Description

The present invention relates to a document security strip, comprising a support on which is formed in the longitudinal direction of the strip an alternation of generally metallized regions and generally transparent regions, said alternation being capable of establishing a contrast on a so-called global scale. at the level of the document to be secured so as to constitute protection against the reproduction of the documents with which the tape will be associated.

And the invention also relates to security documents incorporating such a strip according to the invention.

It is already known to associate bands such as those mentioned above with security documents.

There figure 1 thus represents a strip 10 of generally known type.

The strip may have a general multilayer structure.

These generally metallized regions are arranged so as to provide between them, in the longitudinal direction of the strip (denoted X), generally transparent regions 12.

L'aménagement des régions 11 et 12 est réalisé de manière à produire selon la direction longitudinale de la bande une alternance de régions généralement métallisées 11 et de régions généralement transparentes 12.The arrangement of regions 11 and 12 is carried out so as to produce, in the longitudinal direction of the strip, an alternation of generally metallized regions 11 and generally transparent regions 12.

The generally metallized regions 11 thus constitute generally discrete metallized elements.

These regions can for example be smooth, purely reflective metallized regions.

A strip of the known type of strip 10 constitutes a security sign which can be associated with a document.

Such an association can for example implement a transfer on the document of the entire strip, with its support.

Such a transfer may in particular be a hot transfer.

Dans ce cas, le support doit être transparent (au moins en regard des régions 12).In this case, the support must be transparent (at least with respect to regions 12).

It is also possible to carry out a selective transfer of certain regions of the strip (for example the generally metallized regions 11).

D'autres techniques peuvent également être mises en oeuvre pour associer la bande au document à sécuriser (estampage, etc...).Other techniques can also be implemented to associate the strip with the document to be secured (stamping, etc.).

There figure 2 thus illustrates a document 20 such as a bank note, to which a strip of the type of that of the figure 1 was associated.

The generally metallized regions 11 of the strip are visible on the document, and constitute a sign of security.

It is specified that the regions located between the generally metallized regions 11 once the strip associated with the note can be covered with a varnish producing a visible effect to the naked eye. This varnish can correspond for example to a layer of the strip associated with the support of this strip.

A non-limiting example of such a security strip will be found in the document EP 522 217 .

Such security strips therefore constitute a sign of security for documents.

In particular, each generally metallized region 11 forms a significant contrast with the generally transparent regions 12 which surround it in the longitudinal direction of the strip.

And these regions are chosen to be large enough for this contract to correspond to a contrast on a so-called global scale at the level of the document to be secured.

This contrast on a global scale (or “macro-contrast”) corresponds in particular to good protection against the reproduction of the document with which the strip will be associated (using a photocopier).

The document WO 97/19820 A1 describes a medium intended to be applied to a document. The support includes raised structures partially covered with a reflective layer arranged to form the word "VALID". The geometric parameters of the structures can vary locally to produce a diffractive optical effect.

The document US 2003/0058491 A1 describes a security device comprising a discontinuous metallic layer. The metal layer is marked with a microstructure.

An aim of the invention is to make it possible to further improve the level of security associated with document security strips of the general type described above.

Another aim of the invention is to provide signs of authentication of security documents which effectively complement the provisions mentioned above regarding protection against reproduction of the document.

In order to achieve these goals, the invention proposes, according to a first aspect, a document security strip, according to claim 1.

According to a second aspect, the invention also proposes a security document incorporating a strip according to one of the aspects mentioned above.

Other aspects will appear better on reading the following description of the invention, made with reference to the appended drawings in which, in addition to the figures 1 and 2 which have already been commented on above:
  • there Figure 3 is a schematic representation of a document security strip,
  • there figure 4 a schematic representation of a document security strip,
  • THE figures 5a and 5b are two schematic representations of two particular embodiments of the invention.

There Figure 3 schematically represents a document security strip 30.

This strip 30, like all of the document security strips according to the invention, takes up the general characteristics which were mentioned above with regard to the figure 1 .

