Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a method of processing postal items in a sorting machine using a code printed on each mailpiece, in the form for example of a two-dimensional matrix code of the machine-readable bar code type, this code can encode a shipping identification code, an "extended customer code” known as "Customer Applied Identifier” or a tri-distribution or routing code and the corresponding machine.
  • a sending identification code known as "chronomarch” or "idTag"
  • chronomarch or "idTag”
  • idTag an automatic address recognition operation by OCR
  • a sending identification code is generated and the identification code is printed under the form of a barcode on the surface of the mailing.
  • This sending identification code in a manner known per se serves for the recovery of the sorting information in the database of the sorting machine to perform the sorting machine of each mail item during successive passes in machine.
  • An automatic postal sorting process is characterized by its error rate, which is representative of the amount of mail items improperly processed by the automatic sorting process.
  • US-2002/0122569 discloses a method according to the preamble of claim 1.
  • the object of the invention is to provide an improvement contributing to reducing the error rate in a postal mail processing method in which the use of two-dimensional codes printed on the postal items for the sorting machine is provided. of these.
  • the matching in memory of the code printed on the mailpiece and the digital footprint characterizing the mailing consists in storing in all the attributes of the memory record of the digital fingerprint characterizing the mailing all or part of the information encoded in the printed code. In a way, we have a digital footprint reinforced by information derived from the code printed on the mailing.
  • the invention also relates to a sorting machine according to claim 7.
  • French Patent No. 2841673 describes a method for forming a digital fingerprint from the image of the surface of a mailpiece as defined above and for comparing two fingerprints and determining a similarity between them.
  • the method according to the invention can be easily implemented on an existing postal sorting installation. It has been found that the implementation of the process according to the invention can contribute to lowering the error rate to around 0.06%.
  • the figure 1 illustrates by a flowchart a first embodiment of the method according to the invention during the first passage in the sorting machine of a postal item in which the printed bar code is an identification code or alternatively an extended customer code.
  • the figure 2 illustrates by a flow diagram a first embodiment of the method according to the invention during the second pass or a subsequent passage in a sorting machine of a postal item in which the printed bar code is an identification code or alternatively a extended client code.
  • the figure 3 illustrates by a flowchart a second embodiment of the method according to the invention during the first passage in the sorting machine of a postal item in which the printed bar code is a tri-distribution code or routing.
  • the figure 4 illustrates by a flowchart a second embodiment of the method according to the invention during the second pass or a subsequent passage in a mail sorting machine in which the printed bar code is a tri-distribution code or routing.
  • the figure 5 illustrates by a flowchart the steps of a third embodiment of the method according to the invention for sorting postal items.
  • the method for sorting mailpieces according to the invention is intended to be implemented in a postal sorting machine including a barcode reading system for example and a system arranged to generate digital fingerprints (or image signatures) as described in the application for French Patent No. 2841673 .
  • the digital image formed for the postal item is derived from a digital print called hereinafter Vid characterizing the mail item and recorded.
  • said digital fingerprint in correspondence with the two-dimensional code (in the case of the examples a barcode) printed on the mailpiece so that during a second pass or a next pass in machine of the mailing, if the barcode can not be read correctly, that is to say if the information encoded in the barcode could not be extracted completely, one exploits the correspondence in memory of the barcode printed on the mailpiece and the digital fingerprint characterizing the mailpiece to fully recover the barcode and continue sorting machine mailing.
  • this barcode can be a sending identification code or idTag that is generated and printed on the mailpiece during its first passage in the sorting machine.
  • the method according to the invention can be extended by analogy to an extended customer code or "CAI" which is printed on the mailing by the sender (the customer) or a sort code that is also generated and printed on the mailing during its first passage in the machine.
  • CAI extended customer code
  • the figure 1 illustrates the different steps of a first embodiment of the method of processing postal items according to the invention during the first passage in the sorting machine of a postal item P in the case where the bar code printed on the surface of the postal item is an identification code which serves as a logical address for the retrieval of the sorting information.
  • a digital image of the surface of the mailpiece P having the address information A is formed to perform an OCR automatic address recognition operation.
  • the result of the operation 10 makes it possible to extract the sorting information.
  • a identification code indicated by idTag in the figures to be printed in the form of a bar code CI on the screen is generated in a machine in step 11. 'mailing.
  • the CI barcode can encode various information such as, for example, the postal operator's reference, the identification of the sorting machine responsible for printing the identification code, the date, the time, the sequential number of the sending in the given time, etc ....
  • the bar code CI or idTag printed by the machine is stored in memory of the sorting machine in match with sort information or attributes for their subsequent retrieval as is well known.
  • step 12 the digital image formed in step 9 is derived from a digital fingerprint Vid of the mailpiece surface including the distribution address information A and in step 13, stores in the memory of the sorting machine the digital fingerprint Vid characterizing said mail item in correspondence with the idTag (CI) identification barcode. More particularly according to the invention, this mapping consists in adding to the attributes of the memory record of the digital fingerprint Vid additional attributes constituted by some or all of the information encoded in the identification bar code (CI). . We have a sort of reinforced digital footprint.
  • step 15 if the identification bar code can be read completely, it is exploited directly to retrieve the sort information as is well known.
