Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a drain device for sanitary appliances, such as bathtubs and the like.
  • drain columns comprise a drain assembly and an overflow assembly, mounted, respectively, at a waste opening and at an overflow opening of a bathtub, basin, or other receptacle for collecting water, as well as a suitable pipe that connects the two assemblies together.
  • drain columns comprise a drain assembly and an overflow assembly, mounted, respectively, at a waste opening and at an overflow opening of a bathtub, basin, or other receptacle for collecting water, as well as a suitable pipe that connects the two assemblies together.
  • Each assembly of the drain column comprises a collecting body, or drain body, and a drain mounting body, which are to be installed in a position corresponding to the respective opening of the bath, basin, or similar receptacle.
  • the drain bodies are installed on the external part of the receptacle, whilst the drain mounting bodies are installed on the internal part of the receptacle, in such a way that gripped between the two components, with interposition of sealing means, is a portion of wall of the receptacle that identifies the edge of the waste opening or overflow opening.
  • each drain mounting body usually has a respective flange portion and is mounted substantially coaxial to an inlet of the drain body of the respective assembly, which is also provided with a flange part, equipped with a gasket, which surrounds the corresponding opening of the receptacle.
  • the drain assembly typically also comprises a plug, whilst the overflow assembly comprises a covering element or guard, designed to hide from view the overflow opening and/or the flange part of the corresponding drain mounting body.
  • the plug is controlled in opening and closing by means of a remotely controlled actuation system, which comprises a handle or knob associated to the overflow assembly. Said handle or knob is connected, via transmission means, to a suitable mechanism associated to the drain assembly, which is prearranged for causing raising and lowering of the plug within the drain mounting body.
  • the transmission means are usually constituted by a flexible cable, and the handle or knob also constitutes the covering element of the overflow assembly.
  • associated to the plug is, instead, a bistable mechanism for opening and closing, which can be switched by applying pressure on the plug itself. A mechanism of this type is described, for example, in the document No. EP-A-1 338 707 .
  • the drain mounting body is fixed to the drain body, and in turn fixed to the drain mounting body is the above mechanism, to which the plug has previously been associated.
  • the bistable mechanism must have small axial dimensions, also the axial development of the drain mounting body must be small, and for this reason the drain mounting body must be fixed via a metal screw to the drain body.
  • the drain mounting body has, underneath the flange, a tubular wall of small axial development and a central part, connected via radial parts to the tubular wall.
  • the aforesaid central part has an axial hole with two stretches of different diameter, where the lower stretch, of smaller diameter, is designed to receive an end region of a metal screw (not represented in the aforesaid Figure 5 of EP-A-1 338 707 ), whilst the upper stretch, of larger diameter, is designed to receive a threaded projection for anchoring the bistable mechanism.
  • the second end of the aforesaid metal screw is secured in an internal thread present in the drain body of the drain assembly.
  • the drain body of the drain assembly When the latter is made of plastic material, it must include a metal insert in which the aforesaid internal thread is formed, in order to ensure efficient fixing. This complicates production of the drain body.
  • the drain mounting body In order to guarantee a secure fixing, moreover, also the drain mounting body must necessarily be made of metal, and hence will present significant costs.
  • the ensemble formed by the drain mounting body, the bistable mechanism, and the plug is finally anchored by a relatively long screw of small diameter, which can give rise, in the long run, to loosening, above all if the frequent stresses due to manual actuation exerted directly on the plug are considered.
  • the main purpose of the present invention is to overcome one or more of the aforesaid drawbacks of drain assemblies of a known type.
  • a further purpose of the present invention is to overcome one or more of the aforesaid drawbacks of overflow assemblies of a known type.
  • reference 1 designated as a whole a drain device or drain column for a sanitary appliance, according to the present invention, which comprises a drain assembly 10 and an overflow assembly 20.
  • the assembly 10 is installed in a position corresponding to a waste opening of a bathtub, represented only partially and schematically with a dashed line, and designated by A.
  • the assembly 20 is installed in a position corresponding to an overflow opening of the bath A.
  • the device 1 moreover comprises a dedicated pipe 30, which hydraulically connects the two assemblies 10 and 20.
  • the drain assembly 10 comprises a drain body 11, or collecting body, designed to be mounted on the outside of the bath A and having a generally cylindrical tubular shape.
  • the lower end of the body 11 is configured for providing a threaded connection 11a, designed for connection with a pipe for evacuation of the water, designated by B in Figure 1, whilst at the opposite end of the drain body 11 a main inlet is defined, surrounded by a flange part 11b, having a seat for an annular gasket 12, designed to rest on the external surface of the bath A.
