Definitions
- the present invention relates to methods for detecting an oil deficiency condition in an internal combustion engine with one provided in the oil circuit Pressure sensor that provides a continuous output signal. Furthermore, the Invention an arrangement designed to carry out the method.
- the invention is therefore based on the object, method for detecting a To provide oil shortage condition, the reliable determination of the oil shortage condition without the need of an oil level sensor. Further an arrangement for carrying out the method is to be provided.
- This particular Minimum oil pressure value is preferably determined empirically on a motor test bench and stored in a table memory. The essential factors of which Such a minimum oil pressure value depends on the current speed and the Oil temperature or with these engine parameters correlated sizes.
- d. H. dynamic oil pressure limit can - in contrast to a fixed switching point in an oil pressure switch - the different Operating conditions of the engine are taken into account and so dangerous, by a low oil level conditional lack of oil early and be reliably recognized.
- engine parameters such as For example, the engine load, the speed of an engine oil pump, the speed of the vehicle, the change of engine speed etc. individually or in total included in the determination of the minimum oil pressure value.
- the oil temperature does not necessarily have to be measured directly, but can also be from a or several other engine characteristics, such.
- This aspect of the invention is based on the finding that by the foaming Conditional air content of the oil - hereinafter referred to as "Aeration" - increases when the oil level drops. Due to the air contained in the oil is the actually incompressible oil compressible, so that the frequency spectrum the pressure sensor signal changes significantly, since the air contained in the oil external vibrations is excited to resonances. Thus, the Aeration degree of engine oil from a frequency analysis of the pressure sensor signal - If this has a sufficient resolution and the pressure sensor is not Too slow is - at least approximately determine.
- a high level of aeration does not necessarily provide an indicator of one Oil deficiency condition, since increased foaming also in certain driving situations, such as As a full braking, strong bends, etc. and at a Overfilling the engine with oil can occur.
- driving situations stand out
- the air bubbles dissolve again after a short time. Therefore, it is not preferable to find an increased degree of aeration immediately detected a lack of oil, but it is waiting to see if this increased aeration degree for a predetermined period of time, this period of time is greater than the time period within which a driving dynamics conditional foaming of the engine oil would usually dissolve again. Only when this period has been exceeded and the increased level of aerations always still stops, a lack of oil is detected.
- the present invention is preferably software-primarily as an algorithm in implemented a microprocessor-based engine control of a vehicle, wherein both a central control unit and a dedicated control unit for Execution of the algorithm can be provided.
- the engine control unit (not shown) receives signals from different sensors, processes them through stored in a read-only memory algorithms and outputs different output signals et al to a display unit in the instrument cluster of the vehicle. in the Under the invention, the engine control receives the continuous signal of a Oil pressure sensor, as shown by way of example in Figure 3.
- the pressure sensor has a sensor surface 50 against which Pressure oil is applied.
- the sensor is by means of a screw 52 and a External hexagon 54 at a suitable point of the pressure oil circuit - in the Usually in the flow direction behind an oil filter - arranged.
- an integrated Transducer provides the sensor via a terminal 58, a pressure signal to the engine control.
- the further evaluation is divided into two branches, which are parallel or consecutively, namely a static evaluation 20 and a dynamic evaluation 18.
- a static evaluation 20 takes place in step 26 first a filtering or averaging of the signal, for example by a rolling averaging, in which the respective previous measured values with given weighting factors enter into the averaged measured value.
- a rolling averaging in which the respective previous measured values with given weighting factors enter into the averaged measured value.
- high-frequency components are suppressed in the measurement signal.
- the static evaluation is enabled (step 48, for a more detailed explanation see below)
- the current engine speed and the current engine oil temperature a minimum oil pressure taken from a table memory or calculated based on stored functions.
- FIG. 2 With reference to various exemplary curves, FIG necessary minimum oil pressure with the speed and the oil temperature. As can be seen, is the dependence on the engine oil temperature, especially in the low speed range considerably. The minimum oil pressure allowed depends on the location the measurement. If the measurement takes place behind an oil filter, then the maximum included in the permissible minimum oil pressure across the filter become. Known oil filters usually have a bypass valve, so that the maximum pressure drop across the filter then occurs when the bypass valve opens.
- the thus determined minimum oil pressure value is at step 40 (see Figure 1) with the averaged Oil pressure measured compared.
- an oil level warning at 44.
- a possibly triggered oil level warning is reset.
- To one To avoid sudden change of the warning indicator can be in the comparison include a hysteresis (not shown) and / or the oil level warning be activated only when the minimum oil pressure for a given Time was exceeded.
- the signal of the oil pressure sensor of a frequency analysis (for example by means of a discrete Fourier transform).
- the spectrum obtained is then with respect to the position and / or amplitude of the analyzed individual frequency peaks and determined from the result of the analysis, whether a given degree of aeration has been exceeded.
- This analysis may, for example, be a given aeration degree are considered exceeded if the spectrum is in a given frequency range contains a peak exceeding a predetermined maximum amplitude.
- the spectrum can be normalized before the evaluation.
- the current engine speed can be included as the frequency is more periodic Oil pressure fluctuations often depends on the engine speed.
- Step 28 When in Step 28, the exceeding of a given Aerations degree displayed is so blocked in step 34, the static evaluation of the signal, so that this is aborted on the next pass when step 48 is reached (Return in step 46).
- a high degree of aeration but also driving dynamics may be conditional there is a lack of oil 42 due to excessive Foaming only after the high degree of aeration has lasted for a time tmax has, this time is measured by a timer.
- FIG. 4 is an example for a more detailed explanation of the dynamic evaluation Time / oil pressure diagram with two oil pressure curves.
- a chain-driven Gerotor pump with five chambers were placed on an oil pump test bench Run at 3000 rpm and 90 ° C oil temperature carried out.
- the upper curve 60 sets the operation in the normal state with a Aeration degree of less than 3%.
- the envelope of the curve results by the fundamental frequency of the pump shown or its five chambers.
- the higher-frequency vibrations represent the harmonics and get through the individual teeth of the oil pump.
- vehicle dynamic sensors are evaluated, as indicated by the block 24. For example, if the signal of an acceleration sensor a certain maximum value (acceleration or deceleration), the indication of a lack of oil in both branches for a predetermined Duration locked.
- the dynamic evaluation 18 and the static evaluation due to the signals of the driving dynamics sensors to block, a false warning to prevent.
- the actual oil shortage warning is carried out by a visual and / or acoustic Display in the instrument group.
- the message can be done with different intensity, such as with a request to refill engine oil at the next service or with a Request to stop the engine immediately.
