  • Embossing is an operation whereby a raised or recessed pattern of signs or decorations is executed on paper, cardboard, leather, fabric, nonwoven fabric, plastic materials or other sheeted materials.
  • embossing operation modifies the surface of the material with designs or motifs that are decorative or serve the purpose of increasing the specific volume of the material. Embossing can also be used to provide consistency to fibre webs, e.g. veils of nonwoven material, or to join together two or more webs of paper or other material.
  • Known embossing devices can be classified according to the following three categories:
  • the steel -to- paper embossing system is the most widely used, in particular for embossing paper webs.
  • one of the two cylinders is made of steel and it has its surface engraved with the pattern to be reproduced on the material to be embossed.
  • the other cylinder is formed by paper or cardboard disks, pressed and compacted in such a way as to form a cylindrical body that initially has a smooth surface.
  • the outer surface of the paper cylinder is engraved by the steel cylinder in such a way as to form permanent recesses whose shape corresponds to the projections of the steel cylinder.
  • both cylinders are made of steel and have complementary reliefs and recesses.
  • the cylinder with the reliefs is obtained by mechanical machining and it is hardened.
  • This cylinder is used to engrave the female cylinder. After engraving, the female cylinder is hardened as well.
  • Microembossing systems use two steel embossing cylinders with identical reliefs mutually in phase, both obtained with mechanical machining processes.
  • the object of the present invention is to provide an embossing device that allows to change the embossing pattern at very low costs and in short times.

  • the plates 24, 26 are held on the respective magnetic cylinders 20, 22 exclusively by the magnetic force produced by the permanent magnetisation of the cylinders 20, 22.
  • the plate 24 is provided with projections 28 and the plate 26 is provided with recesses 30 arranged in phase with respect to the projections 28.
  • an embossing by drawing is obtained that is similar to the one obtained with known embossing device operating according to the steel -to- paper or steel -to- steel technique.
  • it is sufficient to replace the photoengraved plates 24, 26.
  • the cost for replacing the photoengraved plates is enormously lower than the cost for replacing the embossing cylinders.
  • the projections 28 and the recesses 30 have a rounded shape in order to avoid piercing or cutting the sheet 18.
  • each embossing cylinder 20, 22 comprises a magnetic cylinder whereon is wound a photoengraved plate 24, 26.
  • both photoengraved plates 24, 26 are provided with projections that are mutually in phase so that the sheeted material 18 is compressed between mutually opposite projections 32, 34 of the plates 24, 26.
  • the first embossing cylinder 10 comprises a magnetic cylinder 20 whereon is applied a photoengraved plate 24 provided with projections 36.
  • the second embossing cylinder 12 has a smooth outer surface.
  • the second embossing cylinder 12 can be a simple steel cylinder with smooth outer surface or it can be formed from a magnetic cylinder 22 whereon is applied a plate 26 with both its surfaces smooth.
  • the present invention can also be applied with a first embossing cylinder comprising a magnetic cylinder and a photoengraved plate applied on the magnetic cylinder and a second non magnetic embossing cylinder, e.g. made of yielding material (paper or the like).
