Abstract
Description
- The present invention relates to a fitting assembly for pivotal connection of a sash component with respect to a main frame component of an openable window structure, comprising elongate first and second fitting members for connection with opposed side members of the main frame and sash components, respectively, said second fitting member being pivotally connected at a first end with a slide member fitted in said first member for sliding motion through part of the length of the first fitting member from a first end thereof, and a stay member having a first end pivotally connected with the first fitting member adjacent a second end thereof and a second end pivotally connected with the second fitting member at a distance from the first end thereof to allow pivotal movement of the sash component between a closed position of the sash component, in which the first and second fitting members and the stay member extend in overlying substantially parallel relationship and any position within a range of opening positions defined by the pivotal connections of the fitting and stay members, at least one of said pivotal connections being formed by releasable engagement between interacting engagement means for releasable mounting of the sash component with respect to the main frame component.
- Fitting assemblies of this kind are commonly used for assembling the sash and main frame components of top-hung openable window structures.
- With conventional openable window constructions of this kind the sash and frame components are typically assembled by means of fittings having interconnected parts, which are secured to the sash and frame components by conventional screw connections, and are not separable from one another. In the production of such windows this conventional assembling method adds to time consumption and complicates the final assembling of the sash and main frame components, which in view of risk of imposing damage to the components is a relatively critical stage in the production.
- Moreover, whereas openable window structures, to which the invention pertains, are normally supplied to building contractors with the frame and sash components in an assembled state, it is normally desired and customary practice at building sites to have the sash component carrying the glazing element of a window separated from the frame structure during installation of a window in a building in order to avoid the risk of damage to the glazing element by the manipulation of the main frame component needed for its installation in the building.
- With the above mentioned conventional assembling method separation of the sash component from the main frame component will in such cases require disassembling the fitting from either the sash component or the main frame component by removal of a number of the screw connections, by means of which the fitting has been assembled with the sash or main frame component. Besides adding in time consumption to the installation process this requirement is inevitably accompanied by a significant risk of loosing screws or other small parts incorporated in the screw connections.
- In
US-A-5,433,040 a window structure having fitting assembles of the kind defined above is disclosed, in which the pivotal connection of the stay arm with the sash component is formed by interacting snap-type engagement means to allow easy connection and disconnection of the pivot. As only one of the pivotal connections between the frame and sash components can be disconnected the manipulation of the sash component, which can be rather heavy, for separating it from and reassembling it with the frame component will require disconnection and connection of the slide member from connection with the frame component and involve handling of the sash component while occupying a rather uncomfortable tipped or tilted angular position with respect to the frame component. - It is the object of the invention to provide a window fitting assembly, which will allow very quick and easy assembling, separation and reassembling of the sash and main frame components of a window, while avoiding any risk of loosing small connection parts with resulting significant benefits both for the production stage and the handling of window structures in connection with their installation in a building.
- According to the invention this object is achieved by a fitting assembly for releasable locking a sash component with respect to a main frame component of an openable window structure, which is characterized in that that the pivotal connection of the second fitting member with said slide member is formed by releasable engagement of first and second engagement means provided at the slide member and at said first end of the second fitting member, respectively, and the pivotal connection of the first end of the stay member (with the first fitting member is formed by releasable engagement of third and fourth engagement means provided at a second end of the first fitting member and at said first end of the stay member, respectively, releasable blocking means being provided at least at said third and fourth engagement means for retaining their mutual engagement against unintended release.
- Whereas the first and second fitting members of the fitting assembly according to the invention may be permanently secured to the main frame and the sash component, respectively, of a window by any conventional connections means such as screw connections, the first and second fitting members may be separated from one another by release of the releasable blocking means for disengagement of the third and fourth engagement means by quick and easy manipulation without any need for handling of the sash component while occupying a tipped or tilted angular position with respect to the frame component.
- In preferred embodiments of the fitting assembly the first engagement means may comprise a bore or recess provided by the slide member, whereas the second engagement means may comprise a pin member adapted for releasable engagement with the bore or recess.
