Definitions
- the present invention relates in general to foldable wheelchairs, and more particularly, to wheelchairs which have X-shaped cross-bracing frame assemblies that fold or scissor to allow the side frames of the wheelchair to be moved between a spaced apart deployed position for use and a folded position for storage or transport.
- Foldable wheelchairs comprising a link element as disclosed in US 4,989,890 and US 6,050,582 require important efforts to fold and/or unfold. Especially for a wheelchair user constrained to remain in a sitting position, unfolding of the wheelchair is difficult. This problem is still present even with certain presently commercialised foldable wheelchairs. In some situations, it is necessary that staff performs the folding / unfolding for the wheelchair user. Furthermore, there is a risk of shutting in one's fingers or of other injury when the wheelchair, following the use of substantial force, suddenly gives in and passes from an unfolded to a folded position, or vice versa.
- the geometry of the cross-bracing arrangement of the foldable wheelchair using a link element is at the origin of the exhausting folding process. More particularly, there is the problem that during the folding process, the side frames have the tendency not to stay in parallel but assume a V-shape, with the upper side frames staying apart from each other. This can also be referred to as a splaying or tilting of the side frames during folding, due to the geometry of the articulation provided by the link element together with the cross-struts, comprising as many as seven pivoting axis.
- the link element experiences forces in its longitudinal axis during folding, which prevents the side frames from remaining parallel during the folding movement.
- the aspect of convenience and easy manipulation is a main objective underlying the present invention. It is a goal to provide a foldable wheelchair, that can be folded and/or unfolded with less effort than any other foldable wheelchair available on the market. Preferably, such an effortlessly foldable and/or unfoldable wheelchair still presents a high stability and/or firmness, in the unfolded position of use as well as during the folding process and in the folded position of storage and transport.
- the present invention provides a foldable wheelchair, according to claim 1.
- the wheelchair of the present invention features an unmet easiness and effortlessness in the folding process. This advantage is combined with low weight, but also with a high firmness and stability also when folded and during the folding process.
- said seat profile is positioned by the aid of said at least one support element.
- said at least one support element is a plastic element, which enables a positioned connection between said seat profile and said longitudinal profile, and which element prevents direct contact of metallic parts of said seat profile and said longitudinal frame profile, respectively, in the position of use.
- said support element in said deployed position, is in a position of contact or close-to-contact with at least one lateral left and/or right part of said seat profile, or, if the support element is attached to the seat profile, with at least one lateral left and/or right part of said longitudinal profile, wherein said position of contact or close-to-contact opposes to the lateral displacement of said seat profile with respect to said longitudinal profile, thereby stabilising said wheelchair with respect to relative lateral movement of said side frames with respect to the seat profiles.
- said substantially vertical frame structure comprises a telescope profile guiding structure in which or along which said at least one profile of said telescope element is telescopically and/or translatorily guided.
- said seat profiles are prevented from directly abutting on said telescope profile guiding structure.
- said seat profile is kept in position by said at least one support element.
- the vertical side frame structure comprises and/or carries said telescope profile guiding structure.
- said telescope profile guiding structure is itself a profile, for example a tube.
- said support element and said telescope profile guiding structure are distinct and/or separate structural elements, which, preferably, are not in direct contact with each other.
- said vertical side frame structure comprises a profile with a free lumen inside.
- it is a tube, wherein an upper end of said profile and/or said tube abuts against a bottom surface of said longitudinal frame profile and/or wherein said upper end is situated at a vertical level equal to or below the level of a top surface of said longitudinal frame profile.
- the vertical side frame structure thus preferably does not extend vertically above the uppermost surface of the upper side frame profile, in particular at the connection between said side frame structure and said upper side frame profile.
- an opening is provided on a top surface of said longitudinal frame profile, and wherein an inner telescope profile, is guided through said opening into said substantially vertical frame structure.
- the present invention preferably concerns a foldable wheelchair with adjustable drive wheels.
- Adjustable drive wheels refers to the possibility of modifying the rear-to-front position and/or the vertical height of the rear driving wheel. Adjustability of the drive wheels as such is important as it allows the adaptation of a wheelchair to a specific user, for example.
