Definitions

  • This invention relates to an article carrier of the basket type formed from paperboard or similar foldable sheet material which carrier is adapted to accommodate a plurality of articles, for example bottles, and to a blank for forming the carrier.
  • a basket carrier for bottles includes a central (medial) partition structure which incorporates a handle structure by which the carrier can be lifted and carried and the bottles are arranged in rows on either side of the central partition structure. More often than not the bottles are separated from one another by either separately formed or otherwise relatively complex transverse partition panels extending from each side of the medial partition structure to the adjacent side wall of the carrier. Hence in this type of arrangement the bottles are typically accommodated in individual cells of the carrier.
  • an article carrier of the basket type adapted to accommodate a plurality of articles, for example bottles, comprising a base, opposed side and end walls, a handle and a handle reinforcing panel hingedly connected to the handle, wherein a partition panel extends downwardly from the handle reinforcing panel between two rows of articles and is hingedly connected to said handle reinforcing panel to facilitate folding of the reinforcing panel on a packaging machine.
  • the hinged connection of the downwardly extending partition panel is an obliquely extending fold line.
  • the article carrier is conveniently constructed and arranged to carry a group of articles in two rows wherein the handle is disposed between the rows.
  • the handle-reinforcing panel is preferably connected to at least one end edge of the handle.
  • the partition panel may extend within a region between spaced apertures in top panels of the carrier.
  • the handle may be an upright carrying handle which can be lowered below the height of articles when contained in the carrier and raised above said height to expose a carrying handle aperture for use.
  • the handle has bevelled upper edges from which a cut-out portion extends between a pair of handle reinforcing panels.
  • the handle reinforcing panel may also be connected to a top panel of the carrier.
  • connection between said handle reinforcing panel and said top panel may be through the intermediary of an article support flap partly defining an aperture in a top panel.
  • the invention also provides an article carrier blank useful in the construction of an article carrier as defined in the first aspect, which blank comprises a base panel, opposed side panels and end wall panels, a handle panel and a handle reinforcing panel hingedly connected to the handle panel, a partition panel extending downwardly from the handle reinforcing panel which partition panel is hingedly connected to the handle reinforcing panel so as to facilitate folding of the reinforcing panel.
  • An article carrier of the basket type is provided, adapted to accommodate a plurality of articles, for example bottles comprising a base, opposed side and end walls and a top panel with an article receiving aperture and an end panel hingedly connected to the top panel, wherein the end panel has a portion extending into the aperture so that the end panel is folded downwardly in response to insertion of an article into the aperture.
  • the aperture may be defined in part by the end panel.
  • the carrier can be neck-through basket style carrier and the top panel can be one of two top cover panels located on opposite sides of the carrying handle.
  • An article carrier blank useful in the construction of an article carrier as defined above comprising a base panel, opposed side panels and end wall panels, a top panel with an article receiving aperture and an end panel hingedly connected to the top panel, wherein the end panel has a portion extending into the aperture such that the end panel is capable of being folded downwardly upon insertion of an article into the aperture.

  • FIGURES 2, 3 and 4 show sequential steps in forming a bottle carrier from the blank depicted in Figure 1,
  • FIGURES 5 and 6 show an assembled and loaded carrier showing the handle retracted and extended
  • FIGURE 7 is a plan view of an unfolded unitary blank of paperboard from which a similar carrier according to another embodiment of the invention can be formed;
  • FIGURES 8 and 9 show an assembled and loaded carrier formed from the blank of Figure 7 showing the handle in retracted and extended positions
  • FIGURES 10 and 11 show the completed carrier of FIGURES 8 and 9 from above and to one side, with the panels closed and locked together.
  • a bottle carrier “C” is formed from a single blank 10 of paperboard or other suitable foldable sheet material and is adapted to accommodate six bottles "B" ( Figure 5) arranged in two rows of three bottles each.
  • the carrier may be formed from two or more blanks and may be adapted to hold a different number of bottles arranged in an alternative array structure, without departing from the scope of invention.
  • the article carrier comprises a plurality of panels hingedly connected together to form opposed sides, ends and base.
  • the article carrier blank 10 comprises a plurality of panels hingedly connected together in series.
  • first base wall panel 12 a first side wall panel 14, a first top wall panel 16, a first handle panel 18, a second handle panel 20, second top wall panel 22, second side wall panel 24 and a second base wall panel 26 hingedly connected one to the next in series along fold line 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38 and 40.
  • the opposed base wall panels are secured together by locking means L formed in the panels 12 and 26, or other suitable securing means well known in the art.
  • a top wall 16 and 22 are each formed from two panels 42, 44 and 48, 50 which are hingedly connected together along interrupted fold lines 46 and 52 respectively.
  • Top walls 16 and 22 further comprise one or more apertures A struck from respective panels 42, 44, 48, 50 to interrupt fold lines 46 and 52.
  • the apertures A receive an upper portion (such as the neck) of an article (such as a bottle) to be held within the carrier.
  • Each handle panel 18, 20 is provided with one or more hand apertures H to receive the user's hand in use.
