (referencing) position the article of mail that has passed a first time in front of the displacement sensor but without this does however cause a particular synchronization action at the level of the processing means.
  • the progress of the mail article has had the effect of to lift the withdrawal arm 20 to a horizontal position in which the finger 20A has been placed on the contact surface 24A of the holding trigger 24 and remains under the pressure of the thrust spring 24C, this lifting causing further pivoting about the axis 22 will also actuate the removal of the protective cover 14D releasing the ink ejection nozzles.
  • the secure processing means 48 to which are connected these sensors to determine from an indication of the format of the mail item (width which is associated with a length and thickness) the tariff category to which this article of mail belongs and therefore the amount of postage to which it must be submitted. Therefore, the postage can be started and this availability of the machine for this operation can be reported to the operator at its user interface or by any other appropriate means, such as a sound or light indicator (not shown).
  • This signal is an invitation for the operator to remove the mail item from the machine in the image of the figure 3 which illustrates an intermediate position of withdrawal.
  • the bottom optical sensor 30 is unmasked but not yet the other optical sensors and the protective cover 14D is still clear because the withdrawal arm 20 is maintained in its previous position by the holding trigger 24 whose contact surface 24A supports the finger 20A of the withdrawal arm.
  • the displacement sensor 44 will successively acquire the different positions of the mailpiece, this time thus conventionally ensuring the synchronization of the printing of the postal stamp, regardless of the speed of withdrawal of the mailpiece.
  • mail item that is to say that it is done quickly or not (a stop of the withdrawal causing of course a stop printing).
  • synchronized motorization means no longer exist and it is the operator in removing the mail item from the machine that will operate the printing process of the postage stamp. This results in a franking machine of simpler design and high reliability due to the absence of moving mechanical parts.
  • the franking machine of the present invention is particularly adapted to small numbers (at most a few tens per day) and, by its simplified and robust structure, it can be implemented in various environments, not only office, but also industrial or commercial.