- FIG 1 some elements of the wheelchair of the present invention have been removed, in order to provide a better view to the frame assembly of the wheelchair.
- the large right drive wheel and the small right castor wheel have been omitted, as well as the seat plate and the back upholstery.
- a left castor wheel is shown in an isolated manner, at its approximate position when attached to the left side frame.
- situations and directions of elements of the wheelchair are determined by the perspective of a user seated in the wheelchair. Accordingly, the left side of the wheelchair corresponds to the right side of Figure 1 and vice versa.
- the situations or directions “up” or “top”, “down” or “bottom”, “rear” or “back” and "front” follow the same rule.
- substantially longitudinal indicates a direction of an element, such as a tube, having, as a major direction component, the rear-to-front direction. Such an element may also be to a minor extent be skewed laterally and or towards the bottom or the top.
- a "profile”, for the purpose of the present invention encompasses any three-dimensional structure having a substantially constant cross-section contour along at least part of its three-dimensional extension.
- Tubes, struts with circular, rectangular, x-shaped, open or closed cross-sections are examples of typical profiles. Specific examples are rail profiles, rim profiles and u-profiles.
- light construction materials and, whenever possible, aluminium instead of steal is used as building material for the profiles.
- the wheelchair of the present invention comprises two lateral, left and right side frames 3, 4, respectively connected to each other by a cross brace assembly comprising at least two cross struts 9, 10.
- the lateral side frames comprise upper left and right side frame tubes 7, 8 and lower left and right side frame tubes 5 and 6.
- a pair of upper and lower side frame tubes of one side, for example tubes 5 and 7 of the left side extend in parallel in a rear-to-front direction.
- a pair of upper and lower side frame tubes on each side, that is tubes 5 and 7 on the left side, as well as tubes 6 and 8 on the right side, are connected to each other by further lateral frame tubes.
- the rear tubes 15, 16 and intermediate tubes 17, 18 are extending in a substantially vertical direction.
- said longitudinal upper side frame tube 7, 8, said lower longitudinal side frame tube, said rear side frame tube 15, 16 and a front side frame tube 13, 14 form the sides of a quadrilateral, preferably of a trapezoid.
- the left and right front tubes 13, 14, connecting the upper and lower side frame tubes of their respective side at their front end with each other, are shown not to be exactly vertical. With respect to horizontal, the front tubes 13, 14 form an angle of less than 90° and are skewed, with their upper end, in a backward direction, towards the rear end of the wheelchair. The skilled person will understand that the exact angle of the front tubes 13 and 14 with respect to horizontal is not relevant.
- the lower side frame tubes 5 and 6 thus are a bit longer than the upper side frame tubes 7, 8, which means that the castor wheels can be fixed further to the front with respect to the seat.
- the lateral side frames 3, 4 are vertical and in parallel.
- the drive wheel 2 is vertical.
- the rear frame tubes 15, 16 and the intermediate frame tubes 17, 18 are vertical and in parallel, and the upper and lower side frame tubes 7, 8 and 5, 6, respectively, are in parallel with each other and parallel to the floor.
- side frames have the purpose of providing a chassis and/or the structural support for carrying the seat, for attaching the wheels and for further functions.
- the side frames need to provide a structure 5.1, 6.1 for pivotally connecting the lower end of the cross-struts 9, 10, and a generally longitudinal support for stabilizing the seat tubes 11, 12. While these specific supporting functions may impose certain limitations on the form or shape that side frames can assume, there still is room for many variations and creativity.
- construction with fewer individual tubes and less apparent connection structures were disclosed. Therefore, the present invention is not intended to be limited to any specific arrangement of side frames. Tubular arrangements, as well as arrangements using other and several different support structures of different forms are encompassed by the present invention and may be used and/or adapted for the purpose of the present invention.
- some wheelchairs use only a single main profile, instead of a pair, said single main profile extending from a rear to front direction in a substantially longitudinal way, generally close to parallel to the ground, whereby these single profiles may be more or less bent or assume an L-shaped configuration, as disclosed, for example, in EP 0911009 .
- Wheelchairs having frame structures as in EP 0911009 may be adapted for the purpose of the present invention.