- In a first preferred embodiment, in which the bore or recess comprises an open dove-tailed recess, the pin member may be fixed with respect to the second fitting member and may comprise a stem part of a non-circular cross-sectional profile capable of engagement with the dove-tailed recess by passage trough a narrowed opening thereof with the sash component occupying an angular position with respect to the main frame component only within a limited range of angular positions around a position, in which the sash component is at a substantially right angle to the main frame component, while retaining its engagement with the recess in angular positions of the sash component outside said range.
- In a second preferred embodiment the pin member of the second engagement means may be arranged in a housing at the first end of the second fitting member to be displaceable in an axial direction of the bore or recess of the first engagement means between a retired position outside the bore or recess and an operative position in engagement with the bore or recess, releasable blocking means being provided at the housing for retaining the pin member in any of the retired and operative positions.
- In a preferred embodiment, the third engagement means may provided by at least one hole in a block member fitted in the first fitting member at the second end thereof, the fourth engagement means comprising a profiled pin member provided at the first end of the stay arm for snap-engagement with said at least one hole.
- In a simple design of this embodiment the profiled pin member of the fourth engagement means may be formed with a circumferential groove and the releasable blocking means may comprise a spring wire member arranged underneath the block member to cross the at least one hole for spring-biased engagement with the circumferential groove on the profiled pin member, as well as an additional hole formed in the block member for introduction of a tool to disengage the spring wire member from the circumferential groove.
- In assembling operations for conventional fitting assemblies, the first and second fitting members of which are connected with opposed side member of the sash and main components at one vertical side thereof, it is an inherent problem that difficulties are occasionally encountered in obtaining a desired accurate positioning of the sash component within the opening provided by the main frame component due to tolerances in the production of the window components and/or distortions imparted to the main frame component during its installation in a window opening in a building wall, whereby positioning of the sash component may become distorted and the side, top and bottom members thereof may become out of alignment with the opposed side, bottom and top members of the main frame component and, at worst, it may become impossible to fit the sash component correctly within the main frame component. To eliminate this problem a particular preferred embodiment is further characterized in that adjusting means is provided at the second end of the first fitting member for adjustment of the position of the pivotal connection of the third and fourth engagement means.
- In a relatively simple design such adjusting means may comprise an excentric adjusting member fitted in an adjustment recess formed in the block member of the third engagement means.
- In the following, preferred embodiments of the fitting assembly according to the invention will be explained in greater detail with reference to the schematic drawings, in which

As best seen in fig. 3 theblock member 16 is formed with twoholes hole 17 forms the third engagement means of the invention and is adapted for engagement by a fourth engagement member formed by aprofiled pin member 19. - The profiled
pin member 19 forming the fourth engagement member is positioned at one end of astay arm 20, the other end of which is pivotally connected with the rail member of thesecond fitting member 12 at a distance from the end thereof, at which the profiledpin member 15 is positioned. As more clearly illustrated in fig. 11 the profiledpin member 19 is generally of circular cross-sectional form, but is provided underneath itshead part 19a with acircumferential groove 19b. - As further illustrated in fig. 3, a releasable blocking means for the engagement of the profiled
pin member 19 in thehole 17 in theblock member 16 forming the third engagement means comprises aspring wire member 21 bent in hair-needle shape and arranged underneath theblock member 16 and crossing both of theholes pin member 19 into engagement with thehole 17 thecircumferential groove 19b will be engaged by thespring wire member 21 to lock the profiledpin member 19 against disengagement from theblock member 16. - This locking engagement of the
spring wire member 21 with thecircumferential groove 19b of the profiledpin member 19 may be released, by pressing on the part of thespring wire member 21 crossing underneath thehole 18 in theblock member 16 by means of any suitable tool, such as a screw driver or the like, introduced into thehole 18. - In operation of the sash and main frame components of a top-hung window by means of the fitting assembly according to the invention the
