- the chew product can be prepared in accordance with the methods generally described above. In particular, all dry components are weighed, mixed, and ground to the desired particulate size. The mixed and ground dry components are then mixed with the liquid components in a pre-conditioner of a single screw extruder. Steam is then added to the pre-conditioner in accordance with ordinary conditions. The resulting mixture is then extruded through an appropriately set extruder screw. The extrudate is cut to a desired length using rotating knives or intermittent knives. The product is then cooled to room temperature and packaged in an air-impermeable container.
