Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a support structure for a seat, in particular a support structure for incorporation in a seat frame, the support structure having a wire framework comprising two lateral side wires and a plurality of transverse wires extending between the two lateral side wires and providing load bearing support for upholstery of the seat.
  • Support structures of the aforementioned kind are very well known and may have various configurations determined by the design of a seat in which the support structure is to be mounted.
  • a support structure according to the prior art is known from GB 2 342 287 A.
  • the support structure disclosed in this prior art document comprises a wire framework having two lateral side wires suspendable in a seat frame and between which extend a plurality of transverse wires which provide load bearing support for upholstery of a seat.
  • the transverse wires are attached to the lateral side wires by being wound around the latter in the form of a helix with an end portion of the respective transverse wire extending substantially perpendicular to the respective lateral side wire.
  • Some of the transverse wires extend beyond the respective lateral side wire and terminate in free ends which can be formed as hook-like fingers for attachment to the seat frame.
  • the knot used for attaching a transverse wire to a lateral side wire in general has the shape of a helix with the end portion of the respective transverse wire being arranged substantially perpendicular to the direction of the respective lateral side wire, there is a significant risk of injury for an operator when manufacturing the support structure or for an operator at a customer side when modifying the support structure or assembling a seat suspension arrangement comprising the support structure.
  • there is a risk of injury when packaging or unpackaging the support structure, or when attaching something, e.g. the upholstery, foam, trim or other components, to the support structure.
  • the object underlying the present invention is to provide a support structure which avoids the risk of this kind of injuries.
  • the support structure of the present invention comprises a wire framework having two lateral side wires and a plurality of transverse wires extending between the two lateral side wires, the transverse wires providing load bearing support for upholstery of a seat. At least one of the transverse wires is attached to the side wires by being wound around the side wires such that an end portion thereof extends substantially parallel to the respective side wire. Consequently, this transverse wire is attached to the side wires by a new kind of a knot which allows to avoid any risk of injury for an operator when manufacturing the support structure or a seat suspension arrangement comprising a seat frame and such a support structure.
  • the support structure of the present invention may comprise at least one further transverse wire which is attached to the side wires by being wound around the latter such that it extends beyond the lateral side wires and terminates in end portions which may be used for attaching the support structure to a seat frame.
  • the end portions of this at least one further transverse wire may be formed in hook-like fingers for easily attaching the support structure to the seat frame.
  • the at least one further transverse wire may terminate in free ends that extend beyond the lateral side wires and can flex independently of one another relatively to a portion of the wire framework bounded by the two lateral side wires. In the latter case, the laterally extending free ends are unconnected and enable an effective adjustable lumbar support as the freely extending ends can provide laterally contoured support in a lumbar region without interfering with the arching of the two lateral side wires.
  • the transverse wires of the support structure may have different diameters.
  • Fig. 1 shows a support structure for incorporation in a seat frame, which may also be designated as a suspension mat or a pad.
  • the support structure is in particular adapted to provide support for upholstery of a respective seat, e.g. an automotive seat.
  • the support structure 2 comprises a pair of lateral side wires or side rails 4 which are interconnected by a plurality of transverse wires 5; 8 extending between the lateral side wires 4 and being anchored or attached to the lateral side wires 4 by being wound around the latter.
  • the wires 5, 8 have anchored portions 6, 9 angled in the plane of the support structure as illustrated, so that the support structure itself becomes extendable under loading placed upon the seat.
  • the transverse wires 5, 8 extend through a center cord 12 or tube of paper or synthetic plastic material which serves to maintain a pre-defined vertical spacing between the transverse wires 5, 8.
  • the diameter of the wires 8 differs from the diameter of the wires 5.
  • the wires 8 are of greater diameter than the wires 5 in order to provide a greater degree of stiffness. It may be recommendable to place the wires 8 having the greater diameter in a lumbar region of the support structure in order to provide a more stable and rigid support for the seat occupant in the lumbar region.
  • the support structure 2 may also use only wires 5, 8 having one and the same diameter or having more than two different diameters.
  • the wires designated by reference numeral 8 are anchored to the lateral side wires 4 by being wound around the latter and then extend beyond the lateral side wires to terminate in elongated end portions 10.
  • These elongated end portions 10 may serve to attach the support structure 2 to the seat frame (not shown in Fig. 1).
  • some or all of these elongated end portions 10 may be formed into hook-like fingers which can be used to easily attach the support structure 2 to the seat frame.
  • the hooks may extend both in the support plane of the support structure 2 and perpendicular thereto or in any other desired direction with respect to the support plane.
  • Some of the elongated end portions 10 extending beyond the lateral side wires 4 may also constitute free ends that can flex independently of one another relatively to a portion of the wire framework constituted by the wires 5, 8 and bounded by the lateral side wires 4. These free end portions are consequently unconnected and enable an effective adjustable lumbar support to be provided by arching of the two lateral side wires 4 under the action of a tension means, e.g. a Bowden cable arrangement, as the freely extending end portions 10 can provide laterally contoured support in the lumbar region without interfering with the arching of the two lateral side wires 4.
  • a tension means e.g. a Bowden cable arrangement
  • All the wires 5, 8 and the elongated end portions 10 extend in a plane generally parallel to the wire framework.
  • each hook may be individually angled. This in particular allows those elongated end portions 10, which are not connected to the seat frame, to conform best to the contour of the seat surface.
  • the respective elongated end portion 10 may be directly hooked into the seat frame or, alternatively, may be coupled to the seat frame by means of tension springs anchored between the seat frame and the respective elongated end portions 10.
  • the support structure shown in Fig. 1 can be used to provide non-adjustable lumbar support.
  • preferably means are provided for adjustably arching the lateral side wires 4 to enable horizontal adjustment of the lumbar support.
  • These means may in particular comprise a Bowden cable arrangement to be actuated by a manual or electric actuating mechanism, as e.g. disclosed in US 5,988,745 A.
  • transverse wires designated by reference numeral 8 extend beyond the lateral side wires 4
  • the transverse wires designated by reference numeral 5 do not extend beyond the lateral side wires 4 but are attached or affixed to the lateral side wires 4 by means of a knot.
  • the end portions of the transverse wires 5 are wound around the lateral side wires 4 such that the end portion 7 extends substantially parallel to the respective lateral side wire 4. This means that the end portion 7 of each transverse wire 5 does not extend from the wire framework beyond the respective lateral side wire 4, but lies substantially in the support plane of the wire framework and is somewhat hidden by the respective lateral side wire 4 and consequently does not constitute a source of danger for an injury for an operator.
  • Fig. 2 shows an enlarged view illustrating the different attachments of one transverse wire 5 and one transverse wire 8 to a lateral side wire 4 in accordance with the present invention.
  • the transverse wire 8 is merely wound around the lateral side wire 4 in a helix-manner and extends beyond the lateral side wire 4 to form an elongated end portion 10.
  • the transverse wire 5 is also wound around the lateral side wire 4, but is attached to the lateral side wire 4 by means of a particular knot of such a kind that the end portion 7 of the lateral side wire 5 extends substantially parallel to the lateral side wire 4 without extending beyond the lateral side wire 4.
  • the end portion 7 of the transverse wire 5 is first wound around the lateral side wire 4 and then extends from the bottom up (or vice versa) behind the remaining portion of the transverse wire 5 such that the end portion 7 extends substantially parallel to the lateral side wire 4.
  • the general direction of the end portion 7 is the same as that of the lateral side wire 4.
  • the support structure 2 of the present invention may also comprise only transverse wires of the kind designated by reference numeral 5.