sash component 10 may be connected with themain frame component 4 as shown in figs. 6 to 8 by the engagement of profiledpin member 15 forming the second engagement means in thedovetailed recess 8 forming the first engagement means. In view of the described profiled design of thepin member 15 this engagement will only be possible within a certain range of angular positions of thesash component 10 with respect to themain frame component 4 surrounding the angular position, at which thesash component 10 is substantially at right angles with respect to themain frame component 4. For other angular positions outside this range thesash component 10 will be retained against disengagement from themain frame component 4. - With the
sash component 10 retained in engagement with themain frame component 4 in the manner described thesash component 10 may now be turned into a lower angular position as shown in fig. 9, in which theprofiled pin member 19 provided by thestay arm 20 may be allowed to engage thehole 17 in theblock member 16 of the third engagement means to become retained in a releasably locked engagement therewith. Thesash component 10 may subsequently be turned into a closed position with respect to the main frame component and locked in this position by further conventional locking means not forming part of the invention. - When it is desired to have the
sash component 10 separated from the main frame component, e.g. for manipulation of the main frame component in connection with its installation in a window opening in a wall of a building without any risk of damaging the sash component including the glazing element or elements carried by it, the sash component will first be opened with respect to the main frame component to a position offering exposure of thehole 18 in theblock member 16 of the third engagement means to allow introduction of a tool for operation of thespring wire member 21 for disengagement of the profiledpin member 19 from its engagement in thehole 17. - Once profiled
pin member 19 has been disengaged from thehole 17 thesash component 10 may be turned again into an angular position with respect to themain frame component 4 within the range, in which disengagement of the profiledpin member 15 from thedovetailed recess 8 is possible. - As will appear from the foregoing description the sash and main frame components of the embodiment illustrated in figs. 1 to 11 may easily be reassembled into locking relationship by performing the operations described in a reverse sequential order.
- In the perspective view in fig. 12 a further representative embodiment of the fitting assembly according to the invention is shown with a
first fitting member 101, asecond fitting member 112 and astay arm 120 pivotally interconnected in the same general configuration as described above for the embodiment illustrated in figs, 1 to 11. In the figure the first and thesecond fitting members stay arm 120 are shown in the overlying substantially parallel relationship occupied by them in the closed position of the sash component, not illustrated in this figure. - As shown in more detail in fig. 13 the first engagement means of this embodiment may be provided at the end of the
slide member 106 fitted in thefirst fitting member 101 as arecess 108 of the same generally dovetail shape as shown for the embodiment in figs. 1 to 11 or alternatively as a closed circular bore. The second engagement means comprises a generallycylindrical pin member 115 arranged in ahousing 122 provided at the upper first end of thesecond fitting member 112 and being displaceable in the axial direction of the recess or bore 108 between a released position, in which thepin member 115 is completely outside the recess or bore 108 and the illustrated operative position, in which thepin member 115 is in engagement with recess orbore 108. - In the
housing 122 releasable blocking means is provided for retaining thepin member 115 against axial displacement in any of the released and operative positions, e.g. in the form of aspring member 123 engaging one or the other of twocircumferential grooves pin member 115 at axial positions corresponding to the released and operative positions, respectively. Anend part 123a of thespring member 123 projects outside thehousing 122 to be operated by a suitable tool like a screwdriver for disengagement from theactual groove pin member 115 and thereby release of the pin member for axial displacement into or out of engagement with the recess or bore 108. - As illustrated the
groove 124 engaged by thespring member 123 in the released position may be formed with an obliquerear wall 124a, whereby disengagement of thespring member 123 from thegroove 124 may be effected by simple manual pressing without use of any tool on the rear end 115a of thepin member 115 projecting outside thehousing 122 in the axial direction. Thereby, thepin member 115 may be brought from the released position to the operative position without any need for using a tool. - Accordingly, in the embodiment shown in figs. 12 and 13 disengagement of the first and
second engagement members spring member 123. Compared to the embodiment represented in figs. 1 to 11 manipulation of the sash component of a window structure during its separation form and reassembling with the main frame component is considerably facilitated. - As shown in more detail in fig. 14 the third and fourth engagement means of this embodiment are of the same general form and configuration as described above for the embodiment shown in figs. 1 to 11.