  • connection 11c Departing from the circumferential wall of the body 11, in a radial direction, is a connection 11c to which a first end of the pipe 30 is to be connected.
  • the attachment connection 11c has hollow cylindrical shape and is externally threaded, so as to co-operate with a suitable ring nut 30a for tightening the pipe 30.
  • sealing means and antifriction means Conveniently mounted between the ring nut 30a and the connection 11c are sealing means and antifriction means, designated as a whole by 30b in Figure 2.
  • the assembly 10 further comprises a mounting body 13, having an upper flange portion 13a, which is designed to rest on the internal surface of the bath A, with possible interposition of sealing means, designated by 14 in Figure 2.
  • the lower part of the drain mounting body is configured as an axially extended tubular part provided with an external thread, wherein the cylindrical wall that forms the part 13b is continuous or solid, i.e., without any lateral openings through which the water can flow away.
  • an internal thread 11d formed on the internal surface of the circumferential wall of the collecting body 11 is an internal thread 11d, in which at least part of the aforesaid bottom threaded portion 13b of the drain mounting body 13 can be screwed.
  • the drain mounting body 13 can be fixed or connected directly to the collecting body 11, i.e., without the need for a dedicated screw or other additional means, by screwing the former into the latter and thus gripping, between the two components, with interposition of the sealing means 12 and/or 14, the portion of wall of the bath A that identifies the edge of the waste opening.
  • the drain mounting body 13 which is axially hollow, is made in such a way as to present, in an intermediate area of the tubular part 13b relatively close to the flange part 13a, a narrowed portion or a step that identifies a contrast surface (not visible in the figures), upon which a supporting member, designated as a whole by 15, is to abut or rest.
  • Said member 15, preferably made of a single piece of thermoplastic material, has a peripheral annular part and a central part, or core, joined to one another by means of a plurality of radial elements or partitions.
  • the core referred to above has an axial passage provided with an internal thread, in which a bottom threaded projection 16a of a fixed component of a bistable mechanism, designated as a whole by 16, can be screwed.
  • An upper movable component of the mechanism 16 is instead fixed, for example by snap-action, in a hollow bottom stem 17a of a mushroom-headed plug 17, said stem defining on the outside a positioning seat for a seal 18.
  • the bistable mechanism 16 is of the type designed to be switched between a position of opening and a position of closing by acting on the plug 17, for example pressing it.
  • the mechanism can be of any known type, for example as described in the above-mentioned document EP-A-1 338 707 .
  • the seal 18 In the position of closing of the plug 17, the seal 18 operates in a fluid-tight way on the flange part 13a of the drain mounting body 13. Instead, in the position of opening, the seal 18 is raised with respect to the flange portion 13a, so as to enable evacuation of the water from the bath, through the axial duct of the drain mounting body 13 and the passages delimited between the radial partitions of the supporting member 15.
  • the external part of the supporting member 15 has a diameter such as to enable its introduction, with slight interference, in the axial passage of the part 13b of the drain mounting body 13, as far as the aforesaid contrast surface.
  • the annular part of the member 15 can present axial external projections, one of which is designated by 15a in Figure 3.
  • the supporting member 15 is consequently removably mounted in the drain mounting body 13. In this way, if so required, the ensemble formed by the plug 17, the mechanism 16, and the member 15 can be extracted from the drain mounting body 13 by simply pulling the plug upwards.
  • the overflow assembly 20 comprises a collecting body 21, designed to be mounted on the outside of the bath A.
  • the collecting body 21 is substantially cup-shaped and has an inlet surrounded by a flange part 21b, defining a seat for an annular gasket 22, designed to rest on the external surface of the bath A.
  • Departing in a radial direction from the peripheral wall of the body 21 is a connection 21c to which the second end of the pipe 30 is to be connected.
  • the connection 21c has a shape similar to that of the homologous connection 11c of the drain body 11 so as to co-operate with a respective ring nut 30a of the pipe 30.
  • sealing means and antifriction means 30b are sealing means and antifriction means 30b.
  • Rising from the end wall of the cup-shaped body 21 is a projection 21d, embedded within which is a metal insert 21e, which extends axially and has a blind hole provided with an internal thread.
  • the assembly 20 further comprises a mounting body 23, formed so as to have a peripheral annular part 23a and a central part or core 23b, joined to one another by means of two or more radial partitions 23c.
  • the annular part 23a in turn comprises a flange portion 23a', which is designed to rest on the internal surface of the bath A, with possible interposition of sealing means, and a substantially cylindrical portion 23a", designed to be introduced at least partially into the axial passage of the gasket 22.
