Dass auf ihre Verwendung bisher trotzdem nicht verzichtet werden konnte, lag zum einen am Erfordernis relativ hoher Schleifgeschwindigkeiten für die gängigsten Werkstoffe und damit des Bedarfs einer entsprechend schnellen, kontinuierlichen Bereitstellung von Körnern für den Schleifprozess, zum andern an der Unmöglichkeit auf konventionellen Werkstoffen bei allfälligen Schleifrichtungswechseln qualitativ identische Resultate zu erzielen (bei Holz z. B. bedingt durch seine faserige Struktur). Beim Kontaktgerät handelt es sich üblicherweise um eine Kontaktwalze oder um einen durchgehenden oder aus einzelnen Segmenten zusammengesetzten Balken, d. h. ein sogenanntes Schleifkissen. Bis zur kompletten Nutzung des Schleifmittels wird das Schleifpapier immer wieder hin- und zurückgespult, wobei nach jedem Durchgang die Aufwickelwelle jeweils zur Abwickelwelle und die Abwickelwelle wieder zur Aufwickelwelle wird. Gegenstand der vorliegenden Erfindung ist die Kombination der vorstehend beschriebenen Schleifvorrichtung mit einer Steuerung (23), die das Problem der Diskontinuitäten bei der Beschickung und dem Schleifprozess löst. Die Schleifvorrichtung in der durch die Patentschrift von Paul Ernst bekannten Form lässt sich in der Praxis nur für das Schleifen jeweils geringer Chargen oder von Einzelstücken verwenden. Nach Erreichen des Endes der Schleifmittelrolle steht diese Vorrichtung bis zur Umsteuerung der Drehrichtung vorübergehend nicht weiter zur Beschickung mit Werkstücken zur Verfügung. Bei Materialien, die aufgrund Ihrer Struktur immer in gleicher Richtung zum Vorschub geschliffen werden müssen (z. B. Holz in der Regel im Gegenlauf), muss für solche Materialien vorerst gar der Rückspulvorgang der ganzen Schleifmittelrolle abgewartet werden. Bei den üblichen Schnittgeschwindigkeiten für konventionelle Materialien (z. B. Holz rd. 20 m/sec.) und den gängigen Schleifmittelrollen-Längen (rund 50 - 200 Meter) erfährt eine solche Vorrichtung etwa alle 2 - 8 Sekunden einen Unterbruch in der Beschickung.