- Thus, the third engagement means provided by the first
fitting member 101 at a distance from the first engagement means 108 is formed as ahole 117 in anelongate block member 116 adapted for engagement by a fourth engagement means formed by a profiledpin member 119 positioned at one end of thestay arm 120. The profiledpin member 119 is generally of circular cross-sectional form, but is provided underneath itshead part 119a with a circumferential groove 119b. - Equally, the releasable blocking means for the engagement of the profiled
pin member 119 in thehole 117 in theblock member 116 comprises aspring wire member 121 bent in hair-needle shape and arranged underneath theblock member 16 and crossing thehole 117 as well as afurther hole 18 in theblock member 116. Thus, when pressing the profiledpin member 119 into engagement with thehole 117 the circumferential groove 119b will be engaged by thespring wire member 121 to lock the profiledpin member 119 against disengagement from theblock member 116. - This locking engagement of the
spring wire member 121 with the profiledpin member 119 may be released, by pressing on the part of thespring wire member 121 crossing underneath thehole 118 in theblock member 116 by means of any suitable tool, such as a screw driver or the like, introduced into thehole 118. - In operation of the sash and main frame components of a top-hung window by means of the fitting assembly shown in figs 12 to 14 the sash component may be connected with the main frame component by the engagement of
pin member 115 in the recess or bore 108. - With the sash component connected with the main frame component at the first and second engagement means the sash component may be turned to allow engagement of the profiled
pin member 119 of the fourth engagement means within thehole 117 in theblock member 116 of the third engagement means. The sash component may subsequently be turned into a closed position with respect to the main frame component and locked in this position by further conventional locking means. - As further illustrated in fig. 14 an adjusting mechanism is provided for adjustment of the position of pivotal connection between the
first fitting 101 and thestay arm 120 and thereby offering a favourable adjustment facility to compensate for a distortion or misalignment of the sash component with respect to the main frame component. - In the illustrated embodiment the adjusting mechanism is provided by adjustable fitting of the
elongate block member 116 of the third engagement means with respect to the firstfitting member 101 by means ofelongate holes block member 116 is fastened to the firstfitting member 101, and providing theblock member 116 with en excentric adjustingmember 128 arranged in arecess 129 in theblock member 116. - By observation of a distortion or misalignment of the sash component with respect to the main frame component the relative position of the
block member 116 with respect to the firstfitting member 101 and thereby the relative position of the pivotal connection provided by the third and fourth engagement means with respect to the pivotal connection provided by the first and second engagement means may thus be adjusted by simply loosening the screw connections through theelongate holes member 128 to effect displacement of the position of theblock member 116 in the longitudinal direction of the first fitting member 1o1 within the range of displacement offered by theelongate holes underlying holes fitting member 101. thereby the compensation will normally be achieved, which is needed for eliminating the distortion or misalignment. Typically an adjustment range of a few millimetres for the excentric adjustingmember 128 will be sufficient to accommodate normally occurring cases of distortion or misalignment. - As shown in fig. 14 the
elongate hole 127 at the end of theblock member 116 facing the first end of the firstfitting member 101 may be provided in an offsetend section 116a of the block member to provide space for pivotal movement of thestay arm 120 during operation of the fitting assembly. - Whereas the fitting members and engagement means of the fitting assembly according the invention have been described in the foregoing with reference to exemplary embodiments pertaining to a top-hung window only, it will be immediately apparent to skilled persons that deviations from the specifically described structure and design of various details may be accomplished without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
- Further, it would be apparent to a skilled person that the fitting assembly may without substantial modification be applied to releasable locking the sash or wing component with respect to the main frame component of a side-hung window structure, in which the sash component is connected with the main frame component for pivotal motion about a vertical axis. Evidently, in such a structure the first and second fitting members of the invention may be interposed between the top members and the bottom members of the sash and main frame components.
