Definitions

  • the invention relates to a supporting element for at least one rod of a rod assembly for exerting forces on a construction, wherein the supporting element comprises: a body which is provided with at least one partially spherical cavity for receiving a pivot and which has at least one support surface which is adapted to contact the construction, and at least one pivot which is connected to a coupling and which is adapted for coupling to the rod.
  • Such a supporting element is known from NL-A-9202239.
  • Such a prior art supporting element is only suitable for exerting on a construction a force originating from only one rod. This means in practice that the rod must extend transversely of the surface on which the force must be exerted, or that a combination of different supporting elements must be made in order to be able to work with a plurality of rods, as is usually the case in practice.
  • the assembly of a combination of such supporting elements requires joining together two or more such supporting elements. This involves the danger of relative shifting of the supporting elements, which can cause unstable and therefore hazardous situations. Constructing a ' rod assembly with such separate supporting elements is furthermore difficult; separate supporting elements must often be held fast in positions which are difficult to access before the above stated supporting element is fixed by co- action with other supporting elements of the same group.
  • the object of the present invention is to provide such a supporting element which does not result in these drawbacks.
  • This object is achieved in that the body is provided with at least one second cavity for a second pivot, and that the device comprises a second pivot which is adapted for coupling to a second rod of the rod assembly.
  • this supporting element it is thus possible with this supporting element to exert a resultant force on a surface of the construction by means of two rods .
  • Such a supporting element is for instance suitable for placing in a corner between two surfaces of the construction. This is particularly attractive when the body comprises at least one second support surface adapted to contact the construction.
  • the supporting element can be placed with both support surfaces in a corner of the construction, wherein the two rods exert a resultant force on the supporting element.
  • a more recommended embodiment is however provided with a third cavity for a third pivot, wherein the device comprises a third pivot which is adapted for coupling to a third rod of the rod assembly.
  • the device comprises a third pivot which is adapted for coupling to a third rod of the rod assembly.
  • a field of application for this embodiment lies for instance in the temporary repair of openings in a ship's side.
  • An opening in a ship's side resulting from for instance a collision or from acts of war has to be sealed quickly in order to prevent flooding of the compartment of the ship situated behind the opening and the associated instability of the ship .
  • Use can herein be made of the invention, for instance to temporarily fix against such an opening a plate which seals the opening.
  • Use can be made for this purpose of a rod assembly which is adapted by means of a number of supporting elements according to the invention to exert a force which extends substantially perpendicularly of the surface of the sealing plate and with which the plate is pressed against the opening.
  • Use can also be made of such supporting elements to support the rod assembly against the other walls or possible structural components of the compartment in question.
  • a further embodiment provides the measure that the body is formed to limit the angular deflection of the pivots to positions in which a stable situation of the rod assembly can be obtained. Potentially unstable, and thus unsafe, situations are hereby avoided.
  • the outer pivots are rotatable between a position in which the axis connected to the relevant pivot extends parallel to the support surface and a position in which the axis extends perpendicularly of the support surface; and between a position in which the axis extends parallel to the connecting line between the centre of the pivots and a position in which the axis extends at a perpendicular angle between the connecting axis and parallel to the support surface; and that the inner pivot is rotatable between a position in which the axis connected to the pivot extends parallel to the support surface and a position in which the axis extends perpendicularly of the support surface; and between two positions extending at an angle of 6 ⁇ D on either side of the central perpendicular plane of the outer pivots .
  • each of the outer pivots can extend within a segment of a sphere, which segment of a sphere corresponds to 1/8 of a sphere.

  • the third coupling element 11' is not connected to a rod. • the deflection of the associated axis is limited to a segment of a sphere, the extension of which in the vertical plane is limited to the upper half, and is limited in the horizontal plane by the angle ⁇ .
  • This angle can have a size of for instance 12 ⁇ O.
  • FIGS 1 and 2 of the drawings show how two eyes 27, 28 are fixed to the supporting element. These eyes 27 serve for fastening cables or belts to the supporting element. These cables or belts can also be used to transmit forces which play a part in the play of forces of the rod assembly. It will however be apparent that these cables or belts can only transmit tensile forces.