- substantially is used in the present specification in order to express that a specific orientation is closer to the indicated orientation than to the respective opposed orientation. Accordingly, “substantially vertical” indicates that a respective structural entity is in a position that is closer to vertical than to horizontal. “Substantially horizontal” means closer to horizontal than to vertical. “Substantially parallel” means closer to parallel than to perpendicular, and so forth.
- the orientation of the rear tubes 15, 16 does not need necessarily to be exactly vertical, but may include an angle different from 90° with respect to horizontal.
- the rear tubes 15, 16 extend vertically above the upper side frame tubes 7, 8, and are then referred to as back upholstery tubes 22, 23 as they form support for attaching the back upholstery, the latter not being shown in the figures.
- the left and right back upholstery tubes 15, 16 are bent backwards to extend a short distance backwards so as to form left and right handholds.
- any frame tube of one side of the wheelchair is preferably arranged in a substantially parallel manner with respect to the corresponding frame tube of the other side frame.
- a pair of left and right drive wheel fixing elements 19, 20 can be seen.
- the drive wheel fixing elements 19, 20 on each side, respectively, is attached on its rear end to the rear back tube 15, 16 and at its front end at the intermediate tube 17, 18.
- Each drive wheel fixing element 19, 20 extends substantially in parallel to the ground and comprises, over its length, a plurality of apertures arranged next to each other in the rear-to front direction.
- the axle of the drive wheel can be rotatably fixed in any of these apertures, thereby determining the position of the drive wheel in the rear-to-front direction. This is illustrated schematically by the position of the left drive wheel 2 in Figure 1 .
- the possibility of adjusting the position of the large drive wheel provides an important advantage, as it allows taking the weight and anatomy of a wheelchair user into account thereby improving stability of the wheelchair and reducing the risk of tilting over. Furthermore, the drive wheel can be fixed so as to be comfortably manoeuvrable and easy to propel by the wheelchair user.
- the drive wheel fixing elements can be detachably secured to the intermediate tube 17, 18, or it can be permanently secured, for example by welding. If it is welded, it preferably also comprises spaced apart apertures one above the other, for adjusting the height of the drive wheel with respect to the side frames.
- the expression “vertical frame element” and/or “vertical frame structure” is also used for referring to the intermediate tube 17, 18.
- the structure 17, 18 is no longer an "intermediate” tube, but simply a substantially vertical structure, which carries said wheel fixing plate for attaching the wheel.
- the term "drive wheel” refers to the large wheels that can be propelled and manoeuvred by a user sitting in the wheelchair.
- the drive wheels 2, 2' are rear wheels as in the embodiment shown in the figures, whereas the small castor wheels 21, 21' are front wheels.
- the castor wheels are much smaller than the drive wheels and their function is to provide stability by preventing tipping over forwardly.
- the castor wheels comprise a swivel axis, which provides motility and manoeuvrability to the overall wheelchair. It could also be envisaged to provide large front drive wheels and back swivel castor wheels. This latter possibility is more often used with motorized wheelchairs.
- the wheelchair of the present invention is preferably a non-motorised wheelchair, but may, of course also be motorised.
- the cross brace assembly of the embodiment shown in the figures comprises two crosswise arranged struts 9, 10.
- a "strut” may be any profile.
- the cross-struts 9, 10 are pivotally connected to each other at the central pivot point 30, which, in the embodiment shown, is located about halfway of each cross-strut 9, 10. It is not mandatory that the central pivot point 30 is exactly in the middle of each cross strut, the point 30 may be displaced slightly upwardly or downwardly in dependency of preferences. In generally, however, this displacement remains within a few centimetres, for example, up to 10 cm from the exact mid-point of each cross-strut.
- each cross-strut comprises an upper and a lower section 57, 58; 54, 55, respectively.
- the upper section 57, 58 of each cross-strut 9, 10 is the section starting from the central pivot point 30 and extending upwardly to the seat tube
- the lower section 54, 55 is the section starting from the central pivot point 30 and extending downwardly to the pivotal hinge 5.1, 6.1 (visible in Figure 1 ), where each cross-strut is directly pivotally connected to the one of the side frames 3, 4.