We thus still find, according to the longitudinal direction of the strip, an alternation (we specify that the notion of alternation implies in the sense of the present text a recurring repetition) of:
  • generally metallized regions 31,
  • and generally transparent regions 32.

And in the case of the security strips according to the invention as in the case of strips of known type described with reference to the figures 1 and 2 , the strip can be associated with a document to be secured by transfer, by stamping or by another type of technique.

We notice on the Figure 3 that the generally metallized regions 31 are associated with additional elements.

More precisely, these additional elements are optically active elements 310.

We will see with reference to the other figures that it is possible to associate different types of optically active elements with a security strip according to the invention.

And in all cases, the optically active elements can be in the form of numbers or characters.

More generally, these optically active elements can correspond to any desired predetermined graphics.

In the case of the Figure 3 , the optically active elements 310 appear in the form of numbers (these numbers may for example correspond to the denomination of a bank note).

The optically active elements 310 are capable of producing in their combination with their background (in the case of the Figure 3 , the generally metallized regions 31) a determined optical effect.

This optical effect can correspond to a contrast.

This optical effect can also correspond to a visual effect depending on the angles of illumination and/or observation of the strip. This will particularly be the case when the optically active elements are made from diffracting and/or holographic patterns.

The generally transparent regions 32 which are interposed between the generally metallized regions 31 are preferably associated with a varnish producing a shiny effect visible to the naked eye.

It should be noted that the generally metallized regions 31 and the generally transparent regions 32, if they are represented in the form of rectangles in the figures, can generally have any desired geometry.

The geometry of the generally metallized regions of the strip will, however, generally have characteristics of sufficiently large size and compactness allowing them to effectively fulfill a function of protection against reproduction.

We specify that we can refer to the document EP 522 217 for a (non-limiting) example of description of such conditions of size and compactness.

Revenant à l'exemple particulier de la figure 3, les éléments optiquement actifs 310 sont donc constitués à l'intérieur des régions généralement métallisées 31.Returning to the particular example of Figure 3 , the optically active elements 310 are therefore constituted inside the generally metallized regions 31.

In any case, the optically active element 310 has optical properties which are distinct from those of the generally metallized region 31, so as to produce an optical effect as mentioned above.

The optically active element 310 may have a homogeneous structure.

It can also be made from a metallization.

And the optically active elements 310 may include optically variable elements.

By “optically variable elements” we mean elements whose optical properties can vary depending on the angle of illumination and/or observation. These may in particular be diffractive structures and/or holograms.

Optically variable elements are therefore optically active elements of a particular type.

The optically active elements 310 can generally be made up, in addition to the purely reflective metallized zone, of one of the following security elements:
  • a zone containing diffraction lines,
  • a zone comprising a diffraction mat,
  • an area containing a hologram,
  • a demetallized zone of a generally metallized region,
  • an area bearing a print.

And these optically active elements 310 can also be produced in the form of structures comprising several security elements as mentioned above.

De manière générale, les éléments optiquement actifs produisent ainsi un effet optique à une échelle inférieure à l'échelle « globale » à laquelle se produit l'effet de contraste entre les régions généralement métallisées 31 et les régions généralement transparentes 32.Generally speaking, the optically active elements thus produce an optical effect on a scale smaller than the “global” scale at which the contrast effect occurs between the generally metallized regions 31 and the generally transparent regions 32.

This optical effect is produced at a scale that we will call the detail scale. The optically active elements 310 thus produce optical effects localized in band 30.

They allow an observer to detect the presence of the optically active element, thus allowing identification and authentication of the document with which the strip is associated.

The optically active elements 310 shown on the Figure 3 are large enough to be easily observed with the naked eye.

It is specified that it is also possible to produce such optically active elements with a sufficiently small dimension so that they cannot be immediately perceptible to the naked eye.

In this case, only careful examination of the document can reveal the presence of these optically active elements, and lead to the authentication of the document.