  • the core 23b of the mounting body 23 is provided with an axial passage, designated as a whole by 23b' in Figure 4, which - as can be clearly seen in Figure 5 - has two stretches of different diameter.
  • the stretch having smaller diameter is able to receive part of the stem of a screw, designated by 24, used for fixing the mounting body 23 to the corresponding collecting body 21, i.e., for screwing the metal insert 21e into the internal thread.
  • the stretch of the passage 23b' having larger diameter has, instead, an internal thread, in which there can be directly screwed a threaded stem 25a, made of a single piece in a covering element or guard, which is made, for example, of thermoplastic material and is designated by 25.
  • the covering element 25 is designed to hide at least in part the body 23 and the overflow opening, without, however, obstructing them.
  • a flared intermediate stretch is provided, designed to house the head of the screw 24 at least partially.
  • the solution proposed enables direct fixing to one another of the drain mounting body 13 and the collecting body 11, by screwing the externally threaded tubular lower part 13a of the drain mounting body in the internal thread 11d formed at the inlet of the collecting body.
  • a screw which, in prior-art solutions with a plug equipped with a bistable mechanism, must be used for connecting the drain mounting body to the collecting body, with the drawbacks that derive therefrom, mentioned in the introductory part of the present description.
  • the large extension of the surfaces that are coupled together by threaded connection ensures a fixing between the parts that is secure and reliable over time.
  • the absence of a fixing screw enables the entire drain mounting body and collecting body to be made of plastic material, for example via moulding of thermoplastic material, with simple and inexpensive operations. It is to be noted in any case that said components can also be made of other material, for example metal or a metal alloy, such as brass.
  • the threaded part 13b of the drain mounting body 13 will be of a length such as to not obstruct, once screwed, the inlet of the radial connection 11c.
  • a number of versions of drain mounting body 13 will be envisaged, differentiated from one another precisely as regards the length of the tubular part 13b, so as to enable installation of the drain column 1 on bathtubs different from one another as regards the thickness of the wall in which the drain outlet is formed.
  • a number of versions of drain mounting bodies 13 can, for example, be provided, with a length indicatively comprised between a minimum of approximately 34 mm and a maximum of approximately 100 mm. It should be noted, however, that, when the drain mounting body 13 is made entirely of plastic material, it can be easily and rapidly adapted by the installer, by cutting the part in excess, if so required.
  • the drain assembly 10 of the device 1 according to the invention in addition to being of simple construction and contained cost, is prearranged for being installed with extremely simple, convenient and fast operations and is readily adaptable to different wall thicknesses.
  • the mounting body 23 is provided with an axial passage 23b' with two sections facilitates both the production and the installation of the device according to the invention.
  • the mounting body 23 can in fact be fixed to the corresponding collecting body 21 via a screw dedicated only to this function, and hence not having also the function of support for a covering element, as typically occurs in known solutions.
  • the part with larger diameter of the aforesaid axial passage enables direct fixing of the covering element to the mounting body 23, without any need for intermediate threaded fittings or unions, which are typical instead of the prior art.
  • the mounting body 23 and the corresponding collecting body 21 are preferably made of plastic material, for example via moulding of thermoplastic material, even though they can also be made of metal or a metal alloy, such as brass.
  • the bodies 23 and 21 of the overflow assembly 20 are configured in a way similar to the homologous bodies 13 and 11 of the drain assembly 10, as regards their direct coupling.
  • the cylindrical part 23a" of the body 23 is axially more extended with respect to the case represented in the figures and is provided with an external thread.
  • the internal surface of the peripheral wall of the body 21, which defines the corresponding inlet thereof is provided with an internal thread, in which there can be screwed at least part of the aforesaid external thread of the body 23.
  • Said embodiment enables use of the screw 24 and of the insert 21e, with the corresponding projection 21d, to be avoided, thus simplifying both the construction of the two components 21, 23 and their assembly.
  • the bodies 21 and 23 may advantageously be made of plastic material, in which case the length of the part 23a" of the mounting body 23 can be easily and rapidly adapted by the installer according to the thickness of the bathtub, by cutting the part in excess, if so required. Also in this case a number of versions of the body 23 may in any case be envisaged, differentiated from one another as regards the length of the threaded cylindrical part 23a".
  • the invention has been described with reference to a bathtub, but the device described can be used also in combination with wash-basins or sinks having a body made of ceramic material or other material that, albeit provided with an overflow opening, is not structured for conveying autonomously the water from the opening itself to the drain assembly, such wash-basins or sinks hence requiring a purposely provided additional dedicated pipe, of the type designated above by 30.