- the cross-struts are pivotally attached to each side frame at the lower end of each cross-strut 9, 10.
- the left cross strut 9 is pivotally attached, at its lower end, to the right lower frame tube 6, at the right pivotal hinge 6.1, whereas the right cross-strut 10 is pivotally attached to the left lower frame tube 5 at the left pivotal hinge 5.1.
- the left cross strut 9 is named "left” only for purpose of definition because it carries, at its upper end, the left seat tube 11, whereas the "right” cross strut carries the right seat tube 12.
- the left and right seat tubes are attached approximately in the centre of their rear-to-front longitudinal extension in a substantially perpendicular way to the end of each respective cross strut, thus forming a shape reminding of the letter "T".
- the left and right cross-struts 9, 10 are pivotally connected to each other at pivoting axis 30, which lies about half way of the length of each dross-strut, thus forming a scissor like articulation. This articulation is used during the folding and unfolding process as will be described further below, bringing the side frames 3, 4 together and deploying them, respectively.
- the seat tubes 11 and 12 are provided in a way that allows the attachment of a flexible seat surface on them.
- the present invention encompasses assemblies comprising a total of three or four, or even more such struts.
- the number and/or thickness of the struts are variables that may be determined as a function of the weight and/or size of a wheelchair user.
- only one pivotal hinge 5.1, 6.1 per side frame is used, with one, two or more cross-struts being part of the same pivotal hinge.
- the pivotal hinge 5.1, 6.1 is centred or close to the centre with respect to the rear-to-front extension of the seat tubes 11, 12, thereby enabling essentially central connection of each cross-strut 9, 10 at the respective seat tube, as mentioned above.
- the support elements 31-34 are provided in the form of retainers, which are fixed on the upper side frame tubes 7 and 8.
- the support elements 32-34 are preferably made of a synthesised organic polymer or from a natural polymer, which enables a positioned connection between said seat tube 11, 12 and the longitudinal tube 7, 8, thereby preventing direct contact of metallic parts of said seat tube and said longitudinal frame tube 7, 8.
- the support elements 31-34 are rigidly attached to the longitudinal upper side frame tube 7, 8. They could as well be attached to the seat tubes 11, 12 and releasably engage during folding and unfolding with the side frame tubes 7, 8.
- each seat tube 11, 12 is thus stabilised at its rear end by a rear retainer 33, 34 and at its front end by a respective front retainer 31, 32.
- the seat tube is stably harboured in the deployed position of the wheelchair and lateral movement, that is, any lateral deviation from the desired and/or foreseen orientation of the seat tube is prevented in the use position of the wheelchair.
- transversal rear-to-front movement of the seat tube is also blocked, but by the aid of further structural elements.
- the support elements 31-34 may be formed as shown in Figure 1 , that is, comprising basically two rigid lateral walls for receiving the seat tubes in-between, forming the position of contact or close-to-contact with lateral parts of said seat tubes 7, 8 and thereby preventing lateral displacement of the seat tubes.
- retainers 31-34 for example retainers comprising a clip or a snap mechanism, which detachably fix the seat tube in a more rigid manner.
- a snap mechanism more force may be needed to detach the seat tubes and pass to the folded position.
- a hand-actuated release mechanism which releases (and possibly receives) the seat tubes only upon actuation of the release mechanism.
- the support elements 31-34, the seat tube 11, 12 and the upper side frame tubes 7, 8 do not abut against each other in the unfolded position. A metal-to-metal contact is thus avoided. This is advantageous, since a metal to metal contact could produce unpleasant noises during use of the wheelchair.
- Figure 2 shows the same wheelchair of Figure 1 in a completely folded position.
- left and right telescopic elements, 41, 40 which, in the deployed position shown in Figure 1 , are retracted, respectively, in the left and right intermediate frame tubes 17, 18.
- the telescopic element 40 is telescopically extended outwards from a aperture 8.1 in the upper side frame tube 8 in a substantially vertical upward direction.
- the right telescopic element 40 comprises, as shown in Figure 2 , a lower and an upper tube 44, 46, respectively, the upper tube 46 having a smaller diameter than the lower tube 44 and being telescopically guided in the latter.