We also notice on the Figure 3 that the optically active elements 310 are associated in identification with the generally metallized regions 31 of the strip.

It is specified that by “identification” we mean the characteristic according to which the optically active patterns 310 are systematically located opposite the generally metallized regions.

As will be seen, it is also possible to associate such optically active elements with generally transparent regions of the strip. And in this case again, this association can in particular be made by identification.

There Figure 3 thus represents a particular mode, in which the optically active elements 310 are associated with generally metallized regions.

As has been said, these optically active elements may include a diffraction mat.

We define a “diffraction mat” as an area diffracting light at a single wavelength, in all directions in space. Such a diffraction mat thus appears to an observer as having the same appearance, whatever the angle of illumination and/or observation of the mat.

According to a particular variant which corresponds to the schematic representation of the figure 5a , such optically active elements produced in the form of purely reflective metallized regions can be arranged, in the longitudinal direction of the strip, on either side of at least certain generally metallized regions of the strip.

And said generally metallized regions of the band can in this case still be generally diffractive regions.

There figure 5a represents thus:
  • an alternation of:
    • ➢ generally metallized regions 51, which can in particular be diffractive, and
    • ➢ generally transparent regions 52,
  • and zones 53 which correspond to optically active elements, and which are produced in the form of purely reflective metallized regions.

Regions 53 are in the variant illustrated on the figure 5a arranged immediately adjacent to the metallized region 51 on either side of which they are arranged.

It is also possible according to the variant illustrated on the figure 5b to provide that the zones 53 which correspond to the optically active elements are arranged so as to provide, in the longitudinal direction of the strip, an interval between each purely reflective region 53 and the generally metallized region 51 with which it is associated.

La figure 5b illustre de tels intervalles 54.There figure 5b illustrates such intervals 54.

We specify that these intervals can for example be transparent.

La figure 4 illustre un autre mode. There Figure 4 illustrates another mode.

We specify that all of the characteristics that were mentioned above regarding:
  • generally metallic regions and generally transparent regions,
  • optically active elements,
  • and the association of the band with a document to be secured,
are applicable to this embodiment as to all embodiments of the invention.

In the case of band 40 of the figure 4 , the optically active elements 420 are associated with generally transparent regions 42 of the strip.

And the strip also includes regions 41 that are generally metallized.

Ici encore, les éléments optiquement actifs 420 peuvent donc prendre diverses formes. Here again, the optically active elements 420 can therefore take various forms.

It should be noted that in this embodiment, these optically active elements can also correspond to a metallized zone of a generally transparent region 42.

Here again, the optically active elements can be produced in the form of purely reflective metallized zones.

And according to an alternative embodiment, it is here again possible to provide for the optically active elements to be produced in the form of purely reflective zones arranged on either side of at least certain transparent regions of the strip.

According to a variant implementation of the invention, it is also possible to associate luminescent or optically absorbing patterns with the security strip.

In particular, such patterns can be printed covering the strip.

This printing can be carried out before associating the tape with the document to be secured, or after.

This impression can be made in such a way as to:
  • Only cover (at least partially) generally metallized regions of the strip,
  • Only cover (at least partially) generally transparent regions of the strip,
  • Cover (at least partially) both generally metallized and generally transparent regions of the strip.

It is also possible to integrate such luminescent or absorbent patterns inside the strip.

This can be achieved for example by placing in the thickness of the multilayer structure of the strip a layer comprising such patterns.

The invention thus makes it possible to increase the level of security associated with known bands as described with reference to the figures 1 and 2 , in particular by allowing the identification and authentication of the document with which the band is associated.

It should be noted that the different modes and variants of implementation of the invention presented above can be combined with each other.

In particular, it is possible to provide optically active elements in association with both generally metallized regions and generally transparent regions of the strip.

It is also possible to have optically active elements that extend over both a generally metallized region and an adjacent generally transparent region, as long as said optically active element produces a desired optical effect.
