Definitions

  • the present invention relates to an apparatus for beach feeding and in particular to an apparatus for coastal beach feeding.
  • Beach feeding is a technique that consists of adding sand to the coasts in order to contrast the erosion phenomena. These are caused by the activity of the waves that in winter, due to eddies, move sand and pebbles from the coast to the open sea and in summer, owing to their lower strength, cause a transport of material from the open sea to the coast. However, due to natural currents and human settlements, the transport of sediment toward the coast is smaller with respect to the transport in the opposite direction whereby over the years a slow erosion of the coasts occurs.
  • Presently known beach feeding techniques may be divided into two categories: those that provide the transport of quarry or river sand to the beaches and those that provide the withdrawal of sand from the sea bottom and the transfer thereof to the beaches. These latter techniques are cheaper and carried out by means of diggers and/or suction pumps mounted on surface means.
  • said known apparatuses only allow the withdrawal of sand close to coasts that are easily accessible from land.
  • the object of the present invention is to provide an apparatus for beach feeding that is free from the above-mentioned drawbacks. This object is achieved by means of an apparatus whose main features are disclosed in the first claim, while other features are disclosed in the remaining claims.
  • the beach feeding apparatus according to the present invention has the advantage of not damaging the environment in that it allows the operator to closely examine the sea bottom and therefore carry out more specific and less invasive operations.
  • the apparatus according to the present invention also more effective with respect to known apparatuses in that it allows the operator to select, when withdrawing, the type of sand most suitable for beach feeding.
  • the beach feeding apparatus according to the present invention also provides the advantage of access anywhere, even in areas not accessible from land.
  • the beach feeding apparatus includes a submersible tracked car 1 suitable to move the apparatus.
  • Said car 1 is provided, at its front end with respect to the direction of motion, with a mechanical group 2 that is preferably hydraulically driven.
  • Said mechanical group 2 carries and guides an underwater shovel 3 for material withdrawal.
  • the latter is adjustable and provided with a blade, not shown in the figure, to dig in the sea bottom and withdraw sand.
  • the shovel 3 also houses suction means suitable to suck in and transport to the surface the material collected therein.
  • said suction means include an hydraulic pump 4 that can be of any known type such as for example a type HD85H or HD85HM pump marketed by Varisco.
  • the hydraulic pump 4 can take to the surface sand and solid materials having a diameter upto about 6 cm from a maximum depth of about 25 m, but obviously said parameters can be changed by changing the pump.
  • Pump 4 is provided at the top with an inlet 5 to feed hydraulic oil and is connected to a pipe 6 to transfer the withdrawn material to the surface.
  • the submersible car 1 in the preferred embodiment, is a tracked car with variable pitch hydraulic motion. It is provided with a housing for an underwater operator intended to operate car 1 and shovel 3 as well as to operate the suction means.
  • the underwater operator drives car 1, and therefore the whole beach feeding apparatus, to the area most suitable for withdrawal.
  • he can closely examine the bottom from where the sand will be withdrawn and can operate in order to minimize the environmental damage.
  • he adjusts the depth of the blade of shovel 3 so as to withdraw the sandy layer most suitable for beach feeding and finally he operates the hydraulic pump 4.
  • the material is first collected in shovel 3 and then sucked in by pump 4 that takes it to the surface along the path indicated by the arrows in the figures.
  • the beach feeding apparatus has a low overall weight and therefore can be easily placed on a floating means and taken to the open sea to perform the withdrawal operations in areas away from the coasts.
  • the withdrawn material is initially discharged onto the floating means and subsequently on the coast.
  • the sand withdrawal operation from the bottom takes place close to the coast, the sand is discharged directly on the coast.
  • pump 4 could be an electric pump and car 1 could be driven by an electric motor.
  • the materials for manufacturing the various parts of the apparatus can be of any kind as long as they are suitable to the purpose.
