The reason is that in order to have a brilliance which is as high as possible, the known cutting techniques are developed to render the stone transparent to light. As a consequence of this transparency any defaults present in the interior of the stone are revealed and become visible through the stone. This is unwanted.

  • the inventor has observed that light impinging the surface of such a gemstone is immediately reflected, light absorption being largely reduced as compared to stones comprising facets having a larger surface area. With increasing surface area the risk to absorption, and the appearance of large white-like surfaces has been found to occur, which reduce the brilliance of the stone.
  • the inventor has further found that that when the surface area of a facet increases to above 0.25 mm 2 , too much light is reflected in one single direction, as a consequence of which that facet resembles a large white surface, which goes at the expense of the brilliance of the stone. Also, when the faceting of this invention is applied to ornamental diamonds for example, with increasing size of the facets there is an increasing risk to penetration of the light into the interior of the stone, which goes at the expense of the amount of light reflected by the surface of the stone. A surface area of 0.04 mm 2 per facet appeared to be the smallest possible surface area achievable with existing cutting techniques.

Claims (9)

  1. Schmuckstein, der eine Oberfläche aufweist, wovon mindestens ein Teil geschliffen ist, wobei mindestens ein sichtbarer Teil des Steins geschliffen ist, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die geschliffene Oberfläche eine Vielzahl von benachbarten Facetten aufweist, wobei jede einen Oberflächenbereich zwischen 0,04 und 0,25 mm2 aufweist, wobei der Winkel zwischen den benachbarten Facetten zwischen 0,1 und 5° beträgt, und die Facetten derart entlang der Oberfläche des Steins angebracht werden, dass sie den ursprünglichen Konturen des Steins folgen.
  2. Schmuckstein nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass der geschliffene Oberflächenbereich 4 bis 25 Facetten je mm2 Oberflächenbereich umfasst.
  3. Schmuckstein nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass der geschliffene Oberflächenbereich 4 bis 15, bevorzugt 10 bis 12 Facetten je mm2 Oberflächenbereich umfasst.
  4. Schmuckstein nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass der Winkel zwischen den benachbarten Facetten zwischen 0,25 und 1° beträgt.
  5. Schmuckstein nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Facetten eine regelmäßige geometrische Form aufweisen.
  6. Schmuckstein nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Facetten eine geometrische Form aufweisen, die unregelmäßig ist.
  7. Schmuckstein nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 6, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Facetten praktisch die gleichen Formen aufweisen.
  8. Schmuckstein nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 6, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass die Facetten eine unterschiedliche Form aufweisen.
  9. Schmuckstein nach einem der Ansprüche 1 bis 8, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass der Schmuckstein ausgewählt ist aus der Gruppe von Edel- oder Halbedelsteinen.
