Le terme enceinte désigne ici un dispositif ou un récipient équipé d'un moyen d'accès obturable de manière étanche. Ce récipient ou dispositif définit un volume de préparation, de stockage et/ou de manipulation de produits ne devant pas être en contact avec l'extérieur ou avec un utilisateur. Il s'agit par exemple de produits dits dangereux comme certains produits biologiques, chimiques ou radioactifs.