  • Each end wall structure is provided with first and second end wall panels 54a, 54c, which are hingedly connected to respective side wall panels 24 and 14 along fold lines 58a and 58c.
  • first and second end wall panels 54b, 54d which are hingedly connected to respective side wall panels 24 and 14 along fold lines 58b and 58d.
  • first and second end wall panels 54b, 54d are hingedly connected to respective side wall panels 24 and 14 along fold lines 58b and 58d.
  • these bevelled corner panels allow the end wall structures to better conform to the shape of the article contained therein.
  • each support flap 76 is identical and therefore only support flap 76a will be described in any greater detail.
  • Support flap 76a is hingedly connected to top wall panels 42 and 44 along fold lines 79a and 88a respectively.
  • support flap 76a comprises three panel portions, shown in Figure 1 as panel portion 78a, 80a and 82a hingedly connected together along fold lines 84a and 86a.
  • support flap 76a protrudes into the adjacent aperture A so that when an article such as the neck of a bottle is inserted through the aperture the protruding portion engages the article and forces the support flap 76a to be folded out of alignment along fold line 79a and 88a into a downward direction.
  • the other support flaps function in an identical manner and are therefore not described in further detail.
  • partition panels are provided in the form of a series of separate, discrete partition panels 71a, 71b and 72a, 72b. Preferably, these are each hingedly connected to their respective handle reinforcing panel designated by the reference numerals 62a, 62b, 66a, 66b in Figure 1.
  • the handle reinforcing panels 62a and 62b are hingedly connected together along an extension of interrupted fold lines 34 and hingedly connected to first and second handle panels 18 and 20 along fold lines 64a and 68a respectively.
  • the centrally disposed fold line 34 is interrupted by bevelled corner portions of first and second handle panels 18, 20 and an extended cut out portion co-linear with the fold line. This assists the folding action inwardly of the handle support panels.
  • handle reinforcing panels 62b, 66b are hingedly connected to first and second handle panels 18 and 20 along fold line 64b and 68b.
  • the partition panels 71a, 72a, 71b, 72b are hingedly connected to respective handle reinforcing panel 62a, 66a, 62b and 66b along oblique fold lines 70a, 74a, 70b and 74b respectively.
  • FIG. 2 In order to form a complete carrier in a flat collapsed condition from the blank, a series of sequential folding and gluing operations is required and reference is made to Figures 2, 3 and 4.
  • the folding and gluing operations can be performed in one or more straight line gluing and packaging machines, so that the carrier is not required to be rotated or inverted to complete its construction.
  • the folding process is not limited to that described below and can be altered according to particular manufacturing requirements.
  • the handle reinforcing panels are folded inwardly along fold lines 64a, 64b and 68a, 68b such that handle reinforcing panels 62a and 62b are placed in face contacting arrangement with handle panel 18 and reinforcing panels 66a and 66b are placed in face contacting arrangement with handle panel 20 as shown in figures 2 and 3.
  • the partition panels 71a, 71b, 72a, 72b partially cover apertures A as shown in Figures 3 and 4.
  • a partitioning function is provided in the assembled carrier to help maintain a separation between adjacently loaded bottles. It is beneficial that such partitioning function can be achieved by a relatively simple arrangement and without the need for a separate partition panel arrangement as has frequently been the case.
  • the handle reinforcing panels are secured by glue or other suitable means known in the art.
  • the one side of the carrier blank is folded about central fold line 34 to be placed in overlapping relationship with the other side of the carton blank, as shown in Figure 4.
  • the opposed end wall panels are secured together by glue or suitable means in which end wall panels 54a and 54c and end wall panels 54b and 54d are placed in overlapping relationship.
  • the base wall panels 12, 26 can be secured together in conventional manner, when required.
  • the carrier is supplied to a bottler in a flat collapsed condition ready to be loaded and final construction completed.
  • the blank is supplied to a bottler in a flat, unfolded, unglued condition and then at a bottler's plant, the blank is folded and glued while loaded with a group of articles such as bottles.
  • a series of sequential folding and gluing operations is required as well as application of the blank onto a group of articles.
  • the applying, folding and gluing operations in this example can be performed most preferably in one or more gluing and packaging machines equipped with a rotating section or rotation platform where a group of articles and a half-erected blank are rotated ninety degrees about a vertical axis.
  • a flat blank as shown in Figure 1 is first lowered and applied to bottles arranged in two rows each having one or more bottles.
  • the two rows upon the application of the blank, are separated in a juxtaposed position at an appropriate horizontal distance such that the necks of the bottles are inserted into the apertures "A" respectively while the blank is lowered onto the bottles.
  • the handle reinforcing panels 62a, 62b and 66a, 66b are then folded downwardly and then inwardly along fold lines 64a, 64b and 68a, 68b such that handle reinforcing panels 62a and 62b are placed in face contacting arrangement with handle panel 18 and reinforcing panels 66a and 66b are placed in face contacting arrangement with handle panel 20.