- the lower tube 44 has a smaller diameter than the intermediate tube frame 18 and is telescopically guided in the latter.
- the upper tube 46 is pivotally connected to the right seat tube 12, by way of an attachment element 47, the latter being rigidly connected to the seat tube 12.
- the telescopic element 40 is pivotally connected to the seat tube 12 at a position which is behind (that is, in a rearward position with respect to) the connection of the seat tube 12 to the cross strut 10. It is noted that with the telescope elements 41, 40 being guided in the intermediate frame tubes 17, 18, a separate frame tube for the telescope elements can be spared.
- the telescope elements are not visible to the observed in the position of use, and even in the folded position, the drive wheels cover to some extent the view to the extended telescope elements 40, 41.
- the telescope elements including the telescope profile guiding structure, are integrated into frame elements that are present anyhow for the purpose of other functions (e.g. the attachment of the wheel fixing elements), and do not affect or disturb the design of the side frames or other functionalities of the latter.
- the left and right telescopic elements 41, 40 do not require any specific harbouring structure.
- the left and right intermediate tubes 17 and 18 are part of the side frames 3, 4 and are required for the rigid attachment of the drive wheel-fixing elements 19, 20, as discussed above. Accordingly, the embodiment shown in the figures assigns a double function to the intermediate tubes 41, 40, thereby reducing the necessity of further stabilising tubes or of a link element for stabilising the seat tubes 11, 12 as disclosed in US 4,989,890 and US 6,050,582 and further prior art documents discussed above.
- the problem of the lateral side frames assuming an V-shape as discussed above is avoided with the present invention, since a link element is not used. Indeed, it is not necessary any more to use a link element for stabilising the wheelchair in the position of use.
- left and right telescopic elements 41, 40 block or at least limit transversal movement of the left and right seat tubes 11, 12, in a rear-to-front direction. This further blocking or stabilising effect exerted on the seat tubes 11, 12 also exists in the deployed position of use shown in Figure 2 .
- the seat tubes 11, 12 are disengaged from the retainers 31-34.
- the telescopic elements 41, 40 still provide some lateral stabilisation during folding and in the folded position.
- the telescope element comprises one, two or more profiles, for example tubes, wherein at least one inner profile is guided for telescopic movement in an outer profile, wherein said inner and outer profiles are provided with a material having a desirable coefficient of friction (adhesion, dynamic friction) so that less force is needed for enabling telescope movement than in the absence of said material.
- the profiles may be coated with the material, or the material may be fixed on the profiles. Suitable materials are plastics, synthetic, organic polymers in general, for example fluoropolymers. The material is coated and/or fixed on the profiles in a way that the materials are in contact during telescopic movement.
- the profiles are made of aluminium and are coated with a plastic, and/or a plastic is fixed on the profiles, so as to prevent sliding movement of aluminium on aluminium, thereby reducing friction during telescopic movement.
- Figure 3 shows the wheelchair of the invention in a front view. Again, seat and back surfaces are removed for the reason of clarity. In contrast to Figures 1 and 2 above, Figure 3 also shows the right rear, large drive 2'. It can further be seen that each left and right wheel 2, 2' comprises a grip ring 51, 52, used to propel the wheelchair by the user. In Figure 3 , also the right castor wheel 21' is shown. In Figure 3 and Figure 4 discussed below, the same embodiment as in Figures 1 and 2 is shown and corresponding structural elements are thus designated with the same reference number.
- Figure 4 shows a front view of the wheelchair of the invention, similar to Figure 3 , but in a completely folded position. Again, the folded wheelchair discloses details of the left and right telescopic elements as discussed above.
- the view of Figure 4 gives a bit more detail with respect to the pivotal attachment of the upper end of the telescopic elements 40, 41 to the respective left and right seat tubes 11, 12 at the elements 47, 48.
- the left and right pivotal attachment elements 48, 47 are themselves pivotally attached to the left and right seat tube 11, 12, respectively, and thus forms sort of a pivotal projections, at which the upper tubes 45, 46 of the left and right telescopic element 45, 45, respectively, are attached.
