Neben dem Einsatz von Rundholz, das zu Spänen, Fasern oder Strands aufgearbeitet wird, gelangen auch sämtliche Sägenebenprodukte wie Sägespäne, Hackschnitzel, Spreißelholz, in der jüngeren Vergangenheit auch an Bedeutung zunehmend Altholz, bei der Herstellung von Holzwerkstoffen zum Einsatz. Als Bindemittel dienen in der Regel solche auf Basis von Formaldehydharzen, im Bereich der OSB-Platten auch von nennenswerter Bedeutung solche auf Basis von Isocyanaten.