  • the partition panels 71a, 71b, 72a, 72b are brought into abutment with the sides of the end bottles of each row and thereby folded about fold lines 70a, 70b, 74a, 74b with respect to the handle reinforcing panels 62a, 62b and 66a, 66b so that the partition panels 71a, 71b, 72a, 72b remain in a generally vertical position between the two rows.
  • the two rows of bottles are moved toward each other till they are positioned close enough to form a two-row group of bottles that is appropriate to fit in the carrier to be assembled from the blank.
  • the handle panels 18, 20 with the reinforcing panels on their inside' surfaces are folded along fold lines 32, 34, 36 to form an erected handle H while top walls 16, 22 are moved toward each other.
  • the partition panels 71a, 72a as a pair and the partition panels 71b, 72b as another pair are pulled toward each other into the gap between the two rows of bottles while being folded about fold lines 70a, 74a, 70b, 74b back into the plane of reinforcing panels 62a, 66a, 62b, 66b.
  • the handle H is fully erected and the partition panels of each pair are brought into contact with each other at the position between the two rows to form a partitioning structure. It is beneficial that the carrying handle and the partitioning structure can be automatically erected during the course of assembling the two-row group of bottles without the need for adhesive or any other means for securing panels.
  • the side wall panels 14, 24 are folded down about fold lines 30, 38 to be disposed alongside the bottles in the respective rows and then the base panels 12, 26 are folded about fold lines 28, 40 into overlapping relationship with each other.
  • the base panels 12, 26 are then interlocked in the overlapping position by the locking means L.
  • This alternative carrier forming process is beneficial in that the blank can be delivered to a bottler in a unfolded, unglued condition without the need for a crate for containing partially assembled, folded carriers.
  • the assembled carrier is shown in Figure 5 with the handle H retracted such that it does not project above the height of the tops of the bottles held therein.
  • the support flaps 78a, 80a, 82a, 78d, 80d, 82d are caused to pivot downwardly about their respective fold lines and form a supporting shoulder for those bottles at the ends of the rows in the carrier.
  • the pivoting is caused automatically by the action of the neck of the bottle B passing through the aperture.
  • the end wall panels 54c, 54a have been suitably connected together by conventional means such that the bevelled corner panels 56a, 56c, also form part of the end wall structure.
  • the handle H is depicted in a compressed, compact state in that it is lowered or retracted whilst the support flaps still engage a surface of the bottle neck. This arrangement is convenient for storage and further packaging.
  • the position of use of the carrier is shown by Figure 6, in which the handle H is raised and the handle flaps deployed so that the handle aperture can be grasped by a user.
  • the support flaps 76a, 76d have been extended upwardly but still permit supporting contact with the contained bottles B together with partitioning of the rows of bottles.
  • the handle reinforcing panels 162a, 162b, 166a, 166b broadly correspond to those described and illustrated in connection with the Figure 1 blank except that in this embodiment the fold lines 170a, 170b, 174a, 174b terminate at the intersection of fold lines 164a, 132; 164b, 132; 168a, 136 and 168b, 136.
  • the partition panels 171a, 171b, 172a, 172b are of a different shape, extend to the same fold line junctions as aforesaid with regard to the partition panels and are hingedly connected to the adjacent support flaps 176a, 176b, 176c, 176d and to end edges of the panels 144 and 148 of the top panel.
  • the support flaps 176a, 176b, 176c, 176d are of a different shape and size to those in the Figure 1 blank and comprise one centrally located fold line 184a instead of two spaced fold lines.
  • Figure 9 The use position, to be hand held by a user, is shown in Figure 9 which broadly corresponds with the Figure 6 construction described above, and hence need not be described in further detail.
  • Figure 10 is an isometric view of an assembled carrier including bottles with the handle H' in retracted position and the necks of the bottles securely retained in the apertures within panel 142 of the top panel.
  • the corresponding panel 144 is shielded from view in this drawing, being at an oblique angle to the panel 142 to which it is adjoined.
  • Extension of the handle H' causes the carrier to assume the configuration depicted in Figure 11, in which part of the partition panel 166a provides additional support to the handle H ⁇
  • the support flaps in both embodiments articulate themselves in such a way as to pivot automatically when the carrier is loading over the bottle's neck.
  • Both embodiments provide an economical blank and carrier, using less material, which can be delivered flat and constructed without rotation or inversion on a straight line machine.
  • a two-ply handle is formed to reinforce the handle whilst the partition panels are respectively separated from the handle reinforcement panels which simplifies the folding operation but simultaneously provides partition panelling without the need for a totally separate partition panel arrangement.
  • the present invention and its preferred embodiment relates to an arrangement for providing a more economical basket carrier.
  • the invention can be applied to a variety of carriers and is not limited to those of the basket style hereinbefore described and could be used for numerous applications for example a wraparound carton or fully enclosed carton.
  • hinged connection should not be construed as necessarily referring to a single fold line only: indeed it is envisaged that hinged connection can be formed from one or more of the following, a score line, a frangible line or a fold line, without departing from the scope of invention.
  • the size and shape of the panels and apertures may be adjusted to accommodate articles of differing size or shape, alternative top and base closure structures may be used.
  • the carton may accommodate more than one article in different arrays.