  • step 15 if the identification bar code can not be read completely, that is to say that the information contained in the barcode can not be extracted completely, a digital image is formed at 17 the surface of the current mailpiece having the address information A and derives from this digital image a current footprint Vid-c. Then one looks for 18 among the digital fingerprints Vid stored in memory in step 13 those which have additional attributes corresponding to the information extracted from the partial reading of the barcode in step 14 and in addition with the footprints Vid found one proceeds to their comparison with the current fingerprint Vid-c to detect a similarity. This second comparison is made on the local and global attributes of the fingerprints as described in the request for French Patent No. 2841673 .
  • a idTag identification code is retrieved by correspondence or in the attributes of the fingerprint, which makes it possible to recover the sorting information for the postal item P and thus to continue the process. sorting machine of this shipment.
  • step 17 leading to identify a fingerprint by comparison with the current fingerprint Vid and then retrieve the corresponding identification code could be implemented between steps 15 and 16 redundantly for additional control purpose good reading of the barcode, that is to say even if it has been read completely, so as to further reduce the error rate.
  • the CAI extended customer code is printed by the customer, for example in the form of a CI barcode, on the surface of the mailpiece. It is used to retrieve sorting information (or even address information) from an address file created and supplied by the customer himself.
  • step 9 in the first pass of a mailpiece P in a machine, a digital image is formed of the surface of the postal item comprising the address information A and also the extended customer code CAI.
  • step 10 of automatic address recognition by OCR is not performed since the address information (or sorting) is already recorded in the client file as indicated above .
  • the CAI extended customer code printed on the postal item is read by machine in the form of the bar code CI.
  • the digital image formed in step 9 is derived from a digital fingerprint Vid of the surface of the mailpiece and in step 13 the digital fingerprint Vid is stored in memory of the sorting machine. characterizing the mailing in correspondence with the CAI extended customer code.
  • the digital fingerprint Vid can be enhanced with all or part of the CAI extended client code as indicated above for idTag identification code.
  • step 15 if the bar code CI can be read completely, it is exploited directly to retrieve at 16 the (sorting) address information in the client file as is known.
  • step 15 if the bar code CI can not be read completely, a digital image of the surface of the current mailpiece is formed at 17 and a current fingerprint Vid-c is derived from this digital image.
  • the extended client code CAI is retrieved, which makes it possible to retrieve the (sorting) address information in the client address file and thus to continue the sorting machine of this shipment.
  • the figure 3 illustrates the different steps of a second embodiment of the method of processing postal items for a bar code that encodes a tri-distribution code or routing.
  • a digital image 1 of the surface of the mail P comprising the address information A is formed at 19 in order to perform an automatic address recognition operation OCR.
  • a tri-distribution bar code for example, encoding sorting information indicated by ACH or distribution sorting indicated by DISTRI resulting from the operation 20, is printed by the sorting machine on the mailpiece at step 21
  • the digital image formed in step 19 is derived from a digital fingerprint Vid as described above, and in step 23, the digital impression Vid characterizing the sorting machine is stored in the memory of the sorting machine. said postal item and adding to the additional attributes of the fingerprint memory record numerically some or all of the information encoded in the tri-distribution barcode.
  • step 25 If the tri-distribution bar code can be read completely (step 25), it is used conventionally to continue sorting the machine. If the tri-distribution bar code can not be read completely at 25, then at 27 an image of the surface of the consignment is formed and this current image is derived from a current imprint Vid-c of the surface of the transmission. mailing. At 28 a digital fingerprint Vid is identified as for step 18 on the figure 2 to retrieve a tri-distribution bar code that is used to continue the sorting machine.
  • FIG 5 a variant embodiment of the method according to the invention is shown in the form of a simplified flowchart with reading of an identification bar code.
  • 29 is formed in a digital image of the surface of the mailpiece P having the address information A to perform an automatic address recognition operation OCR.
  • an identification code idTag is generated for the postal item P and the representative sorting data (attributes) of the result of the automatic address recognition by OCR are recorded in memory in correspondence with the identification code idTag which is printed as a CI barcode on the surface of the mailing.
  • the digital image is derived from a digital fingerprint Vid and the digital fingerprint is stored in memory in correspondence with the identification code idTag.
  • step 33 if the information contained in the identification bar code CI can be extracted completely, proceed in step 34 and following to a control of the identification bar code as explained in connection with the first mode embodiment of the method according to the invention.
  • step 34 from the identification bar code completely read at 31, the corresponding numerical fingerprint is recovered in memory and this digital fingerprint Vid is compared to the current digital fingerprint Vid- c formed in step 32 to check the concordance between these two digital fingerprints. If a match is not detected at 36, the mailing is removed from the automatic processing process to be processed manually at 37, or the automatic processing process continues at 38 after the sorting data has been retrieved by means of the code. identification bars.
  • step 33 the identification bar code CI can not be read completely, then 39 is reconstructed a set of candidate bar codes.
  • the list of candidate barcodes can be generated by allowing a greater probability of error when reading the bar code at 31 or by generating all possible combinations for the portion of information that is not readable at 31.
  • step 41 the Vid fingerprints corresponding respectively to the candidate barcodes obtained in step 39 are recovered in memory.
  • the global, local attributes are compared. and additional current imprint with those of each of the fingerprints corresponding to each candidate barcode. If no match is detected at 42, the corresponding mailing is discarded at 37 of the automatic processing process. On the contrary, in the case where a concordance is detected, the automatic processing process continues at 38 after retrieval of the identification bar code and therefore of the sorting data.
  • the method of processing postal items as described above can also be applied to a customer code or a tri-distribution code or routing and implemented on existing sorting machines.
